1 VMI BASKETBALL KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES KEYDET BASKETBALL GAME NOTES VMI Opens Season On The Road at Kentucky & Virginia Keydets Test SEC, ACC Heavyweights To Begin Campaign Seniors Chavis and Travis Holmes will lead Duggar Baucom s potent offensive attack this season, as the Keydets look to lead the nation in scoring for the third-straight season. Chavis and Travis Holmes currently rank as the 11th and 19th scorers in VMI history, respectively, and together are the fourth-highest scoring set of twins in NCAA Division I history with 2,600 combined points. (Page 3 for more info) For the past two seasons, the Keydets have gained acclaim for leading the country in scoring (100.9 ppg in , 91.3 ppg in ). What you may not know, however, is that VMI has also led the nation in steals (14.8 spg in , 12.7 spg in ) and in three-pointers made per game (13.4 3pg in , pg in ) over the past two seasons, and also led the country in assists back in (20.6 apg). This season, the Keydets will be looking to lead the nation in scoring for the third-straight season, and if they do so, would get themselves on a very prestigious list. The only other two schools to do so were Furman from and Loyola Marymount from (Page 2 for more info) Last season, forward Reggie Williams earned First Team All-Big South honors while junior guard Chavis Holmes was named to the League s Second Team, as the Big South postseason awards were announced on Monday. That marked the first time that two Keydets have earned All-Conference accolades since the season, when Darryl Faulkner earned First Team honors and Jason Bell was named to the Second Team. Sophomore guard Adam Lonon was also named to the Big South s Academic All-Conference team. A VMI win against Kentucky would: Mark VMI s first win against an SEC opponent since knocking off Tennessee in the NCAA Eastern Regionals in Charlotte on March 13, It would also be VMI s first win against Kentucky since the campaign, when VMI won a contest. The Keydets are 2-5 all-time against the Wildcats, having last played at Rupp Arena on Dec. 5, 2001, losing UK has won each of the past five meetings. Give VMI its first win away from Lexington to begin a season since defeating Roanoke at the UVA Tipoff in Charlottesville on Nov. 25, It would be VMI s first season-opening win on an opponent s court since defeating Hampden- Sydney on Dec. 8, Signify Duggar Baucom s first season-opening win since taking over the Runnin Roos. The Keydets have previously lost openers to Army (53-49, ), Ohio State (107-69, ) and Northern Colorado (104-97, ). A VMI win against Virginia would: Mark VMI s first win against an ACC opponent since knocking off Virginia Tech at VMI s Cameron Hall on Dec. 4, It would also be VMI s first win against Virginia since Dec. 9, 1964, when VMI won a contest. The Keydets are all-time against the Cavaliers, having last played against the Cavaliers on Dec. 5, Virginia has won each of the past 23 meetings. The Keydets open with big conference heavyweights Kentucky (Nov.14) and Virginia (Nov. 16) before returning home to play its first two home games at Cameron Hall next week with Maryland Bible on Tuesday (Nov. 18) and Stevenson (Nov. 20). The Keydets will play five of the first eight games on the road. Homecoming For Sparks: VMI freshman forward Michael Sparks will begin his collegiate basketball career where he ended his high school career - in Lexington, Kentucky. Sparks will take the floor when the Keydets face off against Kentucky in Rupp Arena Friday night and he'll have plenty of family and friends in the stands after playing scholastically at Tates Creek High School in Lexington, Ky. Sparks averaged 19.1 points and 8.5 rebounds his senior year and became the school's all-time leading scorer surpassing new South Carolina head coach Darrin Horn. Sparks was also selected to play in the prestigious Kentucky-Indiana All-Star game last spring. He shot 80% from the free throw line last year as a senior. Sparks is one of four freshman signees on the VMI squad. VMI last played in the Bluegrass State on Dec. 23, 2003, losing a decision at Louisville. The Brummage Connection: VMI and Kentucky both have long and stories basketball histories that rarely crossed paths, but no where do they share a more common past than in the early 20th century. In the season, new head coach Alpha Brummage took over the VMI program as head coach in only the fourth year as head coach. Brummage guided the Keydets for three years posting two winning seasons and a.500 season and finished with a mark. Following the season, Brummage moved to Kentucky where he became the head coach of its basketball program. High-Scoring Keydets Join Elite List: VMI topped the nation in scoring for the second straight year in with a 91.3 points per game average, becoming just the 11th team on record in NCAA history to lead the country in scoring in back-to-back years. If the Keydets can lead the nation in scoring once again this year, they would be just the third program to lead in three consecutive years and first since Loyola Marymount from Below is a list of schools that have led the nation in scoring in consecutive years Rhode Island Furman Loyola (Ill.) Jacksonville Oral Roberts UNLV Loyola Marymount Southern Duke Arizona VMI Twin Power: Senior twin guards Chavis and Travis Holmes have continued a tradition of high-powered scoring twins to suit up

3 for VMI. The Keydets have two of the top four twin brother career scoring combos in NCAA history. Chavis and Travis are following in the footsteps of Ramon and Damon Williams who played for VMI between and scored 3,252 points to rank second behind Johnny and Eddie O'Brien who played for Seattle University from and scored 3,263 points. Chavis and Travis have scored exactly 2,600 points combined over their first three years of college to rank fourth on the NCAA twin brother scoring list, and trail Horace and Harvey Grant of Clemson/Oklahoma who are third with 3,231 points. Topping The Big South Charts: VMI senior Chavis Holmes enters the campaign as the Big South Conference's leading active scorer with 1,384 points which is tied for 32nd on the all-time BSC scoring list. Entering the season, Holmes needs 327 points from entering the league's Top 10. Twin brother Travis Holmes has also scored 1,216 points and is one of three active BSC players with over 1,000 career points. Chavis and Travis rank 11th and 19th respectively on the VMI career scoring list. Board Scores: Two VMI players enter the season with chances to top the 500-rebound mark for their careers. Senior Travis Holmes is 76 rebounds away from 500 rebounds, and would become the 35th player in Big South Conference history with 1,00 points and 500 rebounds. Senior Willie Bell has 309 career boards and could also top the 500- mark with a big year. Remembering Reggie: VMI will enter the without its scoring leader of the past four years. Replacing forward Reggie Williams will not be an easy task. Williams in became the all-time leading scorer in VMI, Big South Conference, and State Division I history with 2,556 points and received several post-season accolades including first team All-Big South, first team All-State (Richmond Times-Dispatch and VASID), and Collegehoops.net second team All-America midmajor. Williams was also named to the National Association Basketball Coach District 4 first team. Williams averaged 27.8 points in and led NCAA Division I in scoring for the second straight season. He became only the ninth player in NCAA history to lead the nation in multiple years. Williams is currently playing professionally in Dijon, France. Preseason Aches: The Keydets hope to get three players who have sidelined with injuries for portions of the preseason practice back to full strength as the first week of the season begins. Junior point guard Adam Lonon has been sidelined most of preseason practice with a hamstring pull and is questionable for the first week of the season. Junior forward Carl Josey has resumed practice after dealing with an ankle sprain, and freshman forward Michael Sparks is ready to go after missing VMI's first preseason scrimmage with a concussion. VMI Basketball Signs Two In Early Period: VMI head basketball coach Duggar Baucom has announced the signings of Joe Carr and Nick Gore to National Letters-of-Intent for the early signing period which began Wednesday. Carr is a 6-2, 195 guard from The Woodlands (Tex.) Christian Academy. Gore, a 6-7 forward who graduated from Waynesboro (Va.) High School last spring, is currently attending The Hill School in Pottstown, Pa. Carr averaged 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 5 assists per game as a junior last year and led TWCA to a 27-2 mark and its first ever state championship in basketball. He was named District Player of the Year in each of the past two seasons and also earned all-state honors in the same two years. "Joe Carr is a great fit for our program, we are really excited that he has chose to attend VMI," said Baucom. "Joe is a coach on the floor. He combines great size with innate leadership ability. He is the type of player that makes everyone around him better." Gore averaged 16 points and 10 rebounds last year at Waynesboro High and can play both the small and power forward positions. He was named All-District as Waynesboro advanced to the 3rd round of the state playoffs last year. "We are very excited that Nick has decided to attend VMI," said Baucom. "He is a smart, versatile player who brings a great skill set to our program. Nick can really shoot the ball, put it on the floor and go by bigger players, and he also plays very, very hard." Sizing up the recruiting process so far, Baucom stated, "I would like to thank my hard working staff and players for bringing in two such quality cadet-athletes during the early signing period. It is truly a combined effort by all parties to attract this kind of talent to VMI." Keydets Picked Seventh In Big South Poll: VMI s Baucom Rewarded With Contract Extension: Just before the season, VMI head coach Duggar Baucom received a contract extension through the season, Athletic Director Donny White announced. Baucom, who has injected a brand of fastpaced, high-scoring hoops that has brought the Keydets success and acclaim on and off the court, is entering his fourth season as VMI head coach since taking over the program in April, Over the past two seasons, Baucom has led VMI to the NCAA scoring title, a feat accomplished most recently by Arizona in and Under Baucom, the Keydets have also experienced their most prolific two-year winning Movin Up The Charts VMI Career Scoring 10. I am extremely pleased with Coach Duggar Baucom s work at VMI, said White. He has built a very competitive program for us and I am confident that our basketball program will continue to excel under his leadership Since transitioning to the up-tempo, high-flying, system, the VMI record books have undergone a major facelift as 43 team, individual and facility records have been rewritten in the Baucom era. I am very excited to have received a contract extension, said Baucom. I owe a lot of appreciation to my players and my staff, all who have worked extremely hard to help build this program. I am also grateful to Coach White and VMI for allowing me the opportunity to work with great young men day in and day out. In , VMI set new NCAA season marks in three-pointers, both made and attempted (442 of 1383), 3-pointers made per game(13.4) assists per game, and steals (490). VMI was also declared the NCAA stat champion in four team categories and two individual categories. The Keydets ranked first in Division I in scoring offense (100.9 PPG), three-point field goals (13.4) made per game, assists per game (14.8) and steals per game (13.4). The Keydets advanced to the 2007 Big South Championship game before falling to eventual champion Winthrop. Back-to-Back Successes: After winning only seven games in , the Keydets doubled that total by winning 14 in , and repeated that mark a season ago. The 28 wins over the past two seasons are the most by a Keydet team since the campaigns. The consecutive 14-win seasons are the first for the program since winning 26 in and 21 in Twins Scoring Leaders NCAA Division I Career 1. Johnny & Eddie O Brien ,263 pts.
