12 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE SAMFORD OPPONENTS RECORDS REVIEW PLAYERS COACHES OUTLOOK QUICK FACTS THE SOUTHERN CONFERENCE T he Southern Conference [SoCon], which began its 89th season of intercollegiate competition in 2009, is a national leader in emphasizing the development of student- athletes, building lifelong leaders and role models. SoCon has been on the forefront of innovation to develop creative solutions to address issues facing intercollegiate athletics. SoCon established the first conference basketball tour nament (1921), tackled the issue of freshmen eligibility (1922) and developed women s championships (1984). It was the first conference to institute the 3-point goal in basketball (1980). SoCon is the nation s fifth-oldest NCAA Division I collegiate athletic association. Academic excellence is a major part of SoCon s tradition. Hundreds of SoCon student-athletes have been recognized on ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All- America and All-District teams. Nineteen Rhodes Scholarship winners have been selected from conference institutions. SoCon consists of 12 members in five states throughout the Southeast, and sponsors 19 varsity sports and championships that produce participants for NCAA Division I Championships. MEMBERSHIP HISTORY On Feb. 25, 1921, representatives from 14 of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Association s [SIAA] 30 members met at Atlanta s Piedmont Hotel to establish the Southern Intercollegiate Conference. At the inaugural meeting were officials from Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute (now Auburn), Clemson, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology (now Georgia Tech), Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi A&M (now John Iamarino Commissioner Mississippi State), North Carolina, North Carolina State, Tennessee, Virginia, Virginia Polytechnic Institute (now Virginia Tech) and Washington & Lee. Dr. S. V. Sanford of Georgia was chosen as acting chairman, and N. W. Dougherty of Tennessee was named secretary. The decision to form a new athletics conference was motivated by the desire to have a workable number of conference games for each league member. With 30 schools in the SIAA, it was impossible to play every school at least once during the regular season. Play began in the fall of A year later, six more schools joined the fledgling league: Tulane (which had attended the inaugural meeting but had elected not to join), Florida, Louisiana (now LSU), Mississippi, South Carolina and Vanderbilt. VMI joined in 1925, and Duke was added in By the 1930s, membership in SoCon had reached 23 schools. In 1932, Sanford announced that 13 institutions west and south of the Appalachian Mountains were reorga - nizing as the Southeastern Conference. Members of that new league included Alabama, Alabama Polytechnic Institute, Florida, Georgia, Georgia School of Technology, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Mississippi A&M, University of the South, Tennessee, Tulane and Vanderbilt. Florida s Dr. J. J. Tigert, spokesman for the withdrawing group, regretted the move but believed it was necessary as SoCon had grown too large. By 1952, SoCon included 17 colleges and universities. Another split occurred when seven schools Clemson, Duke, Maryland, North Carolina, North Carolina State, South Carolina and Wake Forest departed to form the Atlantic Coast Conference, which began play in The revamped SoCon included Geoff Cabe Senior Associate Commissioner Sue Arakas Associate Commissioner Doug King Associate Commissioner for Compliance The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, George Washington, Richmond, VMI, Virginia Tech, Washington & Lee, West Virginia and William & Mary. Today, the league continues to thrive with a membership that includes 12 insti - tutions and a footprint that spans five states: Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Alabama and Georgia. Current league members are Appalachian State, College of Charleston, Chattanooga, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, Samford, UNC Greensboro, Western Carolina and Wofford. LEADERSHIP SoCon named its first commissioner, former Duke head football coach Wallace Wade, in December Lloyd Jordan replaced Wade as the commissioner in 1960 and served until Ken Germann became the league head in Germann was commissioner for 13 years and orchestrated the league s expansion to include women s athletics. In 1987, he was succeeded by Dave Hart, who spearheaded the transfer of the league office from Charlotte, N.C. to Asheville, N.C. Wright Waters succeeded Hart in SoCon expanded to 12 members, added three women s sports and posted record revenue from the basketball tournament. Waters was followed by Alfred B. White in A veteran member of the NCAA office, White introduced the current con ference logo and elevated SoCon s com mitment to the marketing and development of corporate partners. Danny Morrison headed the conference from 2001 to 2005 and orchestrated SoCon s move from Asheville, N.C. to Spartanburg, S.C. John Iamarino was named commissioner of SoCon on Jan. 2, He has promoted Brandon Neff Director of Championships Mike Mitchell Senior Account Executive 60 SAMFORD SOCCER

13 SOUTHERN CONFERENCE the conference through an ambitious agenda that has improved competition, upgraded compliance-related matters, and increased the marketing and brand awareness of the con - ference and its member institutions. CHAMPIONSHIP HISTORY The first Southern Conference Championship was the league basketball tournament held in The tournament remains the oldest of its kind in college basketball. Jason Yaman Director of Media Relations Jonathan Caskey Associate Director of Media Relations Commissioner Germann spearheaded SoCon s expansion to include women s athletics during the season. That year, league championships were held in volley ball, basketball and tennis. Crosscountry joined the mix in 1985, and the league began holding indoor and outdoor track champion ships in SoCon insti tuted golf and softball championships in the spring of 1994 and added soccer in the fall of The Germann Cup, named in honor of the former commissioner, annually recognizes the top women s athletics programs in the conference. 18 LIBBY THE BULLDOG SAMFORD OPPONENTS RECORDS REVIEW PLAYERS COACHES OUTLOOK QUICK FACTS LIBBY amford s live bulldog mascot. Libby, is owned S by David Oser and is registered with the American Kennel Club as Oser s Lady Liberty. Libby s name is especially fitting since the school s namesake, Frank Park Samford, and other significant benefactors in the university s history were associated with Liberty National Life Insurance Company in Birmingham. Included in this group were Andrew Gerow Hodges, the Beeson family and F. Page Seibert, the namesake of Samford s football stadium. Libby s sweetness, sparkle, bulldog tenacity and love for people has come down through six generations of breeding, which includes 23 champions. She enjoys the Samford campus, especially when she is moving sometimes running with students. True to her bulldog nature, Libby can stand her ground and will block any comers. As a puppy, Libby was busy, sometimes mischievous and loving. Oser says she has not changed. Oser has bred and shown bulldogs for 30 years. During that time, he taught business at a New York high school and Stony Brook University. After retiring from teaching, he has written two novels and is writing a third. He says that working with dogs has developed patience and understanding that helped him as a volunteer mentor for at-risk students. For more information, go to For many years, Samford s live bulldog mascot lived at the home of then-president Leslie S. Wright and his wife, Lolla. Mrs. Wright enjoyed sharing the mascot with students and the community. Other mascots through the years have been provided by various alumni and friends of the university. 66 SAMFORD SOCCER
