Pitchford, a 6-foot-10 junior, poured in a career-high 19 points, including 6-of-10 from 3-point range, to break out of early-season doldrums. All-Big Ten performer Terran Petteway added 18 points and dished out a career high eight assists for Nebraska, which extended its home win streak to 12 games. Pitchford got the Huskers off to a blistering start, hitting his first three 3-pointers, as Nebraska opened the game by connecting on its first six shots from the field, including five 3-pointers, to build a lead in the first five minutes. UT Martin roared back behind the shooting of Twymond Howard, who had six points in a 14-6 run as the visitors took a lead after a pair of free throws by Myles Taylor with 6:36 left in the half From that point, the Huskers (4-1) took control on the defensive end, holding UT Martin to one field goal the remainder of the half and using a 17-3 run to build a 13-point halftime cushion. NU s bench keyed the run, as Tai Webster, Tarin Smith and Moses Abraham combined for 11 points in the surge, as Smith s driving basket beat the first half buzzer and ending a run of seven straight Husker points. With the Huskers holding a lead early in the second half, Benny Parker keyed a 9-0 Husker run, as the junior scored five points, staking the Huskers to their largest lead of the night, at with 14:09 left. UT Martin (3-2) came right back, using a 12-0 run to pull whittle a 16-point lead to after Devellie Smith s 3-pointer with 9:14 left. The Huskers than regrouped around its veterans, as two Petteway jumpers and a bucket by David Rivers extended the lead to double figures at with 7:49 left. The Skyhawks continued to battle behind the long-range shooting of Deville Smith. who had 12 of his 15 points in the second half. The Huskers kept UT-Martin at bay with strong foul shooting, going 11-of-13 from the line in the second half as the visitors were unable to cut Nebraska s lead to less than seven points in the final eight minutes. NOTES FROM FRIDAY S WIN The attendance of 15,987 against UT Martin was the second-largest crowd at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Walter Pitchford set career bests in points (19) and 3-pointer (6). His previous career high in points was 18 at Michigan State on Feb. 16, His previous best in 3-pointers was four also against the Spartans. Terran Petteway s eight assists was not only a career high (previous high was four at Northwestern on Feb. 8, 2014), but the most by a Husker since Bo Spencer had nine against Central Michigan on Dec. 20, NU s 10 3-pointers was a season best and the most since hitting 11 against Minnesota on Jan. 26, 2014 Nebraska has now 11 straight at home and is 19-1 since moving into Pinnacle Bank Arena. Nebraska s bench outscored UT Martin, 18-4, including a season high seven points from Moses Abraham. Benny Parker also matched his career high with nine points on Friday. THE ACC/BIG TEN CHALLENGE The season marks the 16th season of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The ACC won the first 10 editions of the event before the Big Ten won the next three challenges. For the last two years, the teams split the 12 matchups, allowing the Big Ten to retain the cup for a fifth straight season. The winner of the event receives the Commissioner s Cup. In the event of a 7-7 tie this year, the Commissioner s Cup will remain with the conference that won the previous year. Since 2000, the ACC (10) and the Big Ten (12) have combined for 22 Final Four appearances and six national titles: North Carolina (2005 and 2009), Maryland (2002), Duke (2001 and 2010) and Michigan State & ON ON TWITTER /NEBRASKABASKETBALL ON ON FACEBOOK IG: IG: HUSKERHOOPS

5 UP FOR THE CHALLENGE This the eighth consecutive year that Nebraska has appeared in a conference challenge event. Prior to joining the Big Ten in , the Huskers went 3-1 in the Big 12/Pac-10 Hardwood Series, equaling the best performance by a Big 12 school in the event during the event s four-year tenure. NU is one of four Big Ten programs with a winning record in the event, joining Ohio State, Purdue and Big Ten newcomer Maryland, which was 10-5 when representing the ACC. PETTEWAY AND SHIELDS CARRY HUSKER ATTACK Nebraska features two of the Big Ten s most dynamic wing players in juniors Terran Petteway and Shavon Shields. Although we are just five games into the season, the pair has been a prolific scoring duo, combining for 40 points per game and ranking among the Big Ten s top five scorers. In Nebraska s 119-year history, only five duos have combined to average more than 36 points per game. SHOWING COMEBACK Nebraska showed its ability to come back against Omaha on Tuesday. The Huskers trailed 23-7 in the first five minutes before regrouping in the win. The 16-point deficit Nebraska overcame was the third double-digit comeback for the Huskers under Tim Miles and the first since also overcoming a 16-point deficit to Indiana last season. The largest comeback under Miles came during the season when the Huskers trailed by 19 against Iowa before rallying for a victory. DEFENSE KEYS HUSKER TURNAROUND Nebraska s turnaround last year was keyed by an emphasis on the defensive end of the court and that has continued during the early portion of the season. The Huskers entered Big Ten play last in field goal defense and eighth in scoring defense, but dramatically improved during conference action. Over the final 16 games of the , NU held 10 opponents below 40 percent shooting from the field, including eight straight foes in one stretch. The eight consecutive foes under 40 percent was the longest streak by a Husker defense in at least four decades. The Huskers finished Big Ten play second in conference games in field goal percentage (.415) and third in scoring defense (63.4). In , the Huskers have continued to shine on the defensive end, holding its first five opponents to a combined 38 percent shooting and 62.8 points per game. Nebraska is 24-6 over the past three seasons when holding opponents to under 40 percent shooting. Nebraska climbed from 102nd in defensive efficiency to 25th in and is currently 24th entering Monday s game at Florida State. Nebraska has held each of its first five opponents this season to under a point per possession. Nebraska has been stout at home over the last two seasons, as only three teams have shot over 45 percent against the Huskers, while 11 of 20 opponents have been held to under 40 percent shooting. Northern Kentucky shot just 36 percent while Central Arkansas was held to 33 percent. PETTEWAY LEADS HUSKER RETURNEES Junior wing Terran Petteway comes into as one of the nation s premier players. The 6-foot-6 junior wing has been featured on several lists of top players in college basketball and was chosen second-team preseason All-American by The Sporting News and CBSSports.com. As a sophomore, he led the Big Ten in scoring at 18.1 points per game while adding 4.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per contest, while starting all 32 contests. Not only did he lead the Huskers in scoring, but also was second on the team in rebounding and third in assists. Early on, Petteway has been a force for the Huskers, ranking third in the Big Ten in scoring at 20.2 points per game while adding 5.6 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.6 blocks per game. In addition to scoring, he is seventh in the Big Ten in 3-pointers per game and ninth in blocked shots. He followed up with a 23-point effort against Central Arkansas and collected his third career double double with 20 points and a career-high 12 rebounds against Omaha. Petteway had 18 points and dished out a career-high eight assists against Tennessee-Martin on Friday night. Petteway has been in double figures in 16 consecutive games dating back to last year and 35 of 37 career games at Nebraska. He has three 20-point games in , including a season-high 25 points against Northern Kentucky, and has 15 career games at NU with 20 or more points. With 680 points over the last two years at Nebraska, his career scoring average of 18.4 points per game is second only to Dave Hoppen (19.5 ppg) Petteway looks to become the first player since Ohio State s Evan Turner ( ) to lead the Big Ten in scoring in consecutive seasons. Over the last 30 years, only three players - Turner, Purdue s Glenn Robinson ( ) and Michigan s Glen Rice ( ) - have accomplished the feat. On Nov. 16, he was chosen for the Wooden Award Men s Preseason Top 50. Chosen by a preseason poll of national college basketball experts, the list is comprised of 50 student-athletes who are the early front-runners for the sport s most prestigious honor. Petteway is the first Husker on the list since Aleks Maric in the season. Earlier this week, he was named to the Oscar Robertson and Lute Olson Player of the Year watch lists. Nebraska has had eight All-Americans in program history, most recently Carl McPipe during the season. Last season, Petteway became the first player to earn unanimous first-team all-conference honors since Venson Hamilton in 1999, and also earned first-team all-district honors by the NABC (coaches) and the U.S. Basketball Writers Association (writers). Petteway finished Big Ten play as the conference scoring leader, averaging 18.6 points per game. He became the fifth Husker in the last century to lead a conference in scoring in conference games and first since former Big Eight Player of the Year Andre Smith in He also led the conference at 18.1 points per game in all games and became the first Husker since 1950 (first year the Big Seven Conference kept records) to ever lead the league in scoring for all games. SHIELDS KEYS HUSKER ATTACK While Petteway was one of the best players in the Big Ten last season, Shavon Shields may be one of the most underrated players in the Big Ten. The 6-foot-7 wing started all 32 games and averaged 12.8 points, 5.8 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game to earn honorable-mention All-Big Ten honors from the coaches and media. As a sophomore, Shields was second on the team in scoring and led Nebraska in rebounding. This season, Shields has continued his emergence, averaging 19.8 points on 60 percent shooting and 7.1 rebounds per game. He is third in the Big Ten in scoring, ninth in rebounding and 10th in field goal percentage entering Monday s game at Florida State. He was held to five points and four rebounds on Friday, snapping a streak of nine straight games in double figures. Over his last 10 games dating back to last year, Shields is averaging 18.7 points per game on 55 percent shooting along with 6.8 rebounds per game. His 35 point effort against Omaha tied for the most in a Big Ten game this year and ties for 10th in school history. It was Shields' second career 30-point game, as he had 33 against Illinois in With his 35-point game against UNO, along with his 33-point effort against Illinois last season, Shields is one of only 14 players in school history - including Petteway - with multiple 30-point games in school history. Collected his fourth career double-double against Central Arkansas with 16 points - all in the first half - and 11 rebounds while matching his career best with four assists. Scored 18 points on just four field goal attempts, hitting all four shots from the floor while going 10-of-10 from the charity stripe. It was the third time in his career he has gone 10-of-10 or better from the foul line in a game. Shields is one of four returnees to rank in the top 15 in both scoring and rebounding in Big Ten play last year, joining Frank Kaminsky (Wisconsin), Rayvonte Rice (Illinois) and Aaron White (Iowa). Has started a team-high 55 consecutive games dating back to his freshman year. Last season, Shields played some of his best basketball since moving to his natural wing position in February, averaging 15.7 points and 6.0 rebounds per game while shooting 49 percent from the field over NU s last 12 contests. The Huskers went 8-4 over that stretch. Shields earned Big Ten Co-Player of the Week for his efforts during the last week of the season, averaging 21.5 points per game in wins over Indiana and Wisconsin, as he had 26 points against the ninth-ranked Badgers and 17 points and eight rebounds in the win at Indiana. His best offensive effort came against Illinois on Feb. 12, when he scored a seasonhigh 33 points, hitting 8-of-12 shots from the field and all 15 of his free throws. Shields tied Nebraska s single-game record for free throws without a miss and became only the 11th Big Ten player to hit at least 15 free throws without a miss and the first since & ON ON TWITTER /NEBRASKABASKETBALL ON ON FACEBOOK IG: IG: HUSKERHOOPS

7 PITCHFORD POSES PROBLEMS FOR OPPONENTS Junior forward Walter Pitchford became one of the focal points to the Huskers attack in Big Ten play last season. The 6-foot-10, 237-pounder is one of the toughest matchups in college basketball, as he is a skilled shooter who hit 41 percent from 3-point range. Last season, Pitchford averaged 9.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game while starting 31 games. An outstanding athlete with a 42-inch vertical leap, Pitchford played some of his best basketball of the season over the Huskers second-half surge, averaging 11.0 points per game on 53 percent shooting over the last 14 games. Pitchford reached double figures 11 times in that stretch including a career-high 18-point effort along with five rebounds and a pair of steals in a win at No. 9 Michigan State on Feb. 16. Pitchford sparked NU s win at Indiana with 17 points and nine rebounds, as he scored the Huskers first nine points and then delivered a 3-pointer with 1:55 left to give Nebraska a four-point cushion. Pitchford, who was averaging just 3.5 points per game on 21 percent shooting in his first four games, broke out against Tennessee-Martin on Friday. The junior set personal bests in both points (19) and 3-pointers (six) in the Huskers 11-point win. Despite his offensive struggles early, Pitchford found other ways to make an impact. Against Northern Kentucky, he had four rebounds and matched his career high with three blocked shots in 26 minutes of work and had four rebounds in 20 minutes vs. Central Arkansas. OLD MAN RIVERS Senior forward David Rivers has been through a lot during his Nebraska career. The 6-foot-7 forward signed when Nebraska was still a member of the Big 12 Conference back in the fall of 2010, and has quietly developed during the last three seasons under Tim Miles. This season, Rivers is averaging 6.4 points per game while 71 percent from the field and 4.4 rebounds per game. He scored a season-high 12 points in the season opener against Northern Kentucky on Nov. 16 and led NU with six rebounds vs. UT-Martin. Rivers, who averaged 3.0 points per game as a junior, has also raised his shooting percentage during each of his last three seasons. CHARTING RIVERS Year Pct POINT GUARD BY COMMITTEE The Huskers have relied on a three-man rotation at the point guard spot early in The trio of Tai Webster, Benny Parker and Tarin Smith have combined for 18.6 points, 5.4 assists and 5.2 rebounds. Webster, who has started the first three games, has seen his scoring average climb jump from 3.9 points to 8.0 points per game, while averaging 1.4 steals per game. Parker, who averaged just 2.6 points over his first two years, is at 6.6 points per game while leading NU in steals (1.6 per game) and ranking second in assists. Parker has moved into the starting role the last two games and is averaging 7.0 points and 2.5 assists per game in that span and matched his career high with nine points against UT-Martin on Friday. Smith is chipping in 4.0 points and 1.4 assists per game while committing one turnover in 73 minutes of action. NEW FACES IN HUSKERS ROTATION Despite having five returning starters and seven of the top eight players back from a year ago (counting Leslee Smith, who looks to return from knee surgery during Big Ten play), a pair of newcomers - senior Moses Abraham and freshman Tarin Smith - have found their way into the Huskers rotation. Abraham is a graduate transfer who spent the past four years at Georgetown. He provided physicality in the wake of Leslee Smith s injury and is the first post player off the bench. He is averaging 6.0 rebounds and 2.0 points per game, while playing just 14.6 minutes per game. He provided a spark off the bench against UT Martin with seven points and five rebounds. Abraham has had at least five rebounds in all five contest this season. Against Omaha, he had seven rebounds and a pair of blocked shots in a season-high 17 minutes. He also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked a shot in 15 minutes at Rhode Island and had six rebounds in just 10 minutes of work against Central Arkansas. Last year, Abraham averaged 1.9 points and 2.8 rebounds per game while ranking second on the team with 23 blocked shots. The 6-foot-9, 252-pound forward earned his degree from Georgetown in May and has one year of eligibility remaining. He is the first graduate transfer the Huskers have added since the rule went into effect. Smith has become one of the Huskers first guards off the bench during the preseason and averages 4.0 points and 1.4 assists per game. His best game came against Northern Kentucky when he had six points and an assist in 16 minutes of work and he had three points and three assists in the loss at Rhode Island. Smith was a two-year starter at St. Anthony (N.J.) High School, one of the premier high school basketball programs in the country playing for Hall of Fame Coach Bob Hurley. As a senior, he was a first-team all-state pick by the AP and a third-team honoree by the Newark Star-Ledger, as he averaged 15 points, four rebounds and four assists per game, as St. Anthony finished with a 25-5 record and a state runner-up finish. Another freshman who could see more action as the year progresses is post player Jake Hammond. He is a 6-foot- 10, 230-pound forward who averaged 26.2 points, 14.8 rebounds, 5.7 blocks and 3.1 steals per game as a senior at Comanche (Okla.) High School. He was rated as the No. 2 prospect in the state of Oklahoma by both ESPN.com and 247Sports as a senior, and was considered one of the top 150 seniors in the country by Hoop Scoop. In addition, two other Husker newcomers will not suit up this season, as freshman B.J. Day will not play after suffering a torn ACL in practice in October, while Andrew White is sitting out the season after transferring from Kansas. White, who was a top-50 recruit coming out of high school, played two seasons at Kansas, playing behind NBA lottery picks Andrew Wiggins (2014) and Ben McLemore (2013). White was the state player of the year in Virginia in 2012, averaging 22.9 points and 10 rebounds per game as a senior. He will have two years of eligibility remaining. In addition to the players who were in Lincoln, several others represented the program and their respective home countries. Tai Webster: Played for the New Zealand National Team over the summer, including the FIBA World Cup in Spain. He joined the team for its pre-tournament tour, playing in 12 of 13 games before the FIBA World Cup, where he helped New Zealand reach the round of 16. He averaged 5.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game despite being the fourth-youngest player in the tournament, finishing second among all teenagers in both points per game and assists per game. Webster had eight points, seven rebounds and three assists in a win over the Ukraine and added seven points and five rebounds against Turkey. Against Team USA, he had four points and a pair of blocked shots in 15 minutes against the eventual gold medalists. Leslee Smith: Represented the British Virgin Islands at the 2014 FIBA Caribbean Basketball Championships in Tortola, British Virgin Islands. HUSKERS AMONG THE RANKED For the first time in two decades, the Huskers were in the national polls, as Nebraska opened the season ranked 21st in both the AP and Coaches poll. It marked the first time since Jan. 2, 1995, that Nebraska is nationally ranked and just the second time in AP poll history and first since 1992 that the Huskers opened the season as a ranked team. Nebraska is now (.667) when ranked all-time in program history following Saturday s overtime loss at Rhode Island, as the Huskers fell out of the poll on Monday. In addition to the AP and Coaches polls, other publications have taken notice of the Huskers as well. While the Big Ten only releases the top three teams in its preseason poll (Wisconsin, Ohio State and Michigan State), the league s beat writers do an informal poll where the Huskers were picked fourth. The Huskers were picked 12th (among 12 teams at the time) in the preseason in both and , and finished 10th and fourth, respectively. In other preseason publications, Nebraska was picked as high as second (Athlon) to as low as sixth (ESPN). In all, the Husker coaching staff now includes a pair of coaches with over 300 wins apiece in Molinari and Head Coach Tim Miles, the reigning Big Ten Coach of the Year. One of the most well-respected teachers in college basketball, Molinari brings over three decades of Division I coaching experience to Nebraska, including 20 years of head coaching experience. He is a three-time conference coach of the year during his career, while he has guided nine teams to postseason play. In addition, he has been a member of 10 NCAA Tournament staffs during his 12 seasons as a Division I assistant coach. Prior to joining the staff, he served as head coach at Western Illinois for the past six seasons. He replaced Craig Smith, who was named head coach at South Dakota in April. Other changes on the staff included moving Teddy Owens to director of basketball operations and the hiring of Brett Sapp (administrative coordinator) and Ali Farokhmanesh (graduate manager). It is only the eighth time since 2000 that a school has increased its attendance average by at least 5,000 fans per game from the previous season. The Huskers rewarded the fans by going 15-1 in the first season at Pinnacle Bank Arena, its best home mark since the campaign. For the season, ticket renewals were above 97 percent while the Red Zone season tickets were completely sold out in May. Nebraska s attendance of 15,479 against Northern Kentucky was the largest season-opening crowd in program history. The previous mark was 15,119 against Florida Gulf Coast in SENIOR SMARTS All five members of the Husker senior class are on track to receive their degree during the season. QUICK NOTES Under Tim Miles, one major emphasis is taking care of the basketball, and the Huskers have been solid at that over the last two years. NU s two lowest turnover averages in school history have come under Tim Miles, as NU finished 10th nationally with 10.7 turnovers per game in and averaged 10.9 turnovers per game last season. The Huskers are commiting 15.3 turnovers per game in the early going this season. Terran Petteway s 18.1 ppg scoring average is the highest by a Husker returnee since Aleks Maric averaged 18.5 ppg as a junior. Since World War II, only six returnees have averaged more points per game than Petteway s sophomore season (Aleks Maric, Tyronn Lue, Dave Hoppen, Andre Smith, Jerry Fort and Stu Lantz). With the return of Petteway and junior wing Shavon Shields (12.8 ppg), Nebraska welcomes back a pair of double-figure scorers for the first time since the season and for only the third time since 2000.

In , Miles was named Big Ten Coach of the Year and Jim Phalen National Coach of the Year after guiding the Huskers to an 11-7 Big Ten mark and a fourth-place finish after the team was picked to finish 12th in the preseason. NU s 11 conference wins were its highest total since , while the fourth-place finish was the Huskers best since After a 1-5 conference start, Nebraska won 10 of its last 12 conference games, including a pair of wins over top-10 teams, en route to the school s first NCAA appearance in 16 seasons.
