1 Presbyterian College Basketball Eligible For Big South Tournament And NCAA Postseason Play In GAME 24 Presbyterian College at VMI The Presbyterian College men s basketball team is coming off a victory over Charleston Southern. The Blue Hose led virtually wire-to-wire as the Bucs largest lead was 2-0 at the 19:45 mark of the game. Head coach Gregg Nibert s squad is looking to sweep the season series against the Keydets, having overcome a 17-point second-half deficit earlier this year for the overtime victory. It marked the second consecutive time that the Blue Hose had downed the Keydets, after winning a season ago in Clinton. PC is 0-1 in Lexington since making the move to Division I. A victory would mark the second time this season that PC has won back-to-back games. 4 SMITH SCORES A CAREER HIGH Rookie Travis Smith poured in a career-high 22 points in the victory over Charleston Southern Jan. 30. Smith connected on sixof-eight shots from the floor, including four-of-six from behind the arc. He continued his hot streak from the charity stripe, netting all six attempts. Up by three, 54-51, with just over two minutes to go, Smith hit four free throws in the remaining minutes of the contest as he scored the last points for either team. MAKING THE MOST OF THE MISCELLANEOUS STATS Presbyterian College made the most of one important miscellaneous statistic in the win over the Bucs. The Blue Hose forced 15 turnovers and converted them into 19 points. On the other hand, PC committed 18 turnovers, but held the Bucs to just nine points. ALL GOOD THINGS COME TO AN END Sophomore Chase Holmes played just five minutes in the win over CSU. He came off the bench and played well in limited action, notching two rebounds and having a block. Holmes did not score a point and didn t even take a shot. His streak of scoring at least two points in a game came to an end at 47 consecutive games. Holmes has been shut out now only twice in his career, with the first time coming in the win over San Jose State. In that game, Holmes 0-4 from the field in just eight minutes of playing time. WHAT TO WATCH FOR This weekend, PC will be looking for its first Big South Conference road win. The squad will also be vying for its first road win over the season. After losing their first nine games against mid-major and BCS conference schools, the Blue Hose have lost four games in conference on the road. Two of those losses have been in overtime (at Charleston Southern and at Gardner- Webb 64-57). COACH NIBErT s STORY The Coaches for Cancer game is a pivotal part of what the men s basketball program does at Presbyterian College. The event is held to increase awareness about cancer. Our men s team is lucky to be coached by Gregg Nibert, a cancer survivor, who was gracious enough to share his story with us. In 2006, Coach Nibert and his family wanted to share their love and home with a foster child. In order to make baby Marcus a part of their family, Nibert pass a physical examination. In November 2006, high results came back. After waiting a month and getting tested again, the results had escalated and he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. Gregg Nibert was fortunate to know another cancer survivor, Tim Corbin, who was a baseball coach at Presbyterian College. Mr. Corbin gave Coach Nibert all the necessary information, which allowed Nibert to get surgery in March at Vanderbilt, much earlier than the family expected. He had a great recovery, and in the end, baby Marcus was the blessing that may have saved his life. Coach Nibert received bad news again in the spring of 2009, as the cancer returned. He underwent radiation treatments through September and has had a wonderful recovery. Yet, because Nibert frequently gets tested, he is a strong advocate of early detection. The Coaches for Cancer game is important to Gregg Nibert because of his personal connection with the disease, and because he knows it is critical to make people aware of cancer. - The information was written by sports information intern Mary Gordon. SOLID OFF THE GLASS In the loss to Coastal Carolina, the Blue Hose recorded 32 rebounds, the same as the visiting Chanticleers. PC was able to snag one more offensive rebound (8-7). A solid all-around team effort marked just the fifth time this season the Blue Hose were not out-rebounded in a game. It also marked the first time that the overall rebounds were tied. GOING DOWN TO THE WIRE The Presbyterian College-Charleston Southern game could go down to the wire if the first meeting was any indication. The Blue Hose lost an overtime game as Chase Holmes poured in a team-high 26 points on Jan 2. Since moving to Division I, all three of the games have been decided by less than 10 points, with PC s victory last year being the widest margin of victory in the series. The LIST IS LONG When people glance at the Presbyterian College men s basketball team, they might just see the record and not look any closer. However, this year s team, in addition to being the youngest in the nation, has done numerous things that top the list of accomplishments since moving to Division I. The team has posted the highest three-point field goal percentage in its history (13-21 at UNC Asheville for.619), made more free throws in a game (25 at Charleston Southern) and has snared the most rebounds (53 vs. VMI) than any other team in the program s two-plus seasons in Division I. This year s squad also established school records against Division I opponents only for most points in a game (89 vs. VMI and at UNC Asheville). In the 14 statistical categories that PC has a top-10 list for, this year s team has at least one spot in all but one. TAKING CARE OF THE BALL Travis Smith led the way with a team-high seven assists at UNC Asheville. He committed just one turnover in the contest. He was a large reason that the Blue Hose dished out 23 assists while turning the ball over just nine times. GETTING OFFENSIVE In addition to the 89 points scored by PC tying the school s Division I record against Division I opponents, the Blue Hose were able to get scoring from everyone that played. In all, eight players checked into the game against the Bulldogs and all scored at least five points. Five players reached double figures and PC was led by Walt Allen s career-high 17 points. The Blue Hose drained 49.2 percent of their shots from the floor, including 13-of-21 from behind the arc.

5 Allen s Aim Redshirt-junior Walt Allen has continued to impress this season after redshirting a year ago. After establishing a careerhigh 15 points at Gardner-Webb on Jan. 21, Allen wasted no time in improving upon that total again. Against UNC Asheville, Allen came off the bench to net seven-of-12 shots from the floor, including three-of-six from behind the arc for a career-high 17 points. For good measure, he pulled down four rebounds, had an assist and a block in 28 minutes of action. IMPRESSIVE FRESHMEN Heading into the UNC Asheville game on Jan. 23, the Blue Hose were averaging 59.2 points per game as a team. In that Saturday game, head coach Gregg Nibert started five freshmen. The five, which were the only freshmen to see the court that day, combined to score 55 of the team s 89 points. The starters went a combined 20-of-41 from the floor. RYAN S DOING IT ROUTINELY Rookie Ryan Hargrave put together another solid performance this season, coming in the overtime loss at Gardner- Webb. Hargrave notched his first double-double of the season and his career in just 27 minutes of action. Hargrave tallied 11 points and 10 rebounds in the contest. He nearly recorded his first career double-double in the overtime win over VMI after finishing with 12 points and eight boards. WALT S CAREER NIGHT On multiple occasions, redshirt-junior Walt Allen has scored 13 points during his career. On Jan. 21, Allen poured in a careerhigh 15 points off the bench at Gardner-Webb recently. He also grabbed seven rebounds in 27 minutes of playing time. En route to his career high in points, Allen connected on six-of-eight shots from the field, including one-of-two from behind the arc. Allen played a near-perfect game as he did not commit a turnover in the contest. BETTER THAN THE RECORD SHOWS Despite the Presbyterian College men s basketball team is 1-7 in Big South Conference play, the squad is much better than the record indicates. In addition to being the youngest team in the nation, four of the seven losses have gone down to the wire, including two that the Blue Hose lost in overtime. In the conference opener, PC fell to High Point. The team followed it up with a four-point loss against league favorite Radford, PC then lost in overtime at Charleston Southern, The next overtime loss that the Blue Hose had was at Gardner- Webb. SHARING IS CARING Rookie Travis Smith had a solid all-around game against Gardner-Webb. In addition to netting five points, he recorded four steals. More importantly, Smith dished out a game-high seven assists. It is the second-most assists by a PC student-athlete THE LAST TIME... Well respected among fellow coaches, Nibert has been a member of the National Association of Basketball Coaches for 30 years and has also been a NABC Division II Basketball Congressman. Nibert has also established one of the largest basketball team camps in the country over the course of his time at PC. The Camp of Champions Team Camp is in its 19th year and has attracted thousands of kids to the Presbyterian College campus. Nibert, a 1979 graduate of Marietta College, began his coaching career at Rice University where he served as an assistant coach under Mike Schuler, who would later earn NBA Coach of the Year honors with the Portland Trailblazers. In 1981, Nibert moved with fellow Owl aide Butch Estes to Clinton, S.C., when Estes accepted Presbyterian s head coaching job. The Blue Hose would record a ledger over the next three seasons, including a pair of 20-win campaigns. Nibert then moved to Furman University as a part-time assistant coach under Paladin mentor Gene Davis. One year later, Estes took Davis spot at the helm of Furman s program and Nibert was shifted to the full-time assistant s post, a slot he would man until being named Presbyterian s 17th head basketball coach on April 26, While a student-athlete at Marietta, Nibert, a native of Grove City, Ohio, earned Most Improved Player honors during his junior season and was named the team s Most Valuable Player following his senior campaign. Nibert is married to the former Peggy Harling of Simpsonville, S.C., and the couple has two sons, Shaun (19) and Van (15). Shaun is a sophomore at PC, and Van is a sophomore at Clinton High School.
