However, through her fi rst 48 games as a Spartan, she struggled to fi nd a role and a spot on the fl oor. Bell averaged just 2.2 points, 1.8 rebounds and 0.6 assists in 10.2 minutes during that time. However, she was inserted in the starting lineup on Jan. 29 (vs. Penn State) and started the fi nal 11 games last year. As a starter, including the fi rst 20 games this year, Bell is averaging 10.6 points, 5.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 34.2 minutes. So far this season, Bell has stepped up as the team s offensive leader, leading the team with 12.1 points, ranking 21st in the Big Ten. She also ranks among the top-15 in the conference in minutes (fourth, 36.0) and rebounds (12th, 6.5). Bell has increased her scoring 8.0 points from last season (4.1 ppg in ), which is currently the second-best improvement in Spartan history and the second-largest increase from last year among Big Ten scorers. Bell has set career highs in points four times already this season - in each of the fi rst two games, pouring in 19 points vs. UT Arlington and 20 at Eastern Michigan, then posting 21 points at NC State and 25 points vs. Iowa. Her 25 points vs. Iowa were the most by a Spartan since Jan. 29, In the opener vs. UTA, became the fi rst Spartan in over 11 years (Kristen Rasmussen at Cincinnati on March 18, points, eight rebounds, six assists) to reach at least 19 points, eight rebounds and six assists in a game, and also the fi rst MSU player to lead the team in points, rebounds and assists in the same game since Lykendra Johnson vs. Ohio State on Feb. 23, EARNING BACK HER STARTING ROLE Sophomore Kiana Johnson was an important fi gure off the bench for the Spartans since her return to the active roster, but slid back into the starting lineup on Sunday vs. Purdue. In her fi rst 11 games, Johnson is second on the team with 11.2 points, and team highs with 3.6 assists and 2.2 steals in 29.1 minutes. She is also shooting 84.8% (28-for-33) from the free throw line. Her play in Big Ten games this season has increased, leading MSU in points, assists and steals. Johnson ranks seventh in the conference with 3.7 assists and 2.6 steals, while scoring 13.6 points, which is 14th. Johnson has led Michigan State in scoring in each of the last three games, averaging 18.7 points, including posting a career-high 22 points on last Thursday at Nebraska. She has also led the team in assists in four of the last fi ve games. In the last two games, Johnson is 7-for-17 (41.2%) from the 3-point line, after starting the season 2-for-23 (8.7%) in fi rst nine games. For her career, Johnson is third in MSU history with a 1.61 assist-to-turnover ratio. DOING ALL THE DIRTY WORK Senior Courtney Schiffauer may not get all the recognition, but has been a vital part of the early season success for Michigan State. Having moved in and out of the starting lineup throughout her Spartan career, she has fi nally solidifi ed her spot in the starting fi ve this season. Her numbers have been solid across the board this year with 7.0 points, a team-best 6.7 rebounds (which is 10th in the Big Ten) and 2.6 assists, while compiling a 1.3 assistto-turnover ratio. Her distribution of the ball has increase immensely over the last 15 games, averaging 2.5 assists during the span, including setting career highs three times, after averaging 0.9 assists through her fi rst 96 games as a Spartan. Over the last 12 games, Schiffauer has posted her fi rst three double-doubles of her career. At Dayton, she posted a season-high 12 points and a careerhigh tying 11 rebounds; vs. IPFW, she tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds; and at Illinois she had 11 points and again tied her career high with 11 rebounds. PRODUCTIVE MINUTES Sophomore Jasmine Hines came to East Lansing as Michigan s high school career points and rebounds record holder. Thrust into a large role than expected as a freshman due to Madison Williams season-ending injury, Hines was productive when she was on the fl oor. In only 10.3 minutes per game, she averaged 5.1 points and 2.5 rebounds, while shooting a teambest 54.2%. Again a season-ending injury to Williams increased her playing time this season. So far this season, Hines is averaging 9.4 points (third on the team) and 5.5 rebounds in only 20.6 minutes. She also leads the team and is eighth in the conference with 2.7 offensive rebounds per game. Hines leads all Big Ten reserves in total points and rebounds. Iowa s Melissa Dixon is second in points with 8.4, while Indiana s Sasha Chaplin is second in rebounds with 4.2. Johnson and Hines started for the first time this season on Sunday...

5 PICK AND POP Junior Annalise Pickrel started the fi rst 19 games of the season for the Spartans, but was moved to a reserve role on Sunday vs. Purdue. The 6-3 forward is fi fth on the team with 8.9 points, while adding 4.4 rebounds, 1.3 assists and 0.8 steals per game, and committing just 20 turnovers all year. Pickrel has already topped her single-season high in points, rebounds, assists and steals. More importantly, Pickrel has become a threat from behind the 3-point line. She is 37-for-106 (.349) from 3-point so far this season, after making only 19 in her fi rst two seasons (59 games) and shooting 30.2%. Her pointers a game is ninth in the Big Ten, while her 3-point fi eld goal percentage is 13th in the conference. With the graduation of three seniors, and the early season suspension of Kiana Johnson, the Spartans needed someone to step up from behind the arc. Those four accounted for 70.0% of MSU s made 3-pointers in Pickrel is shooting 41.5% (22-53) from the 3-point line at Breslin Center, compared to 28.3% (15-53) in the other games this season. INCREASED CONFIDENCE An uncertain role for her senior season awaited Jasmine Thomas as the season came to a close. Thomas was replaced as the starting point guard by Kiana Johnson by the end of the season, and managed to average only 5.0 points and 1.8 assists, while shooting 33.9% from the fi eld, in 21.4 minutes. However, the nine-game suspension for Johnson to begin this season, opened the door for Thomas to step up as the team s leader in her fi nal season. Thomas has done just that on both ends of the fl oor, ranking second on the team with 3.2 assists and second with 2.0 steals, while ranking sixth on the team with 8.7 points and third with 5.6 rebounds. She ranks 13th in Big Ten in assists and 10th in steals. Turnovers had been an issue for Thomas, maintaining a negative assist-to-turnover ratio over her fi rst three seasons (160 assists, 183 turnovers), but this season, she is 11th in the league with a 1.1 a:to margin (64:56). Thomas has made her last 12 free throws, and 29 of her last 33 (87.9%) attempts from the line. SUCCESS IN THE CLASSROOM As a team, the Spartans currently hold their highest cumulative grade point average in program history of , after fi nishing the fall semester with a GPA. FANS CONTINUE TO PACK THE BRESLIN The Spartans broke their single-season attendance record for the second straight season last year, cementing themselves as one of the top programs in the country in regard to fan support. Last season marked the eighth straight season that the Spartans had been among the nation s top 15 in attendance, averaging 7,505 fans per game, which ranked eighth in the nation and second in the Big Ten. NINE CONSECUTIVE 20-WIN SEASONS MSU posted its ninth-straight 20-win season in , going MSU is one of 13 teams in the nation, and one of two in the Big Ten, to have won at least 20 games in each of the last nine seasons. [Baylor, Bowling Green, Connecticut, Duke, Green Bay, Marist, Middle Tennessee State, Ohio State, Stanford, Temple, Tennessee and Vanderbilt] In Coach Merchant s fi rst fi ve seasons at MSU, the Spartans went (.685). The 115 wins are the second most in the conference during that span, while the total is also the sixth-most by a Big Ten coach all-time in their fi rst fi ve seasons at the helm. In addition, her winning percentage is the 10th-best among Big Ten coaches all-time. DEFENSE, DEFENSE, DEFENSE For the third straight season, Michigan State led the Big Ten in conference games in points allowed last season. The Spartans had won 15 straight before a loss to Illinois on Jan. 26, LACKING EXPERIENCE In terms of years of experience, Michigan State entered the season as the 18th youngest team in the nation. The Spartans have 15 eligible players on their roster with a total of 17 years of playing experience (1.133 years per player). Of the 15 players, 10 are either freshmen or sophomores. WHAT S RETURNING? The Spartans had some large shoes to fi ll with the graduation of three starters for the second-straight season. They returned 58.5% of minutes, and despite losing three starters, return fi ve players who started a game last year. In terms of production, 51% of the points returned, to go along with 61% of rebounds, 61% of assists, 55% of steals and 47% of blocks. Also only 42% of the 3-point fi eld goals from last year returned. Those numbers however do not account for the loss of four potential starters for all or part of the season. Redshirt sophomore center Madison Williams (torn left ACL) and freshman guard Aerial Powers (torn left Achilles tendon) are out for the season, while freshman guard Branndais Agee (stress fracture in left foot) returned for fi ve games, but tore her right ACL in practice on Dec. 13 and will miss the rest of the season. In addition, starting point guard from last season, Kiana Johnson, and redshirt freshman Akyah Taylor, sat out the fi rst nine games of due to a NCAA suspension. AGAINST IN-STATE SCHOOLS Michigan State has had great success against other collegiate programs in the state of Michigan over the past 11 seasons. Since the beginning of the season, the Spartans are 36-1 (.973) against in-state rivals, including a 21-1 (.955) mark under Coach Merchant. All-time, Michigan State is (.751) against other Michigan schools. IN OPENERS All-time, the Spartans are now in season openers, and 19-2 when the opener is in East Lansing. MSU has won its last 12 times when the season opener is at home. Coach Merchant is 4-2 in season openers at MSU, and has won 10 of her last 12, including her time at Eastern Michigan. IN HOME OPENERS All-time, the Spartans are now 33-8 in home openers, and have won 13 of their last 14. Michigan State is 5-1 under head coach Suzy Merchant in its fi rst game at Breslin Center. Coach Merchant has won 11 of her last 12 home openers dating back to her time at Eastern Michigan. INJURY BUG STRIKES AGAIN Redshirt sophomore Madison Williams, and freshmen Branndais Agee and Aerial Powers will all miss the season due to season-ending injuries. Williams will miss the season after partially tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her left knee. The 6-7 center sat out all but three games last season after tearing the same ACL on Nov. 15 against IPFW, and missed the entire season with a torn right ACL. A former McDonalds All-American, Williams totaled only 25 minutes last season, averaging 3.3 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.7 blocks, while shooting 50.0% from the fi eld. Powers tore the Achilles tendon in her left ankle in practice on Oct. 26. Powers, who was slated to start this season, was a top-100 national recruit out of Detroit Country Day. She was a two-time Associated Press Class B Player of the Year, and a three-time allstate selection. As a senior, the 6-0 guard averaged 20.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.4 assists, 3.0 steals and 3.1 blocks. Agee tore the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee in practice on Thursday, Dec. 13. On the season, she averaged 2.8 points and 3.6 rebounds in 13.2 minutes in fi ve games. A highly-touted recruit coming out of Cass Tech, Agee was an honorable mention high school All-American by the Women s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) her senior season. 14 SUZY MERCHANT HEAD COACH SIXTH SEASON CENTRAL MICHIGAN 91 Career Record: (.652) Record at MSU: (.697) Suzy Merchant is in her sixth season as head coach of the Michigan State women s basketball program. Through her fi rst fi ve seasons, Merchant has brought the Spartan program to a level of consistency at the Big Ten and national level. The Spartans have fi nished second or better in the Big Ten in each of the last four seasons, and her conference record of (67.7%) is the 10th-best career winning percentage in the 31- year history of the Big Ten, and is the second highest percentage among active coaches. Nationally, the Spartans have won at least 20 games in each of her fi ve seasons and are one of 22 teams nationally to have advanced to the last four NCAA Tournaments. She was hired at MSU on April 30, 2007, after spending time as a head coach at Eastern Michigan ( ) and Saginaw Valley State ( ). In her 18 years as a head coach, she has won more than 65-percent of her games, collecting a (.652) career record, including (.697) in her six seasons in East Lansing. Last season, Merchant became the fastest Spartan coach to 100 wins. She is also the winningest coach in Eastern Michigan history, compiling a record in her nine seasons. Through her fi rst fi ve seasons at MSU, 17 Spartans have earned All-Big Ten recognition (the most in the conference) and 23 have been named Academic All-Big Ten. A pair of Spartans earned major Big Ten awards in two of the last three seasons - Kalisha Keane was the Big Ten Player of the Year in , following up the Sixth Player of the Year award as a junior, while Lykendra Johnson ( ) and Allyssa DeHaan ( ) were the last two Big Ten Defensive Players of the Year. DeHaan, who fi nished her career second all-time in NCAA history in blocked shots, and Keane were also named All- Americans following their senior seasons. Last season, the Spartans continued a string of nine-straight 20-win seasons, going and advancing to their fourth consecutive NCAA Tournament. MSU went 11-5 in conference play to tie for second in the Big Ten. Seniors Lykendra Johnson and Porsche Poole earned second team All-Big Ten accolades. With the win over Oakland (Nov. 27) last season, Merchant became the fastest head coach to 100 wins as a Spartan, needing only 143 games. Merchant put her stamp on the Spartan program during the season, leading the Spartans to their fi rst outright Big Ten title in school history. MSU went 13-3, winning the conference by two games. The Spartans went 27-6, recording the second most wins in program history, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round. Merchant was named Big Ten Coach of the Year by both the conference s coaches and media, becoming the third Spartan coach to earn that honor. In , Merchant topped the 20-win plateau for sixth-straight season and for the seventh time in her career. The Spartans advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round and fi nished the regular season second in the Big Ten for the second-straight season. In addition to the two major award winners, four Spartans were named All-Big Ten and Lauren Aitch was the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner, the fi rst MSU women s basketball player to earn the award. During the season, the Spartans earned a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 with wins over No. 1-seed Duke and No. 8-seed Middle Tennessee; Merchant s fi rst career NCAA Tournament win. She led the Spartans to a 13-5 record in the Big Ten, tying them for second in the conference. The wins tie for the second most in program history, while the fi nish is the best since the Big Ten Champions. Six Spartans earned postseason Big Ten accolades, led by Allyssa DeHaan taking home second team All-Big Ten honors. After the season, Merchant was named the Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) Women s College Coach of the Year for the second time in her career. In the summer of 2009, Merchant spent time with USA Basketball as an assistant coach for the Women s World University Games team in Belgrade, Serbia. Team USA went undefeated and took home the Gold medal, topping Russia, in the championship game. In her fi rst season at Michigan State, Merchant took the youngest team in the Big Ten to its seventh-straight postseason trip, advancing to the championship game of the WNIT, and tied for the most wins (23) by a fi rst-year Spartan basketball coach in MSU history. The 23 wins tied for the fourth-winningest season in program history and also tied a career-high for Merchant. In addition, the Spartans won 10 conference games for the sixth consecutive season and advanced to the Big Ten Tournament semifi nals for the fi fth-straight year.
