ROSE BOWL: THE 31st YEAR The 2012 season marks the 31st year that the Rose Bowl, currently undergoing a renovation, will serve as home of the Bruins. On Oct. 28, 2012, the stadium marked its 90th birthday. The focus of the renovation project is to expedite tunnel ingress/egress, improve concourse circulation, increase the number of concession stands and restrooms, provide state-of-the-art premium seating products in a rebuilt press box and install a new scoreboard and video board. UCLA moved to Pasadena from the L.A. Coliseum in the summer of 1982 and went in that first year, capping the season with a victory over Michigan in the Rose Bowl game. The 2006 season-opening win against Utah was UCLA s 100th at the Rose Bowl. The Bruins own a record of since moving to Pasadena, including a 3-2 record in Rose Bowl games. In July of 2007, the Rose Bowl was selected the No. 1 sports venue by SI.com/SIon- Campus. IN BRIEF **Johnathan Franklin s rushing total of 4,110 yards ranks sixth on the Pac-12 conference career list (5th is Darrin Nelson of Stanford, ,169) **Franklin recorded his eighth 100-yard rushing game of the season this past Saturday against USC which tied to the school single-season record **UCLA has won five straight games in a season for the first time since 2005, when it won first eight; it is also the last time that UCLA has won five straight conference games in a season **Redshirt sophomore linebacker Eric Kendricks has recorded 55 tackles in his last four games (10 v. Following a Kai Forbath missed field goal attempt, Stanford proceeded to score 14 points in nine seconds, on a touchdown run and a fumble return, to take a 28-0 advantage into the fourth quarter and went on to a 35-0 win. In the last series win by the Bruins, the 2008 contest played at the Rose Bowl, Kevin Craft hit Cory Harkey with a seven-yard scoring pass with 10 seconds to play to give the Bruins a dramatic victory. He went on to rack up 162 rushing yards on the night. He posted his 18th 100-yard rushing game with a 171-yard effort versus USC. It was the most rushing yards by a Bruin against the Trojans since Gaston Green ran for 224 in It was the eighth 100-yard rushing game of this season which tied the school record shared by Karim Abdul-Jabbar (1995), Gaston Green (1986), Freeman McNeil (1980, 1979) and Wendell Tyler (1975). He kicked off the 2012 season with a pair of 200-yard plus rushing games, the second and third of his career, to match Gaston Green (1985, 1986, 1987) and Karim Abdul-Jabbar (three in a row 1995) for the most in school history. In game three against Houston, he racked up 110 yards on the ground and caught a career-best four passes (58 yds). Franklin began the 2012 season with a 214-yard effort at Rice, which included two 70-plus yard runs for touchdowns. He raced 74 yards midway through the first quarter and then navigated 78 yards for a score late in the second quarter. He became the first Bruin to have two runs of over 72 yards in a game. Franklin was named the Pac-12 Player of the Week for his efforts against the Owls. Against Nebraska, Franklin compiled a career-best 217 yards on the ground on 26 carries. He also caught a nine-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter. For the second week in a row, he was named Conference Player of the Week. UCLA had never before had the same offensive player earn back-to-back POW honors from the Pac-12/Pac-10. Franklin ran for a previous career-best 216 (30 carries) in a 2010 contest against Washington State (it was the most since Maurice Jones-Drew ran for 322 at Washington in 2004). In 2010, Franklin appeared in all 12 games and made 10 starts. He led the Bruins in rushing with 1,127 yards (5.3 ave), the 10th-best season mark in school history. He became UCLA s first 1,000-yard rusher since Chris Markey in 2006 (1,107), and totaled the highest yardage by a Bruin since Skip Hicks (1, ). He ran for 118 yards against USC to become the first Bruin back to hit the century mark versus the Trojans since DeShaun Foster in Franklin saw action in all 13 games in 2009, making eight starts. He led the team with 566 rushing yards, 12th in the Pac-10 and No. 6 on UCLA s freshman rushing list. His 372 passing yards against Oregon State marked the third straight game above the 300-yard mark. It was the second-highest total in a single game by a UCLA freshman (Maddox, 409 vs. USC, 1990). In addition, it was the most aerial yards since Drew Olson threw for 510 against Arizona State in The 404 yards of total offense by Hundley are the second-highest total by a UCLA freshman in a single game (Maddox, v. USC) and fifth-highest in school history. Hundley threw for 202 yards and two touchdowns in the opener against Rice. He ran seven times for 68 yards. The redshirt freshman totaled 305 yards, four scoring passes, and 53 rushing yards against Nebraska. He threw for 320 yards against Houston. Hundley threw for two scores and ran for a couple of more touchdowns at Colorado. Hundley s 31 completions at Cal are the most-ever by a Bruin freshman qb and third on the all-time list. His 47 passing attempts tied for the most-ever by a Bruin freshman (Maddox v. USC) and are tied for fifth on the all-time school list. He threw for one score (64 yds) and ran for another (12) against Utah. He moved past Maddox (17) for most scoring passes by a Bruin freshman with his four touchdown performance at ASU. He completed 23 of 28 passes against Arizona (288 yds) and 16 straight attempts during one stretch of the game. Hundley graduated early from Chandler HS in Chandler, AZ and joined the Bruins in Winter Quarter 2011(January). He took part in spring practice at UCLA, but was limited early in the 2011 fall camp due to a summer knee injury. Hundley did not see action in the 2011 season. He participated in a second spring practice in 2012 and won the starting job in pre-season camp. He threw for 2,348 yards as a senior in high school with 20 scoring passes, two interceptions. He also led his team in rushing with 856 yards and nine touchdowns. Following his senior season, he won the passing competition at the UnderArmour All-America Game Skills Challenge. 4 UCLA ON THE RADIO The 2012 season is UCLA s 16th with Clear Channel and the Bruin games are aired on AM 570 KLAC in Southern California. The broadcasts are produced by IMG, UCLA s corporate and media-rights holder. The Los Angeles all-sports station s broadcast includes a two-hour pre-game show (one hour local, one hour network) and a post-game show. Redshirt freshmen Torian White joined true freshman Simon Goines at the tackle positions; redshirt freshman Jake Brendel handled the center spot. Redshirt senior JEFF BACA (#60),who has 42 career starts, started at guard in the first two games of the 2012 season and in the last seven contests. He started at tackle for 11 contests last season before sliding to guard against Illinois in the bowl game. In 2009, he started all 13 games at left guard. In 2008, he appeared in nine games with eight starts at left tackle. True sophomore XAVIER SU A-FILO (#56) returns to UCLA after serving a two-year Mormon mission. Su a Filo started the first 11 games of 2012 at guard. He re-enrolled in school for the 2012 Winter Quarter and was back on the field in the spring. In 2009, he started all 13 games at left tackle which was the most starts by a Bruin true freshman at any non-kicking position. Su a-filo became the first Bruin true freshman to start a season-opener on the offensive side of the ball and earned Honorable Mention All-Pac-10 honors. QUARTERBACK Redshirt senior KEVIN PRINCE (#4) saw his first action of 2012 in the fourth quarter versus Houston and came on at the end at Colorado. He completed his only two passes of the night in the fourth quarter versus Arizona. He started the last eight games (10 overall) of Prince completed his junior season ranked among UCLA s all-time best in total offense (8th), pass completions (8th) and passing yards (9th). He finished with 424 yards rushing (most since Jeff HEAD COACH JIM MORA *25 years NFL experience *Head coach Seattle Seahawks and Atlanta Falcons *NFC Coach of the Year with the Falcons On December 10, 2011, former NFC Coach of the Year Jim Mora was named UCLA's 17th head coach in school history. Mora comes to UCLA after spending part of 2010 and most of 2011 as a television analyst and contributor for the NFL Network and the NFL on Fox. He brings 25 years of NFL coaching acumen with him to UCLA, including four years of NFL head coaching experience while at the helm of the Atlanta Falcons ( ) and the Seattle Seahawks (2009). Mora took over for Mike Holmgren as head coach of the Seattle Seahawks in He had served as assistant head coach and defensive backs coach for Seattle in the 2007 and 2008 campaigns. The Seahawks went 10-6 and fi nished fi rst in the NFC West in the 2007 season and won the Wild Card game in the playoffs. In his initial season as the head coach of the Falcons in 2004, Mora guided the team to an 11-5 record, becoming just the eighth rookie head coach in NFL history to win 11 games and the 11th to bring home a Division title. Atlanta captured the NFC South title and earned an appearance in the NFC Championship game for only the second time in franchise history. Mora was selected as the NFC Coach of the Year. The Falcon s defense improved from a league ranking of 32nd in 2003 to No. 14 overall the next season, fueled by a league-leading and franchise record 48 quarterback sacks. Atlanta topped the NFL in rushing in all three of coach Mora s seasons as head coach. In 2006, Michael Vick became the first quarterback in NFL history to rush for at least 1,000 yards in a season. Mora had joined the Falcons from the San Francisco 49ers where he spent seven seasons, from , including the last five as the defensive coordinator. In his fi rst year, the 49ers finished No. 1 in the NFL in total defense, No. 2 in pass defense (with 25 interceptions), takeaways (41) and run defense, as well as No. 3 in the League in sacks (with 54). The 1998 squad tied for No. 1 in the NFC, and No. 4 in the NFL, with 21 interceptions. In the 2002 and 2003 seasons with San Francisco, the defense finished no worse than fourth in the NFL versus the run and in 2003, produced 42 sacks to tie for second in the conference. The 1997 team advanced to the NFC Championship Game and had three defensive players voted to the Pro Bowl, while the 1998 and 2002 squads captured Wild Card Game wins. Mora worked the previous five seasons ( ) on the staff of his dad, Jim E. Mora, as the secondary coach with the New Orleans Saints. He was sidelined for the balance of that season after undergoing knee surgery on Oct. 23.In 2009, Prince started all 11 games in which he played.
