4 Dear Friends and Ruggers, On behalf of the Providence Rugby Club, I would like to welcome you to the 33rd annual Beast of the East Collegiate Rugby Tournament - the largest collegiate rugby tournament in the world. This would not be possible without the support of you and your team. Collegiate rugby proves to continue as one of the fastest growing sports in America. As the number of participants grows, so does the level of skill and enthusiasm. It s an exciting time to be part of the rugby community and the Providence Rugby Club is proud to continue to host a tournament that showcases the talent and dedication that you all possess. 16 Tournament Rules & Information I. GAMES Saturday s games will be 20-minute halves with a 5-minute halftime. Sunday s games will be 25-minute halves with a 5-minute halftime. Each team is guaranteed two matches. In the event of a forfeiture, we cannot guarantee a second match. Brackets with quarterfinal matches will be seeded and based upon best record followed by greatest point differential. If necessary, ties will be broken by greatest number of trys or kickoff. All matches will kick off at the time and place they are scheduled, or at the completion of the previous match, whichever is earlier. Teams are expected to be at the field of the match 10 min. before scheduled kick off for referee meetings. Teams that are not ready to play at their appointed time and place will forfeit the match by a 7-0 score (converted try). It is the responsibility of the team captain to be aware of the time and place his/her team s matches on both days. An official schedule will be posted at the Main Tent & on the website. All teams must provide their own competent touch judge. All teams should have matching uniforms and full rugby dress. An alternate uniform is required if you have registered 2 sides. It only needs to be worn if the two sides play. Penalties: Sin Bin (Yellow Card) lengths will be 5 minutes for games with 20-minute halves and 7 minutes for games with 25 min halves. Any player sent off for misconduct (Red Card) will be disqualified from further competition in the tournament. Substitutions: Seven substitutes per game, per team will be allowed. In the event of a front row substitution, the sub MUST be a qualified front row sub. Any player removed and substituted may take no further part in that game, but may play in subsequent matches. Injuries: Any player who retires from a match due to a head injury must be examined by the medical staff before playing in subsequent matches. Concussed players cannot play for the remainder of the tournament. II. TIE BREAKERS Saturday: In the event of a tie, the games will be decided by: Greatest number of converted trys, or Whoever scored first 16

17 Tournament Rules & Information In the event of a scoreless tie, a kickoff * will be held. Round Robin ties to determine quarter finalists are broken by: Greatest point differential Greatest number of trys, or Kickoff Sunday: In the event of a tie, the games will be decided by (Excluding Sunday quarterfinal rounds which follow Saturday tie breakers): Two 5 minute sudden death periods will be played Kickoff* *Three kickers from each team alternate kicking for goal at same distance/ location.) Best of three starting at center location (if still tied, move left for three, then right for three). III. SPORTSMANSHIP Profanity or vulgarity will not be tolerated as a part of pre-game chants or line-out calls. Abusiveness towards a referee or tournament official may result in a team being disqualified from the tournament and/or future tournaments. IV. MISCELLANEOUS Absolutely NO ALCOHOL will be allowed anywhere on tournament grounds. No open flames, including grills of any kind are permitted at the sports complex. Dogs are allowed on a leash (they are not however allowed on the touranment busses). Porta-Johns have been provided at all fields. Please help us keep them clean. Weather: In the event of a severe weather complication, PRFC will not be held liable for maintaining match schedules. V. EXPULSION Any student athlete caught disobeying the alcohol stipulations of this tournament, vandalizing or defacing public or private property or found to have been arrested in any establishment for any reason during the Beast of the East weekend will be immediately reported to the appropriate member of their institution and will cause an immediate ban, from the Beast of the East, for the period of two years or until such time as that individual graduates, whichever is longer. All Rules are subject to change per the tournament director s discretion. Any matters not covered by the laws of the game, or by a referee s decisions, will be resolved by the Tournament Director and Head Referee whose decision will be final. 17

Tournament Location: Gardner Seveny Sports Complex, 715 East Main Road, Portsmouth RI Parking Locations: Sachuest Beach, 600 Sachuest Point Rd, Middletown, RI ANYONE (players, coaches, spectators) may park at Sachuest (2nd) Beach on the WEST side of the lot. Parking is free for players. Parking for spectators will be $5/car for the weekend. Parking pass must be displayed on the dash of your vehicle. Pennfield School, 110 Sandy Point Ave, Portsmouth, RI - SPECTATORS ONLY Approximately 60 spots are available on a first come, first serve basis. Once you leave, your space will not be held. There is a walkway from the school to the fields. Please check the sign on East Main Rd. before you turn to see if the lot is full. Parking is $20/day. On-Site Parking The only parking permitted at the fields is for authorized personnel or those with a handicapped sticker. All others will be towed at the owner s expense. 18
