Talley tied for the Big Ten lead in scoring by a reserve, averaging 8.9 points per game, as he was in double figures 11 times in his first season as a Husker. Talley has been a prolific scorer throughout his collegiate career, earning America East Conference Rookie-of-the-Year honors in , averaging 11.8 points per Big Ten Bench Scorers No. Player (School) PPG 1. RIvers Looks to Get into Offensive Flow Throughout the summer and the preseason, one Husker returnee who was flying under the radar was sophomore David Rivers. The 6-foot-7 wing totaled only 20 points and 16 rebounds in 19 contests as a freshman, but has added nearly 20 pounds since last year. The hard work in the weightroom showed during Nebraska s exhibition game, as he finished with nine points and five rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench. Rivers would have tied or set personal bests in both points and rebounds, while also going 4-for-4 from the foul line after shooting 40 percent from the line as a freshman. Will Eight Be Enough for the Huskers in Nebraska will likely have only eight scholarship players available for Sunday s opener with Southern, as Shavon Shields is out with an elbow injury and Deverell Biggs will redshirt this season. Of those eight scholarship players, a total which includes former walk-on Trevor Menke, only three saw action in NU s opener (Dylan Talley, Brandon Ubel and David Rivers). Shields to be Sidelined Nebraska Coach Tim Miles announced on Nov. 5, that Shavon Shields underwent surgery on Nov. 2 to clear up an infection that developed from a bursa sac rupture. Shields, who was one of the front runners for extensive playing time, has been limited in practice the last two weeks and could return to action later this month. Tall Tale When freshman Sergej Vucetic signed with Nebraska in early May, he was the first seven-footer to join the Husker program in over two decades. The last time NU had a seven-footer on the roster was during the season, when the Huskers had a pair of seven-footers in Rich King, who became a first round pick in the 1991 NBA Draft, and Kelly Lively. Husker Legacies The Huskers have a trio of players whose parents starred at either the collegiate or professional level. Freshman Shavon Shields is the son of former Husker and Kansas City Chiefs great Will Shields, who was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in December of 2011 and was enshrined last summer. Sophomore Jordan Tyrance is the son of a pair of former Husker standouts, as his father, Pat Tyrance Jr., was a two-time All-Big Eight linebacker and also an NCAA Today s Top Six Award winner, while his mother, Renita Robinson was a former NCAA Triple Jump Champion. In addition, sophomore David Rivers father played collegiately at Arkansas Little Rock for four seasons. Transfers Terran Petteway (Texas Tech) and Walter Pitchford (Florida) were part of Tim Miles first recruiting class, but both will sit out due to NCAA transfer rules. Both players will have three years of eligibility remaining beginning in the campaign. In addition, Miles announced on Nov. 5, that junior college transfer Deverell Biggs will redshirt this year. He will have two years of eligibility remaining beginning in Huskers to Host Joe Cipriano Nebraska Classic As the Nebraska basketball program begins its last season at the Devaney Center, one of the most memorable coaches in program history will be honored for his contributions, as Nebraska will host the Joe Cipriano Nebraska Classic. The Joe Cipriano Nebraska Classic will feature seven teams Nebraska, Kent State, Valparaiso, Tulane, Nebraska-Omaha, Bethune-Cookman and Chicago State playing four games each over a 10-day period from Nov. 15 to Nov. 24. The Devaney Center will serve as one of the four host sites, and the Huskers will take on Valparaiso (Nov. 15), Nebraska-Omaha (Nov. 18), Tulane (Nov. 21) and Kent State (Nov. 24). The event honors the many contributions of Joe Cipriano to the Nebraska basketball program. He served as the Huskers head coach from 1963 until 1980, when he died of cancer just four days short of the start of his 18th season. His teams at Nebraska posted a record and made three postseason appearances. He was a three-time Big Eight Coach of the Year (1967, 1978 and 1980), and his 253 wins at the time of his death were 167 more than any previous basketball head coach at Nebraska.
