1 GAME STORYLINES 4The series is even in the all-time record, beginning in 1936 and sitting at an tie. However, the Spartans hold a advantage in Honolulu. 4Former consensus All-American and 12-year NFL lineman Chris Naeole leads the team in his second home game as interim head coach. He is 0-2 so far. 4UH is riding an eight-game losing streak and has dropped three straight at home. SJSU has fallen in its past two games. Last year, UH snapped a schoolrecord 17-consecutive road loss streak with a 13-0 shutout at SJSU. 4The last three games of the series have been decided by less than 13 points. 4A loss on Saturday would extend the Mountain West losing streak to nine games. This is the last opportunity for a MW win in Despite a typically stout pass defense, the Rainbow Warriors have allowed over 200 yards passing in each of the past two games. 4Running back Paul Harris has had four 100+ yard games this season, including the last two games, and needs 213 yards to reach 1,000 yards rushing this season he would become the first over 1k since 2010 and only the second since UH used both quarterbacks Ikaika Woolsey and Max Wittek versus Fresno State and amassed 245 yards passing. WE ARE THE RAINBOW WARRIORS When referring to the UH football team, please use the nickname Rainbow Warriors. In an effort to standardize its nicknames, on July 1, 2013, the University of Hawai i officially changed its men s team nickname to Rainbow Warriors. The school s women s teams are still referred to as Rainbow Wahine. The word Wahine (pronounced wah-heenay) means woman in the Hawaiian language. The rainbow has been part of UH s nickname since WHAT S AN OKINA? What s that punctuation mark in the word Hawai i? A: In the Hawaiian language, it s called an okina, which translated literally in English means separator. Phonetically it is referred to as a glottal stop, similar to the sound that would be made in the English oh-oh. The okina is actually a letter in the Hawaiian language and typed out looks like a backwards, inverted apostrophe. The practice of the UH Sports Media Relations office is to use the okina in all Hawaiian words in which they occur. 4 HAWAI I INTERIM HEAD COACH/COACHING STAFF HAWAI I VS. SAN JOSÉ STATE (NOV. 21, 2015) CHRIS NAEOLE Interim Head Coach 3rd Season at UH Colorado, 1997 Overall Record: 0-2 MW Record: 0-2 NFL veteran and Kahuku High School graduate Chris Naeole took over as interim head coach for UH on November 1, 2015, beginning the season as the Assistant Head Coach and offensive line coach. He has helped to transform the offensive line unit into a hard-nosed and physical group, modeled after his style of play as an All-American and NFL guard. Entering his third season with the Hawai i coaching staff, Naeole welcomed the opportunity to open with three starters from last season, including three-time all-mw honorable mention Ben Clarke at tackle. Clarke joined with Dejon Allen and Brenden Urban for a combined 54 starts. Naeole, a 1992 Kahuku High School graduate, played collegiately at Colorado, where he was a consensus All-American as a senior in He was a three-year starter for the Buffs and only allowed one sack over his career. Naeole was the recipient of the John Mack Award, given to team s Most Outstanding Offensive Player. He graduated from the university with a degree in sociology and a 3.0 grade point average. Raised in Ka a awa, O ahu, Naeole became the state of Hawai i s then-highest draft pick, having been selected by the New Orleans Saints with the 10th overall pick in the 1997 NFL Draft. Naeole was also the highest-selected guard since 1988, and first Colorado offensive lineman selected in the first round since He spent 12 years playing for both the Saints ( ) and Jacksonville Jaguars ( ) before an injury ended his career in the middle of the season. He missed only one NFL game prior to the injury and started 150 of 154 career games. Following his playing career, Naeole began coaching, spending his first three years as the defensive line coach at Iolani School under head coach Wendell Look. He also has participated in NFL summer internships with the Jaguars and Green Bay Packers in recent years and made guest-coaching appearances at clinics and camps throughout Hawai i, New Orleans and Jacksonville. Naeole earned All-America honors as a senior at Kahuku. As a two-way star, he garnered first-team accolades by Prep Football Report, second-team from Blue Chip Report and honorable mention from USA Today. In addition to playing offensive guard, he was a defensive tackle for the Red Raiders and recorded COACHING STAFF MID-SEASON LEADERSHIP CHANGE FOR THE RAINBOW WARRIORS On Nov. 1, Hawai i Athletics Director David Matlin announced that head football coach Norm Chow had been relieved of his duties, effective immediately, naming Chris Naeole as interim head coach. I d like to thank Coach Chow for his dedication to our football program for the past four years, Matlin said. Ultimately, we feel this decision is in the best interest of the University and Athletics Department and we need to move in a different direction. Coach Chow should be commended for helping our football program achieve all-time highs in APR scores and graduation rates. Chow was in his four seasons with the Rainbow Warriors, including a 2-7 record this year after Saturday s loss to Air Force. He took over the program in Coach Naeole spoke for a few moments with local media about his new role in the program and looking ahead to the next four games, beginning at UNLV on Saturday, Nov. 7. I m looking to transition and help this university to the best it can be, Naeole said. I have a new-found respect for the university coaching here for the past three years and I just want to leave it in a better place than I found it. I m going to coach, I m going to work hard. I expect the most out of the coaches that are here. The players, I m going to ask and demand a lot from them in the next four weeks and let s see where the chips lie at the end, Naeole added. On Monday (Nov. 2) morning, Coach Naeole held a team meeting with the student-athletes and started off his first official week as interim head coach. Following the meeting, representative players from the offense and defense--seniors Ben Clarke and Julian Gener--met with the media, in addition to Matlin. We still have four games and Coach Naeole and the rest of the coaches are going to do everything they can to make sure it s a good last four, Clarke said. Clarke s defensive counterpart echoed that sentiment, with the focus on how they will finish the campaign. I m going to take a little quick step back and look from the outside in to make sure everyone is focused on these last four. I am, for sure, because these are my last guaranteed, official four, Gener said. Interim Coach Chris Naeole First Addresses the Media on Nov tackles, five sacks, eight passes deflected, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries as a senior. From there, Naeole signed with Colorado, where he was a two-time first-team all-big 12 pick. He played on four bowl teams including a 1993 Aloha Bowl victory over Fresno State and was a starter on the Fiesta and Cotton Bowlwinning teams. Naeole and his wife, Tara, have two children, Azure and Christian, and reside in Honolulu. SMU hit a high point in its push to return to former glory in 2012 with the Mustangs defense under Mason s guidance, posting two shutouts and tying an NCAA interception record, while ranking 15th in rush defense, tied for third in takeaways and second in fumble recoveries. Mason s defenses aided SMU to three consecutive bowl seasons and a narrow loss in the 2010 Conference-USA Championship Game, helping to resurrect a program stagnant since its fall in the 1980s. Mason also brings a unique understanding of not only the league, but Hawai i as well to his post, with a previous seven-year turn as linebackers coach at Fresno State, along with runs at Nevada and Boise State. Location: San José, California Founded: 1857 Enrollment: 32, 471 Interim President: Dr. Susan Martin Athletic Director: Gene Bleymaier First Year of Football: 1893 SAN JOSÉ STATE NOTES IT S BEEN A CLOSE ONE One of the closest series for UH, tied at , the Rainbow Warriors and Spartans have put on some nailbiters in the last few years, including two overtime games and last season s 13-0 UH win in California, which marked a historic feat dating back to SJSU was the first team in 18 years to be shut-out despite not attempting a single punt. Across the last five years, the teams have seen mini-streaks, with UH winning two straight in and SJSU coming back with two in 2011 and 13. Right now, the ball is in UH looks to hold serve after winning the last meeting San José. UH has been the only team to really get on a roll in the series, reeling off seven consecutive wins from 2001 to These old foes first met in 1936 in Honolulu, with SJSU starting the trend in a 13-8 victory, also winning 7-6 in 1937 at old Honolulu Stadium. The teams meet on November 21 for the second time in the series history, previously in 2009, a UH overtime road win. WARRIOR TURNED SPARTAN San José State linebacker Jared Leaf played two seasons at UH was a redshirt season for Leaf, who played in 12 games for the Warriors in 2012 at running back and on special teams. Leaf accumulated five total tackles and a forced fumble at UH. STAFF CONNECTIONS UH defensive coordinator Tom Mason and SJSU offensive coordinator Al Borges coached together at Portland State from , then at Boise State for the seasons where current UH coach Don Bailey was also the wide receivers coach with Borges at Boise State. UH special teams coordinator and tight ends coach Jake Cookus was a grad assistant at Kentucky under current San José State head coach Ron Caragher. WITH PROGRAMMATIC CHANGES, FIRST-YEAR UH COORDINATORS LOOK TO FINISH STRONG The University of Hawai i is working with a clean slate on all fronts in 2015, as one of only seven programs in NCAA DI FBS replacing both offensive and defensive coordinators Idaho State s Don Bailey looks to boost the offense, while SMU s Tom Mason will bolster UH s defensive strength. With the addition of Montana s Jake Cookus, the Warriors are one of only two FBS program in the nation that replaced coordinators in all three facets of the game. SPECIAL TEAMS COORDINATOR JAKE COOKUS Cookus arrived in Honolulu from Missoula, Montana, where his post had been co-special teams coordinator and safeties coach for the Montana Grizzlies over the previous two seasons. Finishing the season ranked No. 13 in NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), the Griz have advanced to the semifinal of the NCAA FCS Playoffs each of the last two years. Montana also earned 6-2 records each of the last two years in arguably one the most powerful conferences in the FCS the Big Sky a league that sends a minimum of three teams to the 24-team playoff each year, four in That kind of success is hard to come by without a quality special teams effort. During his time in Missoula, Cookus had his squad topping out at 17th in the FCS in net punting, 33rd in punt returns and 45th in kickoff returns. It was a carry-over from the success he engineered in seven seasons at Weber State as special teams coordinator (last three as co-defensive coordinator as well), where his unit ranked sixth in net punting and 16th in kickoff returns during his final season there Hawai i Football Weekly Release 5 HawaiiAthletics.com

6 GENERAL NOTES HAWAI I VS. SAN JOSÉ STATE (NOV. 21, 2015) HAWAI I - FRESNO STATE POST-GAME NOTES 4Hawai i and Fresno State met for the 48th time and 27th time in Honolulu with the loss, FS extended its series lead to and trimmed the UH lead in Honolulu to Fresno State won its fifth consecutive game in the series UH has not defeated Fresno State since 2010 and last topped FS in Honolulu in The Hawai i losing streak extended to eight (8) games and three (3) at home. 4 With the loss, the Hawai i program record dropped to (.551), and (.615) at home. 4 Hawai i overall Mountain West record fell to 4-27 (.129), 4-25 under head coach Norm Chow, and 0-2 under interim coach Chris Naeole--the MW losing streak grew to eight (8) games, beginning with Fresno State on Nov. 29, UH allowed an opposing quarterback to throw for six (6) touchdowns for the first time since Wyoming s Brett Smith in Makoa Camanse-Stevens second quarter touchdown reception to tie the game at 7-7 was his first career touchdown reception and his fourth career catch--he had a career high six receptions for 63 yards on the night. 4Nick Nelson was ejected for targeting near the end of the first quarter, and is the second UH player ejected on the call this season. 4Despite trailing at the end of the first quarter, UH held its eighth opponent this season to a touchdown or less in the opening period. 4UH tied its highest penalty count this season and had the most penalty yards since committing 13 fouls for 144 yards against New Mexico State in Paul Harris rushed for a total of 126 yards, marking his fourth 100+ yard rushing performance of the year--harris carried the ball a career-best 26 times. 4Ikaika Woolsey completed a first quarter 33-yard pass to Melvin Davis, which was a season and career best for Davis, who also notched a third-quarter rushing touchdown, his seventh of the year, needing one more score to match last year s leader, Joey Iosefa. 4Julian Gener s 5.0 TFL was the most in a game since Art Laurel had the same vs. South Alabama on 12/1/12 and tied the program single-game record. 4Last time UH lost back-to-back home game by 28 points or more each contest, BYU (31) and Wisconsin (29), Wide receiver Marcus Kemp tallied his third 100+ yard receiving game this season. NEARING THE END OF THE BAKERS DOZEN The Thursday (Sept. 3) opener between UH and Colorado kicked off a grueling 13 consecutive weeks of games, with no BYEs, as the only two NCAA FBS teams with the full schedule. MORE THAN AROUND THE WORLD IN 60 DAYS Through the course of the six-game road slate, the Warriors became the most traveled team in the nation. UH will finish as the only program in DI FBS to play games in five separate time zones, traveling to Ohio State, (9,020 miles), followed up with Wisconsin (8,300 mi., Boise State (5,668 mi), New Mexico (6,456 mi.), Nevada (5,136 mi.) and their final road swing to the ninth island at UNLV (5,522 mi.). For the sake of comparison, the circumference of the earth is 24,902 miles. The UH traveling party exceeded that mark on their return flight from Albuquerque. Now at home for the remainder of the season, UH traveled over 40,122 air miles through the six road contests, crossing time zone borders a total of 26 times, flying the equivalent of just over 1 3/5 the earth s circumference. KICKOFF VARIETY In addition to a variety of travel locations and environments, UH made its ninth unique game time vs. UNLV. The Rainbow Warriors opened up the first week with a 7:04 p.m. HT kickoff against Colorado, followed by 3:42 p.m. ET at Ohio State, 6:00 p.m. at home vs. UC Davis, 7:12 p.m. CT at Wisconsin, 8:15 p.m. MT at Boise State. In the last four weeks, it s been 5:00 p.m. MT, 1:00 p.m. PT, returning home for a 4:30 p.m. HT start vs Air Force and wrapping the nine with a 3:07 p.m. PT start at UNLV. UH consistently practices at 7:00 a.m. HT. HAWAI I IN MOUNTAIN WEST PLAY The Mountain West conference woes have extended deep into 2015 for UH with an 0-7 leage record. Since joining the Mountain West in The Rainbow Warriors won a single conference game in their inaugural season, and were winless in year two. Last season provided some signs that the ship would turn, winning three (3), with 3-of-5 losses decided by 10 points or fewer. However, UH will now return home with only one (1) league opportunity for its first conference victory of UH is now 4-27 in Mountain West play. UH opened with a 55-0 road loss at Boise State, followed by a Homecoming miss to San Diego State, dropping consecutive comeback losses at New Mexico (28-27) and Nevada (30-20) prior to the Air Force (58-7), UNLV (41-21) and Fresno State (42-14) losses. HARD LABOR HOURS FOR THE DEFENSE After holding possession on offense for only 14:54 of the Air Force game, UH fell back to rank last nationally in time of possession (127), now at a 22:57 average, a ranking held for much of the season. The UH defense has struggled against the run but limited the success of opposing passing attacks up until the last two weeks. Aided by some very tough running competition over five (5) straight weeks of MW play, including two (2) triple option teams, run teams have been busy. Boise State came out with a dominant offensive attack and held the field with a spread offense, which held the ball for 37:33, a stark comparison to Wisconsin s traditional run-based Big Ten offense in the final non-conference outing. However, the Badgers were epitomized by their opening drive, which employed runs on 13-of-16 plays on its opening scoring drive, collecting 8:09 from the clock. San Diego State placed their emphasis on the talents of RB Donnel Pumphrey and ate up 36:17. New Mexico and Nevada did UH no favors with their run-first approaches. However, UH was able to find its ground game footing vs. UNM, splitting the TOP deficit, 29:41-30:19. Against Air Force, UH ran up against the toughest rushing performance in two seasons, as AFA ran the ball on 90 percent of plays, logging 492 ground yards, with five (5) rushing touchdowns. Opening the home stand, the passing coverage, once ranked as high as 18th, broke down against Fresno State, aided by five personal foul calls which extended drives, including two scoring drives, and gave up 285 yards passing with six (6) touchdowns. Offensive stuggles have given way to shorter possessions, and opportunities for opponents to test a weary defense, as Fresno State did--but even when UH is successful, the Bows have averaged only 1:45 per scoring possession through 11 games. UH actually ranks atop the national lists for scoring under two minutes, doing so offensively 68 percent of the time. UH has not controlled time of possession in any game this season, forcing the Bows defense to be one of the most experienced on-field units so far in Hawai i Football Weekly Release 6 HawaiiAthletics.com

7 GENERAL NOTES HAWAI I VS. SAN JOSÉ STATE (NOV. 21, 2015) EARLY CHANGES AT WORLD IN NAEOLE S FIRST GAME Many interim coaches may settle into the role before making significant changes to the team, but with few games to work with, interim coach Chris Naeole wasted little time in making adjustments. On Tuesday last week, preceding his first practice as interim coach, Naeole announced that he had reorganized the team captains, naming eight (8) new captains. The new C group includes offensive lineman Dejon Allen, linebacker Jerrol Garcia-Williams, linebacker Julian Gener, cornerback Nick Nelson, nose tackle Kory Rasmussen, punter/kicker Rigoberto Sanchez and defensive end Kennedy Tulimasealii; in addition to offensive lineman Ben Clarke, who was a captain at the start of the season. Naeole followed with the public announcement that UH would go a different direction at starting quarterback, with junior Ikaika Woolsey taking the reins from Max Wittek. Woolsey had seen limited action this season, starting against New Mexico for an injured Wittek and producing 195 yards and one (1) passing score, with a 52-percent completion rate. Woolsey was the starter in 12 games last season and played in all 13, completing 210-fo-416 passes for 2,538 yards and 13 touchdowns, also rushing for 203 yards and a score. Against UNLV, Woolsey connected for 187 yards on 16-of-33 passing with one interception. Although he got stopped for two (2) sacks, his mobility allowed the Bows greater play diversity and opened up the run game, which accounted for 191 yards and all three (3) scores. Naeole proved willing to reverse course in the first home contest under his charge, starting Woolsey against Fresno State, but shifting to Wittek in the second half after accumulating a 28-7 halftime deficit. BATTLE-WORN WARRIORS Despite a smooth NFL-style fall camp that allowed the Rainbow Warriors to start with limited injuries, the accumulated injuries of 11 consecutive games with six (6) on the road have taken their toll, testing the UH depth. The offense has been hit hardest, with UH starting nine (9) different lineups in 11 games this season. The only preseason injury, running back Diocemy Saint Juste was one of the top returning backs and was the only key player not to make it to opening day. Top receivers Marcus Kemp and Quinton Pedroza returned nearly 1,500 yards and each have missed starts and entire games, while both running backs Steven Lakalaka and Paul Harris have missed outings. While the line has been steady, left guard Elijah Tupai was out of action against New Mexico, and tight ends Metuisela Unga and Harold Molena have required breaks. Quarterback Max Wittek also missed a contest at UNM after injuries sustained against SDSU. The defense has hardly been immune to the injury bug, with linebackers Julian Gener and Benetton Fonua missing time in the middle, defensive end Meffy Koloamatangi missed the Nevada and Air Force games. The latest is linebacker Jeremy Castro, who will be out the remainder of the season. The secondary has seen the most lineup changes due to injuries, missing games from Marrell Jackson, Dejaun Butler and Ne Quan Phillips. Meanwhile, both long snapper Brian Hittner and safety Trayvon Henderson are both out for the year. In total, 17 starters have missed at least one contest this season to injury. The Rainbow Warriors may be in for some more injury hard luck, as guard Dejon Allen and returner Keelan Ewalikos status remain uncertain early in the week. SOLID FIRST SEASON FOR RAY GUY WATCHLISTER SANCHEZ Junior punter and place kicker Rigoberto Sanchez has made waves at his position this season on the national stage and garnered a pair of recent honors in recognition of his efforts for the Rainbow Warriors this season. On the week of the Air Force game, Sanchez was listed among the candidates for the Ray Guy Award, given out annually to the top collegiate punter of the year and to be distributed at The Home Depot College Football Awards Show on December 10. The list of candidates was narrowed on November 13 without Sanchez moving to the next stage. However, the in-conference competition is stout, with two MW punters moving on as semifinalists, including San Jose State s Michael Carrizosa, who leads the nation. Sanchez first earned accolades for his performance in the loss to Air Force, earning Ray Guy Award Player of the Week nationally. Sanchez had a total of seven punts and 364 yards against the Falcons. He averaged 52 yards per punt with four punts marked inside the 20-yard line and no touchbacks. His 73-yard, fourth quarter punt ranked in a tie for fifth-longest in program history. In Las Vegas, Sanchez booted seven (7) times for a 43.1 average, dropping thee (3) inside the 20 with no touchbacks. Last week, Sanchez punted six (6) times for a 47.7 average, dropping three (3) inside the 20. So far this season, he averages 45.0 YPP with only two (2) touchbacks, 26 inside the 20 and 24 kicks of over 50 yards. ON AND OFF THE FIELD On Nov. 5, nose tackle Kory Rasmussen was selected to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District 8 Team, the organization announced on Thursday, Nov. 5. After earning the district honor, he is now eligible for Academic All-America accolades, which will be announced later this season. Holding a 3.35 cumulative GPA, Rasmussen, a Communication major, has taken over the starting role as nose tackle for the Rainbow Warriors, ranking 11th on the team in tackles (37 total, 21 solo), starting the last six (6) games after splitting time early. He also has logged 1.5 tackles for loss, a sack and a fumble recovery this year. The junior from Ewa Beach started his career at Colorado, and returned home to O ahu as a walk-on, sitting out one season due to NCAA transfer rules, and serving on the scout team last season. For his off-season efforts, he was awarded a scholarship and has since worked his way to the top of the defensive line rotation. Rasmussen is a twotime member of the UH Dean s List. Rasmussen became the first Rainbow Warrior to earn the academic all-district honors since Kealoha Pilares and Mana Silva were selected in The district is comprised of NCAA institutions in Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawai i, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Canada, covering most of the schools in the Mountain West and Pac-12. NON-WINNING SEASONS With the loss to Air Force, UH moved to its fifth consecutive non-winning season and sixth in the last seven seasons. The last time UH posted five straight non-winning seasons was from Hawai i s last winning season occurred in 2010 (10-4). The only other stretch in which UH went five seasons without a winning season was FINISHING STRONG WITH TWO AT HOME While the Rainbow Warriors are mathematically eliminated from the opportunity for a winning season, two games remain to send the 21 seniors out with at least a matching record to last season (4-9). With the final three remaining games at home (Fresno State, San Jose State, UL-Monroe), it marks the only stretch of the season during which UH was not alternating home and away. The Rainbow Warriors hold a 2-9 record for the second consecutive season, and second time in the last 20 years. BOWL-BOUND COMPETITION Nobody said the schedule would make it easy to earn wins. Seven (7) of UH s 13 opponents in 2015 made appearances last year in postseason play. All seven participated in FBS bowl games, with Ohio State earning two opportunities and the first-ever College Football Playoff title Ohio State (Sugar, CFP National Championship), Wisconsin (Outback), Boise State (Vizio Fiesta), San Diego State (San Diego County CU Poinsettia), Nevada (R+L Carriers New Orleans), Air Force (Famous Idaho Potato) and Fresno State (Hawai i). TOUGH COMPETITION PROVEN ON THE FIELD Sometimes using past performances for comparison can be a paper tiger, but seven (7) of UH s nine (9) losses have come at the hands of opponents who not only received preseason hype, but are a combined on the season, including No. 2 Ohio State at 10-0, former top- 25 team Boise State at 7-3, No. 20 Wisconsin at 8-2 and projected preseason leader and current MW West division leader San Diego State at 7-3 and 6-0 in MW play. Among those teams, BSU ranks 15th in total offense, followed by OSU (33rd) and Wisconsin (67th), while in total defense UW ranks 3rd, ahead of SDSU (6th), OSU (9th) and BSU (11th) Hawai i Football Weekly Release 7 HawaiiAthletics.com

The Rainbow Warriors have seen much greater success utilizing the run, which has also paid dividends in the passing game. Running back Paul Harris has rushed for 100 yards in each of the past two contests, going for a career-best 190 yards at UNLV and coming back to Aloha Stadium for 126 against Fresno State. Across the UNLV and FS games, UH has rushed for 191 and 192 yards, respectively, also passing for 187 and 245 yards in the two MW contests. While Harris is the feature back, injuries have hampered his rest time. Melvin Davis has seen the most reps in reserve with 219 yards on 59 carries, but his power running style has left him banged up in his first year at UH. Battling a lingering injury, junior Steven Lakalaka was out of commission for the past four games, but looks to be back to work on Saturday. Harris ranks eighth in the conference in yards per carry (5.5) and seventh in yards per game, accumulating 787 yards, surpassing Lakalaka s 2014 team-leading numbers (679) with two games to go. WEIGHING THE QUARTERBACKS In some of the toughest games this season, UH was limited to under 200 yards passing, including four of the last six outings, but the Rainbow Warriors broke up the trend against Fresno State with a 245-yard, two-quarterback mark. After Chris Naeole was named interim head coach, he was quick mix things up, giving the first start to junior Ikaika Woolsey, who started 12 games in Going out first against UNLV and Fresno State, Woolsey made his first consecutive starts since last season. While the offensive numbers improved, particularly the run game, the results did not, prompting a mid-game switch to Wittek against Fresno State. On the season, Woolsey has completed 52-of-108 passes for 590 yards, throwing for two (2) touchdowns, but five (5) interceptions. His competition this season has been USC transfer Max Wittek, who started eight of the team s 11 games this season and accumulated 1,542 yards on 128-of-271 passing, registering seven (7) touchdowns with 15 interceptions. Relieving in the second half against Fresno State, Wittek completed 12-of-29 passes for 153 yards, with two (2) interceptions. With freshman Aaron Zwahlen likely to maintain his redshirt, the other option in the stable for UH is redshirt freshman Beau Reilly, still working back to form from his two-year mission to São Paulo, Brazil. YOUNG WIDEOUTS SERVING AS THE RUDDER FOR THE PASSING GAME While Marcus Kemp sparked the UH passing game late in the Fresno State game to keep his team leads in receptions (30) yards (484), it has been the newcomers who have shined the brightest in recent weeks. With Quinton Pedroza ending his final season early, redshirt freshman Devan Stubblefield and transfer Isaiah Bernard have seen larger roles, with Stubblefield reaching 250 yards on 27 catches, while Bernard has 219 on 21. Makoa Camanse-Stevens has made waves the past two games, accumulating 70 yards at UNLV and grabbing six (6) catches for 63 yards and his first career touchdown against Freno State. Steady from early on, freshman starting slot Dylan Collie, younger brother of longtime NFL slotback Austin Collie, ranks second on the team with 342 yards on 29 catches. PASSING DEFENSE LOOKING TO RESURGE In spite of a setback last week against Fresno State, allowing the first six-touchdown passer in two years, the Rainbow Warriors pass defense had been stout throughout the year. UH only allowed three (3) passing scores through the first four (4) games of 2015, snapping opposing streaks: holding Colorado to only 156 yards passing while snapping a 20-game streak for Buffs QB Sefo Liufau--a career-first no passing TD day--also interrupting an Ohio State passing score streak (24 games) dating to the 2013 season. After a 285-yard letdown vs. FS, UH ranks sixth in the Mountain West and 33rd in the nation vs. the pass, holding opponents to YPG by air, allowing 200-yard passers in consecutive weeks for the first time this year. UH has held 7-of-11 opponents below 200 yards by air. NELSON RISING THE RECORD BOOKS CB Nick Nelson is a proven commodity this season and is also looking to join the UH record books by season s end. In addition to making a team ninth-best 45 tackles, Nelson has broken up 13 passes, including three games with three (3) apiece; a mark which ranks him third in a close see-saw battle for the Mountain West lead, tying for 31st in the NCAA standings. The UH season record sits at 18 PBU. MAKING STOPS BEYOND THE LINE Defensive end Kennedy Tulimasealii has been a force for UH this season, and his speed off the ball has pushed him to the top of the Mountain West rankings for tackles for loss, where he ranks 20th nationally with 15.5, a 1.4 per game average, causing 49 yards in opponent losses. Last week, he was joined by linebacker Julian Gener, who tied the program single-game record with five (5.0) stops behind the line against Fresno State--a handful of his team-leading 17 tackles. Gener has 11.5 TFL of his own this year. The pair lead a defensive unit that has accumulated 65 stops behind scrimmage this year, set to surpass last season s 70-TFL mark, moving closer to topping last year s sack total of 24, with 17 so far in SPREADING THE ATTACK Through 11 weeks of action, the Rainbow Warrior defense has only had two repeat performers for leading tackler, an indicator of the stopping talent available on the unit. After 11 games, seven different players have enjoyed double-digit tackling. The latest was Julian Gener, putting up 17 stops vs. Fresno State, following up an 11-tackle mark at UNLV. Missing from the lineup vs. FS, linebacker Jerrol Garcia-Williams, made a career-best 17 stops vs. Air Force (10 solo). Against UC Davis, JGW also logged 15, netting MW Defensive Player of the Week honors. He has led the team with double-digits three times in 2015 and has 89 TT. Against SDSU, Gener led the team with 19 stops, the most in the conference this season, now recording three games in double digits and a team second-best 82 stops. Safety Marrell Jackson also repeated in double-digits. Kory Rasmussen went big in his second start, collecting eight (8) at BSU. Gener ranks third in the MW solo tackle standings, and 20th in the nation with 52 and a 5.8 per game average. Garcia-Williams is just behind at fourth with 55 and a 5.5 average. Forestville, Md. Suitland HS 4Defensive back who began taking punt returns vs. Ohio State, returning 2 for 8 total yards 4Has since taken command of the role, averaging a MW 4th-best 8.1 yards per return after 17 chances, including a career-long of 37 yards at Nevada #29 PAUL HARRIS, KOR Jr. Columbus, Ohio Ventura College 4Averaging 17.2 yards off 8 returns, topping out at 25 yards vs. CU 4Named All-America last season in JUCO as a kick returner by the JC Athletic Bureau and the California Community College Football Coaches Association 4 Selected Region III all-state first team and firstteam all-conference 4Averaged 35.1 yards on 20 kickoff returns with three touchdowns as a sophomore 4As a freshman, named first-team all-conference selection as a return specialist with a 26.7 yards per return average Also RB at VC, rushing for 782 with a 7.5 YPC average #20 PEREESE JOAS Sr. Plano, Texas Liberty HS 4Reserve running back who took kicks in the absence of both Harris and Ewaliko against SDSU and taking over for Ewaliko vs. Fresno State. 4Returned 5 kicks for 122 yards against SDSU, including a career-long and team second-best 42-yarder in the 3rd quarter 4Returned two for 51 yards against FS, including a 33-yarder in the second half. SANCHEZ A STEADY WEAPON FOR THE WARRIORS First-year transfer utility kicker Rigoberto Sanchez opened up with a solid start to his UH career, earning special teams MVP for his role in the season-opening win over Colorado, largely growing more consistent each outing. Against CU, Sanchez opened his placekicking career with a first half 27-yarder down the middle and hit from 34 later in the game. This year, he has made 8-of-10 (t-4th MW) overall, only missing from 49, and most recently, the right hash 22-yarder against UNM. Against Nevada, Sanchez connected from 47 and 50, the longest for UH since Sanchez has also firmly secured the punting job, averaging a MW third-best 44.7 YPP on 63 kicks. Versus SDSU, he dropped in 6-of-8 for over 50 yards, averaging 44.3 at UNM. Against AFA, Sanchez logged a 73-yarder that ranked in a tie for the fifth-longest kick in UH history, contributing to his 52.0 YPP average and aiding him to Ray Guy Punter of the Week honors. Sanchez has only really recorded a single bad punt, of only 18 yards in the first kick at Ohio State- -in front of over 107,000 people. Sanchez quickly regrouped and sailed his second punt for 52 yards, pinning OSU at their own 23. His 22-yarder vs. SDSU was the product of a short field pooch. Sanchez got plenty of work against the Buckeyes and largely maintained his consistency. He booted eight (8) punts for 289 yards and a 36.1 average, docked a few yards for the bad kick early. He has extended his best distance, currently reaching 58 yards at Wisconsin avg. that date. SANCHEZ A SELECT TYPE OF KICKER In 2015, Rigoberto Sanchez falls into the old-school category of kickers, as one of only five (5) in the nation who handle both punting and PK duties for their teams. Also on that list are Austin Rehkow (Idaho), Lumi Kabia (Texas St.), Dalton Parks (Tulsa) and Alex Howell (Boston College). Since standing in for an ill Mauro Bondi, he has added kickoffs and leads UH with 20 Kickoffs, as one of only four (4) kickers who handle all four duties for their respective schools. PROTECTING OUR OWN UH has done well protecting Sanchez on punts. Blocking eight (8) in the same span, UH hasn t allowed a punt to be blocked since Dec. 24, 2008, an 87-game streak and the second-longest in DI FBS. Upstart defender Dejaun Butler added to the UH total vs. UC Davis to up the anty, batting down Colby Wadman s fourth quarter punt, plus a scoop-and-score to put UH ahead Keelan Ewaliko made the first of 2015, setting up the first UH touchdown of the year by blocking Colorado s first punt deep in their own territory. CASHING IT IN The Rainbow Warriors have not just one, but three men who are a threat to take one to the house on the return if opportunities are presented--in Paul Harris, Keelan Ewaliko and Nick Nelson. Harris was a JUCO All-American kick returner at 35.1 YPR on 20 returns and 3 TDs last season. Ewaliko brought the Aloha Stadium crowd to its feet vs. UC Davis, taking one all the way back to the UC Davis 2-yard line. However, video replay determined he edged the sideline a little bit too close- -trimmed back from 98 yards to 65. Against Air Force, he cashed one in, cutting through the Falcons coverage for a 98-yard touchdown return, the first for UH since The huge return was a key in avoiding a fourth 2015 shutout on a tough offensive night for the Rainbow Warriors. Ewaliko led the team in 2014 and now is putting up 27.8 YPR on 20 returns. On Punt returns, Nelson has steadily improved, returning a punt for a career-best 37 yards at Nevada, with a current MW 4th-ranked average of 8.1 YPR.
