With the Nebraska contest, Marquette is playing one of its two non-conference games at an actual road site (neutral sites not included). Marquette meets Wisconsin next Saturday for the other contest. Senior Steve Novak is one free throw attempt away from becoming the school leader in free throw percentage. 3 Shootout Success Marquette owns an 8-1 all-time mark in Great Alaska Shootout history. With eight wins, Marquette has the fifth most wins in that tournament s history, behind Alaska Anchorage (27), Purdue (10), North Carolina (9), North Carolina State (9). Marquette s second Great Alaska Shootout title joined it with North Carolina, North Carolina State and Kentucky as the only four schools to win the tournament multiple times. Trio Named All-Tournament Senior forward Steve Novak, freshman guard Dominic James and freshman Jerel McNeal were named to the Great Alaska Shootout All- Tournament team. Novak was named the tourney s Most Outstanding Player, averaging 17.0 points per game in the tournament, including a season high 28 against South Carolina in the championship win. James scored 13.7 points per game and had nine assists against South Carolina. McNeal scored 10.0 points per game. Novak and James earned their second all-tournament nod of the week as both were named to the Pepsi Blue & Gold Classic All-Tournament team as well. McNeal Named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week The Marquette men s basketball program has earned its second consecutive BIG EAST Rookie of the Week as freshman guard Jerel McNeal was named the recipient in week 2. McNeal helped lead the Golden Eagles to their second Great Alaska Shootout Championship by averaging 10.0 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 2.3 steals, and shooting 66.7-percent (10-for-15) from the field in the team s three victories. McNeal, who was named to the Shootout s All- Tournament Team, also was a perfect 9-of-9 from the free throw line. Amoroso Named College Insider Star of the Week Ryan Amoroso scored a career-high 30 points, including the last five of the game, to help Marquette to its second Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout title with a overtime victory over South Carolina at Sullivan Arena. News and Notes Great Alaska Shootout, out-rebounding all three of its Shootout opponents, including holding a season best +6 advantage over Eastern Washington. Chapman Chimes in Off the Bench In a 10 point win over Eastern Washington in the first round of the Great Alaska Shootout, senior guard Joe Chapman came up big in 32 minutes off the bench. He hit 6-of-10 field goals to pour in a season high 17 points. The 17 point outing was Chapman s highest total since a scoring a career high 21 against UAB on February 2, Fitzgerald Breaks Through Sophomore forward Dan Fitzgerald had his first double-figure scoring day for Marquette, tossing in 11 points off the bench in the win over Oral Roberts. Fitzgerald led a strong MU reserve contingent that outscored the ORU bench, Amoroso s Career Day Sophomore forward Ryan Amoroso scored a career high 30 points and tied a career best with 12 rebounds in the Great Alaska Shootout Championship win over South Carolina. Amoroso bettered his career point total by 12 and scored in double figures in points for the seventh time in his career. The 12 boards tied the mark set last season at Memphis and are the only two times in his career where he s topped the 10 board mark. The double double was the second in his career and the first for Marquette this season. Stopping the Break Among Marquette s keys to success in the Great Alaska Shootout was limiting its opponents on the fast break. Marquette outscored its three opponents 28-2 on the break, allowing only South Carolina to score a bucket on the break during the tournament. Newcomers Contribute en Masse Four newcomers to Division I basketball have contributed greatly to Marquette early in the season. The 5-10 guard was named to the All- Tournament team after posting games of 16 points, nine assists against Rice and 15 points, seven assists against Winthrop. Additionally, he was named All-Tournament at the Great Alaska Shootout, where he averaged 13.7 points and 6.7 assists per game. Novak Carries Load Through five games, senior forward Steve Novak is one of two players to score 10 or more points in each contest, joining guard Dominic James. Novak leads the team, scoring 16.2 points per game. Defense Up to the Task Through two games, Marquette s defense proved to be a strong suit for the Golden Eagles. Marquette held its first two opponents to a combined 37.3 percent shooting, holding Winthrop to a season low 35.1 percent shooting day. James Named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week Just one week into its new conference arrangement, a member of the Marquette men's basketball team received the team's first accolade from the BIG EAST Conference. Guard Dominic James was named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week by the league office on November 21. James, a freshman from Richmond, Ind., began his collegiate career with a 16 point, nine assist, six rebound effort against Rice in the first round of the Pepsi Blue & Gold Classic. He followed that up with 15 points and seven rebounds against Winthrop in the championship game of the classic. For the week, James averaged a team-leading 15.5 points and 8.0 assists to go along with 4.0 rebounds. He earned a spot on the All-Tournament team as a result. Tournament Time While it s not March yet, Marquette starts its season off with a pair of tournaments, the Pepsi Blue & Gold Classic and the Great Alaska Shootout. As a result, Marquette played five times in eight days. Overall, Marquette has played three games in three or four days 11 times, although it has played more than three games in three days. During the run to the 1997 C-USA Tournament Championship, Marquette won four games in four days to secure the title. However, the prize here goes to head coach Frank Murray who in December of 1921 had his team play six games in six days. Marquette won the first five led by Dick Quinn and Dukes Deford, but dropped the sixth on New Year s Eve to South Bend, Murray also had his team play five straight during the season. Novak Moves Up Career Scoring List Through five games, senior Steve Novak sits at 1,107 career points, the 29th highest total in school history. He needs 101 more points to pass Rob Logterman for 28th place on the school s alltime scoring list. Season Openers Marquette has had plenty of success opening up the season. After the season opening win against Rice, the Golden Eagles are all time in the first game of the year. Marquette has five straight season opening wins. The Golden Eagles had an impressive streak of 29 years in which it started 1-0, dating from the to the seasons. In Tom Crean s tenure, Marquette has started the season 1-0 six of the seven years he s been head coach. Opening Up With the Blue & Gold The season marks the first time Marquette starts the regular season with its own tournament since the year. In fact, those two seasons are the only two years in which Marquette s first game has come in the Blue & Gold Classic. Non-Conference Dominance Marquette is now 45-9 against non-conference opponents since The Golden Eagles have won 35 of their last 36 regular season non-conference games at home. 46 Straight From The Line Going back to last season, senior forward Steve Novak has converted 46 straight free throws. Novak, who was 12-for-12 against Houston (March 2, 2005) and was 10-for-10 during the Great Alaska Shootout, has not missed a free throw since the second half of MU s game on January 20, A career 92.0-percent free throw shooter, Novak needs one more attempt to qualify for the top spot on Marquette s all-time leaders chart by nearly seven percentage points. Three-For-153 The Golden Eagles have connected on at least one three-point field goal in 153 straight games. Under Tom Crean, MU has made at least one three-point field goal in 190 of 191 games. 5 "O" 60, "O" 60 Marquette's key to victory over the past four seasons has been keeping its opponents offense to under 60 points. Marquette has won 41-of-56 and are 53-9 overall under Tom Crean when surrendering 60 points or less. Two Returning Starters The Golden Eagles return just two starters from last season s NIT team. Seniors Joe Chapman and Steve Novak started 22 and 29 games, respectively, in Three other players on this year s roster earned starting nods last season senior Chris Grimm (9 games), and sophomores Ousmane Barro (4 games) and Ryan Amoroso (3 games). For their careers, Novak and Chapman have started 58 and 37 games, respectively. Bradley Center Advantage Marquette has won 59 of its last 70 games, and is (81.0) overall during Tom Crean s seven seasons, at the Bradley Center. MU first began playing at the Bradley Center in , and since then, MU is (75.2) in the building. New Faces Marquette welcomes seven new players to its roster in Tulane transfer Dan Fitzgerald (St. Paul, Minn.), who sat all of last season, is joined by junior college transfer Jamil Lott (St. Paul, Minn./North Dakota State School of Science), and freshman Dwight Burke (Brooklyn, N.Y.), Dominic James (Richmond, Ind.), Wesley Matthews (Madison, Wis.), Jerel McNeal (Country Club Hills, Ill.) and Matt Mortensen (Provo, Utah). All seven are expected to contribute for the Golden Eagles this season. Youth Will Be Served Other than the three seniors, only junior Mike Kinsella and sophomores Ryan Amoroso and Ousmane Barro have played at least division I college basketball game. To put it in perspective, MU s three seniors combined have played in 265 games while the other 10 have played in 102. They ll Be Missed Marquette three graduation seniors from last season will be missed on and off the court. Leaders in every sense of the word, graduates Travis Diener (19.7 ppg, 7.0 apg), Marcus Jackson (8.5 rpg, 40 blocks) and Todd Townsend (5.9 ppg, 2.8 rpg) left an indelible mark on the program. As four-year players, Diener and Townsend led the program to 91 victories and four postseason appearances, including the 2003 Final Four. Individually, Diener was a two-time first team All Conference USA selection, honorable mention Associated Press All- American, and finished his career second on the school s all-time assist chart and third in scoring. He was selected by the Orlando Magic in the 2005 NBA Draft (Round 2, 38th pick overall). Point Guard U Freshman point guard Dominic James, who figures to be handed the keys to the Golden Eagles offense from day one, will look to continue a long and successful line of point guards at Marquette. The previous four points guards Tony Miller ( 92-95; 8.3 ppg, 7.8 apg), Aaron Hutchins ( 95-98; 11.8 ppg, 4.5 apg), Cordell Henry ( 99-02; 11.2 ppg, 3.4 apg) and Travis Diener ( 01-05; 14.1 ppg, 5.1 apg) combined to average 11.4 points and 5.2 rebounds over their careers. Deep Threat Simply put, Steve Novak is one of college basketball s best long rang shooters. Marquette s 6-10 senior forward s 250 career three-point field goals are 34 shy of the program s all-time record of 284, set recent graduate Travis Diener. A career percent shooter from behind the arc, Novak connected on 79 three-point field goals in each of the previous two seasons. Closing-Out Conference USA Marquette closed out its 10-year affiliation with Conference USA by winning 91 games over the last four seasons. The Golden Eagles (77.1) mark was the fourth best in the conference since 2001, trailing only Louisville, and Memphis. Novak and Chapman Answer the Bell Seniors Joe Chapman and Steve Novak enter the campaign having played in all 100 games during their three year careers. The two need to appear in 31 games this season to tie Scott Merritt (126) for first place all-time at Marquette in games played. Conference Play The BIG EAST is the fourth conference for Marquette since The Golden Eagles were members of the Midwestern Collegiate Conference from 1989 to 1991, Great Midwest Conference from 1991 to 1995, and Conference USA from 1995 to Marquette has earned 77 all-conference recognitions and is during its 16 years of conference affiliation. Will History Repeat Itself? Although the preseason coaches poll had the Golden Eagles 12th in the BIG EAST, if history is any indicator maybe third would have been more appropriate. MU finished third in each of its three previous inaugural conference seasons (Midwestern Collegiate 9-5; Great Midwest 5-5; Conference USA 8-4). Non-Conference Dominance With a young and relatively inexperienced team, it will be important for Marquette to take care of business in November and December. Since 2001, the Golden Eagles Marquette are (80.6) in regular and post season games against non-conference opponents. MU plays 13 non-conference games in , with eight of those games coming at the Bradley Center. Post Season Play Marquette s post season appearance in 2005 was the program s 38th all-time, ninth-most in Division I. It was the school s 15th appearance in the post season NIT. MU s all-time record in post season NIT games stands at (60.0). Tom Crean led the Golden Eagles to the post season for the fourth consecutive year, and fifth time in his six years as head coach. The Golden Eagles are (84.9) at home since Marquette drew 251,274 fans for its 21 home games (Avg.: 11,965), the fifth straight season the program has averaged more than 11,000 fans per game. The 6-10 forward connected on a team-high 89 three-point field goals and at 47.1-percent was ranked fifth in Division I in three-point field goal percentage prior to the start of the NCAA Tournament and NIT. His 89 threes were the second most all-time at Marquette, tying his total from his sophomore season in Postseason Regulars Marquette is one of eight teams in the BIG EAST Conference to qualify for the postseason in each of the last four seasons. Steve Novak (89), Travis Diener (68) and Joe Marquette Signs Hayward and Cubillan to National Letters of Intent MILWAUKEE Head coach Tom Crean announced the signing of Lazar Hayward (Buffalo, N.Y.) and David Cubillan (DA-Veed Coob-E-Yan) (Mara Caibo, Venezuela) to national letters of intent today. Hayward and Cubillan will enroll at the university beginning in the fall of Both young men come from high intensity college-style programs and that can only help them adjust to BIG EAST basketball at Marquette, said Crean. Hayward, a 6-6, 205-pound wing, plays at Prep in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He is rated among the top 25 wings by Scout.com and the number 69 overall prospect of 2006 by Hoopmaster.com s Van Coleman. Hayward averaged 27.0 points and was named to the All-Prep School Invitational Team in Lazar Hayward is two-way player who excels at shooting the ball, playing in transition and uses his wingspan to create havoc defensively, said Crean. The native of Buffalo, N.Y., is off to a tremendous start in 2006 averaging 25.0 points and 10.0 rebounds through four games. The characteristics that describe David are toughness, great character and unselfish, said Crean. Those are the qualities we look for in young men and the cornerstones of the Marquette program. Originally from Mara Caibo, Venezuela, Cubillan had an outstanding summer in which he led St. Benedict s to a championship in the 72-team AND 1 High School Basketball Championship/Metro East qualifier. David s rate of improvement during his short time in the United States is attributed to a strong work ethic and excellent coaching from Dan Hurley, said Crean. He has the ability to pressure the ball, run an offense and make shots. His toughness and desire to win are what is so appealing about him.

7 Head Coach Tom Crean Now in his seventh season as the head men s basketball coach at Marquette University, Tom Crean has positioned the program among the elite in college basketball. In his six seasons, Marquette has averaged 20 wins a year, won a conference championship and made five postseason appearances, including the 2003 Final Four, the program s third appearance all-time and first since Since 2001, Crean has directed the Golden Eagles to 91 victories, fifth most among BIG EAST schools, and four consecutive postseason appearances. He is a twotime recipient of the Ray Meyer Conference USA, NABC District XI and USBWA District V Coach of the Year awards, and in 2003 won the Coach Clair Bee Award as well as being named a finalist for the Naismith National Coach of the Year Award. Crean s 65.2 winning percentage and 122 victories place him third and fourth, respectively, all-time at MU. National Recognition Crean s revival of Marquette s storied basketball program has not gone unnoticed by the national pollsters as the Golden Eagles have spent 44 weeks in the rankings since November Prior to first appearing during Crean s tenure in the AP Top 25 on November 27, 2001, Marquette had been ranked for just 24 weeks the previous 15 seasons. Marquette s consecutive year-end rankings in 2002 and 2003 were the first time for the program in a quarter century, and on March 4, 2003, the school earned its highest ranking since 1978 by reaching No. 8 in AP poll. Player Development Personally driven by an intense commitment to improve, Crean has structured a program at Marquette that focuses heavily on individual instruction and has allowed his players to stay ahead of the competition. 8 Crean Year-By-Year at Marquette Despite losing all-american point guard Travis Diener for eight games, including the season s final five, Crean guided Marquette to 19 victories and its fourth consecutive post season appearance. The Golden Eagles season started with promise. The team won 13 of its first 14 games, the best start for the program in 26 years, and defeated Elite Eight participant and rival Wisconsin by nine at the Bradley Center. Marquette s appearance in the post season was the fifth during Crean s six seasons, and the school s 38th overall. Early success was highlighted by a season opening championship in the BCA Classic and the team s sixth consecutive Pepsi Blue & Gold Championship Despite losing Dwyane Wade and Robert Jackson, who accounted for 47.0 percent of Marquette s scoring and 38.0 percent of its rebounding in , Crean guided the Golden Eagles to a overall record and the quarterfinals of the National Invitation Tournament in The Golden Eagles postseason appearance was their 37th alltime. The season saw Crean lead Marquette to its 26th-consecutive non-conference home win, a fifth-straight Pepsi Blue & Gold Classic Championship, the program s 1,300th victory all-time (a victory at Houston on January 7) and, as a result of a victory over Louisville on January 31, only its second victory ever on the road over a Top 5-ranked opponent. After opening the season ranked 23rd in the Associated Press and ESPN/USA Today polls, the Golden Eagles spent nine and ten weeks, respectively, ranked in both polls Purely magical is the best way to describe the campaign, as Crean led Marquette to a place it had not been in over 25 years the Final Four. Starting three freshmen, Marquette overcame a slow start for an victory over Rice Friday night in the first round of the Pepsi Blue & Gold Classic. All three highly touted freshmen played a role in the victory. Dominic James scored a team-high 16 points, handed out nine assists and grabbed 6 rebounds. Fellow freshmen Jerel McNeal added 14 points and Wes Mathews chipped in 7 points. Senior Steve Novak hit 3-of-7 three-pointers to add 13 points, while sophomore Tulane transfer Dan Fitzgerald had 9 points, 8 rebounds and 8 assists. "We got a lot of good basketball from a lot of people," said Marquette coach Tom Crean. "I'm impressed with the instinct and the natural ability that these freshmen have." Novak said the freshmen were a bit nervous before their first college game. "It was hard to talk to them because one would get up and walk around and then another would get up," he said. "It's good for them to get out there for the first time." J.R. Harrison led Rice (0-1) with 18 points, while Jamal Moore added 14. Rice coach Willis Wilson said he was impressed with Marquette's three freshman starters. "I think they are a very talented group," Wilson said. "As they assert themselves more and learn the game, they are going to be terrific players." Winthrop 71, Marquette 64 Game 2 Pepsi Blue & Gold Classic November 19, 2005 Bradley Center Milwaukee MILWAUKEE Steve Novak had 17 points and Dominic James added 15 as Marquette dropped a decision to Winthrop in the 44th Annual Pepsi Blue & Gold Classic at the Bradley Center. Novak finished the game shooting 5-for-8 from the floor all from the perimeter. It was the senior's 35th game with four or more three-pointers in his career. He currently has 241 career treys. In addition to James' 15 points, he also dished out a gamehigh seven assists in 37 minutes of play. Freshman Wesley Matthews added 11 points and Ousmane Barro added seven points in 21 minutes of reserve play. Overall, Marquette shot 48.8 percent from the floor (21-43), including 42.9 percent from beyond the arc (9-21). They were 13-for-16 from the charity stripe. MU committed 15 turnovers just five in the second half while dishing out 13 assists. Winthrop shot just 35.1 percent from the floor, but made it count from behind the arc, connecting on 11-of-27 attempts (40.7 percent). It was the most three's made by an MU opponent since Houston made 11 on March 2, "As good a job as we did defensively tonight holding them to just 35 percent shooting is a tribute to their play as a team," said head coach Tom Crean. "They didn't panic as the shot clock winded down, made the extra passes, and executed. They're a veteran club that makes things happen." "I struggled at the beginning of the year to get my motivation going and get ready," Chapman said. "But I just came out and played hard. I had two very good practices leading up to the game, I was playing with confidence and came out and played well. The guys gave me confidence before the game and told me just to go out there and shoot the ball." Marquette advances to Friday s championship semifinal round where they ll face Oral Roberts at 8:30 p.m. CT. "We will absolutely have our hands full Friday night with Oral Roberts," Crean said. "I feel like we have to be a team in order to get where we want to be," James said. "It can't be one guy. We've just got to keep playing together and emphasizing that and if we do that, we can get to the places we need to be." James also dished eight assists for MU, while ORU came up short despite the monster effort of forward Caleb Green, who had 28 points and 12 rebounds. We just want to put people in position," Crean said of MU's problems with the press break. "Short passes, long passes. Really, I think where our turnovers came we could have broken the pressure without the pass." The Golden Eagles used a late 11-0 run to take a lead after neither team could build more than a 6-point advantage for the first 35 minutes. Marquette 92, South Carolina 89 OT Game 5 Great Alaska Shootout November 26, 2005 Sullivan Arena Anchorage, Alaska ANCHORAGE, Alaska Forward Ryan Amoroso scored 30 points, including the last five of the game, to help Marquette to its second Carrs/Safeway Great Alaska Shootout title with a overtime victory over South Carolina at Sullivan Arena. Tournament Most Outstanding Player Steve Novak poured in 28 points for the Golden Eagles, who added the 2005 title just four years after winning their first one. South Carolina got 23 points from guard Tre Kelley and 20 points, six rebounds and five assists from backcourt mate Tarence Kinsey, and 16 points, eight rebounds, six assists and three blocks from forward Renaldo Balkman. All three Gamecocks made the All-Tournament Team in the 28th annual tournament. MU freshman point guard Dominic James (12 points, 9 assists) and freshman guard Jerel McNeal (7 points, 4 rebounds, 2 steals) were also voted all-tourney. Amoroso and Novak both put up career-high point totals, while Amoroso tied his career-best with 12 rebounds. Amoroso entered Saturday s game with just 13 points and nine rebounds through the Golden Eagles first two Shootout victories. The first Shootout championship game to go to overtime featured nine ties and 20 lead changes. Marquette becomes just the fourth team to win multiple Shootout titles, joining North Carolina, North Carolina State and Kentucky in that elite company. Nebraska is a solid team from the floor, hitting 42.6 percent and has done its job on defense limiting its foes to 36.3 percent shooting.
