The Eagles saw their record slip to 2-7 following Sunday s loss to No. 2 ranked South Carolina as the Gamecocks superior size and hot shooting were too much for Winthrop to handle. A LOOK AT THE MATCHUP Winthrop is looking for its fi rst road win of the year after losing the previous seven. They will be facing a tough task against an Auburn program that is looking for a bit of revenge following Winthrop s at home on Nov. 29, Winthrop outshot and outrebounded the Tigers in that game and got a pair of free throws by Aliyah Kilpatrick with 13 seconds left to pull off the upset. THE SERIES HISTORY Winthrop and Auburn are meeting for just the second time. The Tigers bring a 6-2 record into the contest. They are 2-1 on their home court. WINTHROP VS. THE SEC The Eagles have a record vs. current members of the SEC, but since 1987 when Winthrop became a NCAA member, the record is 2-10 with those two wins coming against Mississippi State in Dec., 2012), and Auburn last year. THE STREAK CONTINUES Junior forward Erica Williams has scored in double fi gures in 23 straight games. She kept streak alive with 10 points against South Carolina. She entered the Carolina game coming off three straight double-doubles and earned Big South Player of the Week honors last week after scoring a season-high 24 points in Winthrop s victory over Gardner- Webb.. ANOTHER HONOR FOR WHITAKER Arianne Whitaker captured her second Big South Conference Freshman of the Week honor for her performances against Furman and NC Central two weeks ago. She was also recognized following the first week of the season. NEWEST ADDITION TO 1,000-POINT CLUB Erica Williams became the 18th player in Winthrop women s history to reach 1,000 career points with her 17-point effort at Duke on Nov. 15. She now has 1,130 points. NUNN OUT FOR THE SEASON Winthrop s 6-3 senior center Schaquilla Nunn is likely lost for the season with a broken foot which occured in practice last week. Nunn ranked 9th in the nation in blocked shots (3.63) and 15th in rebounding (11.1) last season and averaged a double-double with 13.7 points per game to go along with her rebounds. RESPECT FROM THE LEAGUE Winthrop has been picked to finish second in the 2016 Big South Conference race behind perennial league power Liberty. The No. 2 pick is the highest the program has ever received in 29 years as a Big South member. PRESEASON ACCOLADES Three Winthrop players received preseason accolades from the Big South Conference during Media Day on Oct. 24. Nunn and junior power forward Erica Williams were voted First Team All-Big South while redshirt junior guard Aliyah Kilpatrick was selected on the Second Team All-BSC squad. Both Nunn and Williams earned All-Big South First Team honors in A LOOK AT COACH KEVIN COOK Kevin Cook is beginning his fourth year as head coach of the Eagles and his ninth year overall as a college head coach. He is at Winthrop and is overall which includes four years as Gallaudet University, the world s only all-deaf college. He spent 10 years as an assistant with the WNBA s Houston Comets.
