2 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 2 HEAD COACH PHIL MARTELLI In 10 years at Saint Joseph s, Phil Martelli has built a program that is consistently one of the top in the conference, a perennial post-season participant and a key player on the national scene. Although he swept the National Coach of the Year honors in 2004, Martelli turned in perhaps a more remarkable coaching job in as the Hawks were faced with the loss of two NBA first-round draft picks from the squad that went 30-2 and posted a perfect regular season (27-0). After the Hawks struggled in the early going, Martelli reworked the team s style of play to guide SJU to 21 wins in the calendar year of Saint Joseph s posted the conference s best record (14-2) and won its fifth straight regular-season title to tie the league record. The Hawks garnered the top seed in the conference tournament for the second year in a row and reached the championship game. For his efforts, he was named the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year for the second straight season and the fourth time in his career. The Hawks earned their fifth consecutive postseason bid and made an exciting six-game run in the NIT, falling on a last-second shot in the championship game. It marked the second time in his career that Martelli had guided SJU to the NIT title game. Martelli s 10-year career record is now , but more impressively, his teams have gone in the past five seasons (not counting this year). He currently ranks third on SJU s all-time list for coaching victories and is fourth in winning percentage (.648). Setting the school record for wins in a season in 2004 (30), the coach has guided SJU to 20 or more victories five times in 10 seasons. Martelli is in Atlantic 10 play, ranking him third on the A-10 s list for conference regular season victories. Martelli has also been at his best when it counts the most. His 16 postseason wins (6 NCAA, 10 NIT) are the most in school history, ahead of coaching legend Jack Ramsay s total of 12. Martelli ranks first among Hawk coaches with a.695 postseason winning percentage (16-7). The coach has taken Saint Joseph s to the postseason in five consecutive years, with three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Martelli s efforts and the success of the SJU program have been recognized on a consistent basis. In fact, he has earned a Coach of the Year award, whether it be a city, conference or regional honor, in six of his 10 seasons. In the summer of 2005, Martelli served as the head coach of the USA Men s U21 World Championship Team, which competed at the FIBA U21 World Championship in Argentina, and earned a fifth-place finish. It was the coach's third assignment with USA Basketball having served as a USA assistant coach for gold-medal winning teams at both the 2001 FIBA World Championship for Young Men and the 1998 Goodwill Games. In , Martelli guided a focused and unselfish squad that became the most compelling story in college basketball with its undefeated regular season, a number-one national ranking and number-one seed in the NCAA Tournament. Led by consensus National Player of the Year Jameer Nelson, the Hawks advanced to the Elite Eight. After 10 years as an assistant at SJU, Martelli was named the school s 14th head coach in 1995 and is just the third non-alumnus to hold the position. Martelli burst onto the scene in his first season ( ) and took the squad to the NIT championship game. The senior forward made four 3-pointers in as many attempts over the game's final 14:27, but it was his free throw with 17 seconds to go that gave the Hawks a lead. KU s Micah Downs took a 3-point attempt at :05 but it bounced off the rim, and SJU grabbed the rebound. Stachitas was 6-for-7 from 3-point range and the Hawks finished 10-for-21 from beyond the arc, and 6-for-9 in the second half. Dwayne Lee added 13 points and seven assists, while Ahmad Nivins had 11 points. The Hawks benefitted from a 6-for-19 performance from the foul line by Kansas while holding leading scorer Sasha Kaun (14.5 avg) to two points. Kansas opened with a 17-4 run and was up with 2:27 left in the first half. SJU closed out an 11-2 run with a 3-pointer by Lee at the buzzer that got them within 3431 at halftime. SJU opened the second half with a 9-3 run, during which it took the lead for the first time. After Kansas regained it at 6:19, Stachitas hit his sixth 3-pointer at 4:19 to give the Hawks the lead for good.

He made 9-of-12 from the field, with 6-of-7 from 3-point range, including a crucial three at 4:16 to give the Hawks a lead. The senior hit one free throw with 17 seconds remaining to give SJU a thre e - point cushion. His eff o rt was reminiscent of last year s sharpshooter Pat C a rroll, as Stachitas was constantly moving and using screens to get his shots, while hitting from all areas of the floor. He is currently leading the Atlantic 10 in 3-point percentage (.696) and ranks third in scoring (19.8). REVENGE FACTOR: The Hawks are playing three consecutive games against teams which handed them losses last season - Kansas, Ohio State and Bucknell. SJU already gained re v e n g e on Kansas from a 40- point loss in November, 2004, defeating the Jayhawks in Tu e s d a y s Jimmy V Classic. On New Ye a r s Eve 2004, Ohio State beat the Hawks, 72-61, and on Dec. 28, 2004, Bucknell scored a win at Alumni Memorial FH. AWAY FROM HOME: SJU has not played at Alumni Memorial Fieldhouse since the season opener on November 18, and won t until J a n u a ry 4. But mixed in this eight-game stretch is two contests at Saint J o s e p h s home away from home, the Palestra. TAKING ADVA N TA G E : Saint Joseph s outscored Kansas in points off t u rnovers, In the four victories this year, SJU holds a combined edge in points off turnovers. SURE SHOTS: F ree throw shooting has been one of the team s s t rengths, while showing a marked improvement from last year. In , SJU h o v e red around the 50 to 60 percent mark at the line. This season, the team is making a league-best 81.8% of its free thro w attempts. Along the way was an impressive 30-for-34 perf o rmance at Davidson, led by Chet Stachitas ( f o r-11) and Ahmad Nivins ( f o r- 10). Stachitas and Nivins are converting over 90 percent of their fre e t h rows on the year, with Abdulai Jalloh at 84.2%. N O T-SO SURE SHOTS: As strong as the Hawks have been from the foul line this season, free throw shooting was almost their downfall against Kansas. SJU shot a season-low 70 percent from the line, missing six f ree throws in the second half. Those misses came at critical times as Abdulai Jalloh (a 90 percent shooter going into the game) missed thre e in the final five minutes. Dwayne Lee missed one with 32 seconds to play and Chet Stachitas missed a free throw at :17. ON TA R G E T: The Hawks are shooting the ball well from all spots on the f l o o r. The team is hitting 49.2 percent from the field, 81.8 percent fro m the foul line and 46.0 percent of its 3-point attempts, leading the A-10 in two categories and ranking second in the other. SJU also ranks among the nation s leaders in the NCAA stats: 2nd - FT% 4th - 3-point% 25th- FG% ON BOARD: The Hawks are rebounding by committee with no dominant player on the boards. In fact, guard Abdulai Jalloh tops the team with 5.8 per game while Ahmad Nivins is grabbing 5.4 and 6-10 guard Pat Calathes is averaging 4.6 per game. SJU holds a healthy re b o u n d- ing margin over its opponents, at IRON MEN: The Hawks only went seven deep on Tuesday night and seniors Dwayne Lee and Chet Stachitas saw all 40 minutes of action. Regular starters Abdulai Jalloh and Ahmad Nivins came off the bench vs. Kansas as Phil Martelli cited that they were unpre p a red. D a v e M a l l o n and Pat Calathes replaced them in the lineup, but Jalloh and Nivins both entered the game early in the first half. THE SET-UP MAN: Dwayne Lee led the Atlantic 10 in assists last season and currently holds the lead again this year with his 6.0 average. If Lee were to finish this season atop the rankings, he would become only the second player in conference history to lead the league in assists for two consecutive years. The other player to do that was Lee s mentor, Hawk great Jameer Nelson.

4 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 4 KEEPING THEM DOWN: In the past two wins, Saint Joseph s has held the opponents leading scorer well below his average. D rexel - Dominick Mejia (15.2 ppg) - 8 pts Kansas - Sasha Kaun (15.4 ppg) - 2 pts ON THE OFFENSIVE: Prior to the season, Phil Martelli voiced his conc e rn as to how the Hawks were going to score points. He set 65 points as a goal, but thought it could be a struggle. The Hawks have gone beyond that, with 70 or more points in four of five games. Included in that is a 94-point eff o rt in the overtime loss at Davidson (100-94), which helped the SJU average to 75.0 ppg. FOUL PLAY: One thing that has hindered the Hawks has been the number of personal fouls. SJU has already had five disqualifications in five games - - last season, they had a total of 11 in 36 games. Rob Ferg u s o n has fouled out twice, at Davidson and at Drexel. COMEBACK KIDS: Saint Joseph s fought back from a 17-4 deficit against Kansas to score the win. It was the largest deficit overcome for a victory this year. THIS AND THAT: Abdulai Jalloh is a player whom P h i l M a rtelli s a y s give you a little of this and a little of that. Case in point - - Jalloh had a c a re e r-high 22 points and nine rebounds against Drexel, but also committed five turnovers. Included in those five was one where he saved the ball under the Drexel basket, leading directly to two points for the Dragons, thus earning an earful from Martelli. Jalloh also excelled on the defensive end, limiting Dre x e l s leading scorer Dominick Mejia to eight points in 17 minutes. BALANCED AT TA C K : After losing one of the top scorers in school history in Pat Carroll, there was a preseason question as to who would e m e rge as a top score r. The Hawks have taken the more balanced a p p roach with three players currently averaging double figures. C h e t S t a c h i t a s is ahead of the pack with his 19.8 average, while A b d u l a i J a l l o h (12.8) and Dwayne Lee (12.4) round out the group. STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE: The Hawks are facing a challenging schedule this year, meeting seven teams which reached the 2005 NCAA To u rnament. And when looking at ESPN s early-season predictions, SJU has 10 NCAA teams on the slate with 12 games against ESPN's preseason NCAA To u rnament bracket: Davidson, Kansas, Ohio State. Bucknell, Gonzaga, Xavier (twice), George Washington (twice), Charlotte, Pennsylvania and Villanova. SJU is currently in the midst of a eight-game stretch in which it faces seven of those teams. SOPHOMORE STA N D O U T: Rob Ferg u s o n has been one of the Hawks best players in the early season, shooting 64.3 percent from the field. But the sophomore has only taken seven shots in the last two games, with just two shots against Kansas. The sophomore had a strong off e n- sive game at Davidson, making four of his first five shots, and going 6- f o r-8 in the contest before fouling out late in the game. NIVINS NUMBERS: F reshman Ahmad Nivins re g i s t e red his first collegiate double-figure game with 14 points at Davidson, while also adding nine rebounds and making all 10 of his free throw attempts. He tops the Hawks in blocked shots (1.8) and is second in rebounding (5.4). SHOOTING FOR SIX: Among the Hawks goals this season is to become the first team in Atlantic 10 history to win six consecutive regular-season titles. With five titles, SJU is currently tied with the Massachusetts teams from 1991 to FOR THREE: SJU made a season-high 54.5 percent of its 3-point attempts vs. Drexel, going 6-for-11 from beyond the arc. Chet Stachitas is leading the way, hitting 69.9 percent (16-for-23) of his long-range attempts. Last year, SJU averaged pointers and point attempts. SENIOR SPA R K : After starting 59 games in his care e r, Dave Mallon h a s adjusted to his role coming off the bench. The senior has provided a spark and is averaging 19.4 minutes per game. A look at Mallon s highl i g h t s : team-high 8 rebounds vs. Lafayette season-high 13 points at Davidson - game-tying 3-pt FG at the buzzer 6 points vs. Drexel - 4 straight to keep SJU s lead at double digits YOUTH MOVEMENT: The Hawks put a young starting lineup on the c o u rt for the season opener. Aside from senior starters Dwayne Lee a n d Chet Stachitas, the rest of the lineup had just one career start among the three of them on opening day. Abdulai Jalloh s t a rted the '04-05 season opener (in place of the injured Pat Carroll), but he came off the bench the remainder of the year. Sophomore Rob Ferg u s o n made his first career start, while freshman forw a rd Ahmad Nivins s t a rted his first collegiate game. This lineup has started four of five games for SJU. HIGH PROFILE HAWKS: Saint Joseph s will make a school-record eight appearances on national television this season. Today s is the second in a row and the next will be the New Year s Eve matchup with rival Gonzaga. SENIOR LEADERSHIP: S J U s seniors came up with big perf o rmances at Davidson. Chet Stachitas s c o red 25 points against Davidson (for the second year in a row) and Dwayne Lee s c o red all of his 18 care e r- h i g h points in the second half, as the Hawks battled back from an 11-point deficit. Dave Mallon s c o red 13 points off the bench and sent the game into overtime with a 3-pointer from the top of the key at the buzzer. FILLING THE VOID: For the second consecutive season, head coach Phil Martelli has to replace an Atlantic 10 Player of the Year (Pat Carroll) and a player who left early to pursue a career in the NBA (Dwayne Jones). With their departures, the Hawks also lost over 2,000 points and 1,110 rebounds. Carroll averaged 18.3 points and was named the conference s Co-Player of the Year, as well as an Honorable Mention All-America by AP. Dwayne Jones, an All-A-10 selection and the league s Defensive Player of the Year, entered the NBA Draft and although going undrafted, signed a contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. The previous year, Jameer Nelson captured national and conference player of the year honors and was a first-round NBA Draft pick along with Delonte West, who left SJU after his junior year. CLASS ACT: Fourth-year seniors Dwayne Lee, Dave Mallon and Chet Stachitas have had a great deal of success thus far on Hawk Hill, and will be striving to take their place among the best four-year

5 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 5 classes in school history. The trio has now compiled an record (78.6 winning percentage) in their four years to date. The school record is set by Jameer Nelson and Tyrone Barley, while last year s duo of Pat Carroll and John Bryant compiled a mark. THREE FOR ALL: SJU owns a streak of 365 straight games with at least one 3-pointer made, a string which began at the start of the season. The last game in which a Saint Joseph s team did not hit a three was at Southwest Missouri State on March 18, ALL IN THE FAMILY: Coaching certainly runs in the Martelli blood as the head coach s two sons are currently working the sidelines. Oldest son Philip, Jr., a 2003 SJU graduate, is an assistant coach at Manhattan College. Jimmy, a 2005 graduate of Dickinson College, is assisting at his alma mater. PALESTRA PLAY: With the formation of the Philadelphia Big 5 in 1955, SJU began utilizing The Palestra as a home venue. Since that year, the Hawks have played at least one home game in the historic arena every season. SJU has compiled a re c o rd (.679) at The Palestra, with m o re wins than the program's victory total at Alumni Memorial F i e l d h o u s e (304-72). The Hawks will play at the famed building six times, with three of them being counted as home games. OUT OF ACTION: Junior forward Arvydas Lidzius will not participate in games for the remaining of the semester in order to concentrate on academics. He will be able to practice, but will not travel with the team. His progress will be evaluated at the end of the semester to determine his status for future games. JERSEY GUYS: Starting point guard Dwayne Lee welcomes former high school teammate Ahmad Nivins into the starting lineup. The duo played for scholastic power St. Anthony High School in Jersey City. Lee and Nivins are among those featured in the book, The Miracle of St. Anthony, which chronicles a season with the team. TRI-CAPTAINS: Seniors Dwayne Lee, Dave Mallon and Chet Stachitas were voted tri-captains by their teammates. SIGN THEM UP: Phil Martelli locked up another strong recruiting class as four scholastic standouts signed national letters of intent to attend SJU in the fall of The class is one of seven from the Atlantic 10 to be ranked among the nation s top 50 by Hoop Scoop. Here s the class at a glance: Jawan Carter (6-0, G)- Chester, PA/Tatnall School (DE) Darrin Govens (6-1, G)- Chester, PA/Chester H.S. Rockwell Moody (6-9, F)- Arlington, VA/Bishop O Connell H.S. D.J. Rivera (6-2, G)- Philadelphia, PA/Neumann-Goretti H.S. RACKING THEM UP: SJU ranks 15th among Division I basketball programs for average amount of wins over the last five years, compiling a record (75.3 pct), averaging 24.4 victories per year. Including this season s record, that number is now (75.4) in six years NUMBERS: Hawks have won 25 games in the calendar year of SJU s turnaround last season started in January and by winning 21 games, it was one of six teams in the nation to do so. Louisville, Illinois, Pacific, Arizona and Vermont were the others. NEW MEMBERS: The Saint Joseph s Men s Basketball Hall of Fame has two new members, who were inducted on November 12. Rashid Bey, the Hawks point guard from 1994 to 1998, was a twotime All-Atlantic 10 selection and was the Big 5 s MVP in back-toback seasons. Clare Ariano, the secretary in the men s basketball office for over 20 years and three coaches, became the seventh non-player to earn a spot in the Hall of Fame. A-10 EXPANSION: The Atlantic 10 Conference has expanded to 14 teams this year with the addition of Charlotte and Saint Louis. The league has abandoned the two-division format and be one, 14-team entity. The A-10 now encompasses eight states and the District of Columbia, and places the conference in 12 of the top 59 media markets in the country. CRADLE OF COACHES: The Saint Joseph s coaching connection is an impressive one. A total of seven Saint Joseph s graduates have gone on to become head coaches in the NBA, and SJU is now tied with Illinois for second on the list of universities with alums that have served as NBA head coaches. Indiana tops the list with 11 graduates that have coached in the league. Below is the list of former Hawks who have been NBA head coaches. Player (Class) NBA Teams W-L (yrs.) 9 SAINT JOSEPH S BASKETBALL - PG. 8 SEASON OF CELEBRATIONS ON THE AIR The season is a special one for Saint Joseph s and Philadelphia basketball. It marks the 50th anniversary of the Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot and also the golden anniversary of the Philadelphia Big 5. RADIO: All Hawk games are broadcast on SportsTalk 950 (WPEN-AM) with the Saint Joseph s Sports Network team of Tom McCarthy and Joe Lunardi providing play-by-play and color commentary, respectively. The broadcast of Saint Joseph s basketball can also be heard via the internet at McCarthy, in his third year with SJSN, is one of the play-by-play broadcasters and hosts of the Philadelphia Phillies pre- and post-game shows. Lunardi, in his 16th year on the Hawks radio broadcasts, is the Assistant Vice President for University Communications at the Saint Joseph s, and is a college basketball analyst for ESPN. SJU broadcasts can also be accessed by Teamline, calling (access code 4280). THE HAWK The Saint Joseph s Hawk mascot has been flapping its wings for almost half a century, and celebrates its golden anniversary in One of the most famous mascots in college sports, the Hawk is best known for staying in constant motion by flapping its wings throughout every basketball game and representing the Saint Joseph s motto, The Hawk Will Never Die. The idea for the Hawk as a mascot was originated by Jim Brennan during the season. Brennan, an ex-marine and SJU cheerleader, at first wanted to secure an actual hawk, but later switched to the costume idea. The student government raised the 120 dollars needed to buy the initial costume, which Brennan donned for t h ree years. He made his debut as the Hawk on January 4, 1956, a win over La Salle at the Palestra. The Hawk has not missed a men s basketball game since that first season. In addition to the constant flapping, the Hawk is also recognized by its flying in figu re eights around the court during timeouts. The constant motion, coupled with the scrappy play of the University s athletic teams, helped to spawn the school s familiar slogan The Hawk Will Never Die! A few years ago, ESPN used a flap-o-meter on the national telecast of a Saint Joseph s game to estimate that the Hawk flaps its wings 3,500 times during a regulation game. The Hawk is unique because it is one of the few mascots in the nation that travels to e v e ry game, and the student who holds the position gains a full scholarship. The student, who is selected through an interview process during the previous spring semester, also serves as a team manager for the men s basketball team and travels with the squad. A n d rew Moral is this year s Hawk mascot, and the 29th student to wear the wings. He is a senior elementary education major from North Wales, PA. THE BIG 5 The Philadelphia Big 5 was born on November 23, 1954, when administrators at the five major Universities in the city f o rmulated a partnership. They agreed to participate in a men s basketball round robin- the City Series - at the Palestra on Pennsylvania s campus. For 50 years, the rivalries and comraderie have made this one of the most intense and unique arrangements in college sports. The first Big 5 game was played on December 14, 1955, with Saint Joseph s defeating Villanova, The anniversary will be commemorated this season with a number of events, with one of the feature games being the nationally-televised Saint Joseph s - Villanova matchup on February 7. HAWKTALK : Phil Martelli s HawkTalk celebrates its 10th anniversary in The most unique coach s television show in college basketball, it was named the Best Coach s Show in the Nation by The Sporting News. Martelli s show combines a Tonight Show format with unique guests and just a few basketball highlights. INTERNET: Information for Saint Joseph s basketball is found at SJU s athletics website, Game notes, live in-game statistics for all Hawk home games, and selected road games, and streaming audio of every radio broadcast can be accessed at the site.
