The Redhawks open tournament play against St. Bonaventure (2-1) Friday. Tip-off is set for 8:35 p.m., CT, at Redbird Arena on the campus of Illinois State University. 4 Southeast is on the road for a five-game stretch. The Redhawks, after losing at home against Eastern Michigan Tuesday, will have played four games in six days following this weekend s tournament. Southeast opens Ohio Valley Conference play at (Dec. 3) and (Dec. 5) after its trip to the Basketball Travelers Classic. 4 The Redhawks play in a tournament near or over the Thanksgiving holiday for the fourth-straight year. The Redhawks went 1-3 at the Las Vegas Invitational (Nov , 2008); 1-1 at the Chicago Invitational Challenge (Nov , 2007); and 1-2 at the Top of the World Classic in Alaska (Nov , 2006). 4 Friday marks the first-ever meeting between Southeast and St. Bonaventure. The Bonnies, out of the Atlantic-10 Conference, are coming off a home win over Binghamton (Nov. 20). 4 Southeast first-year head coach Dickey Nutt has never coached against either of the three opponents the Redhawks will face at this year s Basketball Travelers Classic.

2 SCOUTING ST. BONAVENTURE St. Bonaventure has the second-best record of the four teams heading to the Basketball Travelers Classic. The Bonnies, currently 2-1 on the season, go for their second-straight win against Southeast Friday night. St. Bonaventure recently beat Binghamton, 66-40, at home on Nov. 20. The Bonnies boast a +8.0 rebounding margin after outrebounding each of their three opponents this season. St. Bonaventure is holding opponents to only 25.7 rebounds a game, and as a result, leads the Atlantic-10 in rebounding defense. The Bonnies are also second in the league behind Xavier in field goal percentage, shooting 53 percent (79-of-150). F Andrew Nicholson is the team s biggest threat. Standing at 6-foot-9 with a 7-foot-4 wingspan, Nicholson averages 17.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game. His 17.3 points rank sixth in the Atlantic-10. Nicholson, also the reigning Atlantic-10 Rookie-of-the-Year, is shooting a scorching 65 percent (22-of-34) from the field and has shot below 50 percent just nine times in 33 career games. He had a game-high 28 points against St. John's and followed that up with a game-high 11 rebounds against Binghamton. He is trying to become the fastest St. Bonaventure player to reach 100 career blocks. Nicholson has 91 blocks in 33 games to date. SCOUTING ILLINOIS STATE Southeast and Illinois State hook up for the eighth time at the Basketball Travelers Classic this weekend. The Redhawks are 1-6 against the Redbirds. These teams last met on Nov. 14, 2007, with ISU winning, 90-71, in Normal, Ill. Tournament host ISU carries the best record (3-0) into this weekend s Basketball Travelers Classic. Picked to finish third in the Missouri Valley Conference in the preseason poll, the Redbirds are led by third-year head coach Tim Jankovich, who became the secondfastest coach in Illinois State history to win his 50th career game in this year s seasonopener. Preseason MVC Player-of-the-Year Osiris Eldridge and G Lloyd Phillips are the key fixtures of ISU s backcourt. Eldridge is averaging a team-high 20.7 points per game, while Phillips is pitching in The patented duo have combined to average 33.4 points per game through three games this year. SCOUTING NORFOLK STATE Norfolk State is off to a 1-2 start under third-year head coach Anthony Evans. The Spartans posted a win over Maine when they overcame a 14-point second half deficit for a thrilling victory. Norfolk State finished third in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference with a overall record and 9-7 record in league play last season. The Spartans return three starters and eight players from last year s club, led by senior guard Michael Deloach. The 6-foot guard led the MEAC in scoring last season (21.5) and set a school single-season Division I record with 666 points. Deloach was named to the MEAC All-Conference first team and National Association of Basketball Coaches All-District 15 second team. Also returning from last year s club is junior guard Aleek Pauline, who set a school record with 118 assists in New York City natives Rob Hampton (11.3 ppg) and Joe Dorsett-Jeffreys (10 ppg) are other big threats. Norfolk State has a total of seven New York natives on its roster. Southeast, which is 1-0 all-time against Norfolk State, meets the Spartans for the first time 2

3 since the Redhawks joined the NCAA Division I ranks in REDHAWKS BASKETBALL / GAMES 5-7 at BASKETBALL TRAVELERS CLASSIC 4 Southeast snapped a 21-game losing streak with its thrilling overtime win at Northern Illinois (Nov. 22). The Redhawks, who won their first game under head coach Dickey Nutt, had the nation s longest losing streak prior to that victory. Southeast also ended a streak of 24- consecutive losses on the road and won for the first time since Dec. 21, 2008 (64-63, vs. Western Illinois in Cape Girardeau). 4 Southeast goes for its second-straight win on the road when it squares off against St. Bonaventure Friday night. The Redhawks last won back-to-back games on the road under-then head coach Scott Edgar in (Dec. 18 at Samford; Dec. 20 at ). Those wins, however, were vacated due to NCAA infractions. Prior to that, Southeast won at (Feb. 5) and Eastern Illinois (Feb. 8) during the program's last winning season in (15-14, under Gary Garner). 4 The Redhawks lost to Eastern Michigan, 86-76, Tuesday night in Cape Girardeau. EMU used a 16-6 run in the last six minutes of the game to pull off the comefrom-behind win. The Eagles overcame an 11-point deficit with the help of F Brandon Bowdry (25) and C Justin Dobbins (15), who combined for 40 of the team's points. EMU was the second Mid-American opponent Southeast faced this season. 4 True freshman Derek Thompson has provided Southeast with instant offense off the bench this season. A native of Detroit, Mich., Thompson is the Redhawks leading scorer with 13.3 points per game. He averaged 17 points off the bench in his last two games and scored a game-high 19 at Northern Illinois (Nov. 22). Thompson scored double figures in three of four games this year. The only time he hasn t scored double figures was during a game where he didn t come off the bench (vs. Arkansas State on Nov. 18). Thompson is currently 11th in the Ohio Valley Conference in scoring. 4 The Redhawks shot a season-best 61 percent (32-of-65) in the first half against Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24). Sam Pearson (17), Derek Thompson (15), LaMont Russell (10) and Marland Smith (10) scored double figures, marking the first time Southeast had four double-digit scorers in a game since Feb. 26, 2009 (87-82 loss at ). 4 Junior G Anthony Allison scored double figures in each of his first three starts at Southeast. Allison, a transfer out of Missouri State-West Plains CC, is the team s second-leading scorer with 9.5 points per game. He did not score 10 or more points for the first time this season when he had seven points against Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24). Allison played 17 minutes and later fouled out of that game. 4 Junior G Sam Pearson posted a gamehigh 17 points against Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24). Pearson shot 7-of-14 from the field and 3-of-4 from the free throw line to lead four Redhawks in double figures. Pearson is the only first-year player with NCAA Division I experience among the 11 newcomers on this year s team. 4 Southeast has committed 112 fouls in its first four games this season. The Redhawks are averaging 28 fouls per game. The Redhawks 112 fouls are second-most in the OVC behind (136 fouls in six games). 4 Senior F LaMont Russell led the Redhawks in rebounding for the secondstraight time when he grabbed eight boards against Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24). Russell, who also scored 10 points against the Eagles, nearly matched a career-high when he had 16 rebounds two days before that game at Northern Illinois (Nov. 22). Ten of his rebounds came in the second half alone against the Huskies. Russell is the Redhawks top rebounder with 7.8 per game. He leads the OVC in field goal percentage (80 percent, 12-of-15) and is third in rebounding through four games and three starts this season. 4 Southeast shot 47.8 percent (11-of-23) from the field and a red-hot 62.5 percent (5-of-8) from three-point range en route to a halftime lead against Northern Illinois (Nov. 22). It marked the first time the Redhawks held a halftime lead in eight-consecutive games. Nutt won over 70 percent (120-51, 70.1) of his home games in 13 seasons at Arkansas State. He is currently 0-2 at home as Southeast s head coach. His first home loss of the season was against his former school, Arkansas State, on Nov True freshman G Derek Thompson leads the Redhawks in scoring with 13.3 ppg through four games this year. Derek Winans stands as the last freshman to rank as Southeast s top scorer during a season. Winans averaged 14.9 points per game en route to earning OVC Freshman-of-the-Year honors as a redshirt-freshman in Southeast ranks 10th in the OVC in scoring offense, averaging just 59 points per game. The Redhawks 76 points against Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24) marked a season-high. Southeast has scored 70 or more points in two-straight games. In addition, the Redhawks rank third in the league in 3-point field goal percentage defense. Opponents are shooting 35.1 percent (20-of-57) from 3-point range against Southeast this year. 4 Junior F Cameron Butler posted doubledigit points for the first time in his Southeast career when he poured in 12 at Northern Illinois (Nov. 22). Butler, who is in his first year playing at the NCAA Division I level, scored half of his points at the free throw line. He made 6-of-8 free throws, including five-straight in the last 35 seconds of the game to seal the Redhawks win over the Huskies. Butler is averaging 5.8 points and 4.8 rebounds this season. 4 The Redhawks outrebounded an opponent for the first time in seven-consecutive games at Northern Illinois (Nov. 22). Southeast held a advantage on the glass in that game. The last time the Redhawks outrebounded an opponent was at (33-31) on Feb. 12, Two true freshmen, including guards Derek Thompson and Marland Smith, have already cracked Southeast s starting five this season. Thompson started one game, while Smith has made two starts. Smith recently scored double figures for the first time at the college level with 10 points against Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24) 4 Sophomore walk-on G KaJuan Watson made seven-straight free throws to start his Southeast career. Watson was 3-of-3 at Saint Louis (Nov. 14) and 4-of-4 against Arkansas State (Nov. 18). He made all of his free throws off the bench. Watson is currently tied for first in the OVC in free throw percentage. 4 The Redhawks have used a different starting lineup in each of their three games this season. Most recently, F Cameron Butler, F LaMont Russell, G Sam Pearson, G Anthony Allison and G Marland Smith started in Southeast s first win of the season at Northern Illinois (Nov. 22). 4 Dickey Nutt was named the 19th head coach in Southeast men s basketball history on Mar. 12, Dickey Nutt has coached in 380 games as a NCAA Division I head coach. He is overall in 13-plus seasons. Nutt needs 10 wins to reach 200 career victories. 4 Southeast s reserves have outscored its opponent s bench in all four games this season. The Redhawks own a advantage in bench points this year. Southeast scored a combined 55 points off the bench in its last two games (27 at Northern Illinois, 28 vs. Eastern Michigan). 4 The Southeast men s basketball team consists of 11 newcomers and just four returnees. Senior G Johnny Hill, senior C/F Israel Kirk, junior F Jajuan Maxwell and senior F LaMont Russell are the four back from a year ago. Of the Redhawks 11 first-year players, only G Sam Pearson has experience playing at the NCAA Division I level. 4 The Redhawks have four attractive regional matchups on their non-conference schedule this season. Those four opponents include Saint Louis (L, 51-49, on Nov. 14), Arkansas State (L, 73-49, on Nov. 18), Southern Illinois (Dec. 9) and national powerhouse Memphis (Dec. 22). 4 Southeast has plenty of depth in the backcourt and on the perimeter this season. Of the 15 men on this year s roster, eight are guards. Sam Pearson, Derek Thompson, LaQuentin Miles, Lucas Nutt, Anthony Allison, KaJuan Watson, Marland Smith and Johnny Hill form that group. 4 Senior G Johnny Hill is the only player on this year s team who has played against at least one team in this year s Basketball Travelers Classic. Hill had one rebound, one assist and a steal against Illinois State in G Lucas Nutt, son of head coach Dickey Nutt, saw action in his first game of the season at Northern Illinois (Nov. 22). He had a season-high seven points off the bench against Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24). 4 Southeast is looking to snap an 11-game losing streak at home. The last time the Redhawks won at the Show Me Center was on Dec. 21, 2008 (64-63, vs. Western Illinois). 4 This weekend s games are Southeast s last before Ohio Valley Conference play. The Redhawks take to the road to open league play at (Dec. 3) and (Dec. 5). THOMPSON NAMED OVC FRESHMAN-OF-THE-WEEK G Derek Thompson was named the Ohio Valley Conference s Freshman-of-the-Week on Nov. 23. A native of Detroit, Mich., Thompson scored a gamehigh 19 points to help the Redhawks end a 21-game losing streak with a thrilling overtime win at Northern Illinois. Thompson, who played 41 of the game s 45 minutes, came off the bench to hit 6-of-12 (50 percent) from the field and 4-of-7 (57.1 percent) from 3-point range after entering the game 0-of-10 from beyond the arc. He made a 3-pointer in the first minute of the extra period and the Redhawks never lost the lead the rest of the way. Thompson averaged 14 points and 1.5 rebounds per game on the week. Thompson becomes just the fifth Southeast men s basketball player to win OVC Freshman-of-the-Week honors. Guard Roderick Pearson was the last to win the award on Jan. 8, Morehead State F/C Kenneth Faried (Player-of-the- Week) and G/F Trenton Marshall (Newcomer-of-the-Week) joined Thompson as this week s honorees. 4

5 REDHAWKS SIGN 6-FOOT-9 POWER FORWARD WAYLON JONES The State University men s basketball program signed power forward Waylon Jones to a national letter of intent for the season. Jones is out of Albany Tech Community College in Albany, Ga. A native of Rocky Mount, N.C., Jones stands at 6-foot-9 and 195 pounds. He averaged eight points, 6.5 rebounds and two blocks per game in 15 starts as a freshman. Jones served as both a sixth man and part-time starter for the Titans last year. A key player during the Titans 20-win season in , Jones is trying to let a stress fracture heal that has sidelined him until at least January. Jones graduated from Cross Keys High School two years ago before heading to Albany Tech. The Redhawks have two scholarships remaining for the season. SOUTHEAST PICKED 10TH IN OVC PRESEASON POLL State University was picked 10th in the Ohio Valley Conference Preseason Poll, the league announced Oct. 29. The Redhawks received 19 points in the overall voting by OVC head coaches and sports information directors. (154 pts.) and (154 pts.) were picked as co-favorites in this year s poll. Each received 10 first-place votes. Murray was voted to win the conference for the second-straight season and 13th time in the last 21 years. (114 pts.), (105 pts.) and Eastern Kentucky (93 pts.) were third, fourth and fifth, respectively. (86 pts.), Tennessee Tech (76 pts.), (55 pts.), (44) and Southeast completed the balloting. junior F/C Kenneth Faried was named Preseason OVC Player-of-the-Year. NUTT FACES FORMER TEAM FOR FIRST TIME First-year head coach Dickey Nutt coached against his former team, Arkansas State, for the first time on Nov. 18. Nutt compiled an overall record of in 13 years ( ) at Arkansas State before taking over the Southeast helm. He also led the then-indians to two Sun Belt Conference regular-season titles (1998, 2007), one Sun Belt Tournament crown (1999) and the program s only NCAA Tournament appearance (1999). Nutt was the secondwinningest coach in ASU history. INJURY REPORT F Eric McCrary returned against Eastern Michigan (Nov. 24) after missing two games due to the flu. McCrary played just two minutes. OVC TELECONFERENCES Teleconferences are once again bi-weekly for Ohio Valley Conference men and women s coaches this year and will be held on Tuesdays. 7 Dickey Nutt s expectations for his first year at Southeast Missouri State University are simple -- Win games, recruit men with outstanding character, and graduate young people. Nutt, who hails from Little Rock, Ark., was introduced as the 19th head coach in State basketball history on March 12, He comes from a thick coaching bloodline and brings a level of enthusiasm and passion for basketball which is downright contagious. First of all, I am very privileged to be the next coach at Southeast Missouri State University and I feel that sincerely every day, said Nutt. I believe we will build this program the right way with good young men who take a lot of pride in being Redhawks and want to obtain a degree from this university. Prior to taking over the Southeast helm, Nutt spent over two decades at Arkansas State University. He worked as an assistant coach from before serving as head coach from Nutt compiled an overall record of and in the Sun Belt Conference en route to becoming the second-winningest coach in ASU history and posting the second-most career victories in the Sun Belt Conference. He guided the then-indians to two Sun Belt Conference regular-season titles (1998, 2007) and one Sun Belt Tournament crown (1999). Nutt was named the Sun Belt s Coach-of-the- Year (1998) once and National Basketball Coaches Association District 9 Coach-of-the-Year (1998, 1999) twice, as well. Utilizing his dynamic and congenial personality, strong family background and rich home-grown work ethic, Nutt accomplished what no other coach in ASU history has been able to do -- take the Indians to the NCAA Tournament. Nutt did just that when he guided ASU to an record and its only NCAA Tournament berth in The Indians lost, 80-50, to Utah in the first round of the Midwest Regional (New HEAD COACH DICKEY NUTT 4Oklahoma State, 1982 FIRST YEAR Orleans, La.) that year. Nutt and his staff claimed three Sun Belt Conference titles. Nutt also saw 10 of his players earn all-conference honors and five garner all-tournament accolades in the Sun Belt. In addition, he had at least one player named Sun Belt Conference Player-of-the- Year, Defensive Player-of-the-Year and Newcomer-of-the-Year under his tutelage. However, Nutt s life isn t all about college basketball. His love for children and dedication to community service has prompted he and his wife, Cathy, to make several charitable donations over the years. One of the more notable donations they made was in 2001 to the local Jonesboro Parker Community Center gymnasium, a place where area kids can go to play basketball instead of roaming the streets. He and Cathy offered up half the funds if the city would match their donation to help finish those basketball courts. Nearly 500 kids - boys and girls - joined basketball teams at the community center when the project was complete. Nutt, who is also well-known for his contributions to schools and churches, is an avid speaker at a number of functions, including camps and clinics, to this day. Nutt began his collegiate coaching career at Oklahoma State under Leonard Hamilton (current head coach at Florida State) with then-assistants Tim Carter (current head coach at South Carolina State) and Bill Self (current head coach at Kansas). He also played four years for the Cowboys, who, at the time, were members of the Big 8 Conference. Nutt landed his first head coaching job at Arkansas State in He was the 14th men s basketball coach in ASU s 80-year basketball history. Before that, he spent eight seasons as the Indians top assistant coach. Nutt bears one of the most recognizable names in college basketball and comes from one of the nation s most respected sports families. He is the second of four sons to Houston and Emogene Nutt. Houston Sr., who passed away in the spring of 2005, was the longtime athletic director and basketball coach at the Arkansas School for the Deaf in Little Rock. Houston Sr., was often seen at athletic events supporting all four sons. Dickey s oldest brother, Houston, is currently in his second season as head football coach at Ole Miss. Houston also served as head football coach at Murray State ( ), Boise State (1997) and Arkansas ( ). Meanwhile, Danny Nutt was the Razorbacks running backs coach from and is presently Ole Miss Assistant Athletics Director for Player Development. Dennis was the head basketball coach at Texas State for six years and is now a scout for the NBA s Charlotte Bobcats. The Nutt coaching foursome was featured in an article in Sports Illustrated back in Dickey is married to the former Cathy Thompson of Oklahoma City and they have two sons, Logan and Lucas, and one daughter, Lexis.
