2 GLADDEN NAMED ASST. HEAD COACH Jim Gladden, in his 26th season at FSU (one year longer than Bobby Bowden) was named assistant head coach this summer. That role was formerly held by Chuck Amato, who took the head coaching job at NC State. Gladden has coached the defensive ends since 1996 and guided several current NFL standouts at that position, including Peter Boulware (Ravens), Reinard Wilson (Bengals) and Andre Wadsworth (Cardinals). Gladden will now also be responsible for handling many of Coach Bowden s administrative duties. COACHING CONTINUITY Along with Jim Gladden, several FSU coaches have been with the program for a number of years. Bowden s nine assistants average 19 years of collegiate experience (171 years total). Only two coaches have departed since the 1994 season. Billy Sexton (25th season) and Mickey Andrews (17th season) are next in line behind Gladden in tenure at FSU. COACHING STAFF WELCOMES JOE KINES With Chuck Amato taking the head coaching job at NC State, FSU brought in one of the top defensive coaches in the college game to take over as linebackers coach - Joe Kines. Kines brings an impressive resume with stops at Clemson, Florida, Tampa Bay (NFL), Arkansas and Georgia. Kines served as the defensive coordinator at Georgia from and was the Bulldogs assistant head coach last year before coming to Tallahassee. NO PLACE LIKE DOAK Florida State currently owns the nation's longest home unbeaten streak (49 games) and the country's longest home winning streak (32 games). Miami, ranked No. 2 at the time, was the last team to win at Doak Campbell Stadium as the Hurricanes defeated top-ranked FSU, 17-16, on Nov. 16, Seminole placekicker Gerry Thomas' 34-yard field goal with less than 30 seconds to play sailed wide right, allowing the 'Canes to win that game. FSU s 28-point fourth quarter rally to tie Florida in 1994 continued the home unbeaten streak. BOWDEN ONE OF FIVE TO WIN 300 GAMES Bobby Bowden became the fifth Division I-A coach to record 300 wins with the victory at Clemson last season. Bowden s 310 wins rank second among active coaches behind only Penn State s Joe Paterno. Paterno (380 games) is the only coach to reach the 300-win mark quicker than Bowden (389 games). ALL-TIME DIV. FSU players have won the Heisman, Thorpe (twice), Butkus (twice), Unitas (twice), Groza (twice), O Brien, Maxwell, and Lombardi Awards, all in the last 13 years. Bowden is the only coach in college football history to post 13-straight, 10-win seasons. Over the last 13 years, Florida State has won the Orange (3), Fiesta (2), Sugar (4), Blockbuster (1) and Cotton (1) Bowls. 5 FSU S ALL-TIME PASSING LEADER Chris Weinke, the first three-year starter in the Bowden era, became FSU s all-time leading passer with his 443- yard performance at Georgia Tech. Weinke passed Danny Kanell with his 58th career touchdown pass against Maryland. He became the ACC s all-time TD pass leader with his 66th against Duke. Weinke already owns the school record with 28, 200-yard passing games. The only time he did not throw for 200 yards was in the 1998 Virginia game, when he played a half before suffering a season-ending neck injury. THE CLASS OF THE SEMINOLES Florida State dominating success on the football field during the decade of the 1990's is well documented ( ,.890 winning percentage, two national championships). The Seminoles current crop of redshirt seniors (players in their fifth year in the program) have helped FSU win 51 of its 56 games played (.911 winning percentage) since the beginning of the 1996 season. In addition, fourth-year players (true seniors and redshirt juniors) have won 40 of 44 (.910 winning percentage), the third year-players (true juniors and redshirt sophomore) have won 29 of 32 games (.906 winning percentage) while the second-year players (true sophomore and redshirt freshmen) are 18-1 (.947). Weinke has thrown for more yards in the last two weeks than 25 Division I-A teams have thrown for this season. BOBBY BOWDEN QUOTES On Performance of Chris Weinke I ve not seen too many back-to-back performances like he s had. If you wanted to really set some records you could have left him in. I never heard him complain one time about his foot (injured left foot). Watch and you see there is really the professional side of things in that in the pros you ve got to go out there even if you play hurt. He made some unbelievable throws. Chris is not likely to make a bad mistake. With a young quarterback you have got to be careful throwing from close to your own goal line. You worry about your quarterback making some bad plays. We don t have to worry about that too much. Charlie (Ward) could get out of trouble by running the ball. Weinke gets out of trouble by dumping to the backs and letting them do the running for him. The other piece of the puzzle is if (your opponent) only rush three and drop eight into coverage, our offensive line is pretty good and they ve held the rush out long enough for someone to break open. On Offense We have the capability of both running and passing the football. It looks like we re better in the shotgun right now. We might be better at spreading everything out and going from there. Now, Duke blitzed more than anyone else we ll face. If you say a team is going to get 75 defensive plays, the normal is about 10 blitzes. With Duke, at least 50% of the plays are blitzes. The blitz is either you get us or we get you. Duke is young and inexperienced so they ve got to gamble. But, we have been seeing a lot of threeman fronts this year. We ve always been a kind of in the Top 10 list (for national passing leaders) team. Now we re at the top. We have a lot of good receivers, a lot of choices for the quarterback. We don t have Peter Warrick, but we ve got all those receivers out there. On FSU s Chances at a National Title We ve got to keep winning and if we do there is just too much football out there. There is so much left that I don t know what s going to happen. We ve been in worse shape before and made it (to the title game). Now, if we don t make it, I might have to change my stance and push for a playoff (laughs). On Virginia I have not had a chance to study Virginia at all yet. I was surprised about a month ago when I read about a program or something for who will follow George. I don t know enough about what s going on, but I ve always had great regard for him as a coach. I get the same feeling playing George Welsh and Virginia that I do when I coached against Joe Paterno. You are playing a team, number one, that is sound and is not going to beat itself. Now, how much material he has changes of course. I know that you had better execute because heíll have a good scheme for you.
