2 SEMINOLE ORANGE HAS BEEN SWEET AND BITTER FOR FSU The Orange Bowl has been the setting for some tremendous wins and devastating losses for Florida State. The Seminoles won their first national championship at the Orange Bowl following the 1993 season when Scott Bentley drilled a 22-yard field goal with 21 second left to defeat Nebraska. The Orange Bowl was also host to an undefeated (11-0) FSU team in 1980 (1979 season) that squared off against Oklahoma and Heisman Trophy winner Billy Simms. The Sooners J.C. Watts and Simms led OU to a 24-7 win. Florida State will be making it s sixth trip to the Orange Bowl making it the most frequent bowl visited by FSU. However, it is FSU s first invitation to the game since the 1995 match-up against Notre Dame. The Noles played in the Orange Bowl game in 1979 (losing to Oklahoma 24-7), 1980 (losing to Oklahoma again 18-17), 1993 (defeating Nebraska 27-14) and 1994 (defeating Nebraska for the national title) and in 1995 when they defeated Notre Dame Florida, 31-31, in 1994 continued the home BOWL SEASON HAS SEEN SEMINOLES AT THEIR BEST Florida State is playing in it s third consecutive BCS national title game and for the national championship for the fifth time in the last eight seasons. The bad news for opponents is that the Seminoles are 13-2 over the last 15 bowl games. The only losses came against Tennessee in the 1999 Fiesta Bowl and Florida in the 1997 Sugar Bowl. While FSU is one of the youngest Div. 1A football programs at just 54-years-old, the Seminoles have established themselves as one of college football s all-time great programs. The 2001 FedEx Orange Bowl is the 30 th bowl in the Noles history, and FSU has posted an record over those games. COACHING CONTINUITY IS A KEY Along with Jim Gladden (26 years), several FSU coaches have been with the program for a more than a decade. Including the 2000 season, Bowden s nine assistants average 20 years of collegiate experience (180 years total). Only two coaches have departed since the 1994 season. Billy Sexton (25th season) and Mickey Andrews (17th season) are next in line behind Gladden in tenure at FSU. IT ALL BEGINS AT HOME Florida State currently owns the nation s longest home unbeaten streak (52 games) and the country s longest home winning streak (35 games). Miami, ranked No. 2 at the time, was Travis Minor is the only player in FSU history to lead the team in rushing for four years, and he came just 78-yards short of gaining 1,000 yards on the season. NOTES the last team to win at Doak Campbell Stadium as the Hurricanes defeated top-ranked FSU, 17-16, on Nov. 16, Seminole placekicker Gerry Thomas 34-yard field goal with less than 30 seconds to play sailed wide right, allowing the Canes to win that game. FSU s 28-point fourth quarter rally to tie unbeaten streak. Lauderdale and West Palm Beach areas (near Joe Robbie Stadium) the Seminoles have 16 Seminoles who will be going home for the holidays. STOOPS HAS DEFENDED THE TRIBE BEFORE Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops is no stranger to the Seminoles. Stoops served as the defensive coordinator for the Florida Gators from FSU and Florida faced each other four times while Stoops was in control of the Gators defense. The Seminoles averaged 24 points per game and went 2-2 against the Stoop s led defense. In the five years before Stoops took control of the UF defense, the Seminoles averaged more than 31 points per game against the Gators and went SEVEN FSU FOES ARE BOWLING Seven of FSU s 12 opponents in 2000 will be playing in a bowl game during the 2000 post-season and two (Miami and Florida) will be playing in a BCS bowl. 4 FSU has played nine of the 12 members of the conference and the Seminoles have faced five Big 12 teams in bowl games. FSU is 8-3 against the conference in post-season play and has won six straight bowl games against the Big 12. The Seminoles last loss came at the hands of the Sooners in the 1981 Orange Bowl BOWDEN CLIMBS TO FOURTH ON ALL-TIME WINS LIST Bobby Bowden passed Amos Alonzo Stagg for fourth all-time with his 315th career victory against Florida. Bowden became the fifth Division I-A coach to record 300 wins with the victory at Clemson last season. Bowden s 315 wins rank second among active coaches behind only Penn State s Joe Paterno. Paterno (380 games) is the only coach to reach the 300-win mark quicker than Bowden (389 games). ALL-TIME DIVISION I-A COACHING VICTORIES 1. Paul Bear Bryant Glenn Pop Warner Joe Paterno Bobby Bowden Amos Alonzo Stagg STRAIGHT 500-YARD GAMES Florida State recorded at least 500 yards of total offense in a school-record 10 straight games this season. The only two games in which the Seminoles did not record at least 500 yards were the season-opener vs. BYU (375) and the season finale against Florida (443). The 1993 national championship had the previous best with a total of nine 500- yard games. TOUGH AGAINST THE RUSH IN 2000 Florida State opponents averaged only 73.9 yards per game on the ground this season, a total of only 887 total yards in 12 games. The Seminoles have allowed less than 100 yards rushing per game in each of the last five seasons. During the last five seasons, the Seminoles have limited their opponents to just over two yards per carry. Florida State led the ACC and ranked 10th in the nation in rush defense in 1999, and again led the league and ranked second nationally against the run this season. RUSH DEFENSE IN THE LAST FIVE SEASONS YEAR ATT TOTAL YDS YDS/CARRY YDS/GM , TOTALS 1,983 4, SOONERS HOLD RARE HAND AGAINST BOWDEN Bobby Bowden has played 60 different schools over his 25 years as head coach of the Seminoles. Among that group are just 4 five schools against whom he has a losing record, and four of those were single games that the Seminoles lost. The only team that Bowden has played more than once and has a losing record against is Oklahoma who FSU has played three times over the last 25 years and lost all three FSU VS. OU GAME MAY HAVE BEEN THE TURNAROUND Some Florida State fans consider the Seminoles trip to Norman, Oklahoma on September 26 of 1976 as one of the most important games in FSU history. While the Noles lost 24-9 to the Sooners in the third game of the season, the game is important in that it represented the complete change in Florida State football. After losing the season-opener to Memphis State and getting blistered at Miami 47-0, first year head coach Bobby Bowden decided to put his younger players in the lineup and build for the future. The Seminoles started seven true freshmen against the Sooners that day (FB Mark Lyle, WR s Kurt Unglaub and Mike Flowers, DT Walter Carter, DE Scott Warren, OG Mike Goode and kicker Dave Cappelen). After the loss to Oklahoma, FSU won five of it s last eight games with the only losses coming to powerhouses Clemson and Auburn, and rival Florida. FSU & OKLAHOMA PROMINENT ON NATIONAL LEVEL The Florida State Seminoles currently rank in the top-10 in seven of the 13 statistical categories kept by the NCAA, including two first-place rankings in total passing offense and total defense. The Oklahoma Sooners rank in the top-10 in six of the 13 categories, with their highest national ranking coming in pass efficiency defense where they are ranked second in Division I football. The Noles lead the Sooners in eight of the teamstatistic categories, including every offensive category. FSU s offensive edge continues in the individual rankings, as the Seminoles have the edge over the Sooners in all four offensive categories. EFFECT ON THAT ALL IMPORTANT THIRD DOWN The Florida State defense has been particularly stingy on third downs this season, allowing opponents to convert just 25% of third down attempts (48/191). While the FSU defense is holding teams on third down, the FSU offense has been impressive, converting on 74 of 169 attempts for a 44% conversion percentage. Oklahoma has had much the same result on offense and defense this season, converting on 45% of their third down tries and holding opponents to a 26% conversion. BOWDEN PASSES BEAR BRYANT With the victory over Georgia Tech on September 9th this season, Bobby Bowden passed Bear Bryant for fourth on the all-time wins at a single school list. Bowden has now won 242 games at FSU. Here s a list of the 2001 Orange Bowl Media Guide WEINKE RANKS AMONG BEST ALL-TIME Chris Weinke s streak of 25 consecutive wins, ended by Miami, ranks as the third (tie) best run by a starting quarterback in college football history. The 2000 Seminoles continued that tradition with a record 11 players bench pressing 500 pounds or more. OG Montrae Holland recorded the top bench press at 555 pounds. OG Justin Amman, OL Donald Heaven, C Antoine Mirambeau, LB Brian Allen, DE Jamal Reynolds, OT Todd Williams, TE Carver Donaldson, FB Chad Maeder, TE Nick Franklin and OT Brett Williams were the other 10 to reach the 500-lb. plateau. Thirty-eight Noles benched at least 400 pounds. Best Records By Senior Class (Five-year totals) Senior Class Record Pct WEINKE IN THE CLUTCH, PART TWO Last season, quarterback Chris Weinke s passing numbers were significantly better on FSU drives following opponent scores that tied the game or put FSU behind. Weinke finished the season 42-of-54 (77.8%) for 461 yards and five TDs (leading FSU to seven total TDs and two FGs in 14 drives) in those situations. Included in those figures was the go-ahead drive against Virginia Tech in which he went 6-for-7 for 58 yards and a TD. When FSU fell behind at Georgia Tech this season, Weinke went 7-for-7 for 156 yards in the fourth quarter (two TD drives) to lead FSU to a come-from-behind victory. Weinke went 19-for-32 for 299 yards (three TDs) in the second half against Miami to put FSU up with 1:37 remaining, before Miami drove down the field for the winning touchdown. SCORING EARLY FSU has scored on nine of their 12 opening drives this season (seven TDs, two FGs). The only drives the Seminoles did not score on were against Louisville (when an FSU receiver dropped a TD pass on fourth and goal from the one-yard line), Miami (when FSU failed on a fourth and one rush attempt) and TEAMS WITH 100 WINS IN THE 1990s TEAM W-L-T 1. He currently leads the team with 61 solo tackles and is fifth on the team with 82 total tackles. Cody s 82 are the most for an FSU cornerback since LeRoy Butler recorded 94 tackles in Free Safety Chris Hope is one tackle ahead of Cody with 83 on the year. In addition, Cody leads the team and ranks 16th nationally with six interceptions and has returned one of those for a TD. SCORING WITH THE LONG BALL In addition to leading the country in passing yardage, Chris Weinke finished the season second nationally with 33 touchdown passes. Of his 33 TD passes, 18 have been 30 yards or more. For the season, Weinke s average touchdown pass is 31.5 yards and 1,039 of his 4,167 yards have come on scoring strikes. He has found six different receivers for touchdowns this year (Marvin Minnis, Atrews Bell, Anquan Boldin, Javon Walker, Robert Morgan & Jeff Chaney). THREE RECEIVERS REACH CENTURY MARK IN TWO GAMES A feat that had occurred just once in FSU history prior to this season, happened twice in 2000 as Chris Weinke found three different receivers for 100 or more yards each in two separate games. Marvin Minnis (163), Atrews Bell (111) and Javon Walker (109) reached the century mark against Clemson, while Bell (146), Minnis (145) and Anquan Boldin (108) did it against Miami earlier in the year. 9 FORCING A LONG FIELD ON OPPONENTS Senior punter Keith Cottrell has averaged 39 or more yards per punt in eight of Florida State s 12 games this season. He has dropped nine punts inside the 10-yard line, allowed one or less net return yardage in five games and pinned the Seminoles opponent to an average starting position inside the 25- yard line in six games. In addition, FSU s 12 opponents have scored a total of only four touchdowns on the offensive series that directly followed a Cottrell punt. The Seminoles are holding their opponents to a total of 260 return yards on 48 Cottrell punts (5.42 yards per return) this season. RED ZONE DOMINANCE The Florida State defense has allowed just 13 total touchdowns this season with six of those coming on plays of more than 20 yards. In 18 trips into the red zone, Seminole opponents have scored just seven touchdowns (four field goals). FSU s top-rated offense has scored 40 touchdowns (10 field goals) in 65 red zone possessions. More than a third (23 of 63) of FSU s total touchdowns have come on plays of 20+ yards. OPPONENTS TOP RECEIVERS DON T SCORE ON FSU Florida State s secondary has not allowed a touchdown pass to the top receivers they have faced this year. Santana Moss, Jabar Gaffney, Koren Robinson, Rod Gardner plus five more of the nation s elite receivers failed to reach the endzone this year against FSU. Jeff Chaney (29 yards) and Davy Ford (82 yards) were responsible for the two big play scores on the ground. However, it will be a split Hart household as his son Rick is the Director of Marketing and Licensing at Oklahoma. The plot thickens considerably when one considers that Dave Hart, Sr. (father of Dave, grandfather of Rick) hired current Oklahoma athletics director Joe Castiglione when he was Director of Athletics at Missouri. The arrival of Rick Hart s first child just over a year ago means there will be four generations of the Hart family at the Orange Bowl. SEMINOLES TAKE ON THREE CONFERENCE CHAMPS IN 2000 Of Florida State s four non-conference opponents in 2000, three won their conference championships. FSU played Miami (Big East Champions), Florida (SEC Champs) and Louisville (Conference USA Champs). The only opponent who did not win their league was BYU who the Seminoles played in the season-opener. Ironically, the Noles could have played both teams that vied for the SEC Championship but Auburn ran out on a homeand-home series just months before last year s scheduled opener when Tommy Tuberville took over as coach. Louisiana Tech replaced Auburn at the last minute (literally) last year and Louisville was scheduled to take the spot this year. FSU defensive coordinator Mickey Andrews has said that he has never had a defensive back have a better season than All-American Tay Cody had this year. NO OVERTIME FOR SEMINOLES Florida State is one of only 15 Division 1A schools who have never played in an overtime game since the new rule was put in. The schools are: Akron, Colorado State, East Carolina, Marshall, Navy, North Texas, Northern Illinois, Ohio State, South Carolina, Temple, Texas Tech, Tulane, Tulsa, Wake Forest. Florida State has finished a game tied only four times in Bobby Bowden s 25 seasons. The last came in 1994 and the famous tie with Florida that came about after a 27-point FSU comeback in the fourth quarter. FSU tied North Carolina in Two games finished deadlocked in 1984 with a finish against Memphis State and a score in the Citrus Bowl against Georgia. Florida State University 9

While the Seminoles lost the chance to repeat the perfect season with a wide right field goal at the Orange Bowl, the 2000 season sees Bowden celebrating his 25th year at Florida State, his 51st year of marriage to Ann, a chance at a third national title, a chance at 317 career wins and he s 2-0 against Tommy and the Clemson Tigers. It has indeed been another great year. To put into perspective what Florida State s football program has done one must almost use another sport for analogy. Imagine a college basketball program advancing to the Final Four for the last 13 years in a row (with a chance at 14). Even more startling is the thought of a team playing in the national title game for it s fifth time in the last eight seasons. That s just what the Seminoles have done. FSU is on an NCAA record pace of 13 straight Top 14 finishes and the Orange Bowl will be the Tribe s third straight national title game and fifth in the last eight years. The Seminoles are at their best during bowl season the record books will show. The Noles are 13-2 over the last 15 years in bowl games and that stretch includes an NCAA record 11 straight wins. The Seminoles were the winningest college football program in the 1990 s, and won more games in the decade (108) than any team has over any previous decade in NCAA history. Bobby Bowden is a man so closely tied with the phenomenal success of his program that he, as much as Renegade and the war chant, is Florida State football. Gracious in both victory and defeat, Bowden is a man at peace with himself, a man with rock-solid character and firm coaching principles that date back more than 46 years. It s not enough that his coaching numbers have reached legendary proportions. Bowden also gives Florida State Uni- Florida State University 13

14 versity a proud moral leader, a family man of the first order, a caring disciplinarian, and a calming voice in the face of the turbulence surrounding college football. Perhaps the best tribute to the man is that he is not afraid to change with the times adapting brilliantly to new ways of winning games, as well as dealing with young student-athletes. From a sense of discipline and control, to a bold switch to the Fast Break offense, Bowden proves you re only as old as you feel. Like few other coaches before him, Bowden has created something of a monster which sits squarely on his shoulders. He has coached his Florida State teams so very close to perfection that the fans expect the moon. He has won 152 games over the last 14 seasons, including monumental wins over Miami, Notre Dame, Michigan, Nebraska, Penn State, North Carolina, Florida and others. In the fickle world of bigtime college sports, some forget what it is all about. Sure, Bobby Bowden is proud of his national championships, his place among the all-time greats, and a chance at a third national title. But as Bowden well understands at this stage of his career, there are things more important in life. He has time for charity and to give to his church. He has never walked past an admiring child without a wink and a smile. He greets total strangers, he listens and he cares. He is a father figure in the traditional sense. One of Bowden s greatest coaching achievements revolves around bowl games and his team s success in them. Bowden s record and.761 bowl winning percentage rank first all-time. Only Joe Paterno (20) has won more bowl games. Just three names remain ahead of Bowden on the all-time Division 1-A coaching list Bryant, Warner, and Paterno. Indeed, Florida State s eighth head coach has inked his name on the list of legends over 35 seasons at Samford, West Virginia and FSU. When Bowden first arrived in Tallahassee in 1976, he described his relationship with the school as a marriage and was determined to let no man put it asunder. True to his word, he completes his 25th season at FSU in the Orange Bowl. What Bobby Bowden means to Florida State University off the playing field cannot be measured. Respect, sincerity, class, honesty, charisma, charm and humor. Those are the words that describe and define this man not wins, losses, or coaching records. A wide-open, gambling style makes Bowden teams a treat to watch, a pleasure to play on and a delight to cover. Reverses, flea-flickers, laterals you name it, here it comes. A look at the record shows he s done it both ways. The flashy wins may get all the attention, but for every one of those, there are dozens of others spawned from sound fundamental football. By now it s been wellchronicled how the Birmingham native left the snow of West Virginia to come to Florida State and save the program. Three seasons after he walked on campus, he had taken one of the worst football teams in the country to within one game of a national championship. Bowden s record at Florida State is That includes a record in Tallahassee and a mark away from home. He has built those numbers against some of the nation s toughest schedules, earning respect for his team, attracting top players to his program and establishing his reputation as a competitor in the process. Bowden achieved impressive numbers in his previous coaching stops (31-6 at Samford University in Birmingham between 1959 and 1962, and at West Virginia from ), but what he has done at FSU is simply phenomenal. 17 times in 25 years, his Seminoles have won 10 or more games in a season. Florida State had been to just eight bowls in the 29 years before him. This year, the Seminoles play their 22nd bowl game since his arrival, including a string of 19 in a row and 15 New Year s Day trips. He is, by far, the winningest coach ever at Florida State as his win total is greater than the previous seven Seminole head coaches combined. Over his 25-year career at Florida State, Bowden has made the Seminoles a mainstay in the Associated Press polls. FSU has been ranked in the Top 25 in each of the last 215 polls dating back to the second week of the 1989 season. The Seminoles have been among the Top 10 for 98 consecutive polls and have spent 53 weeks at No. 1 since 1991, including one week this season. Florida State is the only school to finish among the Associated Press Top Four for 13 consecutive seasons. The Seminoles have finished first twice (1993, 1999), second twice (1987, 92), third four times (1988, 89, 97, 99), and fourth five times (1990, 91, 94, 95, 96). Since joining the league in football, FSU is 70-2 and has claimed (either outright or shared) nine ACC championships and set the league record for consecutive victories. Bowden picked up ACC Coach of the Year titles in 1993 and Rising above Bowden s coaching accomplishments, though, are his credentials as a man. Friendly and outgoing, he is a devoted Christian and family man. He loves people. His personality and charm are bigger than life. He has become somewhat of a folk hero in the south. A polished speaker, Bowden is constantly in demand. His busy coaching schedule curtails many speaking engagements, but any free evening will find him on the speaking circuit. His off-season travel schedule would exhaust anyone. Every free Sunday morning will find him in the pulpit of a church somewhere in the south. Outside of football, Bowden has an intense interest in World War II history and reads countless books and articles on the subject. He traced his ancestry to parts of Germany and has visited the country several times. Bowden was an outstanding football player at Woodlawn High School in Birmingham, Ala., and went on to Alabama as a freshman quarterback, fulfilling a lifelong dream to play for the Crimson Tide. After just one semester in Tuscaloosa, his childhood sweetheart, Ann Estock, lured him back to Birmingham. They soon married and Bobby transferred to Howard College (now Samford University) in Birmingham. Bowden s family has always been most important to him. The nation can follow Tommy s career as head coach at Clemson as well as Terry who is ABC s top college football studio analyst. The Bowden s oldest son, Steve, is in private business in Birmingham and youngest son, Jeff, is in his sixth season on the FSU staff. The four boys, daughters Robyn Hines and Ginger Madden, and 21 grandchildren make up the Bowden clan. Florida State University 15
