While Nebraska s offense continued to play well and eclipse the 75-point plateau for the second straight game, the Husker defensive effort was atypical for a Doc Sadler-coached squad. NU allowed 83 points, only the fifth time the Huskers have surrendered PROBABLE STARTERS (Based on previous starting lineup) 23 - SPENCER 15.5 ppg, 4.0 rpg, 3.3 apg 3 - RICHARDSON 8.3 ppg, 3.0 rpg, 3.8 apg 25 - WALKER 10.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg at least 80 points at home in Sadler s six seasons. Oregon shot 49.1 percent from the floor after the Huskers held their first three foes to 34 percent. One encouraging sign for the Huskers was the offensive output of their post players. Juniors Jorge Brian Diaz and Brandon Ubel combined for 36 points on 13-of-18 shooting against the Ducks. Diaz reached the 20-point mark for the first time since the campaign and added six rebounds and four blocks, while hitting 8-of-11 shots from the floor. Ubel had a career-high 15 points on 5-of-7 shooting after scoring just seven points in Nebraska s first three contests. Now the Huskers have to turn their focus to a South Dakota State team that comes in riding a three-game win streak and is 4-2 on the season. The Jackrabbits come off a win at Mercer Wednesday night, as Nate Wolters 16 points and eight assists led four SDSU players in double figures. SDSU s only two losses have been at Minnesota and at Georgia and the Jacks had a chance to win both contests. SDSU features point guard Nate Wolters who averages 20.7 points and 5.8 assists per game. 3 3 NEBRASKA BASKETBALL LAST TIME OUT Nebraska posted a valiant comeback to erase a 15-point second-half deficit, but fell short in an loss to Oregon Wednesday night at the Devaney Center. Trailing with 10:31 remaining, Nebraska stormed back behind Jorge Brian Diaz, as the junior center scored eight of his 12 second-half points in a 22-7 spurt to lead the charge. Nebraska kept chipping away at the Ducks lead before Bo Spencer s basket with 2:05 remaining tied the score at 75 and brought the Devaney Center crowd to its feet. Diaz, who finished with 21 points, six rebounds and three blocks, blocked Oregon s next shot to give the Huskers a shot at the lead, but Nebraska could not capitalize. The Huskers were called for an offensive foul on the next possession, giving the Ducks the ball with 1:08 remaining. The Huskers forced a missed 3-pointer by Johnathan Loyd, but E.J. Singler got the offensive rebound and was fouled with 43 seconds left. Singler, who went 7-of-8 from the line as part of a 14-point night, sank both free throws to give the Ducks a lead they would not relinquish. Nebraska had an opportunity to take the lead but Dylan Talley missed a 3-pointer on Nebraska s next possession, and Oregon got the rebound before Garett Sim s two free throws made it a four-point game. Oregon went 8-for-8 from the foul line in the final minute to snap the Huskers 26-game home conference win streak and hand Nebraska just its second home non-conference loss in six seasons under Doc Sadler. Diaz was one of four Huskers in double figures, as Talley came off the bench for 18 points, including four 3-pointers, while Brandon Ubel had 15 points, including 5-of-7 shooting. Bo Spencer was the fourth Nebraska player in double figures, finishing with 11 points and five assists. Oregon (3-1) placed four in double figures, led by Sim s 20-point effort which including 4-of-6 from 3-point range and all eight free throws. SCOUTING SOUTH DAKOTA STATE South Dakota comes to town with a 4-2 record after winning three games this week at the CBE Classic in Macon, Georgia. The Jackrabbits, coached by 17th-year coach Scott Nagy, downed Niagara (79-71), Sam Houston State (77-60) and Mercer (74-61) in three consecutive days. SDSU s two losses have been at Minnesota (55-71) and at Georgia (61-72). The Jackrabbits return three starters and eight letterwinners from a team that went before losing to eventual champion Oakland in the Summit League Tournament last year. Junior point guard Nate Wolters is the headliner, as the 6-foot-4 guard is a first-team All-Summit League selection after averaging 19.5 points, 6.0 assists per game in He is putting up similar numbers this year with 20.7 points, 5.8 assists and 4.7 rebounds per game. Senior forward Griffan Callahan is also in double figures, averaging 10.3 points and a team-high 5.7 rebounds per game. Nebraska and South Dakota State will meet for only the second time in the last 30 years on Saturday afternoon. An All-Big 12 performer, Jeter led the Huskers in both scoring and 2010 to score 20+ points in consecutive assists in contests. Luckily for the Huskers, they already had a veteran point guard on Ranks 10th in the Big Ten in scoring the roster, as senior Bo Spencer sat out last season after transferring (15.5 ppg), 11th in free throw percentage from LSU. He has been solid early on, averaging a team-high 15.5 (81.8) and third in minutes played (34.8). points along with 4.0 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game in NU s first three contests. Spencer was the starting point guard on LSU s Southeastern Conference championship squad in , as the Tigers reached the second round before falling to eventual champion North Carolina. WALKER IS HUSKERS WINGMAN While Bo Spencer has been the Huskers leading scorer, senior Caleb Walker s shooting has been a major boon for the Huskers in the early going. The 6-foot-4 wing player from Hutchinson, Kan., is one of four Huskers averaging double figures with 10.5 points per game, but has done it in an efficient manner. Walker has taken just 20 shots in four games, is shooting an amazing 75.0 percent from the floor, including 8-of-11 from 3-point range. Walker comes into Saturday s game Wednesday s game ranked third in the Big Ten in shooting percentage and second in 3-point percentage (72.7). He is one of two players in the league hitting over 60 percent from 3-point range. He had the best offensive game of his career against Rhode Island on Nov. 20, scoring a career-high 17 points on 7-of-8 shooting from the floor. Walker was also 3-of-4 from 3-point range, the second game this year where he has hit at least a trio of 3-pointers. Against South Dakota in ths season opener, he paced Nebraska with 16 points on 5-of-5 shooting and seven rebounds in 24 minutes. Walker went 3-for-3 from 3-point range, as he set career highs in points and three-pointers in the season opener. Walker, who played both football and basketball as a freshman in junior college, is one of Nebraska s most athletic players and led Nebraska in rebounding last year. So far this season, he is averaging 5.0 rebounds per game to rank fourth on the team. He had eight of his points in 22-7 run to help the Huskers erase a 15-point deficit and tie the score at 75 before falling. Diaz has been consistent on offense, scoring at least nine points in all four games, including three double-figure efforts. He turned in a strong effort at USC on Nov. 14 when he nearly recorded a double double with 10 points, eight rebounds and three blocked shots in a

Against South Dakota, he finished with 11 points and a career-high five blocked shots, which equaled the highest single-game blocked shot total in last six years. Throughout his career, Diaz has been a scoring threat, as the 6-foot-11 junior is only the third Husker returnee to average in double figures under Sadler, joining Aleks Maric and Ryan Anderson in Diaz reached double figures 17 times last year, with the Huskers posting a 14-3 mark in those games. Diaz is also 322 points away from 1,000 for his career and could become just the 15th Husker to reach the 1,000-point plateau in three seasons. He is as healthy as he has been at Nebraska as he was fitted for special orthotics over the summer in hopes of alleviating the discomfort in his feet over the last year. TALLEY PROVIDES INSTANT OFFENSE When Doc Sadler talked about the addition of Dylan Talley, the thing he constantly mentioned was his ability to score. Talley has lived up to the billing in Nebraska s first four games, coming off the bench to average 12.5 points, 5.5 rebounds and 3.3 assists per game in just 22.5 minutes of action. Talley is among the Big Ten leaders in several categories, including 18th in the league in scoring, 12th in both rebounding and assists and 7th in 3-pointers made. Talley also tops all Big Ten players at the free throw line, going 9-for-9 from the charity stripe and is 10th in assist-to-turnover ratio. The 6-foot-5 guard had a season-high 18 points, including four 3-pointers, four rebounds, four assists and three steals against Oregon on Wednesday night. It was his second straight game in double figure, as he totaled 15 points, including a pair of 3-pointers and five rebounds in 18 minutes of action against Rhode Island on Sunday. Talley enjoyed a strong Husker debut against South Dakota, coming off the bench with 10 points, nine rebounds and five assists and had seven points and four rebounds at USC. Talley s adjustment may have been helped by the Division I experience he had when playing at Binghamton (N.Y.) University in That season, he was the America East Rookie of the Year and averaged 11.8 points and 3.7 rebounds per game. Last year, he was an honorable-mention All-American at Blinn College, ranking sixth in the NJCAA in scoring at 23.0 points per game while also chipping in 5.9 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game. RICHARDSON SHOWS IMPROVED SHOOTING TOUCH For senior Brandon Richardson, one of his primary focuses in the offseason was to improve his shooting touch and the senior s hard work is paying dividends early in the season. He comes into Saturday s game averaging 8.3 points per game on 50 percent shooting. More impressively, is his 7-of-12 from 3-point range after shooting 25 percent from beyond the arc as a junior. The 6-foot senior came up big in his return home to Los BIG TEN S LEADING BENCH SCORERS (as of Nov. 24) Player, School PPG Ben Brust, Wisconsin 13.0 Dylan Talley, Nebraska 12.5 Will Sheehey, Indiana 11.8 CAREER FREE THROW PERCENTAGE No. Player (Years) FT-FTA Pct. 1. He matched his career best with four 3-pointers and dished out a pair of assists, including the game-tying basket in double overtime. Against Rhode Island, Richarsdon keyed a Husker defense which held Jamal Wilson to 14 points after averaging 31 points in the Rams first two games and set career highs in both assists (eight) and steals (four) in 25 minutes. Richardson had six assists in the first half, in helping Nebraska build a 20-point lead. Richardson is eighth in the Big Ten in assists at 3.8 per game, third in the conference in 3-point shooting (58.3 percent) and fourth in steals (2.3 per game). The other strength Richardson has is the ability to convert from the free throw line, as he ranks third in school history with an 82.6 career percentage from the charity stripe and is one of only four players in program history to shoot over 80 percent for a career. Last year, he was second in Big 12 action in league play, hitting 87.8 of his free throws, including a stretch of 25 consecutive from the line. Throughout his career, he has been his best in late-game situations, going 69-of-74 from the foul line in the final five minutes of games, a remarkable 93.2 percentage. UBEL DOING THE DIRTY WORK INSIDE Junior Brandon Ubel has struggled offensively in the early going, but that has not affected his ability to rebound. The 6-foot-10 junior is tied for the team lead with 5.5 rebounds a game to rank 12th in the Big Ten, well up from his 3.7 rebounds per game as a sophomore. He is averaging 5.5 points per game and is coming off a career-high 15-point effort against Oregon on Wednesday. Ubel hopes that game is a continuation of last year, where he was playing his best basketball at the end of the year. He averaged 10.0 points on 58 percent shooting and 6.3 rebounds over the Huskers final four games - all against postseason teams. Those numbers were well above his season averages of 6.1 points and 3.7 rebounds per contest. He started the stretch with a near double-double against Missouri, scoring 11 points and matching his career high with nine rebounds. In the Big 12 Tournament opener against Oklahoma State, he had 11 points, including seven straight to help NU erase a 14-point deficit, and six rebounds. He started at center against Wichita State and had nine points and six rebounds in the NIT opener. HOME SWEET HOME Nebraska has been strong on its home court over the years, and have enjoyed an impressive home run under Coach Doc Sadler. No. In the past five-plus seasons under Sadler, Nebraska has dominated to the tune of a record (.784 winning percentage). Last year, Nebraska tied a program record with 17 home wins, going 17-2 in the friendly confines of the Devaney Center. Facing non-conference opponents, the Huskers have been nearly unbeatable at home under Sadler. During his tenure, the team has earned a 50-2 record at the Devaney Center, with the lone loss coming in the season. The Huskers saw their 26- game home win streak vs. non-conference foes snapped by Oregon on Wednesday. NEBRASKA COACH DOC SADLER Doc Sadler is in his sixth season on the Husker sideline after leading Nebraska to an NIT appearance in Sadler has guided the Huskers to postseason appearances in three of the last four seasons, and his 89 wins in his first five seasons was the most by any Husker coach in his first five years at Nebraska. He is now in fourth place on Nebraska s career wins list with 92. Sadler has guided teams to postseason berths in five of his seven years as a Division I head coach, as both of his UTEP squads reached postseason play before taking over the Nebraska program in August of Sadler will enter the season in a tie for fourth on NU s career wins list and could move into sole possession for fourth with a win on Friday. HUSKERS LOOK TO CONTINUE DEFENSIVE EXCELLENCE One hallmark of Nebraska basketball under Doc Sadler is a stout defense, and the Huskers were among the nation s best in Nebraska allowed an average of 60.5 points per game to lead the Big 12 for the third time in the last four seasons and rank 18th nationally. It is the fourth time in Sadler s seven years that his teams have led a league in scoring defense. The Huskers were seventh nationally in field goal percentage, the.389 field goal percentage was the lowest by a Husker team since the campaign. -The Huskers held 17 opponents under 60 points and only six opponents have scored more than 70 points in That is made more impressive when you consider that Nebraska has played 11 games against teams which rank in the top 40 nationally in scoring offense during the season. -Nebraska allowed only four teams to eclipse its season scoring average in 32 games. -Nebraska has held seven teams (Arkansas-Pine Bluff, Vanderbilt, Hofstra, Eastern Washington, Grambling State, Kansas and Texas A&M) to season lows in points. -Nebraska held 10 straight opponents to under 60 points earlier, the longest stretch by a Nebraska team since a 21-game stretch covering the and seasons. Nebraska is fourth in the Big Ten in field goal percentage defense. -Nebraska held South Dakota to 48 points, its second-lowest point total since the Coyotes moved to Division I prior to the season. The Huskers allowed just 49 points in regulation at USC before winning in double overtime. -The Huskers held a Rhode Island team which came into the game averaging 90.0 points per game to a seasonlow 63 points, including 20 in the first half.

7 7 NEBRASKA BASKETBALL 60 IS THE MAGIC NUMBER FOR DEFENSE Nebraska s success has been predicated on clamping down on the opposition. Last year, the Huskers held 17 of 32 opponents under 60 points, compiling a 15-2 mark in those games. Counting the two games this season, Nebraska has held 72 opponents to 60 points or less in Doc Sadler s tenure years at Nebraska, compiling a 64-8 record in those games. WORKING OVERTIME ON THE ROAD Nebraska s win at USC on Nov. 14 was a long time coming, as it was the program s first overtime road win since an win at Colorado on Feb. 17, Prior to the USC win, the Huskers had won just one overtime road game in that span. The win at USC, which featured comebacks in the final minutes of both regulation and overime, was the second time since 1995 that Nebraska won its road opener. TOUGH OPENING STRETCH FOR HUSKERS Nebraska s first five games before its inaugural Big Ten/ACC Challenge will provide a stern test for the Huskers. NU s first five opponents (South Dakota, USC, Rhode Island, Oregon and South Dakota State) all won at least 18 games a year ago while three of the squads reached postseason play. With games against Oregon and USC in its first four games, it is the earliest Nebraska has played two BCS-level foes since the season. NEW CONFERENCE, OLD FOES Nebraska s addition to the Big Ten Conference provides Husker fans a new set of rivals to get acquainted with this season. While Nebraska has squared off with every Big Ten member in its history, it has been a while since NU has played any of its new conference members. Nebraska s last contest with a Big Ten team was a loss to Minnesota on Dec. 8, In fact, current Big Ten members have only played at the Devaney Center 17 times since the facility opened in 1976 with the Gophers (seven times) and Michigan State (three times) accounting for more than half of the total. This season, Indiana, Michigan and Illinois all make their first-ever trips to the Devaney Center, leaving Northwestern as the only Big Ten team to never play the Huskers at the Devaney Center. NEBRASKA VS. THE BIG TEN School Meetings Last Matchup Illinois Indiana Iowa Michigan Michigan State Minnesota Northwestern Ohio State Penn State Purdue Wisconsin NOTING THE SCHEDULE With a new conference, including 18 Big Ten games, the Huskers will face a challenging road in Here are a couple of nuggets on the upcoming season slate. Nebraska will play 13 of its 29 games this season against teams that made the NCAA Tournament in In Big Ten action, seven squads qualified for the Big Dance, including No. 1 seed Ohio State, as the conference was second in the RPI. The Huskers will open their first season of Big Ten Conference action with six straight games against NCAA Tournament teams. Wake Forest becomes the first ACC member to visit Lincoln when the Demon Deacons come to the Devaney Center on Nov. 30, as part of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Huskers are 4-5 all-time against the ACC. The only time a current ACC member played in Lincoln was Miami in 1970, prior to the Hurricanes joining the ACC. Nebraska s three true road games in non-conference play (at USC, at Creighton, at TCU) equal the Huskers highest total since making four road trips in the season. Last year, Nebraska did not play a nonconference road game. The schedule features four first-time opponents: Rhode Island, Wake Forest, Florida Gulf Coast and Central Michigan. Wake Forest is Nebraska s first ACC opponent since the season. Nebraska s schedule features a new conference in the Big Ten with 18 conference games, compared to only 16 games in Big 12 action. The Huskers single-play opponents for the season are Indiana and Michigan at home and Northwestern and Purdue on the road. The Huskers will face the remaining seven teams (Wisconsin, Michigan State, Ohio State, Illinois, Iowa, Penn State and Minnesota) home and home. Every Nebraska game this year will be available on television or the internet, including 22 games broadcast nationally on the ESPN family of networks (ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU) or on the Big Ten Network. Nebraska will also have its non-conference road games against TCU (The Mountain), Creighton (KMTV) and USC (Prime Ticket) televised. In addition, all of the remaining games, including the Huskers exhibition game against Doane College, will air on BTN.com (subscription required). HUSKERS OPEN HENDRICKS TRAINING COMPLEX After 17 months of construction, the Hendricks Training Complex was opened on Oct. 13, The 84,000-square foot facility adjacent to the Bob Devaney Sports Center is the new home for the men s and women s basketball programs, as well as the wrestling program. The two-level facility includes separate practice courts for the men s and women s basketball programs, as well as expanded locker rooms, player lounges, team rooms and offices. Both the men s and women s basketball practice gyms are a court-and-half with six baskets, allowing additional work while the main floor is being used. The courts themselves are made with premium maple flooring with sleeper cushions that absorb shock to minimize injury. Both gyms have advanced acoustics as well as 103-inch plasma screens for breaking down film during practices. The men s practice court has been named in honor of Bus Whitehead, who led the Huskers to a pair of conference titles in 1949 and 1950 and passed away in June of A two-time all-conference performer, he was named captain of Nebraska s All-Century Team for his efforts on the court. Following his distinguished playing career, he started Whitehead Oil and was a strong supporter of the basketball programs. The amenities inside the facility are top of the line, as the main entrance features a two-story abstract net sculpture, as well as a granite fountain imported from China. The facility also features two video walls and 63 televisions throughout the building.
