The contest was originally scheduled to serve as a Homecoming for senior Christy Marshall, a product of Savannah s Beach High School; however, Marshall suffered a season-ending knee injury in a workout two days before the opening of fall practices. Georgia is currently 12-0, equaling the Final Four campaign as the fourth-best start in Andy Landers 31 seasons in Athens. More impressive than the record is the route in which Georgia has progressed to the mark. The Lady Bulldogs have vanquished a quartet of 2009 NCAA Tournament participants No. 13 Oklahoma, Rutgers, No. 23 Georgia Tech and No. 19 Virginia and topped a fourth foe Chattanooga that has appeared in seven of the last nine editions of March Madness. The other seven opponents have been dispatched by an average of 23.6 points per game. Georgia is now two Ws shy of equaling the best start in the program s history, a 14-0 mark to christen the Final Four season. The Lady Bulldogs are looking to equal the second-best start of 13-0 in both and Lady Bulldog headlines... The Lady Bulldogs raced to a halftime lead and never looked back. Angel Robinson and Ashley Houts combined for 35 points to lead Georgia. A complete box score from that outing as well as game-by-game results in the series can be found on Page 3 of these Game Notes. In the last matchup in Savannah on Dec. 15, 2006, Rebecca Rowsey s career-high 15 points paced the Lady Bulldogs en route to a win. Athens native and Cedar Shoals grad Ivy Smith poured in a game-high 21 points to lead the Tigers. There s another historic note associated with the series. Georgia secured a victory on Dec. 10, 2005 a school-record 72-point victory margin of victory. Last time out... Georgia held the Tigers to just 28.8 percent shooting from the floor and out-rebounded Clemson, Defensively, they understand it, they re comfortable with it and they play hard, Andy Landers said. I think those are some of our problems on the offensive end. We still don t understand it and we re not real comfortable with it. We are playing hard, which is very important. I m confident it will come offensively. It s just going to take time. Defensively, we were very, very good. We also rebounded the ball very well, especially in the first half. Anne Marie Armstrong scored all seven of her points over a span of just 2:16 midway through the first half as the Lady Bulldogs gained a lead with 5:02 left in the opening period. After leading at the intermission, Georgia held Clemson to just five points in the first 9:50 of the second half as the Lady Bulldogs pushed their advantage to The Tigers closed within five points on a Lele Hardy three-pointer with 6:31 remaining, but Houts and Robinson combined to score five straight and push the margin back to double digits. 1 Ashley Houts G 5-6 Jr. Trenton, Ga. With a victory, Georgia would post just its fourth-ever perfect non-conference regular-season record. The Lady Bulldogs were 14-0 against non-sec competition during the regular season, notched a 15-0 non-conference mark in the regular season and compiled an 18-0 mark during the regular season. FYI, Georgia s longest regular-season non-conference winning streak is 33 games in a stretch dating from Dec. 29, 1988-Dec. 21, Some stifiling D Georgia s Lady Bulldogs and Savannah State s Tigers are two of the top defensive teams in the nation. In the latest NCAA statistics compiled through games played on Dec. 20, Savannah State ranked No. 2 in the nation in scoring defense (51.0), No. 2 in field goal percentage defense (.312) and No. 1 in three-point defense (.191). In those same statistical rankings, Georgia was listed at No. 9 in scoring defense (51.2) and No. 10 in field goal percentage defense (.331). The Lady Bulldogs rank just No. 111 (.330) in three-point defense, however.

3 Lady Bulldogs vs. Savannah State Game Notes Page 3 Lady Dogs return to AP top-10 Georgia inched up two spots to No. 9 in the Dec. 21 edition of the Associated Press top-25 poll...a position common for Lady Bulldog Basketball historically if not of late. The ranking represented the Lady Bulldogs first appearance in the top-10 in just under two years. Georgia was ranked No. 10 in the Jan. 7, 2008, edition of the poll before losing to and dropping to No. 12 the following week. Georgia has been a mainstay of both the Associated Press poll and the top-10. The Lady Bulldogs now have been included in 439 weekly polls, a tally that ranks third nationally. During those appearances, Georgia has been included in the top-10 for 254 weeks and in the top five for 145 weeks. Hassell to the rescue For much of the Detroit game, Jasmine Hassell was a one-woman wrecking crew. Hassell, whose career-high entering the game was six points, scored 14 points in just 13 minutes of action against the Titans. We ve been saying she s terrific and it s true, Andy Landers said. She s coming along. She s not there yet, but she is definitely getting closer every time we play, and you can see it. Hassell was the lone Lady Bulldog to shoot the ball well against Detroit. Subtract out her 6-of-9 (.667) effort from the field and the rest of the Georgia roster was a combined 18-of-65 (.277) versus the Titans. JJ SEC FOW for third time Jasmine James was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week on Dec. 21, the third time in six weeks that the Memphis native was honored as such. A day earlier, James recorded team highs of 17 points, 10 rebounds and three steals to lead Georgia to a decisive victory over No. 19 Virginia in the Lady Dogs only game that week. She notched career-high tallies in rebounds, steals and minutes played (37) and posted her first career double-double. James also was named SEC Freshman of the Week on Nov. 16 and Nov. 30. James was honored initially after scoring a team- Tradition ALWAYS graduates to the tune of 102% There s a common catch phrase used by numerous college athletic teams: Tradition Never Graduates. Well, with Lady Bulldog Basketball, that saying has been altered to Tradition ALWAYS Graduates. During his 30 seasons at Georgia, Andy Landers has coached 54 four-year letterwinners. Only one of those players, 2009 senior Danielle Taylor, has not earned her degree from the UGA. Taylor, a Social Work major, is spending this year completing a year-long internship she could not undertake while still playing basketball and will receive her degree in May Landers only two non-graduating four-year letterwinners other than Taylor completed their degrees in Kedra Holland-Corn (above left with Landers) secured her degree in sociology in May, while Lady (Hardmon) Grooms received her diploma in recreation and leisure studies in August. Adding to the impressive ledger is the fact Tina Taylor actually received three degrees while she was at UGA for six years of eligibility due to knee injuries. Taylor earned her bachelor s in accounting in four years, added a second degree in finance in her fifth year and received a master s in accounting in the final year in Athens. To calculate Landers unofficial graduation rate, we feel strongly that he should be awarded extra credit for the extra degrees Taylor earned while eligible to compete. Therefore, 54 four-year Lady Bulldogs possess a total of 55 diplomas from the University of Georgia, giving Landers a graduation rate of 102 percent! That tally doesn t even include the degree in child & family development fifth-year senior and three-year letterwinner Angel Robinson (above right with Landers) has already earned. Robinson is now pursuing a master s in adult education. high 15 points in Georgia s upset of No. 13 Oklahoma in the season opener, and she was selected again after averaging 19.7 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.0 assists in a trio of victories over State, Texas A&M- Corpus Christi and Southern Miss. Five different Lady Bulldogs have combined to win SEC Freshman of the Week honors 12 times since the award was introduced in 2006, including current Georgia players Ashley Houts, Angel Robinson and the injured Christy Marshall. Robinson also moved to No. 6 on the Georgia career blocks leaders ledger in a day full of milestones against the Jackets. In the Clemson victory, Robinson passed Tracy Henderson and moved to No. 10 in career rebounds in Lady Bulldog annals. A coach s dream to date Nurturing development and improvement is perhaps the top goal of every coach at every level. That s why Andy Landers had a little extra spring in his step this fall. Landers knew the coming months offered him a coach s dream. You re challenged by the idea that you can get better every day, Landers said. This is a team that absolutely can improve every single game right up the end of the season because there s so many young people with so much to learn. You re not going to get it in a game. You re not going to get it in the first half of the season. It s going to be an ongoing process. We have to be as coaches good communicators with young people so that they know they understand what they are getting right and how to build on that and what needs to be corrected so that they can make those corrections. A dozen games into the campaign, Landers has been, for the most part, extremely pleased with what he s seen. Everybody has done certain things well, which is very pleasing, Landers said after defeating Southern Miss in the title tilt of the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic. I continue to be pleased with our veterans and the example they set. They are doing a good job incorporating and encouraging our younger players in what we try to do. Robinson back in action Angel Robinson returned to the court for the first time in three games during the victory over UAB. The senior from Marietta was injured with 9:02 left against Rutgers on Nov. 22 when she fell in a pile of players and slammed her head on the floor. Robinson was placed on spine board and transported to St. Mary s Hospital. She underwent a CT scan and X-rays, which were negative, and Robinson was discharged from the hospital that evening. Robinson did not play against State or at the Southern Miss Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic. She then came within one rebound of a double-double in just 18 minutes of action against the Blazers. Holiday hardware for two Ashley Houts was named the Most Valuable Player of the Lady Eagle Thanksgiving Classic, while Jasmine James joined her on the all-tourney team. In Friday s win over Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Houts scored 16 points, grabbed seven rebounds and dished out five assists. James scored a game-high 18 points. In the win over tourney host Southern Miss in the championship game, Houts posted 17 points, six steals and four assists. James poured in a game-high 24 points, one shy of her career high. Low- and High-ball history Through the years, much has been made of Georgia s record when its offense clicks. With their win over Southern Miss, the Lady Bulldogs improved to when scoring 80 or more points under Andy Landers, an astronomical winning percentage of With their Nov. 22 win over Rutgers, the Lady Bulldogs made history on the other end of the scoring spectrum, however. The victory over the Scarlet Knights represented the first time in 967 games coached by Andy Landers at Georgia that the Lady Dogs won when scoring fewer than 50. Georgia has failed to reach the half-century mark just 20 times during Landers 31 seasons in Athens, and the Lady Bulldogs had lost all previous 19 contests before the decision over Rutgers. Trio joins starter sorority When Georgia welcomed a top-five recruiting class to Athens this fall, the question became more of a when as opposed to an if scenario as to who the first first-year starter would be. During the first five games of the campaign, Jasmine James, Jasmine Hassell and Anne Marie Armstrong become the 63rd, 64th and 65th freshmen to get the nod during Andy Landers 31 seasons at UGA. In addition, 21 freshman standouts got the nod for their collegiate debuts. James logged her first start at Chattanooga, Hassell did so versus State and Armstrong started against Texas A&M- Corpus Christi.

5 Lady Bulldogs vs. Savannah State Game Notes Page 5 Four of the Lady Bulldogs five returning letterwinners Ashley Houts, Christy Marshall, Angel Robinson and Meredith Mitchell are included on that ledger, with Houts also being one of the 21 to open their careers on the floor for the season opener. Mitchell making a mark Meredith Mitchell rewrote her previous career-high statistical marks on a nightly basis during the first three games of the year. Mitchell s highest contributions as a freshman in were eight points, five rebounds and 26 minutes. In the first three games the season, Mitchell bettered those marks and the subsequent new efforts a combined seven times. The Midfield, Ala., native upped her scoring mark to nine and her minutes tally to 27 against Oklahoma. She then bested the board tally to six and the MP to 35 at Chattanooga. Against Rutgers, Mitchell topped all three existing qualifiers with 11 points, eight rebounds and 40 minutes played. Mitchell s stellar play has continued. She also has: improved her career steals high with six thefts versus State; bettered that scoring output with 17 versus e State; equaled the career-high eight boards against Virginia and then topped that mark with nine rebounds at Clemson. A historic Houts homecoming With Georgia trailing by six and 30 seconds left in the first half, Ashley Houts took control of her homecoming at Chattanooga. She scored 13 straight in a victory played just 15 minutes from her hometown. The Trenton, Ga., native knocked down a three to cut UTC s lead in and then scored Georgia s first 10 points in the first 3:24 of the second period to give the Lady Bulldogs a lead they would never relinquish. Houts not only propelled Georgia to victory, she also furthered her own individual legend in Lady Bulldog Basketball annals. Houts three-pointer with half a minute left in the first half moved her past Pam Irwin- Osbolt into the No. 26 spot among the Lady Bulldogs career scoring leaders. Houts finished with 21 points against the Lady Mocs, enough to also ascend past No. 25 Carla Green and No. 24 Cynthia Collins on the career scoring leaders ledger. Lady Bulldogs return to pre-season Associated Press poll AP Pre-season Polls Season Rank Season Rank Georgia opens the campaign with a pre-season Associated Press ranking of No. 21, ending a one-year hiatus from the initial AP poll for the first time since the early-80s. Last fall, the Lady Bulldogs were not ranked in the first AP poll for the first time since Jimmy Carter was President and Herschel Walker was wrapping up a freshman campaign that turned him into a national phenomenon. The pre-season edition of the AP poll was released on Nov. 25, just months before Ronald Reagan would take up residence on Pennsylvania Avenue and four days before Walker capped the Bulldogs undefeated regular-season with 205 rushing yards in a victory over Georgia Tech. Georgia went on to defeat Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl to capture the national title. The following fall, Georgia was listed No. 12 at the opening the season, which also represented UGA s first-ever AP ranking of any kind. Upstart Andy Landers had just begun to make some noise in Athens, leading Georgia to the 1981 WNIT Championship and landing Janet Harris, the top-ranked prep prospect in the country. Since then, Georgia has been a mainstay in the polls. The Lady Bulldogs had been ranked in 27 straight pre-season polls, including 21 times in the top 10 as outlined in the column to the right. FYI, the Lady Bulldogs were in the No. 32 position among the teams receiving votes in the pre-season poll but never moved into the rankings during the season...also another first since Houts has since ascended over No. 23 Alexis Kendrick, No. 22 Sherelle Warren, No. 21 Janese Hardrick, No. 20 Tawana McDonald and No. 19 Stacey Ford among the Lady Dogs career leaders. Marshall s surgery goes well Christy Marshall underwent successful surgery on Nov. 17 to repair the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee that she tore during the pre-season. Marshall injured her knee in a team workout on October 13, two days before the official opening of practice. The ACL tear was later confirmed through an MRI. It rips my guts out every time a kid falls and grabs their knee, Andy Landers said the day after the injury was sustained. It s an all-too-common injury in women s basketball. My heart goes out to Christy. We re all in a state of shock at this point. Marshall, the 2006 SEC Sixth Woman of the Year, started 21 of 31 games in , averaging 8.8 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. For her career, she has played in 95 games with 28 starts and produced averages of 7.7 points and 3.6 rebounds. Record number of TV dates!
