On the night, Purdue shot 5 percent and went 9-of-2 from the foul line, including 9-of-9 from Carsen Edwards. One bright spot for the Huskers in the loss was the performance of sophomore guard Thomas Allen, who matched his career high with 8 points against the Boilermakers, including 5-of-6 from 3-point range. Allen, who started for most of the year before moving to the bench, has played well since Isaac Copeland s injury, averaging.5 ppg on 47 percent shooting over the last four contests, including three double-figure performances. The Huskers will look to avenge an loss to the Golden Gophers from back in December. Minnesota (6-8, 6-7 Big Ten) has dropped three straight, including a loss at Michigan State on Saturday. In that game, Michigan State forced 6 turnovers and held the Golden Gophers to 37 percent shooting. Freshmen Gabe Kalscheur and Daniel Oturo were the only UM players in double figures, finishing with 7 and 2 points respectively. 4 Thomas Allen (right) became the fourth Husker this year to have at least five 3-pointers in a game this season, joining James Palmer Jr., Glynn Watson Jr. and Nana Akenten. MINNESOTA Nebraska led by double-digits with minutes left, but the Huskers could not hold the lead down the stretch in an loss to the Golden Gophers at Williams Arena on Dec. 5. Nebraska led for much of the game and was on top midway through the second half. But the Husker offense went cold from there and Minnesota s offense caught fire, as the Gophers outscored Nebraska 29- over the game s final minutes. During that stretch, Nebraska was just 3-of-2 from the field, while Minnesota was 9-of-6. Minnesota won by shooting 5.8 percent from the field including 57. percent in the second half. Amir Coffey paced the Gopher offense with a career-high 32 points, including 8 in the second half while Jordan Murphy had a double-double with 8 points and 3 rebounds. 5 LAST TIME OUT Despite Thomas Allen tying a career-high with 8 points, the Huskers fell 8-62 to No. 5 Purdue on Saturday night at Mackey Arena. Allen also set a new single-game high with five 3-pointers for the Huskers (3-, 3- Big Ten) as he joined James Palmer Jr. (7 points) and Isaiah Roby ( points) in double figures. Allen s hot shooting night was not enough, however, as Purdue shot 5.9 percent (27-53) from the field and 4 percent (8-2) from 3-point range on the way to their eighth straight victory. Isaiah Roby tied the game with a dunk just 9 seconds into the second half, but NU would score just one more basket in the next 5:36 as Purdue went on a 4-2 run to open up a with 4:5 to play. Needing a spark, Coach Miles brought Thomas Allen in off the bench and he immediately knocked down 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions, cutting the Purdue lead to eight. NU would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way as the Boilermakers rode a steady performance from Carsen Edwards, who scored 8 of his 27 points in the second half. Purdue had four players hit double figures in scoring and senior forward Grady Eifert scored a career-high 6 points. HALFTIME TO UNL'S 5 BIRTHDAY As part of the University of Nebraska's weeklong celebration of its 5th birthday, Wednesday's halftime will feature a tribute to the University's first 5 years as well as well as a performance by Nebraska Steel the university s first student ensemble dedicated to playing steel drum music. HUSKERS LOOK TO CONTINUE HOME SUCCESS VS. GOPHERS Since Nebraska joined the Big Ten prior to the 2-2 season, the home team has enjoyed the upper hand in the series with the Gophers. In the 2 meetings since Nebraska has joined the Big Ten, the home team has won times, including of the last meetings dating to March of 22. PALMER ECLIPSES, POINTS AT NEBRASKA James Palmer Jr. joined an exclusive club at Nebraska on Feb. 6, as he became the Huskers' 3th,-point scorer. The 6-foot-6 senior guard has averaged 7.9 points per game in his two seasons and has been in double figures in 54 of his 57 career games since arriving on campus two seasons ago. Nebraska's 3,-point scorers hail from 5 states, as well as Australia and New Zealand. Palmer is the Huskers' first,-point scorer from Maryland. Palmer reached the,-point mark in 56 career games, the second-fastest player to reach that milestone. Allen spearheaded the efforts, using traditional and social media to get the word out on the event, which took place on Aug. 4. In all, more than five vans of materials were donated that day with other Husker teams and university staffers making contributions for the event. Allen, Nana Akenten and Isaiah Roby also coordinated a coat drive for the school in conjunction with the Nebrasketball Buddies Clinic in December. Jim Molinari worked at Minnesota for three seasons (24-5 to 26-7), serving as the interim head coach for part of the 26-7 campaign. With his four free throws at Purdue, Palmer moved into a tie for seventh on NU's single-season chart with 4 (with Bob Gratropp, 969). Palmer is now six free throws away from sixth (Aleks Maric, 47). Glynn Watson Jr. is one of six players currently on NU's top- list in both assists and steals, joining Brian Carr (984-87), Cookie Belcher (997-2), Tyronn Lue (996-98), Erick Strickland (993-96) and Clifford Scales (998-9). Watson is currently in th place on NU's assist list (348) and will break a tie with Ryan Anderson (66) for fifth place on NU's steals list with his next steal. Former walk-on Tanner Borchardt has stepped into a crucial role for the Huskers following Isaac Copeland's injury. Borchardt is averaging 8.6 rebounds per game over the Huskers' last five contests and is averaging 26.6 minutes per game. Prior to Copeland's injury, Borchardt averaged just 2.9 rebounds per game in 2.3 minutes per contest. Balance has been key for the Husker attack this season. When NU has at least three double-figure scorers, the Huskers are 2-7, but just -4 when less than three NU players are in double figures. Nebraska ranks ninth nationally in average attendance at 5,65 per game as of Feb. 6. Of the eight schools ahead of the Huskers, all eight play in facilities of at least 6,3 seats. NU's attendance is 4 percent of PBA's 5,-seat capacity. HUSKERS LIMIT TURNOVERS Nebraska has done an exceptional job of limiting turnovers this season. The Huskers are on pace to shatter the school record for fewest turnovers per game. Nebraska is seventh nationally in that category with an average of per game. Nebraska has committed or fewer turnovers in each of the last four games, including a season low of five against No. 24 Maryland on Feb. 6. Four of the five lowest turnover per game totals have come in Tim Miles' seven seasons at Nebraska. Three of the top seven teams in terms of turnovers per game are in the Big Ten, as NU is joined by Michigan (first) and Wisconsin (third). FIVE NAMED TO ATHLETIC DEPARTMENT HONOR ROLL Five members of the Husker basketball team were honored last Thursday, as they were named to the NU Athletic Honor Roll for the fall semester. The group included seniors Tanner Borchardt, Isaac Copeland Jr. and Johnny Trueblood, as well as sophomore Thorir Thorbjarnarson and redshirt freshman Justin Costello. It is the sixth time that Borchardt has garnered the honor, while Trueblood (fourth), Copeland (second), Thorbjarnarson (second) and Costello (second) are all multiple-time reciepients. To qualify for the honor roll, student-athletes must have a 3. GPA for the previous semester. TANNER TALLIES REBOUNDS Senior Tanner Borchardt put together the finest effort of his career against Illinois. The former walk-on from Gothenberg, Neb., posted personal bests in points (2), rebounds (8) and minutes (32) in just the third start of his career. Borchardt's 8-rebound effort was not only a career high, but matched the highest total by any Husker in more than a decade. Borchardt's 8 rebounds tied for the fifth-best rebound day in the last 25 years of Husker basketball, and was the most since Aleks Maric snared 9 rebounds against Missouri on Feb. 24, 27. His 8-rebound effort tied for the third-highest total by a Big Ten player this season. Only Jordan Murphy, who had 2 rebounds against Penn State on Jan. 9, and Bruno Fernando, who had 9 against the Huskers on Wednesday, have grabbed more rebounds in a Big Ten game than Borchardt this season. Borchardt's offensive rebounds marked only the fourth time in the last nine seasons that a Big Ten player totaled at least offensive rebounds in a game. Borchardt joins Jared Sullinger ( vs. Northwestern), Gabriel Olaseni (-24-5 vs. Purdue) and Dererk Pardon (-2-8 vs. Nebraska) as the only Big Ten players to accomplish the feat. NU has scored at least 7 points 4 times, including seven games of at least 8 points. Nebraska is 48th nationally in offensive efficiency according to KenPom through Feb. 6. 7 The Huskers scored 6 points against Mississippi Valley State, the Huskers' highest total since the 25-6 campaign. Nebraska opened the season with four straight games scoring at least 8 points, marking the first time NU has accomplished that since the 996 NIT. Nebraska scored 94 points in the win over Creighton, its third-highest total in 52 meetings in the series. The solid offensive effort is not surprising based on what the Huskers brought back from last year's team that went 22-, as Nebraska brought back its top four scorers for the first time in 5 years, including three players who averaged double figures. Nebraska returned three double-figure scorers (James Palmer Jr., 7.2, Isaac Copeland Jr., 2.9 and Glynn Watson Jr.,.5) for the first time since the season (Eric Piatkowski, 4.3; Derrick Chandler, 2.3; Jamar Johnson,.2). Nebraska returned 73 percent of its scoring and 72 percent of its assists from last season. It marked the third time in the last 5 seasons that Nebraska returns at least 7 percent of its scoring from the previous year. DOING IT WITH DEFENSE For Nebraska, the biggest thing over the last two seasons has been improvements on the defensive end. Last season, NU went from 3th to sixth in the Big Ten in field goal percentage defense and from 4th to second in 3-point percentage defense. That has continued during the 28-9 season as he enter the final month of regular-season play. NU ranks in the top-4 nationally in scoring defense (63.5 ppg, 8th), field goal defense (.4, 24th) and 3-point defense (.36, 36th) as of Feb.. The Huskers are also third in the Big Ten in steals (7.5 spg). Nebraska's opponents are shooting.4 from the field, which ranks among the best numbers since the 3-point line was established in Only the 2- defense held opponents to a lower field goal percentage. Only two opponents have shot over 5 percent against Nebraska in the last 49 games dating back to last season. In 28-9, NU has held 22 of its 24 opponents under 5 percent shooting, as only Minnesota (Dec. 5) and Purdue (Feb. 6) have shot over 5 percent. NU has limited opponents to under.85 points per possession. Mississippi Valley State and Southeastern Louisiana were held to.47 points per possession, the lowest number in Tim Miles' seven years at NU. On the season, the Huskers are 35th in Kenpom's adjusted defense through Feb. 9. The Huskers have held six opponents to their lowest offensive total of the season. In the loss to No. 6 Michigan State on Jan. 7, the Huskers held the Spartans to their second-lowest point total (7) and field goal percentage (.436) of the season at the time. Under Miles, the Huskers are 5-5 (.99) when holding opponents under 6 points, including 6- the past three seasons. Under Miles, the Huskers are 58-8 (.763) when holding opponents under 4 percent shooting, including 2-4 (.84) the past three seasons.
