PRESBYTERIAN COLLEGE MEN'S BASKETBALL NOTES The Presbyterian College men s basketball team hosts Gardner-Webb Feb. 18, for the second game of the regular-season series... The Runnin Bulldogs own a slight 4-0 advantage in the series and won the last meeting, Down by 7 points in that game, PC swent on a 14-1 run to cut it to 1, but the Bulldogs used clutch defens and free throws to hang on for the win... Gardner-Webb is 15-13, 8-7, and has won its last four of six games, including a decision against Radford Feb The Runnin Bulldogs, who are averaging 75.9 ppg and 37,1 rpg, are led by LaQuincy Rideau with his 13.6 points per game... Tyrell Nelson, who is second in scoring with 13. ppg, paces the team on teh boards with The Blue Hose, 5-1 overall and 1-14 in the league, are led by freshman Jo Vontae Millner with 10.8 points and Ed Drew with 5.7 rebounds per game... Millner sat out the last two games with an injury... The Blue Hose are averaging 61.7 points and 3.7 rebounds per game... In 15 conference games Ed Drew is averaging a team-leading 10.3 points and 6.7 rebounds per game... The senior has scored in doublefigures in nine conference games and posted his first double-double of the season, leading the team against Winthrop with 15 points and 10 rebounds... His second came with 18 points and 10 rebounds against Charleston Southern... Reggie Dillard has scored in double figures the last six of eight games and has led the team in four of those... During that time he has been shooting 54.0% from the field and 44.0% from the perimeter... He is also 1-of-7 from the free throw line and has 31 assists... PC held Coastal Georgia to 5.0% shooting from the field, the second lowest percentage in PC s DI history. The Blue Hose held Toccoa Falls to.6% back in the 01 season in a win... The 30 makes from the charity stripe against Johnson & Wales are a Division I era school record for free throws made... The previous record was 8 free throws made against Longwood in The Blue Hose racked up 63 bench points in the win, a PC Division I era record... The 107 points is the second most points scored by any Big South team so far this season... The win over Furman marked the first time since 011 that PC has won its season-opener, and just the second time since moving to Division I... Keep in mind, PC has played just two opening games at home - Furman this season and Montreat in 011, both wins - The remaining road games have included Furman (015) Duke twice (014/008), Georgia Tech (013), Clemson twice (01/009), Vanderbilt (010), and Nebraska (007) J.C. He shot 5-of-13 from the field and 4-for-8 from beyond the arc, adding five rebounds, three assists, and a steal... The Blue Hose overcame a 14-point Charleston Southern lead to force overtime, but came up short as the Buccaneers held on for the win Feb. 4, in Charleston... Ed Drew recorded his second double-double of the season with 18 points and 10 rebounds... Jo'Vontae Millner paced the team in scoring with After Charleston Southern pulled ahead 64-6 in OT, Millner made an old-fashioned three-point play to give PC its first lead since the opening minute of the game... The lead would be short-lived though as the Bucs made a shot from long range... Dillard looked to tie the game but was called for a charge and fouled out... Keeling made two trips to the line and converted all four charity shots as Charleston Southern held on for the win... Liberty used a - run in the first half to erase an early deficit and take the eventual win over the Blue Hose in the last game... Leading the PC effort were Reggie Dillard and Ed Drew, both of whom scored 1 points apiece... Ed Drew scored a season high 1 points and pulled down a team-high nine rebounds to lead the team to the 71-6 win over Longwood Jan Reggie Dillard scored 19 points, with 14 coming in the second half to help the Blue Hose quell the late Lancer rally... He also posted six assists and was a perfect seven-of-seven from the field... The 71 points for PC was the most for the Blue Hose since the 76 points scored against Longwood in the first meeting of the season... The 45.3% shooting was also the highest since that meeting. UNC Asheville shot 58.3% in the first half to build a double-digit lead early and take the eventual win... PC used a 14-1 run in the second half, which included three three-pointers from Darius Moore, to erase a 7-point Gardner-Webb lead and make it just 1, but Gardner-Webb used clutch defense and free throws to hang on and take the win in the last game for the Blue Hose, Jan Reggie Dillard led the effort with a season-high 18 points... Charleston Southern hit nine three-pointers, including seven in the first half, while holding PC to 7.3% during that time, to hand the Blue Hose a 5-73 loss in the last game, Jan Ed Drew led the team with 13 points and seven rebounds... High Point shot over 50%, including 46.7% in the second half, to lead the Panthers to the win in PC s game, Jan The Blue Hose were able to cut the margin to 18, 49-31, off a Will Adams three, at 15:57 in the second half, but the Panthers outscored PC 3-6 over the next 10 minutes to put the game out of reach... Will Adams posted his third double-digit game in four tries with a team-leading 1 points... The Winthrop men s basketball team used a 17-0 run in the second half to break open a four-point game and take the 75-5 win in PC s last game, Jan The Eagles hit 11 threepointers, including seven in the second half... PC cut the lead to early in teh second half, but the Eagles outscored the Blue Hose 7-8 in a 10-minute stretch to pull away late... PC out-rebounded Winthrop, and held a 13-9 advantage in second-chance points... Radford shot over 68% in the second half and used a late 19-9 run to pull away late, taking the win against the Blue Hose Jan PC trailed by just nine, 44-53, 10:53 to go, but the Highlanders went on a 19-9 run the next nine minutes to build a 19-point lead... Will Adams led all scorers with 1 points, most of them coming off a career-high tying five-of-eight effort from beyond the three-point arc... The 68 field goals attempted tied for eighth in the PC Division I record books, the five team blocks tied for 15th... Longwood used a 17-5 run and shot over 65% in the second half to help the Lancers rally past the Blue Hose, 79-76, Jan PC, which used a 19-5 run to end the first half leading 38-31, led 4-31 in the second before Longwood chipped away to take the lead and eventual win... Freshman Jo Vontae scored a career-high 6 points, becoming the first Blue Hose this season to go over the 0-point mark... With both teams connecting on 30 total field goals in the game, The Citadel came out on top after hitting 1-of-4 three-pointers, compared to a seven-of-19 effort from the Blue Hose... The bench came on strong for The Citadel with the Bulldogs holding the 4-5 advantage. 5 Head Coach - Gregg Nibert The season is head coach Gregg Nibert s 8th year in charge of the Presbyterian College men s basketball team. The winningest coach in the program s history, Nibert has led the Blue Hose to over 400 wins during his 7 years at the helm. The Blue Hose, who completed their ninth year in Division I in , posted their most wins since 01. They won their last three of five games in , including a dramatic one-point win over Radford in the opening round of the Big South Tournament. Earning Big South All-Conference and All-Tournament honors was now departed DeSean Murray. Charlie Inclan was the League All-Academic Team member. PC posted 10 wins in the season, with the last win of the season a tremendous decision over Coastal Carolina to give Coach Nibert his 40th career victory. DeSean Murray earned Big South Freshman-of-the-Year honors, with Jordan Downing a Honorable Mention All-Conference selection. The Blue Hose posted impressive wins in , including against Southern Conference foes UNCG and Appalachian State. PC earned league wins against Longwood and UNC Asheville, while Jordan Downing became the fastest player in PC Division I history to reach 1,000 career points. He earned Big South All- Conference Honorable Mention. PC finished the season with a Division I era record 14 wins and just one shy of its first non-losing season since 007. Highlighting the season was the win over then 0th-Ranked Cincinnati. It was the Blue Hose s first win over a ranked opponent in Division I history. Khalid Mutakabbir, who recorded the go-ahead three-pointer against the Bearcats, ended the season with 1,075 points, becoming the second player in PC s Division I history and 1st under Head Coach Gregg Nibert, to go over 1,000 career points. Al Lonzo Coleman ended a tremendous career at PC with 1,499 points and 786 rebounds. He also broke PC s Division I record for average points in a season with Coleman earned League All-Conference honors, while Jay Reynolds was named to the CoSIDA Capital One Academic All-District Team. The 13 wins by the men s basketball team in were the most in NCAA Division I history until this the season and included victories over Eastern Kentucky, Auburn and Wake Forest. The Blue Hose won seven Big South games including a victory over Liberty. Walt Allen was named Big South Scholar Athlete of the Year, while Khalid Mutakabbir earned Player of the Week honors the last week in January. Al Lonzo Coleman became the first PC player in Division I history and 0th under Coach Nibert to reach 1,000 career points. PC finished strong in several Big South categories including fourth in scoring defense, second in free throw percentage and three-point field goals made, third in rebounding defense and first in three-point field goal percentage. Mutakabbir was 13th in the league in scoring, with Jake Troyli close behind in 3rd and Pierre Miller in 5th. Miller was seventh in assists and eighth in three-point field goals made, while Troyli was second in free throw percentage. In , Nibert took the youngest team in the nation into some of the most difficult places to play as he redshirted three juniors which comprised nearly 60 percent of the team s offense during the season. The Blue Hose put together a solid season that saw them be in every league game. He also helped guide PC to a win in the BracketBusters tournament over Jacksonville State, helping the Big South go - in the field. On Jan. 9, Nibert s team overcame a 17-point deficit to defeat VMI in overtime, The win also marked the highest point total in PC s Division I history over a Division I opponent. In his first season in the Big South Conference, Nibert guided the Blue Hose to a.500 record, finishing the year 9-9 in conference play. The squad put together some tremendous wins, including victories over UC Davis, San Jose State and Army in non-conference play. During the Big South portion of the schedule, Nibert s team began its history in the league by posting wins at Coastal Carolina and High Point. The squad was on TV three times, including the Nov. 10 season-opener at Duke, which was televised by ESPNU. The game marked the first nationally televised contest for any Blue Hose team in school history. Al Lonzo Coleman was recognized as a second-team all-conference selection for his tremendous effort while also garnering a place on the all-academic team. Nibert is the first men s basketball coach in Presbyterian College history to reach the 300- win plateau, an honor he reached during the season after becoming the first to accomplish 00 wins at PC in the season. Chase Holmes picked up the Freshman of the Week award after scoring a career-high 4 points en route to a victory over VMI in which PC held the Keydets to 38 points below their NCAAleading points per game average in 009. During his 0-year tenure at Presbyterian College, Nibert has compiled six 0-win seasons. His Blue Hose teams finished in the top four in the South Atlantic Conference (SAC) regular season standings 14 times, winning the SAC Championship twice ( & ) and the Food Lion SAC Tournament title once ( ). He has also been named the SAC Coach-ofthe-Year twice for his efforts (1993 and 1997). Nibert is also the only coach in the history of PC basketball to lead the institution to two different postseason tournaments; guiding the Blue Hose to the NAIA National Tournament in 1993 and the NCAA Division II Men s Basketball Tournament in 1996, 1997, 003, and 006. Nibert is also the only coach in the history of the SAC to coach a squad to the Sweet 16 of the Division II Tournament. Even more impressive, Nibert has seen 51 out of his 51 seniors graduate from Presbyterian during his tenure. Nibert led PC to its first ever win at the NCAA Division I level on Dec. 1, 007 when the Blue Hose defeated Big South Conference foe Radford, 6-60, at the Templeton Center. Overall, PC finished its first NCAA Division I season with five victories. The Blue Hose won all five of their games at home to enter the campaign in the midst of a 1-game home winning streak, which places them tied for the 14th longest active home winning streak in all of NCAA Division I men s basketball. One year earlier in their final year in NCAA Division II in the season, the Blue Hose posted a 0-9 record to finish with two consecu- 5

6 tive 0-win seasons. PC concluded SAC regular season play in second with a 1-4 mark and advanced to the Food Lion SAC Men s Basketball Tournament semifinals where they fell to tournament champion and NCAA Division II Elite Eight participant Wingate. In the campaign, PC compiled a 5-10 overall record including a 10-4 ledger in the South Atlantic Conference, good for a tie at second place in the league. The Blue Hose advanced to the finals of the 006 Food Lion/SAC Tournament, which earned them an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II Southeast Regional Tournament, where they advanced to the semifinals. In the season, Nibert led the Blue Hose to an overall record and a tie for third place in the SAC regular season. In addition, the Blue Hose advanced to the semifinals of the 005 Food Lion SAC Tournament. Nibert led the Blue Hose to a program record-tying 7 wins against nine losses in the season. The team compiled a 9-5 mark in SAC play, good for a fourth-place finish. In the Food Lion SAC Tournament, PC upset #1 seed Carson-Newman College 69-5 in the semifinals before falling 71-6 to the #3 seed Lenoir-Rhyne College. The Blue Hose received an at-large bid to the NCAA Division II South Atlantic Regional and entered the postseason tournament as the No. 8 seed. In the opening round, PC upset #1 seed and No. 13-ranked Columbus State University, In the semifinals, PC knocked off the #5 seed Shaw University, 77-58, to advance to the Sweet 16. PC s Cinderella run through the NCAA Tournament ended at the hands of # seed Bowie State University, 67-53, in the region championship game. Nibert s squad posted a 0-7 overall record, which included the program s second SAC regular season title along with its second straight trip to the NCAA Division II national tournament. The Blue Hose received a first-round bye in the NCAA Tournament and finished the season ranked No. 15 in the country. His team won the program s first-ever SAC Tournament title and received an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. In 1993, Nibert led the Blue Hose team which captured the SAC regular season championship and won a school record 7 games to the NAIA National Tournament in Kansas City, Mo. The national tournament appearance was the first-ever for Presbyterian College. For his efforts, Nibert was named the Coach of the Year for the state of South Carolina, the South Atlantic Conference and NAIA District 6. Nibert, a 1979 graduate of Marietta College, began his coaching career at Rice University where he served as an assistant coach under Mike Schuler, who would later earn NBA Coach of the Year honors with the Portland Trailblazers. In 1981, Nibert moved with fellow Owl aide Butch Estes to Clinton, S.C., when Estes accepted Presbyterian s head coaching job. The Blue Hose would record a ledger over the next three seasons, including a pair of 0-win campaigns. Nibert then moved to Furman University as a part-time assistant coach under Paladin mentor Gene Davis. One year later, Estes took Davis spot at the helm of Furman s program and Nibert was shifted to the full-time assistant s post, a slot he would man until being named Presbyterian s 17th head basketball coach on April 6, While a student-athlete at Marietta, Nibert, a native of Grove City, Ohio, earned Most Improved Player honors during his junior season and was named the team s Most Valuable Player following his senior campaign. Nibert is married to the former Peggy Harling of Simpsonville, S.C., and the couple has two sons, Shaun and Van. Shaun graduated from PC three years ago, while Van just graduated.
