Little Rock, NCAA Tournament (Duluth, Ga.) * SEC game All times EASTERN Lady Bulldogs back in NCAAs Georgia earned a spot in the bracket of the NCAA Division I Women s Basketball Championships for the 26th time in 28 editions of March Madness when the field was announced on Monday evening. In the process, UGA moved into sole possession of the No. 2 position on the NCAA Tournament s leaders ledger for all-time bids. Traditional national powers Louisiana Tech and Old Dominion both missed this year s tournament and remained stuck on 25 invites. The Lady Bulldogs, who are the No. 11 seed in the Trenton Regional, will host No. 6-seeded Arizona State on Saturday at noon at the Arena at Gwinnett Center in Duluth, Ga.. The facility is about an hour down Georgia Highway 316 from the UGA campus. Andy Landers teams are traditionally accustomed to watching selection shows pondering their seeding rather than their inclusion. Therefore, Monday s telecast was quite unique for Georgia Basketball. An obvious bubble team, the Lady Bulldogs were forced to wait until the last eighth of the bracket was revealed to discover their fate. In addition, Georgia anxiously reviewed the location of every game announced... ensuring that Duluth didn t appear without the Lady Bulldogs listed. Obviously our basketball team is very excited if not thrilled to be included, Landers said. We realized the bubble and the size of the bubble. We had played ourselves onto a small bubble, and we knew that we had a chance to get in and a chance to be left out. You re talking about an excited and happy group of young ladies who I think will come out and do their very best in this game against Arizona State. Monday s high drama has been closer to the rule than the exception for the Lady Bulldog campaign. The previous four months have been quite the roller-coaster ride indeed. And much like the best thrill rides, the ascents and descents occurred when least expected. Here s an attempt at an abridged version. Georgia secured a solid road win at Oakland in its second game of the campaign only to fall to Detroit two days later. That setback removed the Lady Bulldogs from both national polls for the first time since January 2003 a span of nearly six years. UGA bounded back to post a quintet of wins by 29.0 points per game before dropping back-to-back road decisions to Georgia Tech and Rutgers. The Lady Bulldogs averaged 38.0 points in those losses. The luster of a pair of pre-holiday wins quickly dulled with setbacks to Xavier, at Virginia and at Ole Miss, just the sixth threegame skid in Landers 947 games coached at Georgia to that point Georgia Lady Bulldog Basketball Roster No. Name Pos. Ht. Cl. PPG RPG... After Georgia topped South Carolina in the SEC home opener and Landers secured career win No. 800 against Savannah State, the Lady Bulldogs lost to Florida for the first time since At that point, Georgia was 11-7 overall and 1-2 in SEC play, and the Lady Bulldogs season appeared ready to come completely off the tracks. Seemingly overnight, UGA transformed into a different team. The Lady Bulldogs strung together four straight wins including upsets of then-no. 17 Vanderbilt and then- No. 5 Auburn, which was a perfect 20-0 prior to losing to the Lady Bulldogs. Just as quickly, Georgia embarked on an unprecedented fall, dropping five straight for the first time ever under Landers. With two games left in the regular season, the Lady Dogs string of 29 straight winning seasons seemed in potential jeopardy. A road win at Kentucky and an upset of Florida rounded out the regular season before Georgia topped Kentucky and lost a heart-breaker to eventual champion Vanderbilt in the SEC Tournament. The Lady Bulldogs were then forced to sit on a stalled-out roller coaster for 10 days during Spring Break at UGA before the NCAA Tournament bracket was released and their season would continue. 1 Ashley Houts G 5-6 Jr MP; career-high 26 at UK, 12 of UGA s final 13 pts. 4 Danielle Taylor F 6-1 Sr double-digit games in first three seasons; 8 in Meredith Mitchell G 6-1 Fr nd freshman to start for Landers at UGA vs. Sav. As mentioned earlier, Georgia is now all alone at No. 2 on the list of all-time NCAA Tournament appearances with 26. The Lady Bulldogs haven t just made the field, they ve traditionally played deep into the bracket. All told, the Lady Bulldogs all under Landers have now reached 26 of 28 NCAA Tournaments (92.9 percent). Georgia has advanced to 17 of 27 Sweet 16s (63.0 percent), 10 of 27 Elite Eights (37.0 percent) and five of 27 Final Fours (18.5 percent). Arizona State most recently swept both ends of a home-and-home series contested during the early portions and seasons. The Sun Devils secured a win in Tempe on Dec. 2, 2002 and earned a victory on Dec. 7, 2004 in Athens. Georgia won the initial matchup with Arizona State, a overtime victory in the championship game of the 1981 WNIT in Amarillo, Texas. The Sun Devils then topped Georgia, 97-77, in the first round of the first-ever NCAA Tournament the following year in Thirty-two teams were in that bracket. The Lady Bulldogs and Seminoles have played during each of the past two seasons. Georgia defeated FSU in overtime in the first round of the FIU Fun & Sun Classic on Dec. 29, Ashley Houts played all 45 minutes and was named the event s MVP after scoring 24 points in the championship game the following day. The Lady Bulldogs also notched a victory on Jan. 21, 2007, in a Russell Athletic Shootout game played at the Arena at Gwinnett Center. Houts played a pivotal role in that contest as well, with a steal and a pair of FTs with 24 seconds left to make it a twopossession game. The Energizer Bulldog...she keeps going and going and going! The picture above likely displays the last time Ashley Houts will leave the bench. In Gainesville, she picked up her fourth foul with 16:02 left in the game and remained in the contest until purposely fouling out with 24.9 seconds remaining. Against the Commodores, Houts was whistled for the fourth time with 16:06 left on the clock but never left the floor. Anne Marie Armstrong, Jasmine Hassell, Jasmine James and Tamika Willis each ranked among the nation s top-50 overall prospects by one or more scouting services will continue their basketball careers in Athens next fall. The class has been ranked No. 3 nationally by both All-Star Girls Basketball Report and The Collegiate Girls Basketball Report, as well as No. 5 by Blue Star and No. 7 by Hoopgurlz. I m very pleased with the quality of the class, Landers said. I m sure this class as a whole will be recognized as an outstanding group, but each individual player is outstanding and will have the opportunity to make our team better. This is the sum total of a lot of hard work and diligence on the part of our coaching staff and our assistant coaches should be congratulated. Armstrong, a 6-3, wing coached by Jan Azar at the Wesleyan School in Norcross, Ga., is the reigning Miss Georgia Basketball and ranked as the nation s No. 6 prospect at her position by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. Hassell, a 6-2, center coached by Bud Brandon at Wilson Central High School in Lebanon, Tenn., was named the 2008 Division I AAA Miss Basketball for Tennessee after leading the Wildcats to their second state title in three years. She is listed as the nation s No. 6 center by the All-Star Girls Report. James, a 5-9, guard coached by Lynn Whitfield at Barlett High School in Memphis, Tenn., was named the Memphis Commercial Appeal s Player of the Year as both a sophomore and a junior. She is ranked No. 5 nationally among guard prospects by the All-Star Girls Report. Willis, a 6-2, forward coached by Hilda Hankerson at Atlanta s Westlake High, is a two time All-State performer in Class AAAA and tabbed as the No. 11 post prospect by the Collegiate Girls Basketball Report. It s an opportunity for us and for me as the lone senior having another chance to go to the tournament, Taylor added. Having been every year, it s definitely a privilege and an honor to go again. I m very excited about playing in the NCAA Tournament. Not home but not too far away Georgia is no stranger to the Arena at Gwinnett Center, compiling a 5-1 record during four different appearances in Duluth over the past five seasons. On Dec. 22 this season, the Lady Bulldogs defeated Clemson in Duluth. After trailing by a dozen points late in the first half, Georgia scored the final eight of the period and opened the second stanza on a 14-2 run to completely turn the game around. The facility hosted the Russell Athletic Shootout from , an SEC vs. ACC doubleheader featuring the Lady Bulldogs and Georiga Tech as co-hosts. Georgia topped Clemson (88-60), Miami (74-59) and Florida State (70-65) during three Shootouts. The arena also was site of the 2007 SEC Tournament when the second-seeded Lady Bulldogs defeated Kentucky (72-40) before falling to eventual champion Vanderbilt (81-56) in the semifinal round. Houts, Robinson named All-SEC Juniors Ashley Houts and Angel Robinson were tabbed second-team All-SEC in balloting of league coaches. Houts leads the Lady Bulldogs in scoring (12.2 ppg), free throw percentage (.793), assists (4.7 apg), steals (2.2 spg) and minutes played (37.6 mpg). Robinson is second on the team in scoring at She leads the SEC in rebounding (9.3 rpg) and tops Georgia in field goal percentage (.561) and blocks (2.2 bpg). Robinson rolling Angel Robinson has elevated her game of late. Over the last seven outings, the junior from Marietta is averaging 15.6 points and 11.9 rebounds while connecting on 61.3 percent of her field goal attempts. She has four of her team-high nine double-doubles during that span. Robinson played the finest game of her career in Georgia s loss to Vanderbilt in the semifinals of the SEC Tournament. She scored a career-high 29 points and hauled in a season-best 16 rebounds. Both figures represented the top tally by any Lady Bulldog this season.

7 The Magic Number returns After scoring more than 80 points in three of its first five games, Georgia went 23 consecutive games without reaching that mark before Lady Bulldogs then scored 84 and 82 points in back-to-back outings against Florida and Kentucky. Those performances furthered perhaps one of the greatest statistical indicators in intercollegiate athletics. During Andy Landers 30 seasons at UGA, Georgia has compiled an astronomical record when scoring 80 or more points. That equates to a success rate of percent when hitting the 80-point plateua on Landers watch. Robinson takes SEC board lead The SEC s top two rebounders went head to head in the SEC Tourney quarterfinals. Kentucky s Victoria Dunlap led the league in rebounding, while Angel Robinson was second. Both were collecting 9.1 boards per game, with Dunlap snaring a single rebound more over 29 regular-season games. Robinson hauled in 10 boards to Dunlap s five to inch ahead to the top position in the conference stats. Robinson then furthered that lead with 16 boards against Vanderbilt in the SEC semis. Robinson is attempting to become the fourth Georgia player to lead the SEC in rebounding, following Janet Harris (10.3 rpg in ), Katrina McClain (12.2 rpg in ) and Tammye Jenkins (8.6 rpg in ). Ding, dong the streak is dead! The Feb. 26 win at Kentucky snapped the first five-game losing streak during Andy Landers 30 seasons in Athens. Georgia had dropped successive decisions to No. 12 Tennessee, Arkansas, No. 24 Vanderbilt, LSU and No. 3 Auburn before topping the Wildcats. In fact, the Lady Dogs had never lost four straight in a single season under Landers. Georgia fell to Stanford in the Elite Eight of the 1991 NCAA Tournament and then dropped the first three games of the campaign in the only other four-game losing streak under Landers. Wherefore art thou Defense An intriguing and puzzling common denominator during the first three setbacks in Georgia s five-game losing streak was the Lady Bulldogs defensive performance. While UGA struggled with scoring, rebounding and turnover woes at times, its defense had been relatively solid from the get-go. After allowing only one team to score 70 points in the first 22 games of the season, Georgia gave up successive season-high scores of 73 to Tennessee, 77 to Arkansas and 80 to Vanderbilt. A streak dies, a streak lives on! Georgia guaranteed a winning record for the 30th straight season with the victory at Kentucky. Georgia is one of only four schools to post a winning record during each of the 28 seasons since women s hoops came under NCAA guidance with the season. Louisiana Tech, Tennessee and Wisconsin-Green Bay are the other three. Andy Landers has coached the Lady Bulldogs to 30 straight winning seasons, the second-longest streak among all Division I head coaches trailing only Pat Summitt s tally of 35. She was Houtstanding Ashley Houts was selected as the SEC Player of the Week on March 2 after averaging 20.0 points in wins over Kentucky and No. 17 Florida. Houts scored a career-high 26 points at Kentucky and followed that with 14 against the Gators. During those wins, Houts also ascended among the Lady Bulldogs statistical career leader ledgers for points, assists and free throws made. Houts also was tabbed SEC Player of the Week on Dec. 1. A duo of class reunions Redan High School classmates Porsha Phillips and Armani Franklin squared off in competing uniforms in the SEC Tourney for the second time in three games. In fact, a Lady Bulldog faced someone from their high school graduating class three times in a five-game span. On Feb. 19, Meredith Mitchell met LSU s Courtney Jones. They led Midfield High to Alabama AAAA state titles in 2007 and UGA s Phillips and UK s Franklin both graduated from Redan High after helping the Lady Raiders to a record from During that span, Redan finished as Georgia s Class AAAAA runner-up in 2005, reached the state semifinals in 2006 and advanced to the state quarterfinals in 2003 and Phillips and Franklin were coached by former Lady Bulldog Rhonda Malone at Redan. Malone was a two-year starter at UGA and a member of teams that reached the 1983 Final Four and captured the 1983 and 1984 SEC Championships. Double-digit TV dates ESPN2 s telecast of the Arizona State game is the 14th TV date for Georgia during the season. Three regular-season contests aired on the ESPN family of networks at Rutgers and at Vanderbilt were on ESPN2 and at Virginia was shown on ESPNU. FOX Sports Net and FOX Sports South aired seven games. Matchups at Florida, vs. Vanderbilt, at Tennessee and at Auburn were televised nationally on FSN. FSSO s telecast at Kentucky wrapped up the FOX regular-season slate and the network also aired SEC Tournament games versus Kentucky and Vanderbilt. In addition, CSS aired a trio of contests, games at Ole Miss game and those against Auburn and Florida in Athens. The Lady Bulldogs annually are one of the nation s most televised teams. Georgia is (.617) all-time on TV. Over the past five years, UGA has appeared on TV an average of 16.2 times per season. Houts becomes 30th to 1000 Ashley Houts became the Lady Bulldogs 30th 1,000-point career scorer during the Feb. 15 game at Vanderbilt. Houts has since upped that tally to 1,084 points is now only nine away from the No. 27 total (1,093 points) among Georgia s career scoring leaders that is currently occupied by Kara Braxton. Houts a top-10 table setter too Ashley Houts not only scores, she has helped other Lady Bulldogs notch plenty of points as well. She joined Georgia s top-10 career leaders for quoting the cool kids dropping dimes during the Feb. 8 Arkansas game. Houts moved ahead of Coco Miller and Sherill Baker to No. 9 against the Razorbacks, ascended past Saudia Roundtree to No. 8 at Kentucky, climbed over Carla Green to No. 7 mark versus Florida and passed No. 6 Lady Hardmon during the SEC Tournament matchup with Vanderbilt. Houts is currently two assists shy of No. 5 Rachel Powell as outlined on Page 10 of this Media Guide. Houts already had joined some pretty elite UGA company. When she delivered her 100th assist of the year against Auburn on Jan. 29, Houts became just the fourth Lady Bulldog to post 100 assists in each of their first three seasons in Athens. Teresa Edwards, Kelly Miller and Alexis Kendrick are the other Lady Bulldog guards to do so. Puleo s Tour de Stegeman Angela Puleo s practice time was minimal from Dec. 31-Feb. 7 after she was diagnosed with a stress reaction in her right fibula just after the holiday break. Typically, Puleo rode a stationary bike during practice and then joined walkthroughs of opponent scouting information. On Feb. 9, she began working her way back into limited rotations of practices totaling about 30 minutes per session. Puleo has practiced with no limitations since Feb. 24. While Puleo was spared the rigors of the up-and-down action of practice, she logged massive miles without moving an inch. Athletic trainer Shannon Becker estimates Puleo logged miles on stationary bikes from Dec.31-Feb. 20. For some perspective...following mapquest s directions, there are miles separating Stegeman Coliseum and Alltel Arena in North Little Rock, Ark., where the SEC Tournament was contested. Becker is confident Puleo has sprinted the remaining distance. Houts stealing the show Ashley Houts passed Cynthia Collins to join Lady Bulldogs Basketball s top-10 career steals leaders during the Rutgers game on Dec. 8. Houts has since moved ahead of Bernadette Locke to No. 9 at Ole Miss, ascended over Coco Miller into the No. 8 slot during the Savannah State game and tied Carla Green s No. 7 tally against LSU before inching ahead at Auburn. With 247 steals to date, Houts is currently 32 thefts shy of Janet Harris No. 6 mark as outlined on Page 10 of this Media Guide. Out of my way, coach! Angel Robinson swatted three shots at Oakland on Nov. 20 to inch past current assistant coach La Keshia Frett into the No. 10 position among Georgia s career blocks leaders. Robinson has since ascended to the No. 7 slot passing Kara Braxton against Tennessee Tech, Wanda Holloway at Georgia Tech and Tasha Humphrey at Ole Miss. Robinson enters today with 149 career blocks, 14 swats from the current No. 6, Tammye Jenkins as outlined on Page 10 of this Media Guide. Lady Bulldogs Think Pink Georgia participated in four games as part of the WBCA s Pink Zone initiative. The Jan. 18 game in Gainesville was Florida s designated outing, as were Georgia s contest against Arkansas in Athens on Feb. 8, a February Frenzy matchup at Vanderbilt on Feb. 15 and a Feb. 22 trip to Auburn. In addition, the Dec. 8 Rutgers game was part of the Jimmy V Classic to benefit the Jimmy V Foundation for cancer research. More than 1,500 schools and organizations are participating in the WBCA s 2009 Pink Zone initiative, which is its global, unified effort to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. The Pink Zone program hit home in the women s basketball universe when N.C. State Kay Yow lost her decades-long battle with breast cancer on Jan. 24. I ve never met anybody that didn t respect Kay, Andy Landers said. I m blessed because we did have a great relationship. She was a classy, straight-up, honest, non-pretentious person. I ve known her for 30 years, She was one of the few people who had no junk in their closet. She was a great role model to her players and a great coach. Think Pink hits home Unfortunately like so many other women s basketball programs across the nation, Lady Bulldog Basketball have a very close association with breast cancer. Ann Smith, Andy Landers administrative associate for the past nine seasons, is a breast cancer survivor. Smith was diagnosed in December 2004 during a regular mammogram. Following three surgeries, Smith has been cancer free since March She takes medicine monthly as a preventative measure and has check-ups every six months. Marshall has eye for big stage Christy Marshall scored a team-high 16 points at Tennessee on Feb. 5. Though that marked the only time this season Marshall led the Lady Bulldogs on the offensive end, there were precedent-setting indicators she would lead the way in Knoxville. Marshall has now paced Georgia s offense seven times in 94 games played in her collegiate career. However, each of those outings was considered a big game : at No.6 LSU, versus No. 4 Tennessee in Athens and against Belmont (NCAA) as a freshman; at No. 11 Oklahoma, against No. 3 Tennessee and versus Alabama (SEC) as a sophomore; and now at No. 12 Tennessee as a junior. Philllips earns SEC honor Porsha Phillips was named SEC Player of the Week on Feb. 3 after averaging 14.0 points and hitting on 61.1 percent of her FGs and percent of her FTs in wins over No. 5 Auburn and Mississippi State. 9 Phillips scored 10 points while making 5-of-6 shots from the field against previously undefeated Auburn. Against Mississippi State, Phillips scored eight points in the first 3:08 to almost singlehandedly stake the Lady Bulldogs with an 11-0 lead. The sophomore from Stone Mountain eventually posted her first-ever SEC double-double in that contest with game-high tallies of 18 points and 10 boards. A rare 20-win unbeaten ATH foe Auburn represented just the second undefeated 20-win opponent to face the Lady Bulldogs in Athens when the Tigers came to town on Jan. 29. The only other squad to arrive at Stegeman Coliseum unscathed that deep into the regular-season campaign came to town just shy of two decades earlier and also called home The Plains. On Feb. 28, 1989, top-ranked Auburn brought a 25-0 record to what was then the Georgia Coliseum and defeated No. Georgia, Lee dismissed from team Andy Landers announced on Thursday, Jan. 22, that sophomore Jasmine Lee had been dismissed from the Georgia program. Coaching her had become a drain, Landers said. Landers collects 800th W Andy Landers became just the fifth NCAA Division I women s coach to ascend to the 800-win plateau with a Jan. 15 victory over Savannah State. Pat Summitt was the first coach there, and she was then successively joined by Jody Conradt, C. Vivian Stringer and Sylvia Hatchell, who notched her 800th W just five days before Landers. Landers reached the exclusive 800 Club in 1052 games, the second-fastest progression. Summitt did so in 961 contests, with Conradt taking 1,062 games, Stringer using 1,064 contests and Hatchell utilizing 1,074 dates. Enquiring about what most consider to be his individual accomplishments will usually bring a relatively quick and strong admonishing from Landers. Lady Dogs unranked for first time since Carter administration AP Pre-season Polls Season Rank Season Rank The last time the Georgia s Lady Bulldogs were not ranked in the Associated Press pre-season women s basketball poll Jimmy Carter was President and Herschel Walker was wrapping up a freshman campaign that turned him into a national phenomenon. The initial edition of the AP poll was released on Nov. 25, just months before Ronald Reagan would take up residence on Pennsylvania Avenue and four days before Walker capped the Bulldogs undefeated regular-season with 205 rushing yards in a victory over Georgia Tech. Georgia went on to defeat Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl to capture the national title. The following fall, Georgia was listed No. 12 at the opening the season, which also represented UGA s first-ever AP ranking of any kind. Upstart Andy Landers had just begun to make some noise in Athens, When questioned about his achievements, Landers traditionally offers some form or the following reply: I haven t scored a single point during my entire coaching career. While he was reluctant to discuss the milestone before hand, Landers was pretty much forced to do so after the Lady Bulldogs supplied Landers with his 799th win versus South Carolina on Jan No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No No. 19 leading Georgia to the 1981 WNIT Championship and landing Janet Harris, the topranked prep prospect in the country. Since then, Georgia has been a mainstay in the polls. The Lady Bulldogs had been ranked in 27 straight pre-season polls, including 21 times in the top 10 as outlined in the column to the right. When this year s pre-season poll was announced on Nov. 1, the Lady Bulldogs were in the No. 32 position among the teams receiving votes. Georgia garnered 37 points among the 45 media members who comprise the AP voting register. It s never been, and I don t want it to ever be, about me, Landers said. It takes good players and a commitment from a lot of people. The terrific work of our administration makes it possible they support us in a way to compete as well as we can. What makes it a reality is people coming in and playing up to their potential. On the food chain in all of this, I rank fourth behind the players, administration and assistant coaches. Hey, the 2009 NCAA Records Book has Andy Landers with a record entering this season. What gives? In our mind, that total is not quite fully accurate. Georgia chooses to politely disagree with the NCAA on what constitutes Landers career record as a collegiate coach. Prior to coming to UGA as the Lady Bulldogs first and still only full-time head coach, Landers compiled an record in four seasons at Roane State Community College, a junior college in Harriman, Tenn. The NCAA does not recognize Landers Roane State wins because they were not earned at a four-year institution. Therefore, the NCAA says Landers career record includes only his efforts at UGA. Georgia opts to include Landers Roane results and has since in With all due respect, its seems odd that the NCAA allows Georgia and every other women s basketball program to count its wins and losses against junior college competition during the 1970s but won t recognize Landers efforts in that same time frame. In fact, 33 of Landers victories at Roane or 40.2 percent to be exact came against four-year schools. Roane was 33-1 versus four-year schools during Landers tenure. In a side note, Roane State is the same school that received national headlines for having 73-year-old Ken Mink on its men s basketball team this season. Another Landers tradition Meredith Mitchell notched her first career start against Savannah State, becoming the 62nd freshman to start for Andy Landers at Georgia. That list also includes current Lady Bulldogs Ashley Houts, Christy Marshall, Angela Puleo and Angel Robinson. Lady Dogs 10th to 750 wins A win over East Tennessee State on Dec. 1 made the Georgia just the 10th NCAA Division I women s basketball program to secure 750 all-time victories. Georgia has been rapidly climbing rankings of the nation s winningest programs. UGA was 22nd to 500 wins on Dec. 1, 1998; 17th to 600 victories on Feb. 21, 2002; the 15th to 700 Ws on Nov. 29, First-time Family viewings A pair of paternal grandmothers saw their granddaughters play in person for the first time ever at Rutgers on Dec. 8. Much of the family of Jaleesa Rhoden s father, Tony, lives in Brooklyn. Included in that group is Olive Campbell, Tony s mother, who had never seen Jaleesa play live before. Angela Puleo s father, former Major League pitcher Charlie Puleo, is a native Bloomfield, N.J., and his mother, Angelina Puleo, and a whole slew of Puleos attended the Rutgers game. Viva Houts Vegas! Ashley Houts was named SEC Player of the Week on Dec. 1 after posting three successive season-high scoring outputs in a span of four days. Houts was named SEC Freshman of the Week four times but that was her first Player of the Week honor. For the week, the junior from Trenton, Ga., averaged 19.7 points by connecting on 57.9 percent of her field goals and 90.0 percent of her free throws. She also was named MVP of UNLV s Lady Rebel Round-up. Unfamiliar sight out of polls Georgia dropped from No. 23 to outside the top-25 in the USA Today/ESPN coaches poll on Nov. 24, the first week without the Lady Bulldogs in a national poll in nearly six years. Georgia last wasn t ranked during the week of Jan. 13, Injury ends Stroud s career Redshirt freshman Nicole Stroud s collegiate career ended before it began. Andy Landers announced on Nov. 11 that it was not in Stroud s best interest to attempt to play due to recurring issues with an injury to her right knee. Stroud, a 6-3, forward, was a two-time All-State performer at Avondale High School where she led the Blue Devils to the Georgia AAA state title as a junior. She became the first basketball player in Georgia history to post a triple-double in a state title game when she scored 16 points, grabbed 16 rebounds and blocked 11 shots in Avondale s victory over Hepzibah in the 2006 championship contest. Stroud originally injured her knee just two games into her freshman season at Avondale. She played the following three seasons there but began experiencing difficulties last fall. A microfracture was performed to address those issues. While her rehab proceeded as planned, Stroud had additional problems just prior to the start of pre-season camp. She rehabbed diligently and we were very disciplined in her comeback plan and she did not start back with us until fall, so essentially she was out about nine or 10 months, Landers said. But she did start back initially and it was limited. Everything went well for seven or eight days. Then on a Sunday night in the dorm, it blew up on her and started swelling. We worked for a week to get the swelling out, we tried it again and it did it again. Stroud s departure reduced the Lady Bulldogs tally of scholarship players on the roster to nine, a ledger that shrunk to eight when Jasmine Lee was dismissed from the team in January. Holiday bike program doubles The concourse at Stegeman Coliseum was converted into an bicycle assembly shop on Dec. 13 as the Lady Bulldogs and friends assembled 55 bikes to be given away to worthy children during the holidays. In its second year the program more than doubled the number of bikes given away of 20 during its initial effort in Georgia s players, representatives of Academy Sports & Outdoors and members of the Lady Bulldogs booster club put together the bikes. The majority of the bicycles were distributed via Operation Homefront, a non-profit agency which is designed to provide both emergency assistance and morale to military troops, to their families they leave behind when deployed and to wounded solidiers when they return home.
