Michigan State won at least 15 games for the 14th-straight season. MSU won at least 10 conference games in 12 of the last 13 seasons. Winning 10 B1G games in 12-straight seasons was the longest active streak in the Big Ten and MSU was one of seven teams in the nation to accomplish the feat. The Spartans have finished third or better in the Big Ten in six of the last seven seasons. Michigan State has gone to the NCAA Tournament 11 times in the last 13 seasons. Suzy Merchant has the most NCAA Tournament appearances by a Spartan head coach. Michigan State finished 10th in the nation and second in the Big Ten in home attendance average with 6,119 fans per game. It marked the 11th-straight season that MSU has been in the top-15 nationally in attendance and the sixth consecutive year in the top-10. Over 97,000 fans packed the Breslin Center to watch MSU women s basketball this season. Sophomores Aerial Powers and Tori Jankoska were All-Big Ten selections in by both the coaches and the media, when Powers was named to the First Team and Jankoska to the Second Team. Aerial Powers was named First-Team All-Big Ten by both the coaches and media. Powers was just the second Michigan State player to earn First-Team honors twice along with Maxann Reese who achieved the feat in 1999 and She is also the first MSU player to earn First-Team honors her first two seasons. Aerial Powers was also named to the Big Ten All-Defensive Team. The Spartans have had a player named to the All-Defensive Team six times in the last eight seasons. Last season, the Huskies ended the season with a stellar 28-3 record, including a 20-2 mark in the GLIAC. Michigan Tech captured first place in the North Division. The Huskies leading scorer last season was Danielle Blake who averaged 13.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. Blake and three other Michigan Tech starters return for the season. As a team, Michigan Tech averaged 68.3 ppg, while allowing only 57.7 ppg. This is the first-ever meeting between the Spartans and the Huskies. AERIAL POWERS GOLD MEDALIST Junior forward Aerial Powers has a very eventful offseason. She helped guide the United States to a gold medal in the World University Games. The U.S. defeated Canada in the gold medal game, as Powers led the team with 27 points and nine rebounds. Powers also led the team in scoring for the tournament with 18.0 points per game on 51.4 percent shooting from the floor. She averaged 6.0 rebounds per game in six games. The United States finished with a perfect 6-0 record after going 3-0 in the group stage and sweeping through the medal round. USA Basketball women s teams have participated in 18 World University Games and collected a record 10 golds, six silvers and one bronze medal. Team USA has won gold medals in the past six World University Games in which it has competed (2001, 2005, 2009, 2011, 2013, 2015). MEET THE NEWCOMERS This season the Spartans welcome seven newcomers plus the return of a former Spartan. Jenna Allen, a 6-3 forward from Bedford, Ind., was a four-year letterwinner for her father Jeff Allen at Bedford North Lawrence High School. She is ranked No. 74 in the nation by ESPN s Hoopgurlz and Dan Olson s Collegiate Girls Basketball Report, and also No. 76 by All-Star Girls Report. As a junior, Allen averaged 15.0 points and 8.7 rebounds, while shooting 65% from the field, while earning first-team all-state honors. Over the past two seasons, BNL has won back-to-back 4A State Championships, totaling a 55-1 record. Kalabrya Gondrezick, a 5-8 guard from Benton Harbor, Mich., has been a four-year starter at Benton Harbor High School under her head coach and mother, Lisa Harvey-Gondrezick. Ranked the No. 36 recruit in the nation by Blue Star Basketball and No. 55 by All- Star Girls Report, she is a three-time first-team all-state selection. Octavia Barnes, a 5-10 forward from Jackson, Miss, attended Raymond High School, playing for head coach Mike Coleman. The Delta Report has named her one of the top five recruits in the state of Mississippi, while The Clarion-Ledger tabbed her as one of the 2014 Dandy Dozen. Victoria Gaines, a 6-1 forward from Merrillville, Ind., who played for head coach Amy Govert at Merrillville High School. She is ranked the No. 23 player in the nation by both ESPN s Hoopgurlz and Dan Olson s Collegiate Girls Basketball Report, No. 56 by Blue Star Basketball and No. 59 by All-Star Girls Report. Morgan Green, a 5-8 guard from San Jose, Calif., who attended Chabot College in Hayward, Calif. last season. She was ranked the No. 2 junior college player by Dan Olson s College Girls Basketball Report. Green missed her senior season at Pacific Collegiate High School and head coach Daniel Kumasaka due to injury, but had a standout junior year. Hana Vesela, a 6-4 center who is a native of Pribor, Czech Republic, attended Brimley High School in Brimley, Mich., as a foreign exchange student last year. She spent her senior year back in the Czech Republic at Sportovni Gymnazium Dany a Emila Zatopkovych. As a junior, Vesala averaged 15.9 points, 10.3 rebounds, 4.4 blocks and 2.6 assists, while taking home first-team all-state honors by multiple media outlets, along with the Eastern Upper Peninsula Conference Player of the Year award. Nathy Dambo comes to the Spartans from Martinique. The 6-3 forward will sit out the first semester of the season. Akyah Taylor returns to the Spartans after two years at St. Francis. The 5-11 forward scored 706 points last season at St. Francis, helping the Lady Cougars reach the NAIA Elite Eight. She played in 16 games as a redshirt freshman at MSU during the season. WELCOME BACK JASMINE After missing much of the season with a concussion, senior center Jasmine Hines will come back for the season. Hines played in eight games last season, averaging 8.4 points and 6.6 rebounds. She was averaging 23.5 minutes per game. SPARTANS RANKED IN PRESEASON POLL Michigan State women s basketball will open the season ranked No. 24 in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll, which was released Tuesday. Complete Rankings This marks the third-straight season that the Spartans are ranked in the Preseason AP Poll after being No. 20 in and No. 14 in It is also the sixth time under head coach Suzy Merchant that MSU has had a preseason AP ranking with a No. 17 ranking in her first year at the helm of the Spartans in , along with No. 10 in and No. 25 in The Spartans are one of four Big Ten Conference teams in this year s Preseason AP Top 25, joined by No. 6 Ohio State, No. 9 Maryland and No. 19 Northwestern. Additionally, Rutgers and Iowa were among others receiving votes. Those three opponents make up a total of five preseason ranked foes on the Spartans schedule, along with No. 5 Baylor, No. 8 Louisville. POWERS AND JANKOSKA EARN PRESEASON HONORS Michigan State women s basketball was selected third in the Big Ten preseason coaches polls. Junior forward Aerial Powers and junior guard Tori Jankoska both earned Preseason All-Big Ten honors. Powers, was second in the Big Ten and 10th in the nation in scoring last season, averaging 21.9 points per game. She also ended the season with a school record 24 doubledoubles which was first in the Big Ten and tied for second in the nation. She earned First- Team All-Big Ten honors and was named to the All-Defensive team. Powers, who earned WBCA and Associated Press All-American honors last season, was an unanimous selection by both the coaches and the media. She was one of three unanimous selections by the coaches and one of two in the media poll. Jankoska was second on the team in scoring, averaging 17.5 point per game last season, which was fifth in the league. She also earned Second-Team All-Big Ten honors last season. 7 SUZY MERCHANT HEAD COACH ninith SEASON CENTRAL MICHIGAN 91 Career Record: (.648) Record at MSU: (.673) The level of success is undeniable. Suzy Merchant, entering her ninth season as head coach of the Michigan State women s basketball program, has proven to be one of the best coaches in Michigan State history and a force in the Big Ten Conference. Through her first eight seasons, Merchant has brought the Spartan program to the upper echelon at the Big Ten and national level. The Spartans have finished third or better in the Big Ten in seven of the last eight seasons, and her conference record of (65.4%) is the 10th-best career winning percentage in the 32-year history of the Big Ten and is the second-highest percentage among active coaches. The Spartans have won at least 20 games in seven of her eight seasons. The Great Lakes State native was hired at MSU on April 30, 2007, after spending time as a head coach at Eastern Michigan ( ) and Saginaw Valley State ( ). In her 20 years as a head coach, she has won more than 64-percent of her games, collecting a (.648) career record, including (.673) in her eight seasons in East Lansing. Merchant became the fastest Spartan coach to 100 wins. She is also the winningest coach in Eastern Michigan history, compiling a record in her nine seasons. Through her first eight seasons at MSU, 27 Spartans have earned All-Big Ten recognition (the most in the conference) and 42 have been named Academic All-Big Ten. A pair of Spartans have earned major Big Ten awards - Kalisha Keane was the Big Ten Player of the Year in , following up the Sixth Player of the Year award as a junior, while Lykendra Johnson ( ) and Allyssa DeHaan ( ) were named Big Ten Defensive Players of the Year. DeHaan, who finished her career second all-time in NCAA history in blocked shots, and Keane were also named All-Americans following their senior seasons. In , Aerial Powers became the first Spartan freshman to earn first-team All-Big Ten honors. Last season, Powers earned All-American honors after setting a single-season record with 24 double-doubles. The Spartans suffered through an injury-plagued season, finishing overall and 7-11 in Big Ten action. Powers and Tori Jankoska earned All-Big Ten honors with Power being named to the First Team and Jankoska to the second. The Spartans have been packing the stands as well, finishing 10th in the nation and second in the Big Ten in attendance, averaging 6,119 fans per game. In , MSU captured a share of the Big Ten title with a overall record and a stellar 13-3 league record. The Green and White have now had 11-straight 20-win season. The Spartans qualified for the Big Dance for a school-record sixth-straight season, advancing to the second round. Powers was also named to the All-Freshman team, while Annalise Pickrel was named to the second-team, Klarissa Bell, Jankoska and Bella Mills picked up honorable mention honors. In , Michigan State overcame adversity to go 25-9, the third-most wins in program history. MSU went 10-6 in Big Ten play to tie for third and won at least 10 conference games for the 11th-straight season. They made it to the Big Ten Tournament Championship game for the first time under Merchant and for just the second time in program history. Three Spartans earned All-Big Ten honors with junior Bell being named to the third team, and senior Jasmine Thomas and sophomore Kiana Johnson added as honorable mention selections. Also, the team had a program-record seven Academic All-Big Ten honors. In , the Spartans continued their string of 20-win seasons, going and advancing to their fourth-consecutive NCAA Tournament. MSU went 11-5 in conference play to tie for second in the Big Ten. Seniors Lykendra Johnson and Porsche Poole earned second team All-Big Ten accolades. With the win over Oakland (Nov. 27) last season, Merchant became the fastest head coach to 100 wins as a Spartan, needing only 143 games. Merchant put her stamp on the Spartan program during the season, leading the Spartans to their first outright Big Ten title in school history. MSU went 13-3, winning the conference by two games. The Spartans went 27-6, recording the second-most wins in program history, and advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round. Merchant was named Big Ten Coach of the Year by both the conference s coaches and media, becoming the third Spartan coach to earn that honor. In , Merchant topped the 20-win plateau for the sixth-straight season and for the seventh time in her career. The Spartans advanced to the NCAA Tournament Second Round and finished the regular season second in the Big Ten for the second-straight season. In addition to the two major award winners (Keane and Johnson), four Spartans were named All-Big Ten and Lauren Aitch was the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award winner, the first MSU women s basketball player to earn the award. During the season, the Spartans earned a No. 9 seed in the NCAA Tournament and advanced to the Sweet 16 with wins over No. 1-seed Duke and No. 8-seed Middle Tennessee; Merchant s first career NCAA Tournament win. She led the Spartans to a 13-5 record in the Big Ten, tying them for second in the conference. The wins tie for the second most in program history, while the finish is the best since the Big Ten Champions. Six Spartans earned postseason Big Ten accolades, led by Allyssa DeHaan taking home second team All-Big Ten honors. After the season, Merchant was named the Coaches Association of Michigan (BCAM) Women s College Coach of the Year for the second time in her career. In the summer of 2009, Merchant spent time with USA Basketball as an assistant coach for the Women s World University Games team in Belgrade, Serbia. Team USA went undefeated and took home the Gold medal, topping Russia, in the championship game. In her first season at Michigan State, Merchant took the youngest team in the Big Ten to its seventh-straight postseason trip, advancing to the championship game of the WNIT, and tied for the most wins (23) by a first-year Spartan basketball coach in MSU history. In addition, the Spartans won 10 conference games for the sixth consecutive season and advanced to the Big Ten Tournament semifinals for the fifth-straight year. Individually, Allyssa DeHaan earned first team All-Big Ten honors, while a pair of freshmen - Kalisha Keane and Brittney Thomas - were honorable mention all-conference and on the All-Freshman Team. In her first eight years in the Greater Lansing area, Merchant has gone to great lengths to become an integral part of the community. In her time off the court and out of the office, Merchant can be seen at many community service events in the Great Lansing area. She has been an Honorary Chair for numerous events, including Ele s Place, Sparrow Foundation s Hike for Hospice, Women Working Wonders, MSU Children s Health Initiative, Women s Center of Lansing, Haven House, Ronald McDonald House, Advent House Ministries, Old Newsboys Shoe and Coat Drive, and Muscular Dystrophy Association. During her tenure with the Eagles, Merchant guided Eastern Michigan to a record of (.618), including three 20-win seasons, three postseason appearances and two Mid-American Conference West Division titles. Before coaching at Eastern Michigan, Merchant spent three seasons at Saginaw Valley State, posting a (.651) record. Prior to becoming a head coach, Merchant was the top assistant for three years at Oakland University ( ). A four-year starter and three-year captain at Central Michigan ( ), Merchant holds Chippewa records for assists with 463 and single-season assists with 156, and is tied for first in singlegame assists with 11. She also finished her career third-best in made 3-point field goals with 75. A native of Traverse City, Mich., Merchant was a three-sport standout at Traverse City Central High School, lettering in basketball, volleyball and softball. She earned honorable mention All-America honors by USA Today and was a two-time Class A all-state selection in basketball. She also earned all-state honors in volleyball. During the summer of 2010, she was inducted into the Traverse City Central H.S. Hall of Fame.
