2 Stadio del Nuoto Part of the Foro Italico, a massive sports complex outside of Rome completed in 1938, the Stadio del Nuoto is a 13,000 seat swimming facillity designated to host the 009 FINA World Championships. The Foro Italico, inspired by the Roman forums of the imperial age, contains numerous sports venues, such as the Stadio Olimpico, the Stadio dei Marmi and the Stadio del Nuoto ( Swimming Stadium ), and it has hosted important events, most prominently the 1960 Summer Olympics and the 199 FINA World Championships. The tennis center is the host of the Internazionali d Italia, an ATP World Tour Masters 1000 and WTA Premier event. The tennis stadium court has a capacity of 8,000 spectators. QUOTING AUBURN HEAD COACH BRETT HAWKE On the sprinters The 50 free is looking pretty stacked for Auburn. We ve got the defending world champion and now the defending world-record holder. Fred and Caesar will be going up against each other - No. 1 and in the world this year. It s just looking like a battle. It s exciting for Auburn and exciting for the world of swimming because I think the world record s going to be broken. On Auburn representing twelve countries I think this is an amazing blend of experience and youth. It s one of the biggest contingent of Auburn athletes we have going after any major meet, ever. It s exciting in the fact that we could stand to win lots of medals and come away with more medals than what we did at the Olympics last year. I think it s a pretty good position for Auburn University right now. On the amount of Auburn athletes in competition Yeah I think if we put everybody together under the same flag, we d probably be the fourth or fifth biggest team out of any country. It s a huge number of athletes representing different countries. It just goes to show the diversity of our program and we have a proud history and athletes from all over the world representing Auburn. On Tyler McGill Tyler s at his first major international meet and has the second fastest butterfly in the country after Michael Phelps, and I think it s just a good position for him to be in. He can learn a lot from being next to Michael [Phelps] and representing the U.S. It s great for us because he ll be our captain for next year and we need that kind of leadership going into his senior year. It ll be a great experience for him. On the offseason We re using a lot of momentum from the Olympics last year. I think we got a lot of great results and people feel proud of to represent Auburn in such a classy way. I think we really wanted to use that momentum and kick into this year. It s really paying off, the dedication and the effort that these guys are putting in as far as representing Auburn and also representing their countries. I think they re learning that swimming is now an international sport and you have many opportunities to represent your country so I think people are making the most of those opportunities now. On Cailtin Geary... I think it s a huge step for Caitlyn, obviously, representing the U.S. That s our fi rst female athlete in a long time representing the U.S. in a sprint event so we re pretty proud of her and what she s done. We re hoping that she can have a great meet at the championships, as well. AUBURN IN THE 009 FINA WORLD RANKINGS (TOP-5) Men s 50 Freestyle 1. Fred Bousquet 0.9 /6. Cesar Cielo 1.1 7/7 9. For many AU swimmers, the summertime means diligent training for competitions among the country s and the world s best. For the swimming and diving athlete, international competition is the World Series of the sport and for the past several years, Auburn s swimmers have continued to make the playoffs. Auburn men and women have represented their respective countries in such international events as the Olympics, World Championships, Goodwill Games, Pan Pacific Games, World University Games and many more. Tiger swimmers were busy in 008 as 3 current, former and future Auburn swimmers competed in the Olympic Games, winning a total of 13 medals. Kirsty Coventry set an Auburn record with four medals, including a gold in the 00 back, while Cesar Cielo and Mark Gangloff also earned medals. Former Tiger Dave Denniston marked a first as he competed for the U.S. in the Paralymic Games in Beijing, China. Auburn swimmers also won 13 medals at the FINA Short Course World Championships. In the summer of 007, current and former Tigers picked up 8 medals in international competition, including 17 gold medals. Coventry was the standout among the Auburn swimmers as she earned five medals, four of which were gold. Cielo also had a solid summer, picking up three gold medals, four medals overall at the Pan-Am Games. At the 006 Pan Pacific Championships in Victoria, British Columbia, nine current and former Tiger swimmers competed. Hayley Peirsol claimed silver in the 1500m free and bronze in the 800m free and Margaret Hoelzer won silver in the 00m back. Also competing were Geroge Bovell, Kirsty Coventry, Mark Gangloff, Jeremy Knowles, Cesar Cielo, Eric Shanteau and Pascal Wollach. Nine AU swimmers made the trip to Canada for the 005 FINA World Championships and Coventry and Mark Gangloff walked away with a total of six medals (3 gold, 3 silver). In Izmir, Turkey, later in the summer, Tigers Demerae Christianson, Peirsol, Eric Shanteau and Doug Van Wie grabbed eight medals - five of them gold. At the 00 Olympics, a total of 1 Auburn swimmers competed, bringing home an Auburn record-tying five medals, including the first three Olympic medals by an Auburn female as Coventry took home gold, silver and bronze. During the 003 summer season, the Tigers went spanning the globe in Barcelona, Spain, for the 10th FINA World Championships, Santo Dominogo, Dominican Republic, for the Pan American Games and Dague, Korea, for the World University Games. A mixture of AU alums and current team members combined to bring home four medals in the as Scott Tucker and Ryan Wochomurka swam for the silver medal-winning USA team and Romain Barnier and Fred Bousquet for the bronze medal-winning French team. Bousquet s 7.03 anchor leg was the second-fastest split in the history of swimming. David Marsh was the head coach for the men s team in Barcelona while Kim Brackin was an assistant coach for the women s team in Korea. During the 00 summer season, brought home a silver (00 IM) and bronze (00 IM) medal from the Pan Pacific Games while AU teammate Margaret Hoelzer claimed gold in the 00 back at the same games. Kirsty Coventry also brought home a gold, taking first-place in the 00 IM at the Commonwealth Games. In the summer of 001, Bowen became Auburn swimming s first female World Champion as she swam to a first place finish in the 00-meter individual medley at the 001 FINA World Championships with a time of :11.93, just two one-hundredths off the American Record. With her first place finish, Bowen defeated defending Olympic champion Yana Klochova of the Ukraine. In January 1998, the world was stunned as AU alum and current graduate assistant Bill Pilczuk upset sprinting Russian great Alexandar Popov in the 50-meter free at the World Championships in Perth, Australia. Pilczuk was the first to defeat Popov, who hadn t lost a 50- or 100-meter event in a major event since With a lifetime best.9, Pilczuk won the world title by.1 of a second. Not only do the athletes at Auburn make the cut for international competition, but several coaches have been called upon to share their experience and knowledge of the sport. David Marsh was an assistant coach on both the 000 and 1996 U.S. Olympic teams, assistant coach Ralph Crocker served as the US National distance team coach in 001 and head diving coach Jeff Shaffer coached in various roles for the U.S. at the Goodwill Games, the 1997
