The Redhawks beat Eastern Illinois (79-60) in , Tennessee State (70-69) in , UT Martin (81-79) in , and lost to Austin Peay (91-67) in The Redhawks enter Saturday s matchup against Tennessee Tech fresh off a 10-day break. Southeast last played at Memphis on Dec Tennessee Tech leads its all-time series against Southeast Missouri State by a count of The Golden Eagles have beaten the Redhawks in 13-straight meetings dating back to TTU has won in each of its last five trips to the Show Me Center. The Redhawks have done just that in four of the last six years. Southeast won its first game of the New Year in 2004 (defeated IUPU Fort Wayne, 77-75, on Jan. 3), 2005 (defeated Lincoln, 95-68, on Jan. 1), 2006 (defeated Eastern Kentucky, 68-62, on Jan. 2) and 2007 (defeated Eastern Kentucky, 88-74, on Jan. 2). 4 The Redhawks look to end a 13-game home losing streak in Ohio Valley Conference play. Southeast lost each of its last four league games in before going 0-9 in the OVC at home a year ago. The Redhawks last conference win at the Show Me Center was a triple overtime victory over Austin Peay on Jan. 29, Southeast has already snapped four double-digit game losing streaks this season. The Redhawks snapped a 21- game losing streak with their thrilling overtime win at Northern Illinois (Nov. 22). Southeast then ended both a 26-game losing streak and 17-game road losing streak in Ohio Valley Conference play at Tennessee State (Dec. 5). Most recently, the Redhawks put a stop to a 12-game home losing streak with a win over Williams Baptist College (Dec. 12). 4 Southeast Missouri State University guard Marland Smith was named the Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Week on Dec. 28. Smith, who hails from Little Rock, Ark., registered double figures for the third time in four starts when he scored 15 points against perennial

2 national power Memphis on Dec. 22. Smith scored the Redhawks first nine points of the second half and shot 50 percent (6-of-12) from the field against the Tigers. He also finished with a game-high six rebounds, made two three-pointers, dished out two assists and knocked down a free throw in a careerhigh 32 minutes. 4 Southeast has won the Ohio Valley Conference's Freshman-of-the-Week honor three times this season. G Derek Thompson earned the award twice (Nov. 23, Dec. 7) and G Marland Smith (Dec. 28) won the award once. 4 The Redhawks go for their second-straight Ohio Valley Conference win when they square off against Tennessee Tech Saturday. The last time Southeast won back-to-back games in league play was when it beat UT Martin on the road and Morehead State at home during the season. 4 Southeast posted two wins in each of its first two months of the campaign. The Redhawks will play 18 games over the next two months, including nine in January and nine in February. In addition to its 16 remaining Ohio Valley Conference games, Southeast also has two more non-conference matchups left on this year's schedule. 4 The Redhawks lost, 87-57, at perennial national power Memphis on Dec. 22. The Tigers went on a 10-0 run in the first 2:20 of the game and never looked back. Southeast managed to pull to within 10 points early in the second half, but that was as close as the Redhawks would get. The loss was Southeast s fifth by 20 or more points this season. 4 Junior F Cameron Butler scored a gamehigh 16 points at Memphis (Dec. 22). Butler shot 4-of-11 from the field and 8-of-10 at the free throw line. He also grabbed four rebounds, had a block and gathered a game-high three steals. Butler registered double figures for the fourth time this season. 4 Southeast ended a 26-game losing streak in Ohio Valley Conference play when it won, 74-66, at Tennessee State (Dec. 5), its last time out in league play. The Redhawks never trailed against the Tigers and managed to hang on after TSU pulled to within three points on a couple of occasions late in the game. It was the longest conference losing streak in the nation and longest in league history. 4 The Redhawks opened OVC play at 1-1 after splitting two games on the road. The Redhawks, however, came up short, falling, Two days later, Southeast led by as many as 19 points before finishing off Tennessee State (Dec. 5) for its first OVC win since Jan. 29, 2008 ( triple overtime win vs. Austin Peay in Cape Girardeau). 4 With its win at Tennessee State (Dec. 5), Southeast also ended a 17-game road losing streak in OVC play. It was the Redhawks first league victory on the road since they beat Samford (70-67) on Feb. 22, In conference games alone, Southeast ranks first in the league in field goal percentage defense, three-point field goal percentage defense and rebounding offense. Opponents are shooting just 40 percent from the field and 26.3 percent from three-point range against the Redhawks through two OVC games. Southeast is also averaging 38 rebounds per game and owns a +5.0 rebounding margin against league foes. 4 Junior G Anthony Allison is averaging three 3-pointers a game against Ohio Valley Conference foes this season. Allison ties for first in the league in three-pointers made through two conference games. 4 All 14 Redhawks scored against Williams Baptist the last time Southeast played at home on Dec. 12. Three true freshmen, including Derek Thompson, Marland Smith and Lucas Nutt, scored double figures. Thompson paved the way with 23 points, while Smith and Nutt followed with 19 and 10 points, respectively. Thompson also had a 2

3 game-high six three-pointers and Nutt added 12 assists. 4 The Redhawks scored their largest margin of victory since joining the NCAA Division I ranks with a (+56) win over NAIA Williams Baptist College (Dec. 12). Southeast also tied a school record with 16 three-pointers in that game. The Redhawks knocked down 16-of-29 treys for a season-best 55.2 percent clip against the Eagles. 4 Southeast s 116 points against Williams Baptist College (Dec. 12) currently rank as the ninth-most scored in a game among NCAA Division I teams this season. Cornell scored the most points in a game this season with 142 against Davidson on Dec Southeast is 74th among 334 ranked NCAA Division I teams in three-point field goal percentage. The Redhawks are also fourth in the OVC in that category, shooting 37.9 percent (61-of-161) from behind the arc this season. 4 Freshman G Lucas Nutt became the second Southeast player to finish with a double-double this season when he had 10 points and 12 assists against Williams Baptist (Dec. 12). Nutt, who leads the OVC and ranks 35th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio (33/12, 2.8 ratio), became the first Redhawk to get a points-assists double-double since Roderick Pearson (22 points, 11 assists, at Eastern Kentucky, Jan. 2, 2007). 4 Junior G Anthony Allison or freshman G Derek Thompson finished as the Redhawks leading scorer in eight of 12 games this season. Allison is averaging a team-high 10 points per game, while Thompson follows with 9.6. Allison and Thompson rank 25th and 29th among OVC individual scorers, respectively. 4 Freshman G Marland Smith has made a three-pointer in all but two games this season. Smith ranks second on the team with 18 three-pointers made in 12 games and 11 starts. games where they had lost by double figures. 4 Three of the Redhawks four wins have come away from home this season. The Redhawks, currently 4-7 on the year, went 3-27 overall under Scott Edgar and Zac Roman a year ago. 4 Junior G Anthony Allison has scored 10 or more points a team-high seven times in 12 starts this season. He is currently the only Redhawk averaging double figures in the scoring column with 10 per game. 4 Southeast scored 59 points in the first half against Williams Baptist College (Dec. 12). As a result, it marked the Redhawks most points in a half this season. Southeast also held a (+33) lead at intermission, its largest halftime lead since holding a (+19) advantage vs. Tennessee State on Feb. 12, All four of the Redhawks wins this season have come when they've led at the half. 4 Freshman G Derek Thompson became the second Southeast player to score over 20 points in a game this season when he pitched in a career-high 23 against Williams Baptist College (Dec. 12). Thompson's 23 points are the most in a game by any Redhawk this year. Prior to that, junior G Sam Pearson scored 21 against Norfolk State (Nov. 29). 4 Southeast Missouri outscored Williams Baptist a staggering off the bench on Dec. 12. It marked the 10th time in 11 games where the Redhawks outscored their opponent in bench points. Southeast owns a advantage in bench points this year. The Redhawks also ended a streak of seven-straight home 4 Senior F LaMont Russell, who leads Southeast and ranks seventh in the OVC with 6.2 rebounds, had 10 or more boards twice this year. Russell last grabbed a 3

4 game-high 10 rebounds in 26 minutes against Southern Illinois (Dec. 9). He has finishedas the Redhawks top rebounder in four games this season. 4 True freshman G Marland Smith has scored double figures in four of his last six starts. Smith recently scored 15 points and pulled down a career-high six rebounds at Memphis (Dec. 22). 4 The Redhawks shot over 50 percent from the field in each of their last three wins. Southeast shot a season-best 55.7 percent (44-of-79) against Williams Baptist (Dec. 12). Prior to that, the Redhawks shot 50 percent at both Tennessee State (23-of-46, Dec. 5) and vs. Norfolk State (25-of-50, Nov. 29). 4 Southeast ranks second in the OVC in 3-point field goal percentage defense. Opponents are shooting just 33.3 percent (67-of-203) from behind the arc against the Redhawks through 12 games. 4 The Redhawks are averaging 76.3 points per game over their last six contests. Southeast, which has scored 71 or more points in four of its last six outings, is outscoring its foes, , in that span. Freshmen Derek Thompson (23), Marland Smith (19) and Lucas Nutt (10) led the Redhawks in that game. 4 Redhawks head coach Dickey Nutt owns a (.691) career record at home. Nutt won over 70 percent (120-51, 70.1) of his home games in 13 seasons at Arkansas State. He is currently 1-3 at home as Southeast s head coach. His first home loss of the season was against his former school, Arkansas State, on Nov Southeast played an overtime game for the second time this season when it dropped its conference-opener, 76-71, at Austin Peay (Dec. 3). The Redhawks are now 1-1 in overtime games this season. This year marks the first time since joining the NCAA Division I ranks where Southeast went overtime twice in its first eight games of a season. The Redhawks ended a 21-game losing streak with a overtime win at Northern Illinois (Nov. 22). 4 Southeast trailed, 54-45, with 4:27 left to play in regulation before going on a 15-6 run to tie the game in its OVC-opener at Austin Peay (Dec. 3). The Redhawks buried a three-pointer on three-straight possessions in the last minute to send the game to overtime. True freshman Derek Thompson drained back-to-back treys in just 16 seconds, before Lucas Nutt shook his defender to sink the biggest shot of his career to date. Nutt's threepointer tied the game with six seconds remaining. Thompson (18) and Nutt (11) accounted for 29 of the Redhawks 33 points off the bench. 4 Junior F Cameron Butler finished as Southeast s top rebounder in four games. Butler ranks fifth on the team in scoring (7.9 ppg) and second in rebounding (5.6 rpg). He also leads the Redhawks and is 11th in the OVC with 11 blocks. Butler owns one of the team s two double-doubles this season, as well. 4 With their win over Norfolk State (Nov. 29) during the final day of the Basketball Travelers Classic, the Redhawks ended a losing streak on a Sunday for the second time this season. Southeast put a halt to a three-game skid against the Spartans in Normal, Ill. Prior to that, the Redhawks ended a 21-game losing streak when they beat Northern Illinois (Nov. 22), 70-64, in DeKalb, Ill. 4 Southeast committed a season-high 32 fouls at Austin Peay (Dec. 3). As a result, the Governors attempted the most free throws of any opponent this year. APSU shot 25-of-42 at the charity stripe for just 59.5 percent. The Governors shot 13-of-24 free throws in the second half, as well. 4 4 Speaking of free throws, Southeast has attempted more than its opponent only three times this season. The Redhawks shot more free throws than Norfolk State (20-of-34 to 10-of-17), Tennessee State (22-of-27 to 15-of-22) and Southern Illinois (9-of-24 to 14-of-23). 4 Junior G Sam Pearson became the first Redhawk to score 20 or more points in a game this season when he dropped in a career-high 21 against Norfolk State (Nov. 29). Pearson scored 15 of those points in the second half alone. He also shot 58.3 percent (7-of-12) from the field, knocked down 2-of-3 three-pointers, made 5-of-8 free throws, dished out four assists and had one steal against the Spartans. One of his assists was an alley-oop pass to Cameron Butler. That play ignited a key 13-2 run after Norfolk State had pulled to within four points early in the second half. 4 Junior F Cameron Butler turned in the team s first double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds against Norfolk State (Nov. 29). Butler also threw down a monsterous dunk off an alleyoop pass from teammate Sam Pearson against the Spartans. Butler became the second Redhawk to register double-digit rebounds in a game this season. 4 Southeast recorded its largest win of the season when it beat Williams Baptist College (Dec. 12), It marked the second time the Redhawks defeated an opponent by 20 or more points this year. Southeast also took down Norfolk State, 75-54, on Nov Southeast scored 70 or more points for the sixth time this season in a victory over Williams Baptist College (Dec. 12). Southeast is currently ninth in the OVC in scoring offense (65.9 ppg), but has put up 70 or more points in four of its last six games. 4 Southeast scored a season-high 35 points off turnovers against Williams Baptist College (Dec. 12). The Redhawks boasted a advantage over the Eagles in that category. Southeast has scored 190 points off turnovers this year. The Redhawks have scored 131 of those points in the last six games alone. Southeast is forcing 16.3 turnovers a game.

5 4 The Redhawks held an opponent to 30 points or less in the first half for the fifth time this season when they limited Williams Baptist (Dec. 12) to 26. The fewest first-half points Southeast allowed this season were 17 at Tennessee State (Dec. 5). 4 The Redhawks shot a season-best 90.9 percent (10-of-11) at the free throw line at Illinois State (Nov. 28). Opponents (339) have attempted 100 more free throws than Southeast (239) in 12 games this season and boast an average of +8.4 FT attempts per game over that span. 4The Redhawks outrebounded an opponent for the fourth time with a advantage against Williams Baptist College (Dec. 12). Southeast outrebounded the Eagles, 20-7, on the offensive glass alone. The Redhawks have outrebounded their opponent five times this season. 4 Two true freshmen, including guards Derek Thompson and Marland Smith, have already cracked Southeast s starting five this season. Thompson started one game, while Smith has made seven starts. 4 Sophomore walk-on G KaJuan Watson made seven-straight free throws to start his Southeast career. Watson was 3-of-3 at Saint Louis (Nov. 14) and 4-of-4 against Arkansas State (Nov. 18). He made all of his free throws off the bench. 4 The Redhawks have used three different starting lineups this season. F Cameron Butler, F LaMont Russell, G Sam Pearson, G Anthony Allison and G Marland Smith started each of the last five games. 4 Dickey Nutt was named the 19th head coach in Southeast men s basketball history on Mar. 12, Dickey Nutt has coached in 388 games as a NCAA Division I head coach. He is overall in 13-plus seasons. Nutt needs seven wins to reach 200 career victories. 4 The Southeast men s basketball team consists of 11 newcomers and just four returnees. Senior G Johnny Hill, senior C/F Israel Kirk, junior F Jajuan Maxwell and senior F LaMont Russell are the four back from a year ago. Of the Redhawks 11 first-year players, only G Sam Pearson has experience playing at the NCAA Division I level. 4 The Redhawks have four attractive regional matchups on their non-conference schedule this season. Those four opponents include Saint Louis (L, 51-49, on Nov. 14), Arkansas State (L, 73-49, on Nov. 18), Southern Illinois (L, 86-65) and national powerhouse Memphis (Dec. 22). 4 Southeast has plenty of depth in the backcourt and on the perimeter this season. Of the 15 men on this year s roster, eight are guards. Sam Pearson, Derek Thompson, LaQuentin Miles, Lucas Nutt, Anthony Allison, KaJuan Watson, Marland Smith and Johnny Hill form that group. 4 Southeast resumes Ohio Valley Conference action at home when it hosts Jacksonville State on Jan. 4. ABOUT TENNESSEE TECH Tennessee Tech comes to Cape Girardeau on a three-game winning streak. The Golden Eagles beat Ball State (Dec. 12), Bryan College (Dec. 19) and Union College (Dec. 30) in Cookeville. TTU opened Ohio Valley Conference play with a loss at Jacksonville State on Dec. 5. The Golden Eagles are currently second-to-last in the OVC in scoring defense, giving up 77.8 points per game. Opponents are shooting nearly 50 percent (46.8) from the field against the Golden Eagles this year. Three TTU players are averaging double figures this season. Kevin Murphy leads the Golden Eagles with 14.3 points per game, while Frank Davis (13.9 ppg) and Elijah Muhammad (10.8 ppg) follow. NUTT OUT FOR SEASON WITH BROKEN FOOT Southeast Missouri State University freshman guard Lucas Nutt will miss the rest of the season due to a broken foot. A native of Jonesboro, Ark., Nutt sustained his injury during the Redhawks practice on Dec. 18. At the time of his injury, Nutt led the Ohio Valley Conference and ranked 35th in the nation in assist/turnover ratio. He averaged 4.9 points in nine games off the bench. Nutt also led the team in both assists and steals with 33 and 10, respectively. In addition, he knocked down the threepointer which sent Southeast s game to overtime at Austin Peay (Dec. 3). WELCOME TO THE HALL OF FAME Five individuals and one team were inducted into the Southeast Athletics Hall of Fame on Dec. 11. Tuba Meto (Volleyball, ), Linda Wells (Softball, Lifetime Achievement), Bud Eley (Basketball, ), Andrew Presberry (Track, ), Rich Eichhorst (Basketball, ) and the Men s Basketball team make up this year s class. The inductees and players/coaches from the Men s Basketball team were recognized during halftime of the Southeast vs. Williams Baptist game on Dec. 12. THOMPSON EARNS SECOND OVC FRESHMAN-OF-THE-WEEK HONOR G Derek Thompson was named the Ohio Valley Conference s Freshman of the Week for the second time this season on Dec. 7. Thompson averaged 12.5 points per game in two OVC matchups last week. He scored a game-high 18 points to help Southeast send its game to overtime at Austin Peay (Dec. 3). Thompson shot 6-of-13 from the field, 4-of-7 from three-point range and 2-of-2 at the free throw line in that game. Two of his threepointers came on back-to-back possessions in the last minute of regulation. Jacksonville State s Nick Murphy (Player of the Week) and Trenton Marshall (Newcomer of the Week) were the other honorees. REDHAWKS SIGN 6-FOOT-9 POWER FORWARD WAYLON JONES The Southeast Missouri State University men s basketball program signed power forward Waylon Jones to a national letter of intent for the season. Jones is out of Albany Tech Community College in Albany, Ga. A native of Rocky Mount, N.C., Jones stands at 6-foot-9 and 195 pounds. He averaged eight points, 6.5 rebounds and two blocks per game in 15 starts as a freshman. Jones served as both a sixth man and part-time starter for the Titans last year. A key player during the Titans 20-win season in , Jones is trying to let a stress fracture heal that has sidelined him until at least January. Jones graduated from Cross Keys High School two years ago before heading to Albany Tech. The Redhawks have two scholarships remaining for the season. SOUTHEAST PICKED 10TH IN OVC PRESEASON POLL Southeast Missouri State University was picked 10th in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll, the league announced Oct. 29. The Redhawks received 19 points in the overall voting by OVC head 5

6 coaches and sports information directors. Morehead State (154 pts.) and Murray State (154 pts.) were picked as co-favorites in this year s poll. Each received 10 first-place votes. Murray was voted to win the conference for the second-straight season and 13th time in the last 21 years. Austin Peay (114 pts.), Eastern Illinois (105 pts.) and Eastern Kentucky (93 pts.) were third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Jacksonville State (86 pts.), Tennessee Tech (76 pts.), UT Martin (55 pts.), Tennessee State (44) and Southeast completed the balloting. Morehead State junior F/C Kenneth Faried was named Preseason OVC Player-of-the-Year. NUTT FACES FORMER TEAM FOR FIRST TIME First-year head coach Dickey Nutt coached against his former team, Arkansas State, for the first time on Nov. 18. Nutt compiled an overall record of in 13 years ( ) at Arkansas State before taking over the Southeast helm. He also led the then-indians to two Sun Belt Conference regular-season titles (1998, 2007), one Sun Belt Tournament crown (1999) and the program s only NCAA Tournament appearance (1999). Nutt was the second-winningest coach in ASU history. 8 Dickey Nutt s expectations for his first year at Southeast Missouri State University are simple -- Win games, recruit men with outstanding character, and graduate young people. Nutt, who hails from Little Rock, Ark., was introduced as the 19th head coach in Southeast Missouri State basketball history on March 12, He comes from a thick coaching bloodline and brings a level of enthusiasm and passion for basketball which is downright contagious. First of all, I am very privileged to be the next coach at Southeast Missouri State University and I feel that sincerely every day, said Nutt. I believe we will build this program the right way with good young men who take a lot of pride in being Redhawks and want to obtain a degree from this university. Prior to taking over the Southeast helm, Nutt spent over two decades at Arkansas State University. He worked as an assistant coach from before serving as head coach from Nutt compiled an overall record of and in the Sun Belt Conference en route to becoming the second-winningest coach in ASU history and posting the second-most career victories in the Sun Belt Conference. He guided the then-indians to two Sun Belt Conference regular-season titles (1998, 2007) and one Sun Belt Tournament crown (1999). Nutt was named the Sun Belt s Coach-of-the- Year (1998) once and National Basketball Coaches Association District 9 Coach-of-the-Year (1998, 1999) twice, as well. Utilizing his dynamic and congenial personality, strong family background and rich home-grown work ethic, Nutt accomplished what no other coach in ASU history has been able to do -- take the Indians to the NCAA Tournament. Nutt did just that when he guided ASU to an record and its only NCAA Tournament berth in The Indians lost, 80-50, to Utah in the first round of the Midwest Regional (New HEAD COACH DICKEY NUTT 4Oklahoma State, 1982 FIRST YEAR Orleans, La.) that year. Nutt and his staff claimed three Sun Belt Conference titles. Nutt also saw 10 of his players earn all-conference honors and five garner all-tournament accolades in the Sun Belt. In addition, he had at least one player named Sun Belt Conference Player-of-the- Year, Defensive Player-of-the-Year and Newcomer-of-the-Year under his tutelage. However, Nutt s life isn t all about college basketball. His love for children and dedication to community service has prompted he and his wife, Cathy, to make several charitable donations over the years. One of the more notable donations they made was in 2001 to the local Jonesboro Parker Community Center gymnasium, a place where area kids can go to play basketball instead of roaming the streets. He and Cathy offered up half the funds if the city would match their donation to help finish those basketball courts. Nearly 500 kids - boys and girls - joined basketball teams at the community center when the project was complete. Nutt, who is also well-known for his contributions to schools and churches, is an avid speaker at a number of functions, including camps and clinics, to this day. Nutt began his collegiate coaching career at Oklahoma State under Leonard Hamilton (current head coach at Florida State) with then-assistants Tim Carter (current head coach at South Carolina State) and Bill Self (current head coach at Kansas). He also played four years for the Cowboys, who, at the time, were members of the Big 8 Conference. Nutt landed his first head coaching job at Arkansas State in He was the 14th men s basketball coach in ASU s 80-year basketball history. Before that, he spent eight seasons as the Indians top assistant coach. Nutt bears one of the most recognizable names in college basketball and comes from one of the nation s most respected sports families. He is the second of four sons to Houston and Emogene Nutt. Houston Sr., who passed away in the spring of 2005, was the longtime athletic director and basketball coach at the Arkansas School for the Deaf in Little Rock. Houston Sr., was often seen at athletic events supporting all four sons. Dickey s oldest brother, Houston, is currently in his second season as head football coach at Ole Miss. Houston also served as head football coach at Murray State ( ), Boise State (1997) and Arkansas ( ). Meanwhile, Danny Nutt was the Razorbacks running backs coach from and is presently Ole Miss Assistant Athletics Director for Player Development. Dennis was the head basketball coach at Texas State for six years and is now a scout for the NBA s Charlotte Bobcats. The Nutt coaching foursome was featured in an article in Sports Illustrated back in Dickey is married to the former Cathy Thompson of Oklahoma City and they have two sons, Logan and Lucas, and one daughter, Lexis.
