The Sooners advanced to the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship Game at San Antonio s Alamodome where they vanquished Missouri, OU then dropped a decision to West Virginia in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The Sooners ranked No. 8 in both final polls. Conference Title No. 41: Oklahoma won its 41st conference championship, a remarkable feat considering the Sooners have held conference membership for just 93 of their 113 football seasons. OU has won a conference title in nearly half of its league seasons (44%). All-American Nos. 143 and 144: LB Curtis Lofton and OG Duke Robinson both earned consensus All-America honors in The Sooner program has averaged 1.3 All-Americans per year since its inception, which actually predates All-America teams. Sooners Play Another Difficult Schedule: Oklahoma played a schedule comprised solely of FBS opponents in Four of those opponents were ranked. Missouri held the No. 1 ranking when it lost to OU in the Dr Pepper Big 12 Championship game, Ten Win: Oklahoma won at least 10 games for the 30th time in its history. No other program has hit double digits that often. Alabama is second on that list with 28. Close Losses: Four of Oklahoma s last seven losses came on the game s final play, including the 2007 setback at Colorado. All four of those defeats took place away from Norman. OU in the Polls: Oklahoma has now spent 658 weeks ranked in the Associated Press College Football Poll. That ranks No. 4 all-time, No. 1 among teams in the Big 12 Conference. With 95 weeks ranked at No. 1, Oklahoma and Notre Dame have held that spot more than any other college program. The Opted for Early NFL Entry: Three players who were juniors in 2007 decided to forgo their senior season to enter the NFL Draft. Those three were WR Malcolm Kelly, LB Curtis Lofton and CB Reggie Smith. Rankings Recap OU players and units that ranked among the top 25 nationally in Team Kickoff returns, No. 1, Passing efficiency, No. 1, Scoring offense, No. 5, Sacks allowed, No. 5, 1.0 Rushing defense, No. 17, Tackles for loss, No. 17, 7.36 Scoring defense, No. 19, Individual Passing efficiency, Sam Bradford, No. 1, Kickoff returns, DeMarco Murray, No. 7, Tackles, Curtis Lofton, No. 7, Sacks, Auston English, No. 15, 0.86 Kickoff returns, Juaquin Iglesias, No. 16, OKLAHOMA SPRING FOOTBALL GUIDE SOONERSPORTS.COM * Big Crowds Follow Stoops Era Oklahoma has drawn 4,499,034 fans for Bob Stoops 56 home games (started in 1999) and all 56 have been sold out. The Sooners are 54-2 on Owen Field under their current head coach. The current string of sellouts is the second longest in school history, trailing a string of 69 from The average home attendance of 84,858 in 2007 was a school record. The top eight seasons for football attendance at Oklahoma came on Stoops watch. The crowd of 85,357 that gathered for the 07 Miami game is the largest in OU history. Oklahoma has exceeded its listed seating capacity of 82,112 at Gaylord Family - Oklahoma Memorial Stadium in each of its last 30 home games. Oklahoma has played before sellout crowds in 100 of the 119 games (home, away, neutral) since Stoops became the head coach. During that time, a total of 8,598,842 (average of 72,259) have watched the Sooners. The figure should over over 1 billion some time in the 2009 campaign. Did You Know? The Sooners have had held a double-digit lead in 99 of the 119 games Bob Stoops has coached at Oklahoma. Looking Ahead to 2008 Some 27 players who filled a starting role last season return. That compares with 29 last season, 26 in 2006 and 17 in Category Leaders: The Sooners return their top passer (Sam Bradford), top receiver (Juaquin Iglesias), top kick returner (Iglesias), leader in total offense (Bradford), in all-purpose yards (Iglesias) and punter (Mike Knall). They must replace their leading rusher (Allen Patrick), their leader in field goals (Garrett Hartley), in tackles (Curtis Lofton), in interceptions (D.J. Wolfe) and fumble recoveries (Wolfe).. The 2007 team was the second-highest scoring team in OU history with 592 points. It was just the fifth Oklahoma team to eclipse 500 points, but the third for Stoops. The team went over 50 points five times season, over 60 twice and over 70 once. Two Plays = First Down Plus Some Oklahoma averaged 6.4 yards per play last season, the most since 1987 when the Sooners led the nation in rushing, scoring and total offense. Banner Year for Bradford Sam Bradford had one of the best freshman years in NCAA history... Led the nation in passing effiency at , just ahead of Heisman winner Tim Tebow. Had consecutive completion strings of 22 and 21 to break Jason White s OU record of 18 and challenge the NCAA mark of 24 set by Tennessee s Tee Martin. Had multiple TD passes in 10 games, school record (tied) five TD passes vs. Miami and Texas A&M, hit at least 65% in 10 games, no INT in five games, at least one 30-yard pass in all games. Runs Like a Song Oklahoma s Juaquin Iglesias proved to be one of the nation s most versatile players last season... INT vs. Oklahoma St. About the Sooner Defense 2008 OKLAHOMA SPRING FOOTBALL GUIDE SOONERSPORTS.COM OU forced at least one turnover in 106 of Bob Stoops 119 games and has at least one interception in 78 of the last 104; multiple picks in 32 of the last 74 outings. Oklahoma has nine shutouts under its current head coach. Opponents failed to score more than seven points 29 times and scored less than 14 in 56 games. English Lesson DE Auston English emerged last season as one of the nation s top pass rushers... With 9.5 sacks, English tied with Torrance Marshall (1999) for the 14th-best single season total in school history. It was the second-best total in the Stoops era behind the 10 by Calvin Thibodeaux (2005) and Dan Cody (2004, 2003). English broke a non-weight-bearing bone in his right leg in the Texas A&M game. A rod was inserted and he missed the next three contests. He returned for the Big 12 Championship game and the Fiesta Bowl with the rod still in place. Rip and Run Bob Stoops teams have been notorious for their interception return yardage. The 2007 team was among OU s best in that department... Oklahoma had 19 interceptions for 346 interception return yards and three touchdowns. That yardage total ranked No. 3 since Stoops became the head coach. The 2002 team put up a ridiculous 516 return yards on 24 interceptions. The 2000 National Champions notched 369 return yards, also on 24 picks. The 2007 OU defenders touched the ball 70 times (5.4 times per game) with 42 PBUs, 19 interceptions and nine fumble recoveries. To put that in perspective, opposing teams have just 46 touches in 27 break-ups, 11 fumble recoveries and eight interceptions. OU averaged 18.0 yards on INT/fumble returns with five touchdowns to tie the school record set in 1956, 2000 and Stoops Era Staple: Run Defense Last season, six opponents rushed for 66 or fewer yards. Eighteen times, Bob Stoopscoached Oklahoma teams have held opponents under 40 rushing yards in a game. Four times the total has resulted in negative yards. Slackers? 9 About the Sooner Special Teams Oklahoma s special teams under Bob Stoops... There have been 25 special teams TDs, including 19 in the last 64 regular season games. Those 19 came via five different kinds of plays punt returns, two faked FG, two blocked punts, four kickoff returns and a faked punt. Special teams also own one safety in that span. In total, OU has returned eight kickoffs and 14 punts for TDs on Stoops watch (since 1999). The Sooners have blocked 21 kicks. Many Happy Returns Information on returns during the Stoops era... Kickoff Returns --76 returns of 25 yards or more with eight TD. Punt Returns returns of 15 or more yards with 14 TD. Interception Returns returns of 10 or more yards with 20 TD. Fumble Returns -- four returns of 15 or more yards with five TD. OU Leads Nation in Kickoff Returns Oklahoma s kickoff returns led the nation for 2007 with an average of yards per return... The Sooners had 19 kickoff returns that covered at least 30 yards. Four different players had a return of more than 35 yards. All five players who returned kicks last season averaged at least 24 yards. DeMarco Murray ran 81 yards for a touchdown against Tulsa on the second kickoff return of his college career. His first came earlier in that same game. He then went for 91 yards and a touchdown against Baylor. Knall Emerges at Punter Mike Knall started last season as the backup punter, but won the starting job in the 10th game (vs. Baylor) and held it for the remainder of the season. Prior to that time he had been used mostly in short-yardage situations as the pooch punter... Finished the season 24 punts for an average of He unleashed a 66-yarder, the longest of the season for OU, against Missouri in the Big 12 Championship game. In his five starting assignments, he averaged 42.2 yards per punt and was under 40 yards in just one game (39.5 vs. Baylor). His best game was the Missouri tilt with four punts for a 49.5-yard average. Hartley Wraps Up Stellar Career K Garrett Hartley wrapped up a tremendous career... Hartley finished his career with 43 games, 47-of-58 on field goals and 169-of-176 on PAT kicks. He ranks No. 6 in OU history with 310 points, No. 3 in field goals and No. 4 on extra points. Hartley may be most missed for his kickoffs. As a senior, he averaged 66.8 yards with a whopping 29 touchbacks. Three kickers figure to vy for the open positiion. The three are redshirt freshmen Jimmy Stevens and Matthew Moreland and true freshman Tress Way. That fact alone carries plenty of intrigue, but it s really nothing more than a sub plot to what is happening in Norman. For a program to truly become a program it must transcend any one person, a message head coach Bob Stoops, the recipient of much of the undesired credit, has preached consistently relative to Oklahoma s success during his tenure. Stoops has seen four of his assistant coaches move on to head coaching jobs at major universities. Even before the 2008 draft, he witnessed 32 NFL draft choices, including eight of the first round variety, rise from the Sooner camp. And yet the program keeps winning. Since 2000, no college program can top Oklahoma s 90 victories. In Stoops nine years, Oklahoma has won fewer than 10 games just two times. The five Big 12 crowns are three more than OU s closest competitor. In 2008, with much of the cast responsible for last year s league title returning, OU, the first program to win two straight Big 12 Championships, will shoot for three in a row. The Offense Most of the returning players on this team reside on offense. That said, there is still the matter of replacing some key performers in the rushing and receiving corps. Otherwise, this is an offense with a lot of experience and ability to produce. Sam Bradford returns at quarterback after one of the most surprisingly pleasant freshman seasons anyone can remember. He ll throw to a a group of receivers that features last season s top passcatcher, Juaquin Iglesias, and TE Jermaine Gresham; hand off to a backfield that combined for more than 1,300 on their own and toil behind 2008 OKLAHOMA SPRING FOOTBALL GUIDE SOONERSPORTS.COM * a mammoth offensive line that returns seven of the eight players that were on last season s two-deep. The message for that collection of players is to become more consistent. While the 2007 team ranked No. 5 in scoring offense (42.3), there is hope that the group can cash in a higher percentage of possessions and develop more dominance in imposing its will. Quarterbacks Sam Bradford s freshman season turned in to quite possibly the best freshman season for any quarterback. With uncanny accuracy, he set an NCAA frosh mark with 36 touchdown passes and led the nation in passing efficiency (176.5). Bradford is back and so are the two players who worked in support of him last season. Joey Halzle, a senior, completed 30-of-51 attempts for 454 yards and three touchdowns against just one interception. Keith Nichol, a sophomore, played less, but still managed to impress with his savvy, arm strength and athletic ability. During the signing period, OU added 6-5 Landry Jones, one of the highest rated prep quarterbacks in the nation. Running Backs For the second time in as many years Oklahoma loses a 1,000-yard rusher, but doesn t flinch. DeMarco Murray missed the last three games of the season due to injury, but still ran for 764 yards and 13 touchdowns in his freshman season. The burner scorched Utah State for a 92-yard touchdown run and returned two kickoffs for TDs, a 91-yarder against Baylor and an 81-yarder against Tulsa. Chris Brown, a junior, continued as Mr. Dependable, rolling up 611 yards. He scored nine touchdowns and proved to be OU s most effective ballcarrier in short-yardage situations. He rushed 25 times on third down and was successful on 21 of those with a first down and/or touchdown. Both Murray and Brown will miss spring practices while recuperating

11 2008 Outlook from surgery so the door will be open for talented and versatile Mossis Madu. He rushed 40 times for 232 yards (5.8./carry) last season and could be a dangerous receiver. Signing day also yielded a couple players who might be ready to go from day one. Both Jermie Calhoun and Justin Johnson were decorated prep players and both have physical qualities that should serve them well on the college level. The fullback position endured the loss of Ian Pleasant and Dane Zaslaw, but is still well-stocked. Brody Eldridge is listed as a tight end, but often lines up at H-back and was so highly regarded as a blocker that he earned first-team All-Big 12 fullback honors last season even though he had no rushing attempts. Another candidate is Matt Clapp, who redshirted last season after playing in his freshman campaign. With the bulk he added last season and his athletic ability, coaches expect Clapp to contribute in a significant way. Receivers For the definition of breakout season see Juaquin Iglesias, The Killeen, Texas, native entered last season with 60 career receptions for 804 yards through two seasons. Then, as a junior, he led Oklahoma with 68 grabs for 907 yards and five touchdowns. Iglesias also emerged as one of the nation s most dangerous kick returners and rushed eight times for a 10.9-yard average. He ll likely have one of the outside spots. Other candidates Quentin Chaney, Adron Tennell and Brandon Caleb. Chaney, a senior, had the best game of his career in the Fiesta Bowl and his four-catch, 129-yard outing is cause for optimism. Tennell was off to a good start last season with a 22.8-yard per catch average, but suffered a season ending knee injury at Texas Tech. He will sit out the spring drills. DEMARCO MURRAY an injury hardship ruling to have his sophmore year restored and coaches are excited to watch his progress. A pair of redshirts will be in the mix, too, in Tyler Stradford and Corey Wilson. In the slot, watch for speedy Manuel Johnson, a senior, who had 31 grabs last season for 448 yards. Oklahoma s top 10 recruiting class was perhaps rated the highest at the receiver position with three big and physical players joining the roster. It is not difficult to envision those three, Joshua Jarboe, Dejuan Miller and Jameel Owens, on the field early in their careers. At tight end, OU welcomes back talented Jermaine Gresham, who became a touchdown reception as a sophomore. His 11 TD grabs exceeded the best total ever turned in by a Sooner tight end. The swift big man is a nightmarish match-up. Eldridge will play at the tight end spot as will Eric Mensik, who figures to see the most extensive action of his career. Offensive Line A quick glance at the depth chart would seemingly leave the Oklahoma coaches gushing, but that s not the case. While OU returns seven of eight from last season s two-deep, including all five starters, the Sooner coaches sing a recurring theme -- consistency. They know that the success of the aerial game depends on the ability to establish the rushing attack, and they want more productivity in that area. The numbers on which the team will build on pretty impressive. OU quarterbacks dropped into the pocket 415 times last season and were sacked just 14 times. In addition, the team averaged yards on the ground while throwing for S E A S O N C OAC H I N G S TA F F T H E S O O N E R S S E A S O N R E V I E W U N I V E R S I T Y Caleb also missed nearly all of last season due to injury, but he received * * * * * * NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 11

Left guard Duke Robinson was a consensus All-American last season and right guard Brandon Walker out-graded the other four starters on the coaches charts. The returning center is the venerable Jon Cooper, whose string of 29 consecutive starts is the longest on the team. In many cases, the backups can t be considered backups. Most are good enough to challenge for starting spots. Among the tackles are Cory Brandon, redshirt freshman Donald Stephenson and incoming freshmen Stephen Good and Britt Mitchell. At guard, those in the mix include Brian Simmons and redshirt freshmen Jason Hannan and Alex Williams. The center reserves will be Hannan and incoming freshman Ben Habern. The line returns a number of starters, but the coaches talk about competition in the trenches probably as much as any other position on the team. It s obvious that the one thing that may outweigh the experience on the line is its depth. The resulting challenges for playing time should make things interesting. The Defense Things are a little different than what they appeared to be even as late as early January. Graduation and early professional departures have given the spring some added meaning in identifying players who will step into more prominent roles. Across the front four, the Sooners appear set with experience and depth. The questions loom at linebacker and in the secondary where the early departures and graduation hit hardest. Spring ball will be critical and new players that will join the team in August will have opportunities for immediate playing time. Defensive Line At defensive end, Oklahoma is one better than it might have been since a sixth year was granted to John Williams. Now comes the hard part -- battling back from Achilles tendon surgery to regain the form that led him to start three of the first four games in If Williams can get back, he ll be teamed with some good ones. Auston English, No. 15 in the nation last season with 9.5 sacks, returns along with Jeremy Beal and Alan Davis, both of whom have previous starting experience, and Pryce Macon, who has played in a reserve role. The list of newcomers has those around the program excited, too, with Frank Alexander and Jontae Bumpus getting their first shot at live action along with true freshmen David King and R.J. Washington. Alexander was impressive in his redshirt season, while Bumpus spent 2007 recuperating from pre-season surgery. Linebackers The Sooners will re-tool at linebacker and introduce some new faces. The most experienced returnee is Ryan Reynolds, the starter on the weak side last season, but now a candidate for the middle position. Lamont Robinson was a reserve at middle linebacker last season and also will vie for the playing time. On the weak side, players that will get a look include returnees Brandon Crow, who played last season on special teams, 2007 redshirt Travis Lewis and incoming freshman Daniel Franklin. The strong side will feature competition among transplanted safety Keenan Clayton, who was a starter in 2006, and junior college signee J.R. Bryant. Two players who figure to get snaps on both the strong and weak sides include redshirt freshman Austin Box and junior college transfer Mike Balogun OKLAHOMA SPRING FOOTBALL GUIDE SOONERSPORTS.COM *

13 2008 Outlook Defensive Backs Like linebacker, the secondary will feature a number of new starters. That s not to say the defensive backfield is devoid of experience. Nic Harris will be back for his third season as a starter after getting the nod in all 14 games of the 2007 season at strong safety and Lendy Holmes is back after playing extensively as a corner and nickel. Harris will likely hold down the strong safety and nickel positions with junior college transfer David Sims and redshirt freshman Sam Proctor in pursuit. Holmes will get a look at free safety along with redshirt freshman Desmond Jackson. The field corners include Dominque Franks, who started the Fiesta Bowl, and Jonathan Nelson, while the boundary side will include sophomore Brian Jackson and redshirt freshman Jamell Fleming. Newcomer Joseph Iboloye will compete for one of the safety spots, but coaches want a chance to work him out before determining which one. The Special Teams There won t be much need for a program to identify the key special teams personnel -- with one exception, they re all the same from a year ago when the special teams logged a stellar season. Kicker Garrett Hartley was a fixture for the previous four seasons. A Groza Award finalist as a junior, he left OU as one of the most productive kickers in school history. Hartley excelled in the most recognizable categories, field goals and points after touchdown, but those who witnessed his career know that the attribute may be missed most is in the area of kickoffs. RYAN REYNOLDS Those who will compete for the kicking job include redshirt freshmen Jimmy Stevens and Matthew Moreland and true freshman Tress Way. Punter Mike Knall as a junior, so much so that he won the starting job in game 10. With an average of 43.7 yards and an impressive hang time, Knall fits the bill. He s also adept at pinning opponents deep. Last season, he dropped down six of 24 punts inside the 20 with only two touchbacks. Returners Oklahoma led the nation in kickoff returns last season and will return its two most lethal, Juaquin Iglesias and DeMarco Murray. Reggie Smith must be replaced as the primary punt returner, but Dominque Franks is a solid candidate. Look for others to get a shot as spring provides ample opportunity to audition several. Deep Snapper Derek Shaw has had the job for the last two seasons and the coaching staff also likes his backup, Kyle Johnson. Holder Hays McEachern had the job the last two seasons, but wrapped up his eligibility and will be missed. The Sooners will review replacements during spring drills S E A S O N C OAC H I N G S TA F F T H E S O O N E R S S E A S O N R E V I E W U N I V E R S I T Y Prior to his senior season, the college kickoff location was moved back from the 35 to the 30, but Hartley showed no ill effects. He still booted 29 touchbacks compared to only two by OU opponents. * * * * * * NATIONAL CHAMPIONS 13
