Miller TIME: RUNNING BACK EARNS WEEKLY NATIONAL AWARD University of Miami sophomore running back Lamar Miller has been named the College Football Performance Awards National Running Back of the Week after rushing for 184 yards in Miami s 24-6 win over No. 17/16 Ohio State Saturday at Sun Life Stadium. Miller carried the ball 26 times for an average of 7.1 yards per carry, with a career long run of 54 yards that came on Miami s first play from scrimmage. He finished the first quarter with 115 yards on just nine carries. Miller s 115-yard first-quarter performance marked the first time a Cane rushed for more than 100 yards in a quarter since Damien Berry gained 108 yards in the Oct. 10, 2009 matchup with FAMU. The 100-plus performance was the fourth of his career, as the Miami native also set highs for attempts and yards. Through two games, Miller now has 303 yards rushing on 44 carries (6.9 ypc). His rushing yards per game (151.5) currently ranks fourth nationally behind Marcus Lattimore of South Carolina (178.0), Ronnie Hillman of San Diego State (165.67) and Denard Robinson of Michigan (153.0). Miller also ranks first in the ACC and second nationally in all-purpose yardage, as his total yards per game trails only Brelan Chancellor of North Texas (226.67). Miller s 54-yard scamper that led to UM s first touchdown in the first quarter was the longest rush of his career. His previous long was 47 yards on Nov. 20, 2010 against Virginia Tech. The BUCK STOPS HERE Coming into last Saturday s game, Ohio State had not allowed a sack in any of its last 90 pass attempts, the thirdlongest active FBS streak. The Hurricanes ended that streak at 95, as Canes defensive lineman Darius Smith sacked OSU QB Braxton Miller to end the first quarter, then freshmen defensive end Anthony Chickillo recorded his first career sack in the second half. The UM defense held the Ohio State quarterbacks to 4-for-18 passing, marking the lowest number of completed passes against a UM defense since the Canes held Wake Forest to just three completions in Ohio State had only four passing yards in the first half and ended the night with 35 yards. The Hurricanes didn t allow Ohio State to score a touchdown in the game, a feat last accomplished by Penn State in UM LEADS STATE & NO. 38 IN U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT RANKINGS In the 2012 edition of the U.S. News & World Report's annual "Best Colleges" issue, released today, the University of Miami has risen to number 38 - up from 47 last year, a nine point rise. UM remains the highest ranked school in the state of Florida. In an impressive ascent, UM has moved up 29 slots in the last 10 years, making it one of the fastest-rising institutions among national universities in recent times. UM is the only school currently in the top 50 to move up nine spots in one year and 29 spots in the past 10 years. Hello, MY NAME IS Hurricanes faithful may notice a few unfamiliar names on jerseys as 20 newcomers saw substantial playing time in the season-opener at Maryland. Fourteen players made their first collegiate appearance, including nine true freshmen. Six Canes made their first career starts in Dalton Botts (P), Darius Smith (DT), Jake Wieclaw (K), James Gaines (LB), Maurice Hagens (FB) and Allen Hurns (WR). Appearing for the first time as Miami Hurricanes were Thurston Armbrister, Malcolm Bunche, Anthony Chickillo, Phillip Dorsett, Jon Feliciano, Thomas Finnie, Jalen Grimble, Darion Hall, Shane McDermott, Gionni Paul, Denzel Perryman, Olsen Pierre and Andrew Swasey. In addition, four-year cornerback transfer Mike Williams (Wake Forest) started the game for UM. Home SWEET SUNSHINE STATE HOME Miami s game on September 5 in College Park, Md., was the first of only three games that the Canes will play outside of the Sunshine State this season. Miami will travel to Virginia Tech for a game on October 8 and to North Carolina the following week. Nine games this season will be played in Florida, including a trip to Tallahassee to face Florida State on Nov. 12 and to Tampa for a tilt with USF on November 19. Miami FOOTBALL RANKED EIGHTH NATIONALLY IN APR When the NCAA s Academic Progress Report (APR) was announced in May, the Canes football program headlined an outstanding academic showing by the University of Miami this past school year. The football team (along with baseball, men s basketball and men s tennis) improved upon its APR score for an impressive seventh straight season. In fact, the UM football program s APR score (978) ranked eighth among all FBS schools. HURRICANESPORTS.COM FACEBOOK.COM/MIAMIHURRICANES THEUFOOTBALL.COM
