12 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE SAMFORD OPPONENTS RECORDS REVIEW PLAYERS COACHES OUTLOOK QUICK FACTS T he Southern Conference [SoCon], which began its 88th season of intercollegiate competition in 2008, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of student-athletes, building lifelong leaders and role models. SoCon has been on the forefront of innovation to develop creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. SoCon established the first conference basketball tournament (1921), tackled the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922) and developed women s championships (1984). It was the first conference to institute the 3-point goal in basketball (1980). SoCon is the nation s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Only the Big Ten (1896), Missouri Valley (1907), Pacific 10 (1915) and Southwestern Athletic (1920) conferences are older. Academic excellence is a major part of SoCon s tradition. Hundreds of S SoCon student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All- America and All-District teams. Nineteen Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. SoCon consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast, and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. SoCon offices are located in Beaumont Mill in Spartanburg, S.C. A textile mill that was in operation from 1880 until 1999, Beaumont Mill was renovated in 2004, and offers the league first-class meeting areas and offices as well as a spacious library for SoCon s historical documents. MEMBERSHIP HISTORY On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association s [SIAA] 30 members met at Atlanta s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. At the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (now Georgia Tech), Kentucky, John Iamarino Commissioner Maryland, Mississippi A&M (now Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Dr. S. V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman, and N. W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletics conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA by the early 1920s, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season, and many schools went several years between playing some conference members. In 1920, the SIAA voted down proposed rules that an athlete must be in a college a year before playing on its teams and refused to abolish a rule permitting athletes to play summer baseball for money. Play began in the fall of A year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league: Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (now LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925, and Duke was added in By the 1930s, membership in the SoCon had reached 23 schools. C. P. Sally Miles of Virginia Tech, president of SoCon, called the annual league meeting to order on Dec. 9, 1932, at the Farragut Hotel in Knoxville, Tenn. Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorganizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of that new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. Sanford stated that the division was made along geographical lines. Florida s Dr. J. J. Tigert, acting as spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as SoCon had grown too large. The resignations were accepted, and the withdrawing schools formed the new league that began play in Geoff Cabe Senior Associate Commissioner Sue Arakas Associate Commissioner Brandon Neff Director of Championships SoCon continued with membership of 10 institutions: Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina, Virginia, VMI, Virginia Tech and Washington & Lee. By 1952, SoCon included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference, which began play in The revamped SoCon included The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 institutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, Samford, UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina and Wofford. LEADERSHIP SoCon named its first commissioner in December Duke head football coach Wallace Wade made the transition from Blue Devil coach to athletics administration as the first person at the helm of the conference. Lloyd Jordan replaced Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and served a 14-year term until Ken Germann became the league head in Germann was commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league s expansion to include women s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart, who spearheaded the transfer of the league office from Charlotte, N.C. to Asheville, N.C. Wright Waters succeeded Hart upon his retirement in Under Waters leadership, SoCon expanded to 12 members, added three women s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball tournament. Waters, who is currently the commissioner of the Sun Belt Conference, was followed by Alfred B. White in A veteran member of the NCAA Mike Mitchell Senior Account Executive Jonathan Caskey Associate Director of Media Relations 68 SAMFORD SOCCER

13 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE office, White introduced the current conference logo and elevated SoCon s commitment to the marketing and development of corporate partners. Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001 to 2005 and orchestrated SoCon s move from Asheville, N.C. to Spartanburg, S.C. Under his leadership, SoCon increased its marketing and promotional efforts. John Iamarino was named commissioner of SoCon on Jan. 2, He has promoted the conference through an ambitious agenda that has improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters, and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the conference and its member institutions. CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY The first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in Atlanta in The North Carolina Tar Heels won the tournament and became the first recognized league champion in any sport. The Southern Conference Tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. Commissioner Germann spearheaded SoCon s expansion to include women s athletics during the season. That year, league championships were held in volleyball, basketball and tennis. Cross-country joined the mix in 1985, and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track championships in SoCon instituted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women s athletics programs in the conference. From its humble beginnings, women s athletics have become an integral part of SoCon and its success. SoCon declares champions in 10 men s sports football, soccer, cross-country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, baseball, tennis and golf and nine women s sports soccer, volleyball, cross-country, basketball, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis, golf and softball. 18 LIBBY THE BULLDOG SAMFORD OPPONENTS RECORDS REVIEW PLAYERS COACHES OUTLOOK QUICK FACTS LIBBY or the first time in several years, Samford has a Flive bulldog mascot. Libby, owned by David and Rhoda Oser, is registered with the American Kennel Club as Oser s Lady Liberty. Libby s name is especially fitting since the school s namesake, Frank Park Samford, and other significant benefactors in the university s history were associated with Liberty National Life Insurance Company in Birmingham. Included in this group were Andrew Gerow Hodges, the Beeson family and F. Page Seibert, the namesake of Samford s football stadium. Libby s sweetness, sparkle, bulldog tenacity and love for people has come down through six generations of breeding, which includes 23 champions. She enjoys the Samford campus, especially when she is moving sometimes running with students. True to her bulldog nature, Libby can stand her ground and will block any comers. As a puppy, Libby was busy, sometimes mischievous and loving. The Osers say she has not changed. David has bred and shown bulldogs for 30 years. During that time, he taught business at a New York high school and Stony Brook University. After retiring from teaching, he has written two novels and is writing a third. He says that working with dogs has developed patience and understanding that helped him as a volunteer mentor for at-risk students. For more information, go to Rhoda spent many years teaching English, sharing the love of language, writing, Shakespeare and the world of film with high school students. For 20 years, she worked with students at an alternative high school. She once again looks forward to working with young adults at Samford through her involvement with Libby. Rhoda s love of bulldogs began when she talked her husband into visiting the home of a breeder. One of the bulldogs went home with them and changed things forever. The Osers began showing, breeding and loving these delightful as well as stubborn dogs. For many years, Samford s live bulldog mascot lived at the home of then-president Leslie S. Wright and his wife, Lolla. Mrs. Wright enjoyed sharing the mascot with students and the comunity. Other mascots through the years have been provided by various alumni and friends of the university. 74 SAMFORD SOCCER
