PROBABLE STARTERS Game Notes Media Relations Contact: Shamus McKnight Office: Cell: NebraskaBasketball HuskerHoops The Huskers (14-10, 6-6 B1G) are playing some of their best basketball over the last three weeks, culminating with a win at ninth-ranked Michigan State on Sunday. Sophomores Walter Pitchford and Terran Petteway combined for 41 points, but Nebraska did its best work on the defensive end. The Huskers held the Spartans to season lows in both points (51) and field-goal percentage (.340), as MSU was held over 25 points below its season average. Nebraska s improved defense has keyed the surge in recent weeks. During its current three-game win streak, Nebraska is holding foes to 52.7 points per game and 36 percent shooting from the floor. It has helped NU rally from a 1-5 confernece start to a.500 mark in Big Ten play entering the final three weeks of the season. Penn State (13-13, 4-9 B1G) has also rebounded from a rocky start of Big Ten play in recent weeks. The Nittany Lions have won four of their last seven games since a four-point win over the Huskers in Happy Valley on Jan. 23, including road wins at both Ohio State and Indiana. The Nittany Lions feature one of the Big Ten s best backcourts in Tim Frazier and D.J. Newbill, who combine for nearly 33 points, 10 rebounds and 7.7 assists per game NEBRASKA SCHEDULE Date Opponent Time/Result Nov. 8 Florida Gulf Coast (BTN) W, Nov. 12 Western Illinois (BTDN) W, Nov. 17 South Carolina State (BTDN) W, at Charleston Classic Nov. 21 vs. UMass (ESPN3) L, Nov. 22 vs. UAB (ESPN3) L, Nov. 24 vs. Georgia (ESPN3) W, Nov. 30 Northern Illinois (BTDN) W, Dec. 4 Miami (ESPNU) W, Dec. 8 at Creighton (Fox Sports 1) L, Dec. 14 Arkansas State (BTN) W, Dec. 21 The Citadel (BTDN) W, Dec. 28 at Cincinnati (ESPN2) L, Dec. 31 at No. 22 Iowa # (BTN) L, Jan. 4 at No. 3 Ohio State # (BTN) L, Jan. 9 Michigan # (ESPN2) L, Jan. 12 at Purdue # (BTN) L, Jan. 20 No. 17 Ohio State # (BTN) W, Jan. 23 at Penn State # (ESPNU) L, Jan. 26 Minnesota #(BTN) W, Jan. 30 Indiana #(BTN) W, Feb. 5 at No. 10 Michigan # (BTN) L, Feb. 8 at Northwestern # (ESPNU) W, Feb. 12 Illinois # (BTN) W, Feb. 16 at No. 9 Michigan State # (BTN) W, Feb. 20 Penn State # (ESPNU) 6 p.m. Feb. 23 Purdue # (BTN) 3:15 p.m. Feb. 26 at Illinois # (BTN) 8 p.m. March 1 Northwestern # (ESPNU) 4 p.m. March 5 at Indiana # (BTN) 6 p.m. March 9 Wisconsin # (BTN) 6:30 p.m. March at Big Ten Tournament TBA 0 - WEBSTER 4.7 ppg, 2.2 rpg, 2.2 apg 2 - RIVERS 2.2 ppg, 2.3 rpg NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS Record: 14-10, 6-6 Big Ten Head coach: Tim Miles Record at Nebraska: (2nd year) Career Record: (19th year) PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS Record: 13-13, 4-9 Big Ten Head Coach: Patrick Chambers Record at Penn State: (3rd year) Career Record: (5th year) 5 - PETTEWAY 17.7 ppg, 5.2 rpg, 1.6 apg 31 - SHIELDS 11.8 ppg, 5.4 rpg, 1.6 apg 35 - PITCHFORD 9.0 ppg, 4.3 rpg #-Big Ten Conference game; BTDN - Big Ten Digital Network (online) All times are Central and times and dates are subject to change. The Nittany Lions have been played some their best basketball in recent weeks, going 4-3 after an 0-6 Big Ten start for third-year coach Pat Chambers. PSU has been resilient, posting road wins at both Ohio State and Indiana, as they rallied from late deficits in both contests. The Nittany Lions feature one of the highestscoring backcourts in the country in fifth-year senior Tim Frazier and junior D.J. Newbill. Frazier averages 15.9 points and a Big Ten-leading 5.9 assists per game, while Newbill is fourth in the conference in scoring at 17.4 points per game. On the inside, Brandon Taylor is averaging 9.7 points per game with a team-high 38 3-pointers, while Ross Travis averages 9.3 points and a team-best 6.8 rebounds per game. NU-PENN STATE SERIES HISTORY Thursday s game is only the ninth meeting between the Huskers and Nittany Lions - the two most recent members of the Big Ten - and Nebraska has won three of the five matchups since joining the conference prior to the season. The series is deadlocked at four wins apiece. The teams played three times before Nebraska joined the Big Ten, a home-and-home series in 1980 and 1981 and in the second round of the 1995 NIT. Last Meeting: A late comeback by Penn State spoiled a golden opportunity for the Huskers, as the Nittany Lions posted a win. Nebraska led with 2:24 left, but Penn State closed the game on an 11-3 run to earn their first conference win. The Huskers Penn State Probable Starters stats No. Name Pos. Yr. Ht. Pts. Rbs* 2 D.J. LAST TIME OUT Terran Petteway and Walter Pitchford pushed Nebraska to one historic win. Petteway scored 23 points, Pitchford had 18 and the Cornhuskers beat Michigan State to get to.500 in the Big Ten for the first time since joining the conference. It also was Nebraska s first Big Ten win over Michigan State. The Cornhuskers have won three straight conference games for the first time since the season. Gary Harris had 18 points on 5-for-15 shooting and Adreian Payne scored 11 for Michigan State, which lost out on an opportunity to move a game ahead of No. 15 Michigan in the conference race. 5 5 NEBRASKA BASKETBALL off a second-half surge by closing the game with a 9-2 run. It was Michigan State s first loss to Nebraska since Dec. 10, 1994, when the Cornhuskers rallied for a overtime victory over the 15th-ranked Spartans. Michigan State had won six of seven against Nebraska in East Lansing. Nebraska outhustled the Spartans for most of the game, helping the Cornhuskers make up for their own shaky offensive performance. They shot 36 percent (19 for 53) from the field. After Payne s layup pulled Michigan State to 51-49, the Spartans grabbed a defensive rebound and called timeout with their crowd roaring. Kenny Kaminski then air-balled a 3 from the left wing and Petteway made a contested 3 on the other end. Michigan State got off to a slow start but put together a 12-0 run to take a lead. But that would be the biggest advantage for the Spartans. Petteway was 7 for 17 from the field and Pitchford went 6 for 12 for Nebraska. No other Cornhusker had more than two baskets. But with just five turnovers, it was an afternoon to remember. STORY LINES The Huskers will be looking for their fourth straight conference win, the first time that has happened for the Huskers since the season (Colorado, Missouri, Kansas and Iowa State). Nebraska looks to improve to a Big Ten-best 12-1 in its first season at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Dating back to last season, the Huskers have won 13 of their last 14 home games with the only loss coming to now No. 20 Michigan on Jan. 9. Nebraska is bidding for its sixth Big Ten win in the last seven games, which would be a first for the program since the season when Nebraska went 9-1 in a stretch during Big 12 action. The Huskers are gunning for their seventh conference win of the season, which would be the most since going 7-9 in the school s final Big 12 season in NU would also be over.500 at any point in conference play for the first time since Jan. 8, 2011, when the Huskers won their Big 12 opener. The last time NU was over.500 this late in the conference season was in , when Nebraska was 7-6 on Feb. 22 after a win over Colorado. A win on Thursday would be the Huskers 15th of the season, matching the entire total. Nebraska would regain the all-time series lead with Penn State with a victory on Thursday Sophomore Terran Petteway is 16 points away from tying Carl McPipe for fifth place on Nebraska s sophomore scoring chart. Petteway has eight 20-point games this season, which is the most since Bo Spencer had nine during the season. Ray Gallegos can move into seventh on NU s career 3-point list with his first 3-pointer against Penn State on Thursday. He is WORTH NOTING VS. MICHIGAN STATE Nebraska s win was just the fourth in school history over a top-10 team away from Lincoln and the first since a win at No. 7 Iowa State on Feb. 22, It snapped a 29-game losing streak against top-10 teams away from Lincoln. Nebraska snapped a 21-game losing streak to ranked teams on the road, dating back to a win at No. 22 Texas A&M and Feb.23, NU improved to 6-6 in Big Ten play, the first time since joining the Big Ten that Nebraska has been.500 at any point in conference play. NU picked up its first Big Ten win against Michigan State, snapping a four-game losing streak to the Spartans. I ve made the very difficult decision that Deverell Biggs will no longer be a part of our basketball program. We have consistently emphasized accountability for our student-athletes on the court, off the court and in the classroom. Individual accountability affects the entire group. As a basketball program, we are moving forward and perhaps a fresh start for Deverell may be beneficial to him as well. Deverell will still have access to all of our academic resources to maintain his eligibility and progress toward graduation. Deverell is a good young man. My hope is that he remains at Nebraska and finishes his classes this spring and finds another program where he can flourish. We wish him all the best. Biggs appeared in 15 games for the Huskers this season, averaging 9.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists per contest after redshirting in
