2 HOWARD, SEILUND LAND ALL-WCC NODS Rachel Howard earned first team All-WCC honors after leading the conference in scoring during WCC play at 20.8 points per game, while Anna Seilund took home second team recognition as one of the WCC s most effective three-point shooters during conference action, ranking in the top-10 in three-point percentage (36.2) and three-pointers made (34). For Howard, it was her third All-WCC nod after earning honorable mention honors last season and all-freshman recognition in This marked Seilund s first all-conference award. It was the third year in a row the Dons have had a first team performer after Taylor Proctor s selection in and POUR IT ON Rachel Howard s career-high 37 points against Pepperdine this past Saturday was the thirdhighest single game total in USF history, matching Mary Hile (vs. Oregon, Feb. 25, 1979) and Brittany Lindhe (at Gonzaga, Jan. 14, 1995). Teri Hunt owns the USF record of 42 points in a game, which she accomplished against San Diego on Jan. 31, Earlier this year, Howard scored a then-career high 30 points against Seattle on Nov. 15 that made her the 37th player in USF history to score at least 30 in a game. The last Don to do so was Taylor Proctor, who had 32 against UC Riverside on Dec. 4, BY THE NUMBERS (WCC) 69.4 (3) Scoring Offense 71.7 (1) 69.1 (7) Scoring Defense 57.6 (1) 77.8 (1) FT % 77.1 (2) 40.4 (5) FG % 42.4 (3) 35.7 (1) 3 FG % 33.0 (5) +0.2 (5) Reb Margin +8.2 (2) 2.8 (8) Blocks/Game 4.8 (1) 13.4 (7) Assists/Game 15.6 (3) 6.9 (8) Steals/Game 8.4 (4) CRUNCH TIME While Rachel Howard leads the Dons in scoring in the last quarter of games this year (4.9 points), it s junior Michaela Rakova who has been the most efficient down the stretch, shooting 50 percent in fourth quarter situations. Likewise, Anna Seilund has helped ice numerous games this season with her teambest 82.8 percent from the free throw line over the last 10 minutes. BEYOND THE ARC The Dons come into the WCC Tournament leading the conference shooting 36 percent from the perimeter. Senior Rachel Howard (40.7 percent) and redshirt junior Kalyn Simon (38.5) rank third and fourth in the WCC, respectively, from long range, while Howard s 66 triples trail Santa Clara s Emily Wolph (71) for the most in the WCC during the regular season. ONWARDS AND UPWARDS Rachel Howard has been steadily climbing up the USF career scoring list over the course of her senior season. She surpassed Rheina Ale ( ) for 11th place with 1,327 career points after scoring 17 against Loyola Marymount on Thursday. Howard has also taken over second place in the USF record book with 185 career three-pointers made, trailing Shay Rollins ( ), who holds the USF career record with 205 treys. Meanwhile, Anna Seilund moved into sixth place with 130 career triples. MAKE EM IF YOU GET EM As a team, the Dons lead the WCC from the free throw line where they are shooting 77.6 percent on the year. USF made a season-high 31 free throws in a win over LMU on Feb. 23, while Rachel Howard set a program record by going 14-for-14 from the stripe. ABOUT GONZAGA The Zags defeated Pacific, 91-59, on Friday to advance to the semifinals. Gonzaga leads the conference in many statistical categories, including scoring offense (71.7 points per game) and scoring defense (57.6). First team All-WCC forward Jill Barta ranks fourth in the conference at 16.4 points per game. Kiara Kudron sits at fifth in the WCC grabbing 7.8 rebounds per contest, and has been one of the conference s top shooters, ranking third at 51.1 percent from the field. USF VS. GONZAGA SERIES SNIPPETS Gonzaga owns a lead in the all-time series, but it was USF who took the last meeting, in San Francisco. The two teams split the season series, winning their respective home games. USF s win last year snapped a 21 game losing streak to the Zags that stretched back to the season, but Gonzaga has still won 22 of the last 23 matchups. USF and Gonzaga endured a four-overtime marathon on Feb. 7, 2015 in which the Zags claimed a victory. USF s longest winning streak in the series was nine in a row between the and seasons. The Dons won 15 of 17 matchups between and Gonzaga won the first-ever meeting, 57-36, in USF is against the Zags all-time at home. JOIN THE CLUB Howard s three-pointer on her first attempt of the game at Pacific on Jan. 14 put her over 1,000 points for her career. She became the 22nd player in USF history to reach that milestone. WHO S WHO? This year s USF squad features plenty of familiar faces, as the Dons only lost two seniors from their WCC Championship season a year ago. With the departure of Taylor Proctor and Zhane Dikes, USF enjoys the return of starters Rachel Howard, Michaela Rakova and Anna Seilund. Every other player on the roster returns this season, while the Dons added a pair of freshman guards in Anna Pierce (Plano, Texas / Parish Episcopal HS) and Nia Alexander (Federal Way, Wash. / Todd Beamer HS). 3 BEC BLACK INKS NLI USF received a commitment from Australian forward/center Bec Black during the early signing period. The 6-foot-2-inch Black, who hails from Coffs Harbour, New South Wales, captained Barker College to its first Independent Sporting Association Championship in nine years. Along with playing for her school team, Black played two years for the Hornsby Ku-ring-gai Spiders. She earned State Grand Final Most Valuable Player in her final year of U18 action as the team became the U18 Metropolitan winners and finished as the state championship runners-up by a slim one-point margin. In 2014, she was the youngest player for the Waratah League Championship women s team. DONS TABBED 7TH IN PRESEASON POLL USF was voted to finish in 7th place in the annual West Coast Conference preseason poll. Gonzaga, BYU and Saint Mary s took home the top three spots in the poll. San Diego, Santa Clara and LMU came in 4th, 5th and 6th, respectively, while Pacific, Pepperdine and Portland rounded out the bottom three slots. WHERE DID THEY COME FROM? The Dons entered the 2016 West Coast Conference Championships as the No. 6 seed and went on to upset No. 1-seed BYU in the final, becoming the lowest seed to ever win the conference crown. Along the way, USF topped No. 2 seed Saint Mary s and No. 3 seed San Diego.
