2 hen you look at this season s women s roster you may not recognize over Whalf of the team, but that is the most exciting aspect of the squad. The Tigers not only added 16 of the top swimmers and divers from 13 different states and two foreign countries but welcomed the addition of Co-Women s Head Coach Dorsey Tierney-Walker to the program. I am really excited about the experience and success that Dorsey will bring to the women s team, David Marsh commented. She is considered one of the top coaches in the nation with her strength being in the technical aspects of swimming and a strong background in training principles/programs that she has employed at Indiana and in her own swimming career. Dorsey s interaction with the team from day one has been very positive and the team has already taken to her in a way that should be a tremendous win-win for all. Gone from the roster are four key seniors from last year s team that won its third straight SEC title and finished runner-up at the NCAA level after winning the past three crowns. The Tigers will look to the 13 returning members, who have the thirst to reclaim the national title and continue the SEC streak, and count on the 16 newcomers to make this a reality. This year s team is a little different from those in the recent past, Tierney- Walker commented. In past years we have had a couple superstars amongst a very good team. This year we are strong from top to bottom; we are going to have to rely on our depth more than anything to accomplish the goals that we have set for ourselves. The goals are pretty consistent with every year in that we want to vie for a national and SEC title. Depth is a word that everyone involved in the women s swimming and diving program will get used to hearing this season. Even though the team may be young, the group as a whole brings in experience at the international and elite national level. Adding to this mix are nine upperclassmen who have been on three NCAA and SEC Champion teams and have a wealth of international experience under their belt s. I believe that with inexperience [at the collegiate level] comes quite a bit of enthusiasm, Tierney-Walked commented. This energy, in combination with the focus, strength and confidence of our upperclassmen, creates tremendous opportunity for this team. FREESTYLE The Tigers return three sprint freestyle swimmers that were NCAA finalists and All-American last year and lose just one, Jenni Anderson, to graduation. Senior Jana Kolukanova will lead the way in the sprints. At the World Championships this past summer, she recorded a personal best time and an Estonian national 100m (55.81) free record. Jana had a fantastic summer and finaled at the World Championship for the first time and she is excited, Tierney-Walker said. I think she is finally finding her grove. She is a quiet leader and a reliable performer, especially on relays. Also adding experience to the sprint group will be sophomore s Kara Denby and Emily Kukors. Denby and Kukors both earned All-American status in the sprint free s and were top-three finishers at the SEC Championship. Newcomer s Women s Preview Auburn Women s Swimming & Diving Roster Name Cl. NCAA Champion Emile Ewing should also make an impact in the sprint category. Kara had a phenomenal end of the season last year and will help us tremendously, Tierney-Walker commented. The middle distance frees took a big hit with the loss of seven-time NCAA Champion Margaret Hoelzer. Senior Erin Volcan and Kukors, who was an All- American as a freshman in 200 free, will be called upon to fill in the gap. Blakeley Bunch also has the potential to add much needed depth in the middle distance. The 200 and 400 free relays will return Denby, Kukors and Kolukanova but also presents the opportunity for new faces to make the squad. That is what is exciting about this year, Tierney-Walker said. When you are around people on a daily basis who are trying to better themselves you have no choice but to fall into that as well. The competition for a spot on any of our relay s is something that should be encouraging for our new group and is healthy for everyone. The distance free duo of Adrienne Binder and Hayley Peirsol will look to dominate at all levels this season. Both Binder and Peirsol bring in a tremendous amount of experience on the international scene, where just this summer Peirsol won gold and silver in the distance events at the World University Games. Not only was Peirsol s suitcase a little heavier coming back from Turkey, but she also left her mark in the WUG record books in the 1500m free (16:08.06). In the previous WUG, Binder was the one collecting the medals as she won the 1500m free in Hayley had a terrific summer at the World University Games, recalled Tierney- Walker. Adrienne had a little more relaxed summer and is more refreshed coming into this season after turning in a stellar performance at the SEC Championships last season. Binder will be the obvious favorite in the 1650 free at the SEC level, where she owns the record (15:50.00) and two back-to-back titles. Peirsol, on the other hand, had a better showing at the NCAA level in this event where she finished runner-up (15:51.97). Newcomer Chelsea Haser who was a national qualifier in the 200, 500, 1000 and 1650 free s will be a welcome addition to the distance corp. BACKSTROKE Olympic and World Championship gold medalist Kirsty Coventry will always be looked upon as one of the greatest swimmers in AU history and in the backstroke where she excelled at all levels. Coventry s leadership and dominance will be missed this year in the back but senior s Jeri Moss and Erin Volcan look to pick up where Coventry left off. Jeri made her first national team this summer with the World Championships, Tierney-Walker said. With that she has come in with quite a bit of confidence. She seems determined to take advantage of every racing opportunity during her senior year. Moss swam in her first World Championships this summer and made it to the semi-finals in the 200 back with a best time (2:13.64). She brought home a silver medal from the World Championships, swimming with the 4x100 medley relay team where she showcased her talent in the back. At the second annual Duel in the Pool, Moss finaled in both the 100 and 200 back and with this came a new confidence she hopes to put into action in her final season at Auburn AUBURN Swimming & Diving

3 Women s Preview Known as a backstroke specialist, Volcan sports four All-American honor s in the 100 and 200 backs and a bronze World University Games medal (200 back, 2:13.82) and is the clear leader in this event which will be made up of mainly of freshmen. I think Erin will contribute significantly in the backstroke, commented Tierney-Walker. She is one that comes in and just takes care of business everyday and does things correctly. I look for her to come around quite a bit at the end of the season when we need her the most. She will continue to get better and gain confidence throughout the year. Gisela Morales, a 2005 World Championship and 2004 Olympic competitor for Guatemala, is expected to make an immediate impact in the 100 and 200 backstroke. Morales finished in the top 30 at the Athens Games in both events and will also battle with Volcan for a spot on the medley relays. Gisela has had quite a bit of international experience which is nice. When you bring that to the NCAA level it is a bit of an easier transition having handled that type of pressure before. She is used to competing at a very high level in the backstroke, said Tierney-Walker. Also expected to contribute in the backstroke are freshman Margo McCawley, who was a top-25 finisher at the 2004 Olympic Trials and USA National Junior Team member, Katherine Caldwell and Alana Dillette. Margo has had quite a bit of success, Tierney-Walker said. She was one of the best backstrokers coming out of high school last year. BREASTSTROKE The breaststroke group seems to be wide open early this season. The younger group will look to senior Lauren Duerk, who split s her time in the breast with the individual medley s, but brings in NCAA and SEC experience. Junior coteam captain Anne Amardeilh is coming off a successful summer in the 100 (1:13.24) and 200 (2:35.59) where she finaled at the World University Games in both. Amardeilh turned heads as a freshman in ; earning All-American honors in first time out in the 200 breast. Lauren is another one that has impressed me this year. I think Lauren my surprise some people. She has a bit of a no hold back attitude with a sense of urgency there, which I think is a good thing, said Tierney- Walker. Alicia Jensen will brighten the breaststroke as she has already made a name for herself in this stroke. Competing at the 2005 World Championship Trials, Jensen turned in a seventh place finish (2:32.38). Jensen was also a top-25 finisher in the 100 and 200 breast s at the 2004 Olympic Trials when only 16 years old. The addition of Alicia significantly helps us in the breaststroke area, Lauren Duerk Tierney-Walker commented. She is one that will contribute in both the 100 and 200. She is one of those people whose energy is just contagious. When she is on deck and in full force the whole energy level rises. Adding strength to the breast group will be sophomore Julie Stupp and freshman Allison Randall. Stupp surprised many last season in the 200 breast, finishing third ahead of teammates Amardeilh and Durek and the SEC Championship. Stupp will also be in competition for a spot on the medley s relays. BUTTERFLY Even with the loss of Hoelzer, the fly is poised to be one of Auburn s strongest. The Tigers return NCAA and SEC finalists junior Tawnie Bethune and sophomore Kristen Hastrup. Tawnie is one of the best butterfliers I have seen in a long time. She is just beautiful to watch and is very coachable and a hard worker. Look for her in the second part of the season as she returns after taking time off from training in the pre-season, Tierney-Walker said. At the senior national s this summer, Bethune won the 100 fly B final (1:00.80) and was the runner-up in the 200 B final with a personal best time (2:14.07). Hastrup will work on developing in the middle distance free s in the early part of the season and will shift her focus to the 200 fly in the second part of the season; an event which she earned All-American honors last season. After finding a precious third event, Moss will be looking to make a name for herself in this stroke as she has already done in the back. Jeri has found a third event after playing around with it for a few years, commented Tierney-Walker. Last year the coaches found the 100 fly and she is pretty fired up about it. For Kristen, being a sophomore is probably her greatest asset having been through one year, she knows what to expect and is in a little better grove both mentally and physically. Danielle LeClair and Kara Nelson, the freshmen, should add quality depth to the Tigers butterfly squad. INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY Coventry s presence in the IM, where she won the national title in the 200 and 400 IM last year, will be missed but it also opens up the opportunity for new faces to emerge and take ownership of the event this will include Duerk, Kukors and Stupp. Swimmers to also keep an eye on in this event are Binder and Peirsol who have both proved they are ready to rise to the challenge in the IM events. Lauren is strong in the IM and I think her 400 will come around this year, Tierney-Walker said. She is definitely our top returner this year after having a good summer at the U.S. Nationals. I think Emily had some pretty big improvements last year in the 200 IM. She will be one that hopefully will be in contention for a championship in the 200 IM. Julie is going to improve quite a bit this year. She has a new found confidence from her performance last year. This trio of IMers all earned All-American honors last year at the NCAA championships in this specialty. Kukors made her presence known early in her career as a freshman with a fourth-place finish in the 200 IM. Both Durek and Stupp swam the 200 and 400 IM this summer at U.S. Nationals and was able to improve from their NCAA performances. Newcomer Blakeley Bunch has already turned the coaches heads in the IM where she is the reigning California/Nevada Sectional Champions (400 IM). I think Blakeley may surprise some people; she has impressed us so far, commented Tierney-Walker. DIVING This year s diving troop, led by coach Jeff Shaffer, has much to be excited about as they set out to do what has never been accomplished by a trio of divers at Auburn having more than one woman compete at the NCAA Championships. We have three very strong divers which I think may be the strongest women s program we have ever had, Shaffer said. It is very exciting and I look forward to the challenge of getting more than one female diver to the national championships. We have the potential to have all three there in 2006 and that would be a tremendous asset to the team in getting back to winning titles and a testament to the diving program at Auburn. Tiger junior Lynnsey Segraves who earned two All-American honors on 3- meter and platform and was named co-high point scorer at the SEC Championships after going fourth on platform (372.30) and fifth on both 1- (269.65) and 3-meter s (463.60) will lead the women s group this season. Segraves also achieved another feat by qualifying on all three events for the summer national championship, something she had yet to accomplish in her career. We anticipate Lynnsey will continue to perform well and improve her consistency and get back to the NCAA Championships, Shaffer said. I think it is a statement as to how hard she worked this summer and her further development in all three diving events when she qualified on all three three for summer nationals. Segraves will be surrounded by two newcomers, Corey Gerlach and Whitney Wielgus, who add balance to the diving program. Both freshmen have competed at the senior national level and have had much success early in their careers. Look for both to help bolster the women s team at national s. Corey s experience comes primarily on the springboard while Whitney s is on platform. Both should compliment one another while they provide a consistent team representation on all diving events, Shaffer said. With leadership and collegiate experience from Segraves and the talent from both freshmen, the potential for the most valuable point production at the SEC and NCAA levels in Auburn history is on the horizon for the season. 22 Winning its third straight and fifth overall NCAA title in 2005, the Auburn men s swimming and diving team solidified their spot among the nation s elite programs and placed its name in the record books as one of only seven schools ever to win three or more back-toback national titles. With success come expectations and David Marsh and his AU men s squad hopes to continue the winning tradition at both the national and conference level this season. This team has tremendous potential because of the strength in the top swimmers and diver Steve Segerlin. Swimmers such as George Bovell, Alexei Puninski, Eric Shanteau, Matt Targett, Doug Van Wie and James Wike bring us world class experience. Steve Segerlin is one of the top divers in the nation. Even more exciting is a wave of developing swimmers who serve as the catalyst to elevate the team into top contender status, David Marsh said. Added to the mix this season, unlike most of the past season s, are 11 newcomers, all with the potential to make the NCAA team and have an immediate impact. Tiger fans will also recognize a new face on the pool deck as the AU program welcomed assistant coach Brian Barnes this summer. Brian comes from an ideal background of experience, a national caliber athlete himself, followed by a successful stint as a U.S. club coach and being an assistant at Indiana with the men s team, Marsh said. Brian along with Aaron Ciarla, Rob Lias and Chad Oken bring knowledge and experience and their temperament adds perfectly to our staff Men s Preview FREESTYLE After last season, the name Fred Bousquet will forever coincide with the sprint freestyle events and with the exit of this World Record Holder, multiple National Champion and international medalist, senior George Bovell will have the daunting task of picking up where Bousquet and teammate Ryan Wochomurka left off. Over the past ten years, two AU men have won half of the 50 free national titles, including three in a row from Bousquet (the other two men were Aaron Cialra in 1999 and Brett Hawke in 1997). One of the many highlights from last season was Bousquet s repeat sub-19 swims in the 50 free to become the first male ever to break this barrier. He was just the second person ever to go under 20 seconds along with former AU swimmer Gary Shatz. Lurking in the NCAA sprint free scene since his sophomore campaign, Bovell, who has international, national and SEC medals in his collection, will lead the charge for the Auburn sprint group. Sprint freestyle will continue to be a strength for the Auburn program. Relay combinations will include some of the bright young stars from the United States along with some international swimmers with world-class experience. Leading the way will be George, Alexei Puninski, Scott Goodrich and Bryan Lundquist, Marsh commented. Lundquist, a junior, and sophomore Goodrich add experience competing on the national scene where both earned All-American honors last season. Each took their success from the national championship and carried it over to the summer national championship where both had personal best swims in the sprint free events (Lundquist, 100 free and Goodrich, 50 free 22.90). The Tigers are excited to welcome Australian 50 free national champion Matt Targett, who transferred to the Plains. Targett was also a key member on the winning 400 Aussie free relay teams that won a national title this summer. Matt looks to have an immediate Auburn Men s Swimming & Diving Roster Name Cl. NCAA Champion George Bovell impact on the 50 and 100 free sprints and will vie for a spot on the relays, Marsh said. Depth will come from freshmen, Kris Findorff and Steve Scheren and returnee s Seth Barry and Kurt Cady. Cady gained experience at the World Championship Trials swimming a career best of in the 100 free. With the loss of All-American and SEC Champion BJ Jones to graduation, the mid-distance/distance group will look for leadership from Daniel Slocki, a two-time NCAA qualifier. Slocki worked hard in the off-season to improve his middle distance swims and clocked a respectable 3:56 this summer in the 400 free. Looking for a breakout season will be sophomore, Shai Livnat, who had a great summer participating in the World Championships, while newcomers Fleming and Nick Bovell will be called upon to fill out the middle distance corp. The middle distance group looks to provide much needed depth at the NCAA level with top performers such as Daniel, Shai, and Anthony, Marsh said. With the loss of Nate Knopf to the distance group, better known as RHOP, red-shirt freshman Andrew Callahan, sophomores Cory Knopp and Jeff Smith, along with Slocki will look to take over in the distance category. Look for the 800 free relay to have competition and leadership provided by Bovell, Rory Connell, Joey Schneider, Eric Shanteau, Doug Van Wie and James Wike, said Marsh. BACKSTROKE Van Wie jumped on the national scene at last year s NCAA Championship with second and third place finishes and returns for his last season with national title contender status in the 100 and 200 backs. The SEC Champion in the 100 back last year (an unshaved 46.71), Van Wie earned international recognition this summer at the World University Games where he medaled swimming anchor for the U.S. 800 free relay team. He was a finalist in both the 100 and 200 back s at the World Championship Trials AUBURN Swimming & Diving

23 Men s Preview A new addition to the AU team, James Wike brings in national caliber notoriety and looks to contribute immediately to the back program. Wike finished sixth in the 100 back (55.96) and was a finalist in the 200 back (2:02.71) at the World Championship Trials. He owns three Illinois state titles in the 100 back and was a semi-finalist in both back s at the 2004 Olympic Trials. Goodrich emerged as a freshman in the backstroke last season, earning All-American honors in the 100 back with a time of (a personal best) and will continue to improve in Nick Bovell and Schneider will add depth to this group. BREASTSTROKE Auburn is still looking for a bon-a-fide front line breaststroker and senior Eric Shanteau looks the obvious choice for this role as he brings in experience from all levels and especially at the NCAA level where he finaled in the 200 the past two seasons and was a semi-finalist in that distance at the 2004 US Olympic Trials. We are looking for someone to step up and be a leader in the sprint breast, Marsh said. Coming off an outstanding summer and strong showing at summer nationals in the breast events were Sean Osborne, Andrew Callahan and Eric. Osborne had an outstanding summer at the national meet, winning the B final in the 200 breast (2:18.77) and the C final in the 100 (1:04.15) both with best times. Osborne should carry over these top performances into this season for his AU team. When you put in returnee s Cady and David Maras to the group along with newcomers Jon Roberts, Logan Madson and Wike, Auburn could return to the breaststroke strength which it had been known for historically. BUTTERFLY We should have a strong showing with leadership coming from Alexei in the sprints. With the much improved Matt Targett in the 100 fly, there is much to be look forward to from this duo in the butterfly events. Though Puninski, native of Croatia, and Targett are new to the Auburn program, both bring in world-class experience and are expected to make a showing at both the national and SEC level. Add to the mix, Cady, Connell, Mark Johnson, Madson and Fleming all with scoring potential at the NCAA level the butterfly group has the potential to have one of the best seasons in several years. The trio of Cady, Connell, Johnson and Scott all qualified for NCAAs in the 200 fly last season and Connell ended up coming back with All-American honors. Both Connell and Johnson contributed points to the eventual SEC Champion team in the 200 fly. Newcomers Fleming and Madson will add energy and have the ability to contribute in the 200 fly after performing well in the event at the US World Championship Trials last spring. Look out for dark horse Eric Shanteau as he possesses world-class potential. INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY For the third straight year, the Auburn team s strength will come from the individual medley led by senior Shanteau. With double gold medals in the 200 and 400 IMs from this summer World University Games, Shanteau is poised for an outstanding senior season at Auburn. Shanteau enters both the SEC and NCAA meets as one of the favorite to win double titles after placing second (200 IM) and third (400 IM) at the national championship last year. Eric is one of the nation s leading individual medley swimmers and had an outstanding summer at the World University Games where he won two gold medals. I look for James Wike to emerge strong in the 200 IM and Doug is coming off a significant improvement during the summer in the IM. Senior Van Wie made great strides in the individual medleys during the summer season and had one of his best finishes as a collegiate at the World University Games in the 200 IM, finishing fifth with consecutive best times (2:02.31 in the final). Wike will look to make a statement early in his AU career in the IMs this season. A state champion in the 200 IM, Wike was an Olympic Trials finalist in the same event in For those in the swimming community the name George Bovell will forever be associated with the IM event. A two-time NCAA champion in the 200 and three-time SEC Champ in the 200 IM, he also owns hardware from two international competitions in this event. He became a celebrity in his native Trinidad & Tobago after capturing bronze at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens in the 200 IM. If he continues to make strides in his knee rehabilitation, the Auburn IM squad could be dominate at all levels this season. Three others AU returnee s have the potential to finish at the top in the IM to help lift the Tiger IM group to new heights. With Cady, Connell and Schneider adding points in the event, the IM group could help bring the AU men s its fourth straight NCAA crown. Adding spark to the IM events will be Nick Bovell in the 200 IM, Callahan (400 IM), Fleming, Johnson, Madson, Osborne and Roberts. DIVING The Auburn diving team has risen to national prominence in recent years with the help of former divers Caesar Garcia, Steve Segerlin Matt Bricker as well as current junior Steven Segerlin combined - have been instrumental in leading the Auburn men s program to three consecutive national and conference team titles and a sweep on platform at SECs since 2002 and NCAAs in the 2003 meet. This year Segerlin looks to build upon his success of last season where he earned three All-American honors, finishing second, third and fourth on platform, 3-meter and 1-meter, respectively, and was named High Point Diver at the NCAA meet. His scores of on 3-meter and on 1-meter were also AU record performances. Segerlin continued the Auburn dominance at SECs by winning the Tigers fourth straight title on platform. Over the summer, Segerlin also dominated all three events at the Zone B Championship and earned a spot on the World University Games team. Steven went one-, two-, three at SECs and contributed major points a national s to ensure our team national title, Shaffer said. What more could you ask for as far as consistency and scoring. This year our goals are to hopefully continue the streak of NCAA and SEC individual titles on platform. All the training goes into making the most consistent diver we can. We go into a competition with the mindset of taking it one dive at a time and letting the results fall as they may. That is what has made us successful so far. With the loss of Men s Qualifying Standards National Champion 25-Yard Course Bricker to graduation, Segerlin will be looked Event A B upon to provide leadership Standard Standard for newcomer Scott 50 Freestyle Morgan.
