2 The Auburn men's team dominated the competition at NCAAs last season, sweeping through an undefeated season and setting points records at both the SEC and NCAA Championships. Led by the 'Four Horsemen' of George Bovell, Fred Bousquet, Derek Gibb and Ryan Wochomurka, the Tigers charged to new heights in winning their second straight NCAA crown. This season, David Marsh has the enviable task of gunning for the three-peat. With a talented core of returnees, including three of the 'Four Horsemen', the outlook is very bright for the Tigers. The challenge every year is to win a new championship. The more the team can focus on what they can do this year rather than thinking of defending a championship, the better off they will be, Marsh said. There is plenty of veteran leadership which we will count on. If the veterans lead the way they can, this should be one of the stronger teams when you combine the swimming and diving. The younger athletes show a lot of promise. They were not all big names out of high school, but several show the capacity to develop into worldclass swimmers during their time here at Auburn. FREESTYLE The sprint freestyle should once again be very strong for the Tigers. World Recorder Holder Bousquet returns to defend his NCAA title in the 50 free. Bousquet, a part of three NCAA record setting relays, also placed third in the 100 free at NCAAs as well as semi-finaling in both the 50 and 100 freestyles at the Athens Olympic Games. Wochomurka, a fellow horseman, is back for his final go-around on the Plains. A great relay swimmer, 'Wocho' swam the second leg of both the 200 and 400 free relays that established NCAA records at the championships. Individually, Wocho finished third in the 50 and fifth in the 100. Again one of the stronger events is the sprint freestyle led by Ryan Wochomurka and Fred Bousquet, Marsh said. Some young depth will come from Joe Pascale, one of the most improved sprinters in the country last year. If he can continue to improve in the same fashion while some of our freshmen and sophomores come along like we hope they would, that event will be really solid. Bovell, though not known as a sprinter, has carried his weight in the 100 free. The leadoff swimmer in both the 200 and 400 free relays, he swam to a fourth-place finish in the 100 free, giving Auburn three of the top five finishers in the 100. Back are sophomores Bryan Lundquist, Seth Barry, and Pascale, who will add quality depth to the sprint freestyle events. Newcomer Scott Goodrich will add a little intensity to an already outstanding crew of sprinters. Bovell should also be the leader in the shorter of the middle distances after racing to a third-place finish in the 200 free at NCAAs. He will be joined by senior BJ Jones and sophomores Barry, Wesley Flatt, Daniel Slocki and Joey Schneider as returnees who look to make an impact at the NCAA level. Jones is coming off of a seventh-place finish in the 400 free at NCAAs and his firstever SEC title in the 500 free, which in itself put the LaGrange, Ga. native as one of the "swimmers-to-watch" heading into the summer. At the US Olympic Trials, he semifinaled in the 200 free. Slocki and Schneider were both pleasant surprises as freshmen earning spots on the NCAA team. Slocki finished seventh in both the 500 and 1650 at SECs while Schneider added a sixth-place finish in the 500 and a seventh-place in the 200 at the conference meet. Also watch for freshmen Shai Livnat and Rory Auburn Men s Preview Connell to make some waves in the mid-distance free events for the Tigers. BJ Jones will lead the way once again for us. He is a great leader and he will challenge all who train with him to be better on a consistent basis, Marsh said. Anchoring the distance freestyle crew, otherwise know as "RHOP", is Senior All-American Nate Knopf. Knopf reeled in the competition at NCAAs as he raced to an eighth place finish in the mile. Freshmen Cory Knopp and Jeff Smith will add energy to the "RHOP" group as they compete in the distance events. BACKSTROKE The backstroke should once again be a strength for our program. Doug Van Wie has emerged as a world-class backstroker and shows even more potential for the future. The performance of Chad Barlow will be key for this years team. Van Wie, a junior, popped onto the radar screen last year with his versatility in racing the 50, 100 and 200 backstrokes at the NCAA level. After leading off the NCAA record setting 200 medley relay at NCAAs, Van Wie posted a seventh-place finish in the 100 back and a 10th-place finish in the 200 back at the championships. His improvement carried into the summer with a semi-final swim in the 100 back and a final swim in the 200 back at the US Olympic Trials. Senior Chad Barlow will provide leadership in both the 100 and 200 backstroke events this season. The Virginia native finished 15th and 12th in the 100 and 200 backstrokes respectively at the 2003 Championships. Along with Barlow and Van Wie, Goodrich will provide some depth in the 100 back for the Tigers. BREASTSTROKE Losing 2004 Olympian Mark Gangloff last season after losing 2000 Olympian Pat Calhoun two years ago could cause a lot of heartache for a squad, but not for the Tigers. 3 breaststroker is junior Eric Shanteau. An honorable mention All-American in the 200 at NCAAs, he semi-finaled at that distance at the 2004 US Olympic trials. This is a young but talented group. Breaststroke has always been a cornerstone of the Auburn swimming program. As these youngsters develop that trend should continue. David Maras and Andrew Callahan show early promise while Eric Shanteau in the 200 should make for a strong dual meet team, Marsh said. Classmate Kurt Cady brings added NCAA championships experience in the 100 breast. Sophomore Sean Osborne is looking to improve upon a pair of seventh place finishes at the SEC Championships. Throw in freshman Callahan, who placed 10th in the 200 at Olympic trials, and Louisiana native Maras, and the future of the Auburn breaststroke group looks bright. BUTTERFLY The Auburn butterflyers are looking forward to the challenges ahead of them in the campaign. Butterfly should be an event that allows for a lot of improvement, Marsh said. We expect Fred Bousquet to lead the way in the sprint butterfly. Depth should be good in the 200 fly, but we are looking for a leader to step forward. Leading the charge is Bousquet. Having earned All-American honors in 2003 and 2004, Bousquet looks to defend his SEC 100 butterfly title this year. Junior Kurt Cady and sophomore Mark Johnson provide NCAA experience in the 200. Sophomores Lundquist and John Scott along with freshmen Connell and Luke Weniger provide depth in the fly events for the Auburn Tigers. INDIVIDUAL MEDLEY The IMs, a cornerstone for the Auburn program over the past two years, will once again be a stronghold for the Tigers. Bovell successfully defended his title in the 200 IM at NCAAs in world record fashion before racing to a bronze medal in the same event at the summer Olympics. Bovell looks to improve upon his NCAA record performance in 2003, and joining him in the pursuit will be Shanteau, Van Wie and Cady. Shanteau, an All- American in both the 200 and 400 IMs, placed third in both IM events at the US Olympic Trials. Van Wie finished sixth in the 200 at NCAA's while Cady took home a ninth place finish at the conference level. Sophomores Osborne, Johnson, and Scott will provide depth in the event. Watch for freshmen Connell, an Olympic Trials qualifier in the 200, and Callahan to continue the Auburn IM legacy. IM is arguably the best event for the team this year, Marsh said. The program prides itself in the development of the individual medley and to have several world-class swimmers training together everyday only pushes them to be better in those events. Eric and George will lead the charge, but as they compete in each of the four strokes they will have plenty of competition in practice. DIVING For the past three years, the Auburn diving program has been one of the strongest in the nation. The duo of Caesar Garcia and Matt Bricker took AU Diving Coach Jeff Shaffer s squad to new heights. Now that the Tigers have become one of the elite diving programs in the country, nicely complimenting the swimming program, the challenge is to stay there Auburn Men s Preview With Steven and Matt returning they will lead us hopefully to the same success we had last year, Shaffer said. They set the table last year for continued success on the men s side. We have the potential to 1-2 on platform once again. With the loss of Garcia to graduation, Bricker will be the one looked to for guidance. But he will not be alone. Classmate Andrew Sivulka should continue his impressive rebound after a year away from the sport while sophomore Steven Segerlin s quest to be the best will continue. Bricker was the SEC champion on the platform as a freshman, but took a backseat to Garcia the last two years. However, his 2004 runner-up finish on the tower at SECs and his triple All-American honor run at the NCAA Championships should provide him with the confidence needed to succeed in his final year. Segerlin, a potential three-event finalist this season, came in with a lot of hype as a freshman, and lived up to it immediately. At his first SEC Championships, he was the third party in an Auburn sweep on the platform to go along with two top-10 finishes on the springboards. At NCAA s, he moved up a spot on the platform to second behind Garcia and also finished 12th on the 3-meter, giving him room for improvement but also the sweet taste of success. Both Matt and Steve are coming off a real solid Olympic trials and a very outstanding performance for Matt at the US Nationals, Shaffer said. It was good to see Matt finally show the ability that we always knew he had. I anticipate that Matt s performace over the summer will motivate him to have a great year. Sivulka s return to prominence should come this year. His year-long hiatus during AU s 2003 Championship run refueled his fire. Last year he contributed at SECs with a 10th-place finish on both the 3-meter and the platform. This year, his task will be to join Bricker and Segerlin on the NCAA roster. I think we have three of the very best males divers in the conference as well as at the NCAA level and it is going to be another exciting year on the men s side.
