Wooden Award All-American and Wooden Award Finalist --Miles Finalist for Collegiate Basketball Award of Excellence Last Game Kansas ended its season with a loss to Bucknell in the first round of the 2005 NCAA tournament. On the game s final possession, KU senior Wayne Simien's 15-footer fell short as time expired. After two free throws from Kansas senior Keith Langford with 30 seconds remaining, the Jayhawks took the lead at On the ensuing possession, Bucknell's Chris McNaughton banked in a hook shot to give the Bison the lead for good. In his final game, Big 12 Player of the Year and Naismith Award finalist Simien led the Jayhawks with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow senior Michael Lee joined Simien in double figures with a career-high 18 points on 6- of-6 shooting from the field and 6-of-6 from the free throw line. In limited action, Langford made his return, scoring seven points in the loss. The Jayhawks shot 50 percent from the field and connected on 22-of-27 from the free throw line. Bucknell hit 21-of-51 from the field and connected on eight three-pointers. Bucknell junior Kevin Bettencourt led three Bison in double figures with 19 points. Fellow junior Charles Lee added 15 points, while McNaughton chipped in with 14 points in the win. KU ended its season with a 23-7 record. Kansas Head Coach Bill Self Kansas coach Bill Self won his fifth league title as a head coach against Kansas State March 2. He won two titles at Tulsa, two at Illinois and a share of the 2005 Big 12 title at Kansas. Self recorded his 250th career win at Kansas State on Feb. 9. His win against Colorado on Feb. 12 marked his seventh straight 20-win season as a head coach and eighth overall. He is in two seasons at KU and following his 12th season overall. In 2004, Self s first year at Kansas, the Jayhawks advanced to the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament for the third straight year, falling to Georgia Tech in overtime, Self's 24 victories tied Dick Harp for the most wins by a KU coach in his debut season at Kansas. Prior to KU, Self led Illinois to two Big Ten titles and three straight NCAA Tournament appearances. Before Illinois, he guided Tulsa to two WAC championships in 1999 and 2000 and was The Sporting News National Coach of the Year in A four-time Naismith Coach of the Year Award finalist, Self began his coaching career at KU in and was an assistant at his alma mater - Oklahoma State - from 1986 until His first head coaching stint was at Oral Roberts where he guided the Golden Eagles to the NIT in , their first postseason appearance since Self is 13-7 in the NCAA Tournament. KU returns 35.6 percent of its scoring and 42.4 percent of its rebounding from What s New The University of Kansas men's basketball team signed three highly-touted recruits - Mario Chalmers, Micah Downs and Julian Wright - to national letters-of-intent, coach Bill Self announced Nov. 10, All three signees ended their senior seasons being named McDonald s All-Americans to mark the first time in KU history three recruits had been awarded the honor in the same season. MARIO CHALMERS is a point guard from Anchorage, Alaska. His senior season he averaged 26 points a game at Bartlett High School. As a junior, the 6-1 Chalmers averaged 23.2 points, six assists and 5.8 rebounds per game. When he signed with KU, Chalmers was ranked No. 12 nationally by Rivals.com and is the top-rated point guard by the service. He chose KU over Wake Forest, Arizona, North Carolina and Georgia Tech. From Seattle, Wash., MICAH DOWNS averaged 24.8 points and 12.2 rebounds for Juanita High School in Kirkland, Wash. His junior year, the 6-8 Downs averaged 19.7 points, 11.8 rebounds and 3.6 assists at Juanita H.S. When the shooting guard inked with KU he was ranked No. 14 nationally by Rivals.com and the fourth-rated shooting guard. Downs chose Kansas over Duke, Gonzaga and Washington. JULIAN WRIGHT is a forward from Chicago Heights, Ill., who averaged 14.9 points and seven rebounds his senior season at Homewood-Flossmoor High School. As a junior the 6-8 Wright averaged 10.4 points, seven rebounds and 4.9 assists. Wright, a member of the Junior National Select Team in 2005, is ranked No. 10 overall by Rivals.com and the No. 2 small forward when he signed with Kansas last November. He chose KU over Arizona, Illinois and DePaul. 20/10 Winning Seasons Kansas 23-7 record marked the 16th straight season the Jayhawks have won 23 or more games dating back to and the 21st time in the last 22 years KU has notched 22 or more victories. Additionally, the 20-win plateau was the 34th in school history and KU has won 10 or more league games for the last 11 seasons and 43 times overall. This season also marked the seventh straight year head coach Bill Self has won 20 or more games for his career.

3 Conference Titles With its win against Kansas State March 2, Kansas claimed a share of its fifth Big 12 and 48th overall conference title. The win marked the second Big 12 team title this season as the KU soccer team tied Texas A&M for the regular-season title last fall. KU has won seven Big 12 championships since the inception of the league. In men s basketball, KU s 48 conference titles are more than twice as many as Texas 23, which is next on the list. "Phog" Allen, the Jayhawks' head coach for 39 years, Allen Fieldhouse is labeled by many as one of the best places in America to watch a college basketball game. The Fieldhouse was dedicated on March 1, 1955, as the Jayhawks defeated Kansas State, 77-67, before an overflow throng of 17,228. This season, Allen Fieldhouse celebrated its 50th year of existence. KU celebrated the anniversary of the Fieldhouse around the March 2 game against Kansas State -- the first opponent for KU in the facility. Stewart Transfers to Kansas Head coach Bill Self announced on Jan. 11 that wing/guard Rodrick Stewart is enrolled at the University of Kansas and has started to practice with the team. The 6-4 Stewart (Seattle, Wash.) will not be eligible to play for the Jayhawks until January 2006, in accordance with NCAA transfer rules. He played in as a freshman at Southern California with his twin brother, Lodrick, but did not play in the fall of 2004 because of academic reasons. 7 K a n s a s B a s k e t b a l l - B i l l S e l f B i o Bill Self Head Coach / Oklahoma State 85 / Two seasons at KU (47-16) / 12 seasons overall ( ) Bill Self, one of the most impressive coaches in the college game today, is in his second season as head coach at the University of Kansas. In Self won his fifth league title as a head coach. He won two titles at Tulsa (1999, 2000), two at Illinois (2001, 2002) and a share of the Big 12 title this season. Self recorded his 250th career win at Kansas State on Feb. 9. His win against Colorado on Feb. 12 marked his seventh straight 20-win season as a head coach and eighth overall. In his 12th season as a head coach, Self has compiled an overall record of (.677), including a (.746) record in his second season at KU. He has posted a 13-7 mark in NCAA Tournament play. He is a fourtime finalist for the Naismith Coach of the Year Award (2000, 2001, 2002 and 2003), and he was named National Coach of the Year by The Sporting News in In addition, Self has led three different teams to the NCAA Elite Eight over the past five years. Self came to Lawrence from the University of Illinois, where he guided the Fighting Illini to a record over three seasons, including two Big Ten regular-season championships, a Big Ten Tournament title and three straight appearances in the NCAA Tournament. In Self s first season in Champaign, the Illini advanced to the NCAA Elite Eight for the first time since Prior to his stint at Illinois, Self coached at Tulsa from 1998 to 2000, where he led the Golden Hurricane to a record of in three seasons, including making the NCAA Tournament in 1999 and Tulsa went 32-5 in 2000, setting a school single-season record for victories, and the Golden Hurricane made the NCAA Elite Eight that year. Self began his head coaching career at Oral Roberts, where he resurrected the Golden Eagles program. Before Self took over the reigns, ORU had compiled the worst record in the program s history with a 5-22 mark in Although Self s first ORU team managed just six victories in , the win total increased to 10 the following year. In his third season at the helm, Self guided the Golden Eagles to an 18-9 record. In , ORU registered a 21-7 mark and made the school s first postseason tournament appearance since , receiving an invitation to the NIT. Prior to his appointment at ORU, Self spent seven seasons as an assistant coach at Oklahoma State University. He originally joined the Cowboys staff for the season and spent the next four years working under then-osu head coach Leonard Hamilton. In the three seasons prior to his arrival at ORU, Self served as an assistant on Eddie Sutton s staff at Oklahoma State. During Self s seven seasons at OSU, the team advanced to postseason play a total of five times, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament ( ) and two straight appearances in the National Invitation Tournament ( ). OSU posted a cumulative record during his tenure, including a mark of (.742) in his final three seasons. Before Oklahoma State, Self spent the season on Larry Brown s coaching staff at Kansas. While Self was at KU, the Jayhawks registered a 35-4 record and advanced to the NCAA Final Four. A native of Edmond, Okla., Self competed collegiately at Oklahoma State where he was a four-year letterwinner from 1982 to 1985 and was an All-Big Eight freshman selection in He received his bachelor s degree in business in 1985 and a master s degree in athletic administration in 1989, both from Oklahoma State. He and his wife, Cindy, have two children: daughter Lauren and son Tyler.
