3 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 3 HEAD COACH PHIL MARTELLI Now in his 12th season as head coach at Saint Joseph s, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post-season participant and a key player on the national scene. Martelli turned in another top-notch coaching performance in , as the Hawks went from a record in February to win the final five games of the regular season, and three straight in the conference tournament, to reach the Atlantic 10 championship for the second year in a row, falling just one point short of the title. The Hawks were rewarded with their sixth consecutive postseason bid, but saw the season come to an end in the NIT Second Round, closing with a mark. Martelli s effort was similar to the previous season where he turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job than in when he was the consensus National Coach of the Year. Faced with the loss of two NBA first-round draft picks from the squad that went 30-2, the Hawks struggled early on, but Martelli reworked the team s style of play to guide SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of 2005 to finish Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14-2) and won its fifth straight regular-season title to tie the league record. The Hawks garnered the top seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row and reached the championship game. He was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. The Hawks earned their fifth consecutive postseason bid and made an exciting six-game run in the NIT, falling on a last-second shot in the championship game. It marked the second time in his career that he guided SJU to the NIT title game. Martelli s 12-year career record is now , but more impressively, his teams have gone in the previous six seasons, an average of over 23 victories per year. He currently ranks third on SJU s all-time list for coaching victories and needs just 10 to surpass Hall of Famer Jack Ramsay s total of 234. Martelli is also fourth in winning percentage (.642) among SJU coaches. Setting the school record for wins in a season in 2004 (30), Martelli has guided SJU to 20 or more victories five times in 11 seasons. He is in Atlantic 10 play, which is the most conference wins for any active coach in the A-10. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most as his 17 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 11 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of Ramsay s 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.680 postseason winning percentage (17-8) and has taken Saint Joseph s to the postseason in six consecutive years, and eight times in his 11 seasons. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference or regional honor, in six of his 11 seasons. In the summer of 2005, Martelli served as the head coach of the USA Men s U21 World Championship Team, which competed at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina, and earned a fifth-place finish. It was the coach's third assignment with USA Basketball. In , Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball with its undefeated regular season, a numberone national ranking and number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by consensus National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks advanced to the Elite Eight. After 10 years as an assistant at SJU, Martelli was named the school s 14th head coach in 1995 and is just the third non-alumnus to hold the position. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season ( ) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. Prior to his arrival at SJU, Martelli spent seven years as head basketball coach at Bishop Kenrick High School. At Kenrick, he led his team to six straight Catholic League playoff appearances, a school re c o rd, and still owns the school's all-time mark for wins with 108. M a rtelli began his career as the junior varsity coach at Cardinal O'Hara High in Springfield, PA, for the season. He moved on the following year to become an assistant at his alma mater, where he helped guide Widener to the NCAA Division III Final Four. After that season, he accepted the head job at Kenrick. As a player, the St. Joseph s Prep graduate was part of Wi d e n e r s NCAA Tournament teams in both and , serving as team co-captain as a senior. Martelli and his wife Judy, a former basketball player with the legendary Immaculata College teams, have three children. Philip, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant basketball coach at Niagara University, Jimmy is an assistant coach at Randolph-Macon College, and Elizabeth is a sophomore attending Saint Joseph s THE MARTELLI FILE Career Record: (12 years) Atlantic 10 Record: Birthdate: August 31, 1954 Hometown: Media, PA Education: Widener University, 1976 Playing Career: Widener University, College Coaching Career: Head Coach, Saint Joseph s, July 20, 1995 to present; Assistant Coach, Saint Joseph s, to Family: Wife, Judy; children - Philip, Jr., Jimmy, Elizabeth Honors: Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year (2005, 2004, 2001, 1997) Consensus National Coach of the Year (2004) USBWA District Coach of the Year (2004, 1997) Eastern College Coach of the Year- Herb Good Club (2004, 2003, 2001, 1997) Philadelphia Big 5 Coach of the Year (2004, 1997, 1996) Honorary Doctorate, Widener University, 2004 March of Dimes 2004 Citizen of the Year M A RTELLI YEAR-BY-YEAR YEAR Totals OVERALL W L ATLANTIC W L PCT PCT POSTSEASON NIT Runner-up NCAA Sweet 16 NCAA 2nd Round NIT 2nd Round NCAA 1st Round NCAA Elite Eight NIT Runner-up NIT 2nd Round MOVING UP THE LADDER... 4 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 4 LAST TIME OUT: SJU put together an impressive win over Bucknell, to end a two-game losing streak against the Bison. The Hawks trailed in the early going, 18-12, nine minutes into the game, but then turned up the intensity on defense, forcing three straight Bison turnovers and tying the game, 21-21, with 5:49 to play. Pat Calathes then hit a 3-pointer to give the Hawks a lead they would never relinquish. That started a 13-1 Hawk run, which included seven points from Nivins, that gave SJU a lead with under two minutes left in the half. After a Bison basket, Jawan Carter hit a 3-pointer from the deep left corner to give the Hawks a advantage at the half. Ahmad Nivins had 15 points and nine rebounds, Calathes scored 14 and Rob Ferguson had 11 points. INSIDE INFO: SJU players might be hearing the words, pass it inside more than they have in the past few years, with frontcourt players Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins already proving to be the main scoring threats. This is a marked change from the guard-dominated teams of the last few years. Ferguson and Nivins have lived up to that billing so far with a pair of double-figure games. Nivins currently leads the team with 18.0 ppg while Ferguson is scoring 14.7 ppg. DEE-FENSE: The Hawks turned up the defense against Bucknell and that was one of the keys to the win. Freshman D.J. Rivera came off the bench to harrass the Bison offense and record four steals. The freshman earned high praise from Phil Martelli as he called Rivera s effort Barley-like, referring to former Hawk Tyrone Barley (2004), who was known for his tenacious defense. DOWN BUT NOT OUT: The injury bug bit the Hawks early as freshman Darrin Govens suffered a fractured hand in just 12 minutes of action in the opener vs. Fairfield. The guard broke the fourth metacarpal of his right hand and underwent surgery on Nov. 17. His timetable for return to the court is still undetermined, but he has begun rehabilitation and will be evaluated on a weekly basis. NOTICING NIVINS: Ahmad Nivins lived up to the high expectations with a career-high 20 points in the win over Fairfield. The sophomore made his first five shots of the second half en route to scoring 15 points in that period. He finished with nine rebounds and made 7-of-9 shots from the field. He followed that with 19 points on 8-for-11 shooting at Lafayette, and a 15-point, 9-rebound game against Bucknell. BALANCING ACT: Five Hawks scored in double figures at Lafayette, including freshmen Jawan Carter (18) and Garrett Williamson (11). The 81 points scored by SJU was the most since an win over St. Bonaventure on Feb. 4, GIVEAWAYS: Turnovers continue to plague the Hawks. In fact, they ve had more turnovers than their opponents in all three games, with a high of 22 in the season opener. SJU had only five in the first half at Lafayette, but committed 16 in the second half, including four in the final two minutes that allowed Lafayette to close to within five points. FRESH FACES: Phil Martelli brought in another stellar recruiting class this year. Freshmen Darrin Govens, D.J. Rivera and Garrett Williamson held three of the five spots on the Pennsylvania All- State 1st Team as chosen by Associated Press. Rounding out the highly-recognized class, Jawan Carter was an All-State honoree and Delaware s Player of the Year, while Rockwell Moody garnered Virginia Independent Schools All-State recognition. Four of the players were 1,000-point scorers in their scholastic careers- Carter (2,462); Govens (1,598), Williamson (1,349) Rivera (1,122). The four combined amassed a total of 6,531 points. SJU s recruits also come from succesful high school programs. Carter (Ta t n a l l School), Williamson (Lower Merion) and Moody (Bishop O Connell) saw their teams each win state titles while Govens Chester squad reached the title game (vs. Lower Merion) and Rivera s Neumann- Goretti team captured the Philadelphia Catholic League title. ON THE LINE: Saint Joseph s led the nation in free throw percentage last season (79.9 percent), but are without three players from that squad who shot 79 percent or better. But despite those missing players, the Hawks have gotten off to a good start from the line, making 74.4 percent. All five starters are shooting 70 percent or better. PERIMETER PLAY: SJU entered the season without that defined 3- point threat that they ve had over the past few years. But the Hawks have knocked down the three s by committee, making 47.5 percent as a team. Rob Ferguson leads the way hitting 8-of-11 for a blistering 72.7 percent. Jawan Carter has made 41.7 percent of his three s, which included a 4-for-5 effort at Lafayette. FOLLOWING IN THE FOOTSTEPS: Jawan Carter is the first freshman to start at point guard since Jameer Nelson did so in Carter, who hails from the same hometown as Nelson, (Chester, PA), finished his high school career at the Tatnall School as Delaware s all-time leading scorer with 2,464 points. GUARDED OPTIMISM: The Hawks are starting two freshmen - Jawan Cart e r and G a rrett Wi l l i a m s o n - in the backcourt. Classmates Darrin Govens and D.J. Rivera were the first two guards off the bench, but Govens injury will change that rotation. PAT S PLAY: The Hawks are looking for big things from 6-10 guard Pat Calathes. The junior came on strong at the end of last year, averaging 10.7 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.4 assists in the final seven games. He had four double-figure scoring games, shot 48.2 percent (27-for-56) from the field and made 15 of 16 free throws during that span. He s gotten off to a good start with three doublefigure scoring games to average 12.3 ppg, while grabbing 6.3 rebounds per game. YOUTH BE SERVED: Phil Martelli is putting one of his youngest teams on the floor this year, with five freshmen on the squad of 14. Only three returning players - Rob Ferguson, Pat Calathes, and Ahmad Nivins- averaged double figures in minutes last season. Ferguson averaged 30.6 minutes per game, with Nivins seeing 22.7 minutes and Calathes posting just 17 per game. The freshmen have already seen ample playing time and on a number of instances,

5 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 5 Jawan Carter, D.J. Rivera and Garrett Williamson have been on the floor at the same time. CHESTER PIPELINE: Jawan Carter is not the only Hawk freshman with the Chester, PA, ties. Darrin Govens played for Chester High School and was the Class 4A Pennsylvania Player of the Year while finishing his career with 1,598 points. Carter and Govens are distant cousins and have been friends since they were children. NO HARM, NO FOUL: Phil Martelli was concerned about the ability of Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins to stay out of foul trouble to ensure that each sees quality time on the floor. So far, it hasn t been an issue as the players have seven fouls each this season. At Lafayette, Ferguson didn t get whistled for his second foul until there were two minutes left in the game, and Nivins earned his third with just 28 seconds to play. DEAN OF COACHES: Phil Martelli owns the most Atlantic 10 wins among active coaches with 114. His winning percentage in conference games (.647) is also the highest among active coaches who have been in the league for more than one season. Martelli owns the longest tenure at one school of any of the league s coaches. Only Jim Baron of Rhode Island has been in the A-10 longer (14 years), but it s been at two schools, St. Bonaventure and URI. PRESEASON PICKS: The Hawks were picked to finish eighth in the Atlantic 10, in the preseason voting of media and coaches. In , SJU finished fifth in the conference after being picked sixth in the preseason. The Hawks took that even one step better, reaching the Atlantic 10 title game and falling two points short to Xavier. Freshman Jawan Carter was named to the Preseason Atlantic 10 All-Rookie Team. LONE STAR: Artur Surov is the only senior on the Hawks squad. Arvydas Lidzius entered SJU the same year as Surov, but he sat out last season to concentrate on academics and is classified as a junior this year. Surov and Lidzius are the last remaining players from the NCAA Elite Eight team. Rob Ferguson was also here at SJU that year, but redshirted the season. SIGN HIM UP: Idris (pronounced E-driss) Hilliard signed a national letter of intent to attend Saint Joseph s and will enroll in the University in the fall of We are delighted to add Idris to our program. He is first, and foremost, a terrific young man with an exceptional work ethic. He has the multiple skills that lead me to believe he will have a successful career here at Saint Joseph s, said Martelli. Hilliard, a 6-7, 205-pound forward from Roselle, NJ, and The Hun School (Princeton, NJ), was an All-State Prep First Team selection in He averaged 17.0 points and 7.0 rebounds per game, helping his team to a 17-9 record. Hilliard, who averaged 15.0 points as a sophomore, earned 2006 All-League and All-Prep honors, while also being named the 2006 Player of the Year by the Princeton Packet. He is currently listed among the Rivals.com Top 150 players for HAWK DOUBLES Double-Figure Points Streak Career Rob Ferguson 3 14* 25 Ahmad Nivins Pat Calathes 3 6* 7 Jawan Carter Garrett Williamson Alvin Mofunanya Double-Figure Rebounds Streak Career Ahmad Nivins Point Games Streak Career Ahmad Nivins Rob Ferguson Double-Doubles (pts-rebs) Streak Career Ahmad Nivins * streak dating back to HAWK LEADERS (number of games led in each category; includes shared highs) Points Rebounds Assists Steals Blocks Ahmad Nivins Pat Calathes Rob Ferguson Jawan Carter Garrett Williamson D.J. Rivera What Phil s Saying... (on Bucknell win): I wanted our team to accept the dare, because I thought this was a toughness dare... I dared them before the game to take a toughness test. And that's what that took. We have a long way to go in terms of basketball, but at least for the toughness part of it, I'll take it and we can build on it. (on D.J. Rivera s defense against Bucknell): He s a fierce competitor. Certainly at the defensive end of the floor you re going to get maximum effort.. You have to look at the tape to figure out how he got two of those balls. But the two balls he came up, and this is with the greatest reverence, that was like Tyrone Barley. One second the guy had the ball and all of a sudden he (D.J) had it. I was happy with the toughness at that point. (on Rob Ferguson and Ahmad Nivins): I think at the end of the year, those two guys have to be in the discussion for all-league positions. That s what I think has to happen if we re to have success. They are both foul-prone.. and we can t afford to have them sitting on the bench for long periods of time. The bottom line is - at the end of the year, you have to be talking about two of the best 15 players in the league. This team has a good work attitude. They ll do what we ask them to do. It s a team that will struggle to score, but a team that will certainly compete.

6 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 6 THREE FOR ALL: SJU owns a streak of 396 straight games with at least one 3-pointer made, a string which began at the start of the season. The last game in which a Hawks team did not hit a three was at Southwest Missouri State on Mar. 18, NO PLACE LIKE HOME: SJU played only had nine games in Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse last season and compiled a 5-4 re c o rd. This year, t h e Hawks will have 11 home games on campus. Heading into this season SJU owned a 53-8 re c o rd in the Fieldhouse over the previous six years (86.8 winning percentage). During the course of 57 seasons in the Fieldhouse, the Hawks have won 80 percent of their contests, with the overall re c o rd now HALLMARK OF SUCCESS: Entering this season, SJU had compiled a record in the past six seasons, with six consecutive postseason berths. NEW FACES: Phil Mart e l l i has two new faces on the bench with firstyear assistant coaches David Duda and Doug Overt o n. Duda served as the head coach at Mart e l l i s alma mater Widener for the past eight seasons, where he compiled a re c o rd with two conference titles and t h ree trips to the NCAA Division III To u rnament. Overton is a familiar face in Philadelphia basketball, starring at La Salle and then playing in the NBA for 11 seasons, concluding his career with the L.A. Clippers. An All-Big 5 selection, he also played for the Philadelphia 76ers and came to SJU after a year as the director of player development for that team. F o rmer SJU standout Mark Bass is the veteran on the staff, as he is now in his eighth year with Martelli. Duda and Overton replaced Monte Ross, who is now the head coach at the University of Delaware, and Mike Rice, who is associate coach at the University of Pittsburgh. is expected that men's and women's basketball will need to play one full season off campus during the heaviest construction period, but both squads will retain access to the basketball center and new practice area. ALL IN THE FAMILY: Coaching certainly runs in the Martelli blood as the head coach s two sons are currently working the sidelines. Oldest son Philip, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant coach at Niagara University. Jimmy, a 2005 graduate of Dickinson College, is assisting at Randolph-Macon College. CRADLE OF COACHES: The Saint Joseph s coaching connection is an impressive one. A total of seven Saint Joseph s graduates have gone on to become head coaches in the NBA, and SJU is now tied with Illinois for second on the list of universities with alums that have served as NBA head coaches. Indiana tops the list with 11 graduates that have coached in the league. Below is the list of former Hawks who have been NBA head coaches. Player (Class) NBA Teams W-L (yrs.) Jack Ramsay ( 49) Phila., Buf., Port., Ind (21) Jim Lynam ( 63) L.A. Clippers, Phila., Wash (10) Matt Guokas ( 67) Phila., Orlando (7) Paul Westhead ( 61) L.A. Lakers, Chicago, Denver (6) Jack McKinney ( 57) L.A. Lakers, Indiana (5) George Senesky ( 43) Philadelphia (3) Jim O Brien ( 74) Philadelphia, Boston (5) LOOKING AHEAD: SJU makes a quick turn a round and hosts Boston University on November 27 at the Fieldhouse. Following that is the first intra-city game on Saturd a y, December 2 against Drexel at the Palestra. WAITING ON THE SIDELINE: Philadelphia native Tasheed Carr will sit out this season after transferring to the Hawks from Iowa State. The 6-4 guard averaged 5.8 points and 2.2 rebounds as the Cyclones sixth man last season, and was named to the Big 10 All- Bench Team. Carr attended University City H.S., but then graduated from Mt. Zion Academy in North Carolina. Carr can practice with SJU and will have two years of eligibility left. IF YOU BUILD IT...: An expansion of Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse and a dedicated center for men's and women's basketball highlight a comprehensive plan for enhancing varsity and recreational athletics at Saint Joseph's. The total project will proceed in three phases over the next several years. Phase one will be the construction of a 17,700-square foot center adjacent to the existing Fieldhouse that will house state-of-the-art facilities for men's and women's basketball. The center is to include new locker rooms, coaches' offices, meeting areas, and dedicated academic and study space. Phase two will see the relocation of at least five varsity sports and the student recreation/intramural program by 2009 to SJU's Maguire Campus (Episcopal Academy), followed by renovations to the existing Rec Center to house new athletic offices along with locker rooms and meeting space for the remaining varsity sports. Martelli s show combines a Tonight Show format with unique guests and just a few basketball highlights. The show will air locally on Comcast SportsNet beginning in January. INTERNET: Information for Saint Joseph s basketball is found at SJU s athletic website, with game notes, and live in-game statistics for all Hawk home games, and selected road games. The newly redesigned site introduces video streaming for the first time this year. Through Hawks All-Access, fans can watch and listen to every game from Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse. THE HAWK The Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for more than a half a century, having celebrated its golden anniversary in One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph s motto, The Hawk Will Never Die. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the season. Brennan, an ex-marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for three years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figure eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap-o-meter on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to every game, and the student who holds the position gains a full scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semester, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. Jim Miller is this year s Hawk mascot, and the 30th student to wear the wings. He is a junior public administration major from Broomall, PA.
