On the Web PennAthletics.com On #pennwbb On Facebook Like us: PennWomensBasketball Following their first Big 5 win in nearly two years, the Quakers (1-3) look to carry momentum through a busy week - starting with Bucknell at The Palestra at 7 p.m. Monday and a short trip to New York City to take on St. Francis (N.Y.) at 7 p.m. Wednesday. In the Series vs. Bucknell/St. Francis This will mark the first meeting between Penn and Bucknell in more than 12 years and the seventh meeting overall. The programs split the first six games with the Bison claiming all three encounters in the 1980s. But the Quakers have won three straight, including the last meeting on Jan. 2, an win at The Palestra. Meanwhile, Penn will play St. Francis (N.Y.) for the fifth straight year and the seventh time overall. The Quakers are 6-0 all-time against the Terriers - all of which came by double-digits before last season s overtime win at The Palestra. Last Time Out Alyssa Baron s 1,000th career point came at a huge moment as the Penn held off La Salle, 65-56, in the Big 5 opener for both teams Friday night at The Palestra. La Salle took its largest lead of the game, 46-44, with 8:37 to play. But that last just 13 seconds when Baron sunk her milestone basket with a go-ahead three-pointer. Penn never trailed again. La Salle tied the game at at the 6:10 mark of the opening half, but Renee Busch and Rayne Connell hit back-to-back threes for a six-point edge. The Quakers had built the lead without their leading scorer, but Baron knocked home her first basket of the night at the end of the half - a three that gave the Red and Blue a advantage heading into the break. La Salle finally tied the game at with 9:03 to go and went on top for a brief moment before Baron s three changed momentum. After Baron s historic basket, junior Courtney Wilson scored on back-to-back trips and the Quakers led with 6:58 to play. Busch connected on another three for a edge with 3:21 remaining. The Quakers salted away the final few minutes. Up Next Penn has a busy stretch coming up before the holiday break. After the Red and Blue host Bucknell for the first time since 2000 on Monday, its a pair of games in New York City, the first against St. Francis (N.Y.) on Wednesday and the next against LIU-Brooklyn on Sunday, Dec. 9 at 2 p.m. Catching the Games Video and live stats will be available on the Penn Sports Network (PSN) at PennAthletics.com. For the third straight year the women s basketball team is dedicating its entire season to the fight against several diseases and the team needs your help. In its first two years, 109 donors have joined the Charge for a Cure program which helped the team raise nearly $7,000. Each month of the season will be devoted to help a specific disease with personal ties to CHARGE FOR A CURE Charges to date Last Game: 1 November Total: Season Total: 6 the program The Michael J. Fox Foundation, Go4theGoal, the American Cancer Society, The Dave Bryan Ride on Fund, and the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation of America. At the end of each month, the coaches will total the number of offensive charges the Quakers have taken as a team and fans can pledge a donation per charge. This month the Quakers will be taking charges for the Go4theGoal Foundation, but the team is turning to its fans to lend a hand in its efforts. Go to PennAthletics.com or contact assistant coach Kara Cassidy (karacass@upenn.edu) to find out how you can help! Reaching 1,000 Junior Alyssa Baron became the 19th Penn women s player to reach 1,000 career points. She is the thirdfastest Quaker to accomplish that milestone (60 games) and the first since Carrie Biemer topped the landmark in Only Penn s all-time leading scorer (man or woman), Diana Caramanico (48 games) and Mandy West (52 games) were faster to 1,000 points. A two-time Ivy scoring champion, Baron became the first freshman in Ivy history to lead the league in scoring. She now has 1,005 points in her career, which ranks 18th all-time at Penn. That is eight points behind Beth Stegner ( ) for 17th and 19 points behind Katarina Poulsen ( ) for 16th-place on Penn s all-time scoring list. Topping the Big 5 Its a daunting task each year for the Quakers to take on the Big 5. The conference for city bragging rights includes the other four Division I schools in Philadelphia Temple, La Salle, Saint Joseph s and Villanova. The first three are in the Atlantic-10 conference and the Wildcats are in Big East. Penn lost 24 straight Big 5 games after a win over Saint Joseph s on Dec. 1, 2004 at Hagan Arena, 64-57, and were 1-30 since that time against the Big 5. But the Quakers have now won two of the last three against their city rivals at The Palestra and are now atop the Big 5 standings at 1-0. Print Media Seating The Palestra can seat approximately 80 members of the working press. Print media reporters and electronic media not broadcasting the game are seated in the first two rows at the north end of the floor (behind the benches). The media room will be available during and following each game to transmit stories. The press row phone number at The Palestra is Photographers Photographer locations are behind each baseline. Flash photography is prohibited at all times per NCAA regulations. Statistics Flash statistics, play-by-play, halftime and postgame statistics are distributed during and after each contest. A full statistical pack will be available following the game. Postgame Interview Policy Following the end of each home basketball game, Penn women s basketball coach Mike McLaughlin and selected players will meet the media in the Press Room, which is located underneath the stands behind the team benches. Generally, visiting coaches and players will go first in the interview room followed by Coach McLaughlin and Penn players. The Penn locker room is closed to the media at all times. Close Calls All four of Penn s games have been decided by single digits. Penn suffered three straight losses to start the season. But those came by a combined 17 points (average of 5.7 points per game). In two of those losses, Penn was within one possession and had the ball with under 10 seconds to play. Last season, the Red and Blue were 5-5 in games decided by 10 points or less. Penn Trends Penn has won seven of their last nine non-conference home games... Penn had 19 assists against La Salle - second-most in head coach Mike McLaughlin s four-year tenure, while in the same game, the Quakers had just 10 turnovers - third-fewest under McLaughlin... Alyssa Baron has started 60 consecutive games for the Quakers... Junior Meghan McCullough played in 59 straight games dating back to the season opener prior to missing the matchup with La Salle on Friday. Penn Picked to Finish Fourth in Ivy League After finishing last season in sixth place with a 6-8 Ivy League record, the Quakers were picked to finish fourth in the Ivy Preseason Media Poll. Last season, Penn was also picked to finish fourth in the Ivy League, but ended up finishing sixth for for the second season in a row. Two Penn Wins Would mark a three-game winning streak.... be the fourth straight against Bucknell.... make the Quakers 7-0 all-time against St. Francis (N.Y.).... make the Quakers 3-3 on the year and 2-1 at The Palestra. A Penn Win Would mark two wins in the last three games.... make the Quakers 2-4 on the year. Two Penn Losses Would mark seven defeats in the last eight games.... make the Quakers 1-5 on the year and 0-3 on the road.... be less good than two wins IVY WOMEN'S PRESEASON MEDIA POLL First-Place Votes in Parentheses School Points 1.
