FSU is riding a 13-game winning streak and has not lost a regular season contest in 22 games, dating back to a loss at NC State (9/12/88). The Seminoles are undefeated (8-0) against Georgia Tech since joining the ACC in Heisman Trophy candidate Chris Weinke was named the Pigskin Classic MVP as he threw for 318 yards on 32-of-50 passing (two touchdowns) in FSU s 29-3 victory over BYU in Jacksonville on August 26th. Senior Marvin Minnis had a career day, catching nine passes for 137 yards and one score. Junior college transfer Javon Walker was impressive in his debut, pulling down eight passes for 70 yards and a TD. Jacksonville native Atrews Bell played well in front of his family and friends with a rushing and receiving touchdown. The Seminole defense answered the bell with a smothering performance against the Cougars. Senior defensive end Jamal Reynolds led the way with two sacks. He also caused two fumbles. One of those sacks resulted in two points as Reynolds brought down BYU quarterback Bret Engemann in the endzone. Clevan Thomas, Jerel Hudson and Derrick Gibson each recorded interceptions. BYU ended the night with (-2) yards rushing and completed just 18-of-46 passes. The three points scored by BYU was the lowest point total by a Seminole opponent in over a year. All-America candidate Tommy Polley did not start against BYU, but the senior did see significant playing time as he returned from reconstructive surgery after injuring his knee in the Sugar Bowl. True freshman Kendyll Pope earned the start at Polley s weakside linebacker spot. Polley will start at Georgia Tech. Senior Char-ron Dorsey, who was going to be redshirted this season, will now play this season according to the FSU coaching staff. Dorsey will share time with starters Tarlos Thomas and Brett Williams. With Dorsey now slated to see action, FSU may have the best trio of offensive tackles in the country. TELEVISION: ABC. 2 GLADDEN NAMED ASST. HEAD COACH Jim Gladden, in his 26th season at FSU (one year longer than Bobby Bowden) was named assistant head coach this summer. That role was formerly held by Chuck Amato, who took the head coaching job at NC State. Gladden has coached the defensive ends since 1996 and guided several current NFL standouts at that position, including Peter Boulware (Ravens), Reinard Wilson (Bengals) and Andre Wadsworth (Cardinals). Gladden will now also be responsible for handling many of Coach Bowden s administrative duties. COACHING CONTINUITY Along with Jim Gladden, several FSU coaches have been with the program for a number of years. Bowden s nine assistants average 19 years of collegiate experience (171 years total). Only two coaches have departed since the 1994 season. Billy Sexton (25th season) and Mickey Andrews (17th season) are next in line behind Gladden in tenure at FSU. KINES NAMED LINEBACKERS COACH With Chuck Amato taking the head coaching job at NC State, FSU brought in one of the top defensive coaches in the college game to take over as linebackers coach - Joe Kines. Kines brings an impressive resume with stops at Clemson, Florida, Tampa Bay (NFL), Arkansas and Georgia. Kines served as the defensive coordinator at Georgia from and was the Bulldogs assistant head coach last year before coming to Tallahassee. BOWDEN RECEIVES LOMBARDI AWARD Head coach Bobby Bowden was awarded the 1999 Vince Lombardi Award for coaching excellence on August 25th in Jacksonville, FL. The award was presented to Bowden by Joe Lombardi, chairman of the Lombardi Award committee and the brother of the late Hall of Fame coach for whom the award is named. Bowden is the fifth winner of the award, following Joe Gardi of Hofstra (1995), Paul Pasqualoni of Syracuse (1996), Joe Paterno of Penn State (1997) and Harold Tubby Raymond of Delaware (1998). BOWDEN ONE OF FIVE TO WIN 300 GAMES Bobby Bowden became the fifth Division I-A coach to record 300 wins with the victory at Clemson last season. Bowden s 305 wins rank second among active coaches behind only Penn State s Joe Paterno. Paterno (380 games) is the only coach to reach the 300-win mark quicker than Bowden (389 games). ALL-TIME DIV. Paul Bear Bryant Glenn Pop Warner Joe Paterno Amos Alonzo Stagg Bobby Bowden 305 FSU & BOBBY BOWDEN S SUCCESS Florida State is the only team in the history of college football to finish among the Associated Press Top Four for 13 consecutive seasons. FSU also has the NCAA record for most consecutive bowl victories as the Seminoles won 11-straight from 1986 to The Seminoles are the only team in the history of the game to post a 14-game bowl unbeaten streak. Florida State has won eight straight ACC championships and has lost just twice in 64 games against conference opponents. FSU players have won the Heisman, Thorpe (twice), Butkus (twice), Unitas (twice), Groza (twice), O Brien, Maxwell, and Lombardi Awards, all in the last 13 years. Bowden is the only coach in college football history to post 13-straight, 10-win seasons. Over the last 13 years, Florida State has won the Orange (3), Fiesta (2), Sugar (4), Blockbuster (1) and Cotton (1) Bowls. Bowden owns the nation s best all-time bowl winning percentage at.761 with a mark. His 17 victories rank second all-time (20, Paterno). At FSU, Bowden is in bowls.

3 BOWDEN MOVES INTO A TIE WITH BRYANT With the victory over BYU, Bobby Bowden has now won 232 games at FSU. That ties him with Bear Bryant in fourth place for all-time wins at a single school. 4 WEINKE RANKS AMONG BEST ALL-TIME Chris Weinke s streak of 21 consecutive wins ranks as the seventh best run by a starting quarterback in college football history. Weinke has not lost since FSU fell to NC State in the second game of the 1998 season. He would need to win eight straight in 2000 to move into a tie for second on the consecutive win list. The senior is currently sixth all-time with a career winning percentage of.957. Weinke could become the winningest (%) QB in college football in almost 30 years with a 3-0 start to the 2000 season (Miami s Steve Walsh, who was also a graduate of Cretin-Derham High School, was 23-1 from ). The complete charts are located on the right hand column of this page. NO PLACE LIKE DOAK Florida State currently owns the nation's longest home unbeaten streak (46 games) and the country's longest home winning streak (29 games). Miami, ranked No. 2 at the time, was the last team to win at Doak Campbell Stadium as the Hurricanes defeated top-ranked FSU, 17-16, on Nov. 16, Seminole placekicker Gerry Thomas' 34-yard field goal with less than 30 seconds to play sailed wide right, allowing the 'Canes to win that game. FSU s 28-point fourth quarter rally to tie Florida in 1994 continued the home unbeaten streak. WEINKE, ALLEN, JEUNE NAMED CAPTAINS Coach Bowden named the 2000 captains at the annual kickoff luncheon - QB Chris Weinke (offense), LB Brian Allen (defense) and LB Jean Jeune (special teams). Permanent captains are voted on by the team at the end of the season. 11 SEMINOLES BENCH PRESS 500 POUNDS It seems every year, FSU strength coach Dave Van Halanger is able to improve on what is labeled the strongest team in school history. The 2000 Seminoles continue that tradition with a record 11 players bench pressing 500 pounds or more. OG Montrae Holland recorded the top bench press at 555 pounds. OG Justin Amman, OL Donald Heaven, C Antoine Mirambeau, LB Brian Allen, DE Jamal Reynolds, OT Todd Williams, TE Carver Donaldson, FB Chad Maeder, TE Nick Franklin and OT Brett Williams were the other 10 to reach the 500-lb. plateau. 5 PASSING INTO THE RECORD BOOKS Chris Weinke, the first three-year starter in the Bowden era, needs just 389 yards to pass Gary Huff as FSU s all-time leader in passing yardage. Weinke trails Danny Kanell by nine for the career touchdown passes record. Weinke already owns the school record with 22, 200- yard passing games. The only time he did not throw for 200 yards was in the 1998 Virginia game, when he played a half before suffering a season-ending neck injury. THE CLASS OF THE SEMINOLES Florida State dominating success on the football field during the decade of the 1990's is well documented ( ,.890 winning percentage, two national championships). The Seminoles current crop of redshirt seniors (players in their fifth year in the program) have helped Florida State win 46 of its 50 games played (.920 winning percentage) since the beginning of the 1996 season. In addition, the Seminoles fourth-year players (true seniors and redshirt juniors) have won 35 of 38 (.921 winning percentage), the third year-players (true juniors and redshirt sophomore) have won 24 of 26 games (.923 winning percentage) while the second-year players (true sophomore and redshirt freshmen) are a perfect Current Seminoles Record By Class Class (Yrs. in program) Record Pct. 5th Year Players th Year Players rd Year Players nd Year Players WEINKE BETTER UNDER PRESSURE IN 1999 When Virginia Tech scored to take a lead in the Sugar Bowl, it marked the 14th time during the 1999 season that an opponent had tied or taken the lead on the Seminoles. On the ensuing FSU possessions, Chris Weinke led the Tribe to a score nine times (seven TDs, two FGs). In the go-ahead drive against Virginia Tech, Weinke went 6-for-7 for 58 yards and a TD (and a twopoint conversion pass) to give FSU the lead for good at For the year on those 14 possessions, Weinke was 42-of-54 (77.8%) for 461 yards and five touchdowns. 6 FSU LEADS ACC IN GRADUATES The Seminoles have always performed both well in the classroom and this year s team is no different. Florida State and Virginia lead the ACC with five graduates on the current 2000 roster. Brian Allen, Tay Cody, Jean Jeune, Jarad Moon and Ryan Sprague have already received their diplomas. According to a recent article, Boston College leads the nation in that category with eight while four other football programs checked in with six. Here are some other academics notes: 19 of 28 scholarship football players are on schedule to graduate by the Bowl game 23 scholarship players had at least a 3.0 GPA this summer 13 scholarship players had at least a 3.5 GPA this summer 4 scholarship players had a 4.0 GPA this summer FSU IN THE WEEKLY AP POLL The Seminoles have been ranked in every AP poll since the fifth week of the 1989 season spanning 184 consecutive polls. Of the last 154 polls (11/12/90), the Seminoles have been out of the AP Top 10 just twice. Additionally, Florida State has been at No. 1 for a total of 57 weeks. DEFENSE CONSISTENTLY AT THE TOP The Seminoles have ranked among the nation s top 10 in total defense in six of the last nine years, including a No. 1 national ranking in FSU has been in the nation s top 10 in rushing defense in eight of the last nine years (No. 1 in 1996, 1997, No. 2 in 1998 & No. 10 in 1999). In pass efficiency, the Tribe ranked first nationally in 1998 and has been among the 10 best in five of the last seven years. FSU has also ranked in the top 10 nationally in scoring defense in five of the last seven seasons. WEINKE ON THE CARRY Chris Weinke called his own number on a running play in the second quarter against BYU. On a firstand-10 play from the Cougars' 27 yard line, Weinke took off running and recorded a career-long rush of 21 yards. His run brought the ball to the six yard line where Atrews Bell scored the Seminoles' third touchdown of the night on a six-yard run. His previous career-long rushing attempt was an eight-yard gain against Clemson last year. 7 HELPING THE SEMINOLES GET OFFENSIVE Florida State is the only team in the ACC to have at least one member of the offensive line earn All-ACC first-team honors in each of the last eight years. Senior offensive tackle Tarlos Thomas and offensive guard Jason Whitaker (exhausted eligibility following the 1999 season) were All-ACC first-team selections last season. The Seminoles have won six outright ACC titles and shared two more during that period. WEINKE SUCCESSFUL ON THIRD DOWN Heisman candidate Chris Weinke was very effective on sustaining drives in the Seminoles' season-opening victory against Brigham Young. In third-down situations, Weinke was nine-of-13 for 108 yards and converted more than half (seven of 13,.538) of his third down situations into drive-continuing first downs. Included in the first down plays were pass completions of 34, 19, 17 and 15 yards. Another third down play that resulted in a gain of 11 yards and a first down, was called as defensive pass interference which gave the Seminoles a first down and led directly to FSU's second touchdown of the game and a 13-0 lead. REYNOLDS OFF TO A GOOD START All-America candidate Jamal Reynolds was named Tomahawk player of the game for the defense following the BYU game. Reynolds was credited with two sacks, two pressures, two forced fumbles and a safety. The senior also led the team with 11 intimidations. 8 MINOR A DOAK WALKER CANDIDATE Tailback Travis Minor is one of 35 preseason candidates for the 2000 Doak Walker Award, presented annually to the nation s top college running back. Minor joins fellow ACC backs LaMont Jordan (Maryland) and Ray Robinson (NC State) on the list. POLLEY LEADS BLOCK PARTY IN 1999 After blocking just one kick in 1998, FSU blocked a total of seven last year. Linebacker Tommy Polley led the way with blocks in three of the Seminoles biggest games. Polley blocked a field goal against Miami and punts that led to scores against Florida and Virginia Tech. Cornerback Tay Cody sealed FSU s win over Clemson when he partially blocked a 41-yard field goal attempt with less than two minutes left in the game. Against Virginia, noseguard Corey Simon blocked a punt in one of the best all-around games of his career. David Warren and Malcolm Tatum got into the action as each blocked a punt vs. Maryland. FSU has blocked 72 punts in the Bowden era (since 1976) and 20 in the 1990s. WARRICK RUN WINS PLAY OF THE YEAR Peter Warrick had several plays in 1999 that would be worthy of play of the year consideration. One in particular earned national recognition as the Compaq College Football Play of the Year. Warrick s 20-yard TD run on a reverse, on which he changed direction several times and bobbled the ball once, against Louisiana Tech in last year s season opener was named the winner. A 20 x30 painting of the play will be displaced at the NCAA College Football Hall of Fame and an additional painting will be given to FSU at halftime of the UNC game. Ricky Williams was named the 1998 winner with his record breaking run against Texas A&M. ALLEN & POLLEY UP FOR BUTKUS AWARD Senior outside linebackers Tommy Polley and Brian Allen are two of 70 candidates listed on the 2000 Butkus Award Watch List. The list will be trimmed to 10 semifinalists on October 19th. FSU has had two players win the Butkus - Paul McGowan (1987) and Marvin Jones (1992). Allen is the Seminoles defensive captain and has started 38 consecutive games and helped the Tribe to a 35-3 record in those games. Polley led FSU in tackles with 109 a year ago and also broke up five passes, recorded three sacks, caused three fumbles and recovered two. TEAMS WITH 100 WINS IN THE 1990s Team W-L-T 1. Eleven different Seminoles recorded interceptions last year with safeties Chris Hope and Derrick Gibson leading the way with four each. Three players returned them for touchdowns - Sean Key, Abdual Howard and Theon Rackley. The 1999 defense came up three interceptions shy of the school record for interceptions (25). SEMINOLES CONTINUE INTERCEPTING Three Seminoles (Clevan Thomas, Derrick Gibson and Jerel Hudson) recorded interceptions against Brigham Young in the season opener. It marked the fifth consecutive regular season game that Florida State's defense had intercepted at least one pass. The Seminole defense has recorded at least one interception in nine of the last 10 regular season games. He recorded five punts of 40 yards or more and boomed a 51- yarder during the third quarter. If not for a seven-yard effort during the fourth quarter, Cottrell would have averaged better than 43 yards per kick on the night. Cottrell punted well as he allowed Brigham Young to begin past their own 25 only three times on the night and pinned the Cougars on their own two in the third quarter. SAWYER HAS SOLID DEBUT AT SNAPPER Deep snapper Brian Sawyer, who took over for fouryear starter Clay Ingram this season, received high mark from Seminole coaches for his performance against BYU. Sawyer was a perfect five-for-five on placement snaps to holder Keith Cottrell and was also perfect on all eight punt snaps.
