1 Men s Tennis Team Tryout Program/Procedure Rev. 8/4/2017 Step 1 Ranking Returning Players The Coaches will rank all the returning players from where they were playing the year before. There is some coach s discretion in this ordering process but that is understood and acceptable. Each player will have ample opportunity to prove themselves and move up during pool play. Step 2 Skills First day of tryouts/practice For incoming freshmen and new players to the program Graded on #of shots hit in the court and some strokes on form...appx 100 points Points tabulated for each player (these will be used for coaching as well) on a worksheet Players will be ranked from 1 to X. The players will be evaluated on where they will go into the existing line-up from last year the highest a new player can be placed is 13 th.that would be top position in the 3rd pool. (assuming 6 in each pool) Coaches discretion is used to determine exactly where each player will be placed Example -- A strong new player that starts at position 19 can move to position 7 after 4 rounds if winning each pool. They will be able to challenge up from there if they have not played players ahead of them. Step 3 Pool Play Pools of 6 players are created based on order established after Step 2 If there are 36 players, there will be 6 pools If there are more than 36 by 1 or 2 players, the last pool will be larger. If there are 39 players a 7 th pool will be added with 3 players. Each match is a 10 point tie-breaker first player to 10 points wins. At 9-all the next point wins; the player returning serve can choose add or deuce side. Coaches and managers are available to assist with rules if player is newer to the game Each player will play all the other players in their pool There will be at least 4 rounds of pool play coaches will decide after play has ended on Tuesday, if a 5 round will be added. Coaches can substitute playing sets vs tie breakers. Depending upon number of players trying out, pools will be between 4-6 players How is pool play run? Let s assume there are 6 pools with 6 players in each. Pool names are Pool 1 6. (Again, there could be fewer players in each pool and fewer pools depending on total numbers coaches discretion) Each player will play the other players in his pool for a total of 5 matches. Both players scores will be recorded with the Team Manager. When that pool has completed its 15 matches, each player s record will be documented and points will be added up. Rankings within the pool are first based on wins-losses

2 and if there is a tie, the tie is broken by that player that had more total points. If there is still a tie, it comes down to who won between those players that are tied. The top 3 players move into the pool ahead of them while the bottom 3 players will be joined by the 3 in the pool right below. This will form the second round of pool play. In round 2 there will be only 5 pools as 6 players have byes. The top 3 in pool 1, will skip (earning a bye) round two of pool play. They will resume in round 3 of pool play being joined by the top 3 in pool 1, round 2. Once into round 4 of pool play, the top 3 players will start playing sets. This set is regular scoring, 7 point tie-breaker at 5-all in games. These matches could be played at PRHS, MHCC, Flying Horse or the Palmer Lake courts. To earn a varsity singles position, the player must be ahead of the next position by a set. Winning 2 tiebreakers counts as a set. The bottom 3 in the lowest pool will have a bye into round #3 of pool play. They will join the bottom of the pool above them after the second round and play a 3 rd round. The same bye scenario will also happen with the lowest pool after round 3. If there is court space available we will have the bye players play practice matches against each other in the bye round. If coaches cap the rounds at 4 and do sets in the 4 th round, then the top 3 and bottom 3 will play sets among themselves so they are participating in the 4 th round. Step 4 Key position cross-over matches; final line-up determination matches (as necessary) After the conclusion of round 4 (or round 5 if we added that round), the coaches will look closely at the ranking of players and determine that every player has beaten the player just below in the ladder in key areas on the ladder. That player could be ahead by virtue of win-loss record and/or points. If there is a scenario where the player ahead has not directly defeated the player just below, then they will play another tie breaker to determine final spots. If there is not time enough to play off of those we will analyze to determine if that player has a chance to move up into another team or into a varsity singles position and only play those matches. For example, here is how 3 players finished in this order: Player C Player B Player A Player A is behind player B as they are tied 2-2 in tie breakers, but player A lost to player C 3-1 in tiebreakers. In this scenario A does not need to play B because A cannot move past Player C. The only exception to that scenario would be if this example was hovering around the 3-4 th position (singles potential), around the 10-12th position (varsity potential) or around the position (V2 potential). If a match is necessary than another 10 point tie-breaker is played. The winner takes the higher place on the ladder. Also, there is a chance that these 2 players have played each other twice and if there is a

3 split, then they will play a final 10 point tie-breaker to determine the standing. If there are several of these situations, then it may warrant another round of pool play. This is at the coach s discretion. If we run out of time due to high numbers, weather, etc, then, at the coach s discretion, we will use the pool play results only and not look at the head to head in the final standings. This would incorporate the pool by pool rules; win/loss, points and then head to head. How a player ends up after 4 rounds of pool play is how we finish. Again, this would be used only if we have serious weather issues. Coaches will let the players know ahead of time if this is the case. Determining 3 key areas in the line-up Need a clear differentiation between the following positions: #3 and #4 (Varsity singles to the top position in varsity doubles) On the top end of the ladder, position 3 needs to have defeated position 4 by being ahead 2-1 or 2-0 in sets. Position 1 and 2 will play each other 2 out of 3 sets. If weather and time are an issue, coaches have discretion to play just 1 set or use the results of the pool play (sets) to determine 1 and 2 positions. These 2 out of 3 set matches will determine the singles position order. However, if position 4 wins against position 3 they will then play position 2. If they defeat position 2, they will then play for the top spot. At the end of the day, the 3 singles players will have beaten the player below them in a 2 out of 3 set match. (or clearly won in the pool play if we run out of time) Regardless of time and weather, the player in the # 3 spot will have beaten the #4 player in a 2 out of 3 set match. The #4 player only has to be ahead of the #5 player through the pool play rules. #11 and #12 (Bottom varsity to the top position of V2) The 11th placed player needs to have either a full set advantage over the 12 th player or a clear 3 out of 5 tie breaker advantage. If the 11th ranked player wins, then they are done playing each other. If the 12th position player wins then they switch positions. As long as the 13 th player has lost to the new 12 th position player then it is over in this section. If 13 th has not played both the 12 th and 13 th then they play 1 tie breaker. If he wins, then he plays 11 a full set or 3 out of 5 tie breakers. #22 and #23 (Bottom V2 to the top of JV) The 22nd placed player needs to have either a full set advantage over the 23rd player or a clear 2 out of 3 tie breaker advantage. If the 22nd ranked player wins, then it is over. If the 23rd position player wins then they switch positions. If the next player in line has not played the 23 rd and 22 nd position players then they get to play. If they have and lost, then it is over in this section. Note: It is possible, and has happened, that a player that ends up in lower pools could end up winning the each pool. Once pool play has ended then they can keep challenging all the way into the singles positions. This will only happen if they start low and have not played the other players above them. These matches would be 10 point tie breakers and the player must keep winning. If they move into position to challenge singles, they would need to play the singles players 2 out of 3 sets (or 1 set depending on

4 time/weather) as outlined above. If time is running out the coaches can declare that that person can challenge through the higher pools moving 2 spots at a time. Once they lose, they will be in that spot. Once to the 4 th spot they will play each player until losing as outlined above. Step 5 -- FINAL LINE-UP By the end of the week of tryouts, the goal is to have the Varsity (V), V2 (JV) and JV (C) teams announced. The singles players will also be in their correct positions. The doubles teams for each of the teams will be determined the following week. Due to the higher number of participants over the last 2 seasons, we may have a competitive portion of the JV team and a developmental portion. The developmental is designed for players that are new or fairly new to the sport and the focus is learning skills, scoring, and some strategy for both doubles and singles. The competitive JV group will play more matches and a subset of that competitive JV group may participate in some V2 matches and/or tournaments. For Varsity, players that finish in the 4-11 spots will be doubles players. The coaches will determine the doubles partners and then the doubles teams will play each other for determining their order in the lineup. Coaches can pair any 4-11 players together. Coaches look for complimentary skills, compatibility, consistency, and personality when putting players together. Once the doubles teams are established the teams will play each other in challenge matches for the final positions. Coaches have the discretion to have as many double s challenge matches as they feel is necessary. The goal is to have the line-up set by the Friday in the second week of tryouts/practice. This includes the doubles teams. Coaches have the right to make player adjustments to doubles teams. For example, if two players have strong groundstrokes but weak volleys, they will struggle as a team. Each team needs at least 1 person that can volley. Also, it is important that the two players can get along with each other. Size is another factor. Two shorter players can be a disadvantage. Input from the players is accepted but final decisions lie with the Coaching staff. Top 11 are varsity; next 11 are the V2; and remaining players are on the JV. This could be 12 if numbers support and 12 th on each team. JV (C) will have a competitive group and a developmental group. The 12 th player will practice and travel with the varsity team. We will guarantee that they play at least 5 matches at the varsity level either through substituting for varsity players or playing on the V2 team. When they attend a varsity match and not play they will assist the coach with scouting matches. To earn a Varsity Letter The Varsity team consists of 11 players. The V2 (JV) team consists of 11 players. The varsity team may carry 1 additional player that will practice with them, be the first subs when necessary, and travel with the team. This person might also swing to the JV/V2 competitive team. This is at the coach s discretion. It is possible for a JV player to letter. To earn that letter a player must play in 5 Varsity or V2 matches.

5 Any questions or concerns before, during and after the tryouts must be raised by the player to the coaches, directly. Coaches expect players to keep their parents informed of the tryout system and how they are doing. See an example of pool play in the following 2 pages. PRHS and Palmer Lake (10 min group warmup) Tuesday 9:00-11:00am Round 2 continued. Pools 4 and 5 play (bottom 3 have a bye). PRHS courts only (20 min group warmup) 11:30-1:30pm Round 3 begins. Pools 1, 2 and 3 play. PRHS and Palmer Lake (20 min group warmup) 2:00-4:00pm Round 3 continued. Pools 4, 5, and 6 play. PRHS and Palmer Lake (10 min group warmup) 4:00pm 6:00pm Top 3 bye players begin playing sets. PRHS only. Schedule ahead of time so players know appx what time they play. 4:00 4:30 Coaches meet Now completed 3 rounds of pool play. (Top 3 players have completed part of round #5) Coaches review and assess progress, determine if we can get 5 rounds of pool play in before Friday. The top 3 need to be playing sets anyways even if we stop at 4 pools. Wednesday 3:00 5:00pm Begin round 3. Pools 1, 2 & 3 play. PRHS and Palmer Lake (10 min group warm-up) 5:00 7:00pm Top 3 from 1 will join 3 in Pool 1 and continue playing sets At Palmer Lake 5:00 7:00pm Continue round 3. Pools 4 & 5 play. PRHS only (10 min group warm-up)

7 After Wed, done with round 4 & in the middle of round 5 for Pool 1 which are the singles challenge matches. Thursday If decision is made to have a 5 th round, it will be played in a similar fashion to the Wed schedule. Friday/Saturday Used for the Step 4 outlined in the detail above. If weather or court restrictions have been a factor during the first part of the week, then these days will be used to catch up and complete the first 4 rounds of pool play and then move into Step 4.
