The game will tip off at 7:05 p.m. and will be the final contest before NU opens league action at home against Missouri on Jan. 10 on ESPN2. HUSKERS OPEN NEW YEAR WITH MATCHUP AGAINST HAWKS The Nebraska basketball team hits the New Year running as it plays the first of two games in three days on Saturday, Jan. 3, when the Cornhuskers play host to Maryland Eastern Shore. The Huskers and Hawks will tip off at 2:05 p.m. at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. There is no television coverage for the contest, however, all of Nebraska s games can be heard on the IMG Husker Sports Radio Network, consisting of 31 stations around the state. Every game can also be heard for free around the world on the Internet at Huskers.com, the official Web site of Nebraska Athletics. Veteran play-by-play man Kent Pavelka will call the action alongside former Husker Andy Markowski, who will provide color commentary. Nebraska is looking to make it two straight wins and improve to 9-3 on the season when it faces the Hawks. The Huskers put together one of their best offensive performances of the season in their last outing, a victory over South Carolina State on Tuesday. The Huskers 77 points were the second-highest total they have produced this season. Nebraska got to the line a season-high 35 times while tying for its second-lowest turnover total (11) of the season. Four players scored in double figures, also tying the team high. Senior guard Ade Dagunduro continued his strong play, posting 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting. Dagunduro, who has averaged 14.8 points per game over his past four contests, hit his first three shots from the floor and set the Nebraska record for consecutive made field goals. He hit 15 straight attempts over three games, including tying NU s single-game mark by going 9-for-9 from the floor against UMBC. Dagunduro was not the only hot shooter as junior guard Sek Henry finished with a team-high 18 points, just one point off his season high and two off his career best. Henry hit 5-of-9 attempts from the field and got to the free throw line a career-high nine times, hitting a career-best seven. He also picked up five boards, helping Nebraska to 35 rebounds, its second-highest total this season. The Huskers rebounding effort against SCSU was bolstered by the presence of junior forward Chris Balham, who grabbed seven boards with seven points after entering the game with just five rebounds and six points in his first seven games played. The Huskers are looking to become the first NU squad since to hold each of its first 12 opponents under 67 points. The squad opened the season holding its first 18 opponents under 67 points. 2 2 HUSKERS.COM SCOUTING THE HAWKS Maryland Eastern Shore comes into the weekend matchup at Nebraska with a 1-7 record after dropping its last two games by double figures. The Hawks lone win came against NJIT, which went winless last season. The only other game the Hawks have been within double figures was a setback against Delaware State. In their last contest, the Hawks fell to Old Dominion by a mark on Dec. 22, meaning UMES will be playing its first game in 13 days. In that game, Neal Pitt posted a game-high 19 points while Keishawn Mayes added a solid 14 points with 14 rebounds. UMES pulled within six with just over a minute remaining before Old Dominion hung on at the free throw line. Mayes performance also included four steals, two blocks and two assists in 35 minutes. For his strong defensive performance, including posting his first career double-double, Mayes was named the MEAC Defensive Player of the Week. On the season, Mayes is averaging 11.4 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while also ranking third on the squad with 1.5 assists per game. Only Pitt posts better averages than Mayes, as Pitt is putting in 15.9 points and 7.9 rebounds per contest. Pitt and Mayes are the only two doublefigure scorers on the squad, as the Hawks third-leading scorer is Chris Conner, who has averaged just 6.0 points per game this season. As a team, Maryland Eastern Shore is averaging only 50.4 points per game while hitting just 32.9 percent from the floor, including 25.0 percent from 3-point range. The Hawks have turned the ball over 121 times (15.8 turnovers per game) while posting just 65 assists on 139 baskets. The Hawks are staying competitive by hitting the glass hard. UMES is averaging 37.8 rebounds per game, and hold a +1.7 rebounding average on the year. While the Hawks have struggled to score, they have been solid defensively, holding teams to just 62.9 points per game. UMES is allowing teams to hit just 40.8 percent from the field and 33.5 percent from long range. Maryland Eastern Shore is guided by coach Frankie Allen (Roanoke College, 1971), who is in his first year leading the Hawks. Allen is in his 20th season as a head coach, including four seasons as head coach at Virginia Tech, Tennessee State and Howard. Overall, he owns a career record and has led his teams to two NCAA Tournament appearances and four conference titles. No other league squad is holding opponents below 60.0 points per contest. Nebraska ranked fourth nationally in scoring defense as of Dec. 21, trailing only Washington State (48.0 ppg), Northwestern (52.6) and Ohio State (52.9). Nebraska ranked eighth nationally in turnover margin on Dec. 21. To date, the Huskers have caused 211 turnovers (19.2 turnovers per game) while posting 138 (12.5 tpg) miscues itself over 11 games, a margin of +6.7, which ranks second in the Big 12 Conference. Nebraska has struggled at times scoring this season as NU has averaged 65.5 points per game. The Huskers have topped 70 points just four times in 11 games, although they have not allowed a team to score above 66 points in a contest this year. Ade Dagunduro had the best game of his career against UMBC as he posted a careerbest 19 points with three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals in 27 minutes. He tied the school and Big 12 Conference single-game record by hitting all nine field-goal attempts against the Retrievers. Dagunduro had three straight made field goals to end the IPFW contest, connected on nine consecutive against UMBC and then knocked in his first three shots against South Carolina State to set the school record for consecutive made field goals at 15. Dagunduro surpassed Mikki Moore for the mark, as Moore had 13 straight made shots over three games in the 1997 NIT. Paul Velander scored a season-high 14 points with four 3-pointers against UMBC. It was just his second double-figure scoring game this season, although he is third on the team with 9.5 points per game. The Huskers had just six turnovers in the game against Saint Louis. It tied the lowest total by Nebraska under coach Doc Sadler. Nebraska posted 11 turnovers at Oregon State, marking the eighth time under coach Doc Sadler that NU had 11 or fewer turnovers in a road game. The Huskers also had 11 turnovers against Alabama State and South Carolina State, tying for the second-lowest total of the season. Nebraska outrebounded Alabama State 35-28, and has gained an advantage on the glass in three games this season. NU has trailed on the boards in each of the past five games by an average of 9.8 rebounds per game ( ). The +7 rebounding margin against Alabama State was a season high. The -15 (40-25) rebound margin at Oregon State was a Husker season low. Nebraska opened a season with a 6-0 mark for only the second time in the Big 12 era (also ). His 49.2 percentage (31-of-63) leads the Big 12 Conference. Velander has played the second-most minutes of any Husker so far as he has seen 283 minutes of action in 11 games. He had 777 minutes in 60 career games entering the season. Cookie Miller leads the team with 42 assists against 19 turnovers this season. He is looking to become the first Husker to lead NU in assists as a freshman and sophomore since Tyronn Lue did it in and Miller helped the team post a season-best 23 assists on 30 baskets against Alabama State. Miller had six assists with two turnovers while Ryan Anderson led the team with a career-best seven assists without a turnover. Four Huskers had at least three assists apiece against the Hornets. DAGUNDURO GETTING ON TRACK After a sluggish start to the season, senior guard Ade Dagunduro has begun to turn up the intensity on both ends of the court. One of the most athletic players in the Big 12 Conference, Dagunduro has recently brought his scoring average up to rank second on the squad with 9.8 points per game. Possibly Dagunduro s biggest points of the young season came in the final seconds of a comeback victory over Creighton. The Inglewood, Calif., native got free on the right block when his defender hedged to the middle of the lane as Steve Harley drove with the ball. Harley made a nice wrap-around pass right to Dagunduro, whose uncontested layup with 2.7 seconds remaining was the game-winning bucket. Dagunduro started the season averaging just 4.8 points per game in three contests against San Jose State, TCU and Arkansas-Pine Bluff. After posting 11 combined points against Alabama State and Arizona State, Dagunduro averaged 14.8 ppg over the past four games. Dagunduro has set a career high by scoring in double figures in each of the past four games. Last year, he scored in double figures in three straight games once. In the last four games, Dagunduro has averaged 3.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 1.8 steals and 0.5 blocks per game. Earlier in the season, Dagunduro posted 14 points against Saint Louis and 11 points vs. Creighton in consecutive games. He hit 9-of- 16 shots (56.2 percent) from the field in those contests after starting the season shooting 4- for-15 (26.7 percent) from the floor in the first three games. Dagunduro s slow start this season is the exact opposite of last year, which could be a good thing for the Huskers in the long run. Dagunduro started on fire, averaging 11.8 points per game in non-conference play while hitting 54.8 percent from the field. In league action, he had 5.8 points per game while knocking down just 40.4 percent from the field. RECORD PERFORMANCE Senior guard Ade Dagunduro had what the Huskers hope to be a breakout game against UMBC as he posted a career-high 19 points in 27 minutes of action. He topped his previous career best of 17 points last year in an overtime road loss to Western Kentucky. Dagunduro scored 15 of his 19 points against UMBC in the second half and added three rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals for an impressive all-around performance. But the most impressive aspect of Dagunduro s line on the stat sheet was the field-goal column. He finished the game hitting 9-of-9 attempts from the field, helping Nebraska hit 48.9 percent from the floor. Dagunduro tied the school and Big 12 Conference single-game record by hitting all nine of his attempts from the field against UMBC. Dagunduro became the fifth Husker in history and third player in the Big 12 era to connect on nine consecutive shots from the floor in a single game. It was the fourth time the feat happened by a Husker against a nonconference opponent. He shot better than 78 percent from the charity stripe in that stretch. This year he is picking up where he left off as he tries to guide the Huskers to their second straight postseason berth. Harley is currently leading the team with 13.5 points per game, an average that ranks just outside the top 20 in the Big 12 Conference. Harley set a career high with 21 points on 9- of-15 shooting against IPFW. It was his second career 20-point performance and the Huskers' only 20-point game this year. He has hit 45.3 percent from the floor, and has been one of the most aggressive Huskers getting to the basket, as he leads the team with 45 trips to the free throw line (31 made free throws, 17th in league in free throw percentage at 71.1). Harley is also averaging 3.5 rebounds, 2.2 assists and 1.2 steals per game. After opening the season hitting just 4-of- 13 shots over the first two games, Harley has since knocked down 49-of-104 (47.1 percent) in the past nine games. Harley set a career high against Creighton with 16 field-goal attempts, making eight (one off career high). Harley has tied his career high for rebounds twice this season, posting six against San Jose State in the season opener and again in the come-from-behind win over Creighton. Harley had just one assist against Creighton, but it was the biggest one of the game. With the contest tied at 52-52, Nebraska had the ball with the shot clock off. Coach Doc Sadler drew up a play for Harley as the first scoring option. As he drove the lane to the basket, CU hedged to the middle and Harley made a nice wrap-around pass to Ade Dagunduro, who had an uncontested layup for the game-winning basket with 2.7 seconds remaining. Harley is the only Husker averaging more than 26 minutes per game, as he has played 31.1 minutes per contest, including a careerhigh 40 minutes against UMBC. HOT HENRY After a strong offseason, Sek Henry entered his junior season on a tear while helping the Huskers to six straight wins to open a season for just the second time in the Big 12 era. Through 11 games, Henry is one of four players averaging at least 9.0 points per game, as he has posted 9.3 points per contest. Henry posted 19 points against Saint Louis, one off his career high and the most points he has scored at home in the Devaney Center. He nearly matched the mark with 18 points against South Carolina State, the sixth game this season he scored in double figures. Henry scored in double figures just five times last year and four times as a freshman. Henry scored 46 points (11.5 ppg) to open the first four games of the season, the secondbest, four-game scoring stretch of his career. As a freshman, he posted 56 points (14 ppg) over four games to end the non-conference schedule. Henry has hit 34-of-60 shots (56.7 percent) from the field, including 11-of-24 (45.8 percent) from 3-point range. His career averages entering this season were 36.7 percent shooting and 26.4 percent from beyond the arc. Henry has twice this season tied his career high with four steals in a game. He is currently tied for the team lead with 16 steals. Being aggressive is in Henry s nature on the court and it is showing this year. Although he has hit just 62.2 percent from the free throw line, he has done a nice job getting to the stripe as he one of only three players with at least 25 attempts from the line. Henry raised his free throw average significantly over the past two games. Henry has hit 14-of-17 (82.4 percent) against UMBC and South Carolina State. He hit an impressive 7-of-8 from the line against UMBC after entering the game hitting 45.0 percent in his first nine games this year, and followed with a 7-of-9 effort against SCSU. Leading the way that day was redshirt freshman Brandon Richardson, who posted six points, three rebounds, an assist and four steals in 16 minutes in his career debut. Richardson s numbers did not tell the whole story as he made several dives to the floor and other hustle plays to ignite NU in the second half after SJSU cut the lead from 18 points to five. His steal off an inbounds and three-point play turned the game around, helping NU score 10 points in less than a minute to pull away for good. Following another strong performance in Nebraska s game against IPFW, Sadler said: Brandon Richardson makes plays that don t show up on the box score. When we went to the for the first time (that night), he made two huge hustle plays. He does things that might give you three or four more possessions that you wouldn t otherwise get in a game. Against UAPB, he scored a season-high nine points and had two assists without a turnover in 23 minutes of action. He has posted six points over the past three games, after scoring just six points total in his previous five games. He has nine steals over the past six games. Richardson posted at least three steals in a game three times this year, and is third on the team with 15 steals. He needs nine steals to move onto the Nebraska freshman top-10 list. Along with Richardson, senior Paul Velander has also been praised by Sadler for his energy coming off the bench, including following the Saint Louis game. In his postgame press conference that night, Sadler said: We ve got to get the rest of the team to make effort plays like Paul Velander. There s not a player in the country who makes more effort plays than that guy. Velander has hit 31 3-pointers in 11 games, including nine games with at least three treys apiece. He is third on the team in scoring at 9.5 points per game. Velander leads the Big 12 Conference in 3-point percentage, as he has hit 49.2 percent from behind the arc. Velander posted as season-high 14 points with four 3-pointers against UMBC. He also made his first 2-point basket of the year and drew two charges against the Retrievers. He also leads the team with 13 charges taken, including three against each San Jose State and Saint Louis. Velander s effort finally rubbed off on his teams against IPFW. NU had six charges taken, each by a different individual, including one by Velander. MILLER READY TO ROLL Cookie Miller was the only true freshman to play for the Huskers last year when he posted near-record numbers for assists (109) and steals (58). This year, he is trying to take it a step higher as one of the top returning point guards in the Big 12 Conference. Miller was sixth in the league in assists (3.6 apg) last year and the only freshman in the top 10 for assist-to-turnover ratio (1.7). He was fourth in the Big 12 for steals (1.93), and led the league in Big 12-only contests (2.0 spg). This season, Miller leads NU with 42 assists and 16 steals. Miller has averaged 7.8 points, 5.8 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.8 steals in his last three home games played. He had one of his best games of the season against Alabama State, scoring a season-high nine points while tying his season highs with six assists and four rebounds in 25 minutes. It was the first game he started this season and the 25th start of his career. Miller came off the bench to efficiently guide the Husker offense in the second half of a comeback victory over Creighton. Miller had five assists and a steal in 15 minutes in the second half as Nebraska came back from 13 points down to earn the win. He finished with season highs in assists (6) and rebounds (4) while adding two steals in the win. Miller also sparked a struggling Husker squad in the second half against IPFW. He came off the bench and posted six assists, including four in the second half, with four steals to lead the Huskers to a come-from-behind victory. Miller recorded four rebounds against Saint Louis, Creighton and Alabama State in consecutive games, tying his season high. Miller led the team in rebounding against Saint Louis, only the second time in his career he led the squad in boards. Last year, he tied three others for the team lead with four rebounds against Kansas at home. Former Husker great Cookie Belcher owns the Nebraska freshman record for steals with 87 and holds the NU and Big 12 Conference record with 353 steals in his career. Anderson has made a living with the long ball in Lincoln, hitting 105 treys in his career to tie for ninth in Nebraska history. Despite being one of the best 3-point shooters in the league the past two years, Anderson has struggled recently, hitting just one of his last eight attempts over the past four games. In his first career game, the lanky 6-6, 205- pound scored game highs with 17 points and nine rebounds against San Jose State. McCray hit 6-of-15 shots from the floor in his career debut against the Spartans. He just missed becoming the first Husker freshman to record a double-double in his first career game since Aleks Maric accomplished the feat in McCray has scored in double figures in three of the last six games, and ranks fifth on the team with 7.3 points per game. He is tied for the team lead with 3.9 rebounds per game and leads NU with nine blocks. NOTING THE SOUTH CAROLINA ST. GAME Nebraska rebounded from its first home loss to a non-conference opponent in three years with a solid victory over South Carolina State. With the win, the Huskers improved to 8-3 on the season. NU has started at least 8-3 in each of the past four seasons, including all three seasons under Head Coach Doc Sadler. Prior to Sadler s arrival, the Huskers had opened a season with an 8-3 record or better just three times in 10 seasons. Ade Dagunduro hit his first three shots of the game to establish a new Nebraska record for consecutive made field goals with 15 straight. Dagunduro hit his final three shots against IPFW, before making all nine of his attempts against UMBC. His record bettered the old mark of 13 set by Mikki Moore in 1997 and was just two shy of the Big 12 Conference record. Nebraska s 77 points marked its second-highest total of the season. The Huskers have now scored at least 70 points four times this season, including two of their last three contests. Chris Balham scored a season-high seven points and pulled down a season-high seven rebounds, one shy of his career high. He played a season-high 18 minutes and five of his rebounds came on the offensive glass, tying for the most by a Husker this season. Paul Velander hit three 3-pointers in the game, marking the ninth time this season he has made at least three 3-pointers in a game. In his first game in front of a big crowd, McCray settled in nicely, posting six points, five rebounds, three blocked shots and two steals in 23 minutes off the bench against Creighton. MCCRAY NAMED ROOKIE OF THE WEEK Nebraska redshirt freshman guard Toney McCray was named the Big 12 Rookie of the Week in a vote by league sportswriters on Monday, Nov. 17. McCray was honored alongside Oklahoma s Blake Griffin, who won the league s player-of-the-week award. The 6-6, 205-pounder from Missouri City, Texas, was the Huskers leading scorer and rebounder in both its exhibition win and the season-opening win over San Jose State. McCray, one of four Huskers who redshirted last year, quickly made his presence felt on the court as he posted a game-high 17 points against the Spartans. He also added a team-high nine rebounds, just missing out on becoming the first Husker since Aleks Maric to produce a double-double in his first career game. McCray added a steal and an assist in 23 minutes off the bench, helping the Huskers to a advantage in bench scoring. McCray is the second player in Coach Doc Sadler s three years to earn the league s rookieof-the-week award. Last year, guard Ade Dagunduro won the award on Dec. 17 for his effort in helping the Huskers defeat nationally ranked Oregon. Overall, McCray is the eighth Husker to win the league award. Only two players, Joe McCray and Kimani Ffriend, have won the rookie-of-the-week award more than once for the Huskers as each earned it two times in their first season in Lincoln. BOMBS AWAY Nebraska has been strong from outside the arc during coach Doc Sadler s tenure, including this year. Despite the 3-point line moving back a foot to 20-9, the Huskers are still among the national leaders, hitting 37.6 percent from long range. Last season, Nebraska hit 34.2 percent from beyond the arc. The Huskers had hit at a solid percentage from 3-point range in its first five games, but NU took it to a whole new level against Alabama State. Nebraska hit an impressive 14-of-25 (56.0 percent) from beyond the arc against the Hornets. NU only connected on 51.7 percent (30-of-58) from the floor overall. The 14 3-pointers were the most by the Huskers since hitting 15 against Miami on the road in the season. The school record is 18 3-pointers against No. 1 Kansas in Six Huskers hit from outside the arc, including four players with three 3-pointers apiece. Sek Henry led the way with a perfect 3-for-3 night beyond the arc while Ryan Anderson (3-of-4), Steve Harley (3-of-5) and Paul Velander (3-of- 6) each had three treys apiece. Amazingly on a night when all the 3s were falling, Velander attempted his first two shots inside the arc, missing both. Velander s first 26 attempts from the field this season were 3-point attempts until a missed jumper in the first half against Alabama State. Entering the matchup with SCSU, he is now 1-of-5 from inside the arc this season. DEFENSE AMONG NCAA S BEST Nebraska is among the Big 12 and national leaders in several defensive categories in Nebraska leads the Big 12 in scoring defense at 55.1 points per game. Through Dec. 31, Iowa State was second in the league, allowing opponents 60.9 points per game. Nebraska ranked 27th nationally and first in the conference in field-goal percentage defense on Dec. 22. Nebraska has allowed just one team to hit over 47 percent from the field this season, while six of NU s first 11 opponents have been held under 40.0 percent from the field. The Huskers have allowed teams to hit just 28.9 percent from 3-point range to rank among the top 40 in the country. NU has held three teams under 20.0 percent shooting from beyond the arc this season. The Huskers have not allowed an opponent more than 66 points in a game over the first 11 contests this season. Nebraska has tied the longest streak to open a season without allowing a team to reach 67 points since the Nebraska squad did it through the first 18 games of the season. Only once in the 3-point era ( ) has Nebraska held every non-conference team below 67 points. Nebraska held each of its first six opponents to fewer than 58 points. The last time NU held opponents to less than 60 points over the first six games of the year was the start of the season.

9 NEBRASKA BASKETBALL 9 The last time the Huskers held consecutive opponents to fewer than 60 points in any stretch of at least six games was the seven contests between games 12 through 18 of the season. That was a streak of 820 games before it was matched starting this season. The Huskers have allowed 614 points in the first 11 games of the year. The 50 points scored by TCU marked the fewest Nebraska has allowed on the road since NU held Kansas State to 42 points in the first league road game of the campaign. TCU's 50 points were also the fewest Nebraska has allowed in a true road opener since giving up just 49 points at Minnesota in the season. COMEBACK KIDS Nebraska not only picked up its second straight win in Lincoln over in-state foe Creighton on Nov. 29, but it also made for one of the more memorable comebacks by the Huskers since the formation of the Big 12 Conference. Nebraska s come-from-behind victory was keyed by a strong second-half performance from Steve Harley and Cookie Miller. Harley finished with a game-high 18 points with three steals and had the key assist on Ade Dagunduro s game-winning basket with 2.7 seconds remaining. Miller posted six assists and two steals and got the Huskers offense into high gear after trailing by 13 points at halftime. The 13-point deficit the Huskers overcame matched the largest comeback under Coach Doc Sadler. It also tied for the second-largest comeback by Nebraska during the Big 12 era, matching the 13-point deficit NU overcame at Texas Tech during Sadler s first season on the sideline. The largest deficit Nebraska has rebounded from to win since the formation of the Big 12 Conference was 20 points against Kansas State in the first year of the league ( ). KSU also had the biggest halftime lead that NU has overcome in the Big 12 era as the Wildcats led by 18 points at the break. The Huskers pulled within two in the final minute and had the ball with less than 8 seconds remaining but came up short, falling by two points, HUSKERS ROLL UP WINS AT HOME When coach Doc Sadler took over the program before the season, Nebraska made winning at home a priority. When adding in the Huskers home game against Oregon at the Qwest Center in Omaha (considered a home contest due to RPI standards by NCAA), the Huskers won 31 straight games against nonconference teams, including 26 straight under Sadler. Nebraska tied the school record with 31 straight non-conference home wins, a streak that ranked eighth nationally until the Huskers fell to UMBC on Dec. 23. Following the win over South Carolina State, Nebraska is now 27-1 under Coach Doc Sadler at home against non-conference opponents. Before falling to UMBC, Nebraska s last SCHEDULE NOTES Nebraska faces a rugged schedule as it will play 13 of its 29 regular-season games against teams that reached the 2008 postseason. Eight of the 13 game against postseason teams will be played at the Devaney Center. Among the Huskers' opponents that reached last year's NCAA Tournament were: NCAA champion Kansas (twice), Elite Eight participant Texas, NCAA second-round qualifiers Kansas State (twice) and Texas A&M along with NCAA qualifiers Baylor, Oklahoma and UMBC. NU will also face Arizona State, Creighton, Alabama State and Oklahoma State, all of which played in the postseason NIT. The Huskers will play 18 regular-season games at the Devaney Center for the second straight season. Last year, the Huskers went 15-3 in the building with the only losses coming to eventual national champion Kansas and NCAA qualifier Baylor, along with an overtime setback to Missouri. Nebraska played its 500th game in the Bob Devaney Sports Center last season and will be gunning for its 400th win in building history in Through Dec. 30, the Huskers own a record in their 33rd season at the Devaney Center, good for an impressive.762 winning percentage. Nebraska will look to keep an outstanding home winning streak alive in as the Huskers' look for their 33rd straight winning season at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. The Huskers have never had a losing season in the Devaney Center since the building opened for the campaign. The Huskers played three true road games during the non-conference slate, facing Arizona State in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series along with Oregon State and TCU. It was the sixth time in the Big 12 era that the Huskers played at least three true road games in non-league@ action and the first time since when Nebraska played at UAB, Marquette and Tennessee. The Huskers will be seen on television within the state at least 24 times during the season, including every road game for the second straight year. Every conference road game will be televised for the third consecutive season. The Huskers have averaged more than 13 televised contests (national, regional and local) each of the past seven years. Nebraska will be seen nationally at least eight times this season on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, FSN and CBS College Sports. More than 10 additional games will also be available around the country on satellite.

10 10 HUSKERS.COM HUSKERS SIGN FOUR FOR Third-year coach Doc Sadler announced Friday, Nov. 14, that a strong lineup of four talented athletes, including three standing 6-8 or taller, have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Nebraska basketball squad for the season. Among the signees are: 6-10, 220-pound center Vander Joaquim from Luanda, Angola; 6-8, 210-pound forward Christian Standhardinger from Munich, Germany; 6-9, 220-pound forward Brandon Ubel from Overland Park, Kan.; and 6-2, 175-pound point/shooting guard Rayes Gallegos from Jordan, Utah. I m excited about this class and what they can bring to Nebraska, Sadler said. When we go on the road, something we look for in addition to talent is character, and that has been a continued priority this year. I feel good about the way they will represent Nebraska. On the court, I feel they will help us continue to improve and compete for a Big 12 championship. Joaquim averaged 21.1 points and 16.8 rebounds per contest last year with 89 blocks. He was ranked at one point the No. 12 high school center in the country by Scout.com (71st nationally overall) and No. 15 center by Rivals.com (115th nationally overall). Joaquim was tabbed the No. 2 power forward on the West Coast by Scout.com before moving to West Virginia to attend Mountain State Academy in Standhardinger was named the MVP of the NBBL in 2008 and in the final of the 2008 U19 German Championship, he scored 37 points and posted 12 rebounds. He also earned top scorer honors at the Europe s Best Junior Tournament in 2007 and was the MVP of the German Top 4 in Standhardinger also was a member of the German Junior National Team in 2007 and This season, Standhardinger has averaged 19.1 points, 8.0 rebounds, 1.3 steals and 1.1 assists per game for his club team as of late November. Ubel is a skilled forward with a nice touch from outside who also possesses the ability to score off a number of post moves and mid-range jumpers. Last year as a junior, he helped Blue Valley West to the state tournament and his team won the Class 6A state title during his sophomore season. During the summer AAU circuit, Ubel averaged close to 20 points and eight rebounds per game for the Wedman Pumas. He owns a 4.1 grade-point average in high school and his sister, Kayla Ubel, is a sophomore on the NU track team. Gallegos came on during the summer AAU circuit when he averaged about 25 points per game. Gallegos was rated the No. 53 shooting guard in the country by Scouts.com and was tabbed the No. 7 shooting guard on the West Coast. Gallegos was the team s third-leading scorer at 10.5 points per game as a junior, helping the team to the state tournament. home loss to a non-conference team came on Dec. 3, 2005 against UAB in a setback. That strong defensive push was evident in NU s opener as they forced 25 San Jose State turnovers. Spartans point guard Justin Graham was frustrated into 10 turnovers while going 0- of-5 from the floor in 33 minutes of action. The 25 turnovers Nebraska forced in the season opener against San Jose State were the second-highest total under Coach Doc Sadler. The most turnovers a Husker squad has forced in Sadler s tenure is 26 last season against North Carolina Central. NU has now forced 211 turnovers through 11 games, while allowing teams to record just 110 assists on 202 baskets. The Huskers have forced at least 20 turnovers in six games this year (25 vs. San Jose State; 23 vs. Arkansas-Pine Bluff; 24 vs. Creighton; 24 at Oregon State; 24 vs. IPFW; 21 vs. South Carolina State). Last year, the Huskers forced 20 turnovers in a game six times all season. The 24 turnovers forced at Oregon State are the most by a Husker opponent away from Lincoln since Texas Tech had 26 turnovers against Nebraska in the first round of the 1999 Big 12 Championship. Nebraska posted 16 steals in the defensive effort against San Jose State, the most by the Huskers under Sadler. The previous best under Sadler was 15 steals vs. North Texas in The Huskers have had double-figure steals in four times this season and at least eight steals in 10 games this season. Eight Huskers have recorded a steal this year, including seven averaging at least 1.0 steal per game. The most steals in a game by a single Husker this season is four. Junior guard Sek Henry and redshirt freshman Brandon Richardson each had four steals apiece against San Jose State in the opener and Henry added four more against UAPB while Cookie Miller had four against IPFW. The defensive pressure has helped Nebraska to a advantage in points off turnovers this season. On the opposite end, Nebraska has been solid with the ball, averaging just 12.5 turnovers per game (opponents: 19.2 tpg). Nebraska posted just six turnovers against Saint Louis, tying the mark for fewest miscues in Sadler s first three years. NU also had just six turnovers against Colorado in The last time Nebraska had fewer than six turnovers was when NU set the school record with three turnovers at Iowa State in Nebraska had just three turnovers in the first half against Alabama State. NU s season low for a half was two turnovers in the second half against Saint Louis. NEW LINES DRAWN While the 3-point line moved back one foot from 19-9 to 20-9 for the first time in men s college basketball this season, Nebraska has not been effected as much as some teams around the country from beyond the arc. Nebraska is hitting 37.6 percent from beyond the arc to rank fourth in the Big 12 Conference. Last year, the Huskers hit 34.4 percent from 3-point range on the season. Senior Paul Velander has been more effective than ever despite stepping back further to shoot. He is hitting 49.2 percent (31- of-63) from beyond the arc to lead the Big 12 Conference. Nebraska s 3-point defense this year has been solid as opponents have hit just 28.9 percent (54-of-187) from beyond the arc. Last season, opponents hit 36.4 percent on the year. Nebraska s 3-point percentage defense leads the Big 12 Conference, the only league team holding opponents below 30 percent from beyond the arc.

11 NEBRASKA BASKETBALL 11 Six of Nebraska s 11 opponents have been held to five or fewer 3-pointers in a game, including four with three or fewer. ON THE GLASS The Huskers will put a small lineup on the floor just about every night this season, giving Coach Doc Sadler reason to be interested in Nebraska s rebounding, especially on the defensive end. All of NU s guards will need to be capable rebounders this season to keep the opposing team from getting easy baskets on second chances. Through 11 games, Nebraska trails on the glass by more than five rebounds per game (-5.7 rpg, 34.1 to 28.4). The Huskers outrebounded each of their first two opponents but then fell on the boards in three straight games by a combined 26 rebounds. Nebraska has trailed on the glass each of the past four games since outrebounding a much taller Alabama State squad by +7 boards, the Huskers largest rebounding margin of the season Redshirt freshman Toney McCray and junior Ryan Anderson lead the team in rebounding, averaging 3.9 boards per game apiece. McCray owns a team game season-high nine boards in the season opener. JONES OPTS FOR SURGERY Coach Doc Sadler announced during his postgame press conference on Dec. 3, that Eshaunte Bear Jones is done playing this year because of a foot injury. He s finished as far as playing for this year, Sadler said. We wanted to try to get through the year because he s such a good offensive player and he has some size, but he s not going to be able to play anymore. On the year, Jones played in four contests, averaging 1.8 points and 1.3 rebounds per game. He played 16 minutes in the season opener and then 12 minutes, 13 and 5 over the next three games before sitting out against Creighton and Alabama State. He had successful surgery on his foot on Dec. 18 and is expected to need a 3-4 month rehab before returning to the court. CHAPMAN TO TRANSFER Sophomore Alex Chapman announced on Tuesday, Dec. 16, that he will transfer from NU following the end of the fall semester. The forward from Canby, Ore., had not played in a game in his three semesters at Nebraska after suffering a knee injury that required surgery during the preseason each of the past two years. Despite sitting out because of injury, Chapman was the Huskers tallest eligible player this season. Freshman center Christopher Niemann, who stands 6-11, is ineligible to play this season because of an NCAA ruling. VELANDER NAMED LOWE S SENIOR CLASS CANDIDATE In mid-december, Nebraska senior guard Paul Velander was announced among 30 candidates for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award, presented annually to an NCAA Division I student-athlete in nine sports. Based on criteria including character, achievements in the classroom and community and competition on the court, the award winners will be selected by national balloting of head basketball coaches, national media and college basketball fans. From each of the two lists of 30 nominees, a national media committee will select 10 finalists for the Lowe s Senior CLASS Award in February Lowe s, an official corporate partner of the NCAA, will present the winners with trophies during the weekends of the respective NCAA Men s and Women s Final Four. Velander is a two-year letterwinner under Coach Doc Sadler and is currently second on the Husker squad in scoring at 9.3 points per game. The Blacksburg, Va., native has averaged nearly three 3-pointers per game, as he paces the squad with 31 treys in 11 contests. Velander is a two-time first-team academic All-Big 12 performer in the classroom and has earned Big 12 Commissioner s Honor Roll accolades four times. Last season he was also named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) Honors Court for his achievements in the classroom. An acronym for Celebrating Loyalty and Achievement for Staying in School, the CLASS Award was launched during the season to honor the attributes of college basketball seniors who remain committed to their university and pursue the many rewards that a senior season and complete college education brings. The list of basketball candidates includes a range of universities and conferences across the country. There are 30 male award candidates representing 27 schools and 14 conferences. The Big 12 Conference leads the way with five candidates. The women s award list includes 30 candidates from 18 conferences and the Big 12 Conference also landed the most candidates with five. The Lowe s Senior CLASS Award is in its eighth year for men s and women s basketball. Previous winners of the men s award include Juan Dixon of Maryland (2002), David West of Xavier (2003), Jameer Nelson of St. Joseph s (2004), Wayne Simien of Kansas (2005), J.J. Reddick of Duke (2006), Alando Tucker of Wisconsin (2007) and Shan Foster of Vanderbilt (2008).

20 HUSKERS.COM NEBRASKA GAME-BY-GAME NOTEBOOK (GAMES 1-10) GAME 1 VS. SAN JOSE STATE (NU 63, SJSU 46) The Nebraska Cornhuskers jumped out of the gate in fine fashion, using a 17-0 second-half run to keep San Jose State at bay in a victory at the Devaney Center. The Huskers went into halftime with an 18-point lead but saw it nearly vanish as, at one point, NU went more than eight minutes without a field goal. SJSU cut the lead to five before redshirt freshman Brandon Richardson and senior Paul Velander turned it up a notch on defense and redshirt freshman Toney McCray led the Huskers on offense as they picked up their sixth straight season-opening victory. McCray paced the squad with 17 points and nine rebounds while Velander added nine points on three 3-pointers. Nebraska harassed the Spartans into 25 turnovers on the day while collecting 16 steals, the most under third-year coach Doc Sadler. GAME 2 AT TCU (NU 62, TCU 50) Playing in their first road game of the season, the Nebraska Huskers responded in strong fashion, holding off TCU for a victory in Ft. Worth. The win snapped a streak of 12 straight losses in true road openers, and was only Nebraska's third win in the Big 12 era in the first game of the season away from Lincoln. Nebraska shot the ball well from 3-point range, hitting 5-of-10 from beyond the arc in the opening period while overcoming 15 first-half fouls. NU used a 9-0 run to burst out to a lead at the break. The Huskers were up 16, 42-26, before the Horned Frogs mounted a comeback, pulling within seven, 46-39, before redshirt freshman Toney McCray drained a 3-pointer from the corner with the shot clock winding down to ignite the offense. Nebraska held TCU to just 10 field goals, including only three 3-pointers on 19 attempts, as the Horned Frogs shot just 27.0 percent from the floor. The 50 points were the fewest NU has allowed in a true road opener since GAME 3 VS. ARKANSAS-PINE BLUFF (NU 67, UAPB 53) Nebraska was sluggish to start but picked up the pace over the final minutes of the first half and held off a hard-nosed effort by Arkansas-Pine Bluff, 67-53, at the Devaney Center. The Huskers used a 17-3 run over the last 7:42 before halftime to go into the break up Sek Henry scored 12 of his 14 points in the opening frame while Steve Harley led the Huskers with 18 points in the contest. Nebraska forced 23 turnovers and won despite losing the battle on the boards, Along with Harley and Henry, Paul Velander added three 3-pointers for the third straight game and Brandon Richardson had the best of his young career, scoring nine points with two assists in 23 minutes. NU had 11 steals in the contest with Henry leading the way with four. GAME 4 VS. SAINT LOUIS (NU 71, SLU 57) Sek Henry and Ade Dagunduro jump-started the Husker offense and Nebraska executed the defensive game plan to near perfection, running away with a victory over Saint Louis. Henry hit 7-of-8 attempts from the floor for a game-high 19 points, just one off his career high. He added four assists without a turnover, as Nebraska had just six turnovers as a team. Dagunduro added 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, after entering the game with just 13 points in his first three games. He helped Nebraska hit 59.1 percent from the floor, including an impressive 65.0 percent in the second half. Saint Louis led on the boards, but were held to just 41.7 percent shooting. NU kept the Billikens off the scoreboard for just over six minutes while powering to a 9-0 run. The surge extended the Husker lead to 16 points with just over three minutes to play, sealing the victory. GAME 5 VS. CREIGHTON (NU 54, CU 52) Steve Harley scored a game-high 18 points, but it was his lone assist that made the biggest difference as Harley set up Ade Dagunduro's game-winner in the final seconds of a tremendous comeback victory. Harley, who hit 8-of-16 shots from the floor and tied his career high with six rebounds, had the ball on a designed play for him in the final seconds. With the shot clock off, Harley drove the lane with less than seven seconds remaining. As he got into the lane, Creighton hedged to the middle and while in the air, Harley fed the ball to a wide-open Dagunduro, who had an uncontested layup with 2.7 seconds remaining to give NU the win. Nebraska hit just 30.4 percent from the floor in the first half and trailed by 13 points at the intermission. NU used a 27-7 surge, including a 13-0 run that included three 3-pointers, to move back ahead and hold on for its fifth straight victory to open the season. The 13-point comeback tied the largest for a Husker squad under Coach Doc Sadler, equaling the mark set in 2007 on the road against Texas Tech. Dagunduro finished with 11 points while Cookie Miller's strong second-half play helped him finish with six assists, four rebounds and two steals off the bench as Nebraska won for just the second time in the last 10 regular-season matchups between the in-state opponents. GAME 6 VS. ALABAMA STATE (NU 80, ASU 51) Nebraska had four players record three 3-pointers apiece as the Huskers hit 14 treys on the night while running past Alabama State, 80-51, to end a four-game home stand at the Devaney Center. Steve Harley led the way with 16 points including a trio of 3-pointers while Ryan Anderson added 11 points by hitting 3-of-4 from long range. Anderson, who moved into the career top 10 for 3-pointers made with the effort, added a game- and career-best seven assists without a turnover. Nebraska posted 23 assists on the night as it hit 51.7 percent from the floor, including a blistering 56.0 percent from beyond the arc. Sek Henry was a perfect 3-for-3 from long range while Paul Velander added his fifth game with three 3-pointers. The Huskers also held Alabama State to 51 points on 36.0 percent shooting, including a paltry 25.0 percent from long range. GAME 7 AT NO. 19 ARIZONA STATE (ASU 64, NU 44) No. 19 Arizona State used a pair of key runs and strong second-half play by All- America candidate James Harden to ease past Nebraska, 64-44, at Wells Fargo Arena in Tempe. The Sun Devils evened the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series with the Huskers at 1-1. NU defeated ASU, 62-47, last year in Lincoln. Nebraska came out strong and led by as many as five points as ASU had just one basket in the first 10 minutes of the game. The Sun Devils stormed back at the end of the period, using a 15-2 run to end the frame and go into the locker room with a advantage. After the break, a key 8-0 surge spurred by Harden knocked back the charging Huskers. Harden finished with 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists. The Huskers struggled against the ASU zone, hitting just 28.9 percent from the field with only Steve Harley (11 points) reaching double figures. GAME 8 AT OREGON STATE (OSU 64, NU 63) Ade Dagunduro's arcing shot from the baseline hit off the back of the rim and bounced away at the buzzer as Oregon State held on for a victory over the Huskers in Gill Coliseum as the Huskers dropped their second straight road game. The teams went back and forth all game, accumulating 11 ties and 20 lead changes before the Beavers got four free throws in the final 30 seconds from Daniel Deane to ice the game. Dagunduro put NU up on a pair of free throws with 11 seconds remaining before Deane had the ball stripped, but Cookie Miller was called for the foul to put Deane at the line with 8.3 seconds left. Deane hit both and Miller's jumper at the other end missed and went out of bounds with 1.1 seconds remaining to set up Dagunduro's final attempt. Dagunduro led the Huskers with 16 points while Toney McCray came off the bench for 13 points, seven rebounds and two steals. GAME 9 VS. IPFW (NU 75, IPFW 48) Nebraska was sluggish in the first half and trailed by five, 34-29, at the intermission following a 16-4 run by IPFW to end the period. But the Huskers, led by Steve Harley and Cookie Miller, caught fire on offense in the second half and clamped down defensively while posting their 31st consecutive non-conference home win to tie the school record. Harley scored a career-high 21 points on 9-of-15 shooting from the floor, helping Nebraska hit at a scorching 60.9-percent clip from the field. He had 12 points at the half and became the first Husker this season to eclipse the 20-point plateau. Miller continually set up Harley and his teammates, finishing with six assists without a turnover. He had four steals and seven points off the bench, although he started the second half, and helped Nebraska to a 31-8 run to put the game away. Defensively, the Huskers held IPFW to just 14 points on 21.7 percent shooting in the second period while forcing 24 Mastodon turnovers. GAME 10 VS. UMBC (UMBC 66, NU 64) The Huskers' furious second-half rally came up just short as Nebraska fell at home to a non-conference opponent for the first time since 2005, falling to UMBC. NU never led in the contest and trailed by as many as 20 points in the first period following a 13-0 run. UMBC led by 16 at the intermission before the Huskers started a comeback, cutting within two points in the final minute. Nebraska held the Retrievers without a field goal over the final 6:42 to get back into the contest, but UMBC hit 15-of-18 at the free throw line, including their last nine points, to record the upset. Ade Dagunduro led the comeback with 15 of his career-high 19 points in the second period. He finished the game 9-of-9 from the field, tying the NU single-game record for field goals without a miss. Dagunduro's basket with 30 seconds remaining cut the deficit to three points, and after the teams traded free throws, Paul Velander had a trey that would have tied the game rim out with 14 seconds left. NU added a free throw by Steve Harley to cut it to the final deficit but one last shot attempt with under a second was blocked out of bounds. Velander finished with 14 points including four 3-pointers while Harley had 13 points and Sek Henry added 12 points.

SOUTH CAROLINA STATE (NU 77, SCSU 63) The Nebraska Cornhuskers made their final appearance at the Bob Devaney Sports Center in 2008 a happy one as they used a strong second half to run past South Carolina State, Sek Henry nearly tied his season high with 19 points while Ade Dagunduro scored 14 points and finished 5-of-8 from the field. Dagunduro set a school record as he knocked down his first three attempts from the floor, extending his consecutive field-goals made streak to 15 straight over three games. He surpassed the previous Nebraska record of 13 consecutive made field goals by Mikki Moore in the 1997 NIT. Dagunduro and Henry helped the Huskers to a 15-0 run int he second half, pushing a tie out to a advantage. Henry was 7-of-9 at the free throw line, as the Huskers got to the stripe 35 times (22 made) while hitting 46.3 percent from the field in their second-highest scoring game before New Year's.
