6 MEDIA SUPPLEMENT HEAD COACH KAREN BAREFOOT Record: Overall: /13 seasons At ODU: First Season When you think Karen Barefoot, her name is synonymous with turning around programs and winning. In just 13 years as a head coach, Barefoot has complied 10 winning seasons and won two National Coach of the Year awards. She is a proven winner that has made history in building programs, winning championships and producing success in the classroom. A new era in women s basketball was ushered in when Barefoot, a former Lady Monarch assistant from , was hired as head coach on June 8, Barefoot joined the ODU family after a three-year stint at Elon University. While there, Barefoot took over a team and led the Phoenix to their first ever Division I postseason appearance in Barefoot, who hails from Newport News, Va. (Menchville High School), has a career head coaching record of , resulting in 10 winning seasons. Aside from Elon, Barefoot has also held the head coaching position at Division II Lenoir Rhyne College and at the Apprentice School. Barefoot helped Elon reach new heights in , as the Phoenix finished the season with a record - the program's best season at the Division I level and only the fifth team in program history to reach the 20-win plateau. The Phoenix's 11 home victories marked the most home wins in a single season in the Division I era, while the team's postseason appearance in the Women's Basketball Invitational was the first since joining Division I. Elon recorded its 20th win of the season in the WBI after a drumming of USC Upstate in the first round. Barefoot also led Elon to 12 victories in SoCon play, doubling last year's total and tying the squad for the most SoCon wins in a season. Prior to coming to Elon, Barefoot was an assistant coach at, where the team compiled a record and was a perennial top- 25 program. In , ODU advanced to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament, defeating 12th-seeded Liberty University and fourth-seeded Virginia before falling to top-seeded Connecticut, completing a 31-5 record for the campaign. Along with its 17th consecutive Colonial Athletic Association crown, ODU earned a ranking as high as 11th in the nation. Barefoot originally came to after serving as the head coach at Division II Lenoir-Rhyne from While at the NCAA Division II school, Barefoot captured the first South Atlantic Conference regular season title in school history in en route to claiming league Coach of the Year honors. Under her leadership, the team also grabbed the first SAC tournament championship in school history in That year, the team finished the season ranked eighth in the region following its first-ever trip to the NCAA Division II National Tournament. In her first year at Lenoir-Rhyne, she led the program to its best record in 15 years, going Barefoot coached Lenoir-Rhyne's first NCAA First Team All-American, South Atlantic Player of the Year and SAC Tournament Most Valuable Player. Additionally, under her guidance the Bears had four student-athletes earn All-SAC honors and 13 student-athletes named to the SAC Commissioner's honor roll. Prior to her stint at Lenior-Rhyne, Barefoot spent six winning seasons at the Apprentice School after helping to initiate and develop the first-ever female athletic program in the 75-year history of the school. A two-time NSCAA National Coach of the Year (1999 & 2001), she compiled a mark and captured the 2001 NSCAA National Championship. Under Barefoot, the Builders had seven NSCAA All-Americans and four Academic All-Americans. As a former student-athlete at Christopher Newport, in nearby Newport News, Barefoot still holds the recognition of being the first player in NCAA history, male or female, to score over 2,000 points and accumulate 1,000 assists during her career. Barefoot was the only player to achieve this height until Gonzaga's Courtney Vandersloot accomplished the feat on March 21, For four consecutive seasons, Barefoot led the nation in assists and is CNU's all-time leader in assists and steals, while ranking second in scoring. A three-time Kodak/WBCA All-American, she has been inducted into the CNU Athletic Hall of Fame and had her college jersey (No. 10) retired. Barefoot was just recently honored during CNU s 50th anniversary celebration as one of the school s Top 50 Most Distinguished Alumni. In 2006 she was named to USA South's 25th Anniversary Team and in 2010 she was inducted into their Hall of Fame. Barefoot graduated from Christopher Newport with a degree in recreation and leisure studies in 1995.

7 ODU WOMEN S BASKETBALL ASSISTANT COACH AMAKA AGUGUA Experience: First Season at ODU Alma Mater: Hofstra 05 Amaka 'Mox' Agugua (Uh-mah-kuh Uh-goo-gwa) was named 's assistant coach and recruiting coordinator on June 20, Agugua spent the last two seasons as the assistant coach and recruiting coordinator with the Indiana women's basketball program. Prior to her time at Indiana, Agugua spent three seasons at Virginia Commonwealth, one as a graduate assistant and two as an assistant coach. At VCU, she was responsible for working with the Rams' post players, as well as assisting with VCU's recruiting efforts. Agugua was instrumental in guiding VCU to its first-ever appearance in the NCAA Tournament in , and develop two WNBA draft picks in Krystal Vaughn (2008) and Quanitra Hollingsworth (2009). Agugua also has CAA ties as a player at Hofstra University. As a 5'11 forward for the Pride, Agugua earned a reputation around the league as an outstanding shooter and solid rebounder and had the numbers to back it up. A three-year captain, Agugua owns Hofstra's career mark for field goal shooting, hitting at a.551 (420-of-762) clip. Additionally, she holds the school's top three single-season marks for field goal accuracy, including the Pride all-time record of.561 in She appeared in 95 games for Hofstra, including 82 starts, and averaged 10.2 points and 6.0 rebounds per contest. She is 12th in program history with 568 rebounds and was just 30 points shy of joining the 1,000 point club, despite missing all of the season and most of due to injury. In , she served as captain for a Pride team that recorded a record and made the school's first-ever postseason appearance, a trip to the WNIT. Agugua averaged 10.2 points, 5.6 rebounds and nearly a steal a game to bolster the Pride attack. Agugua was a second team All-CAA selection in when she booked 12.0 points and 6.5 rebounds per game and shot.557. She was also a Preseason All-CAA First Team selection, but missed the year with an injury. In she averaged 11.3 points and a career-best 7.0 rebounds. A native of Herndon, Va., Agugua starred at Oakton High School for coach Fred Priester. Her senior season she was an All-Met and All-Virginia selection, as well as a Virginia Gatorade Player of the Year finalist. She was also MVP of the Northern Region and took her team to the state championship game her senior year season. Additionally, Agugua participated in the Northern Region and Virginia State All-Star games. Agugua earned her bachelor's degree in business management from Hofstra in 2005 and received her master's degree in sport leadership and administration through VCU's SportsCenter in She is originally from Nigeria.

8 MEDIA SUPPLEMENT ASSISTANT COACH ADRIENNE GOODSON Experience: First Season at ODU Alma Mater: 89 Adrienne Goodson joined the Lady Monarch coaching staff on June 25, The former Lady Monarch, WNBA All-Star, Kodak District All-American, and a member of the 1985 NCAA National Championship women's basketball team is head coach Karen Barefoot's second hire since taking over the program. During her career at, Goodson was a two-time Second Team All-Sun Belt performer and was also on the Sun-Belt All-Tournament squad in As a junior in 1987, she was named the Sun Belt Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player and as a senior in 1988, she was named the Sun Belt Player of the Year. As a senior in 1988, Goodson was named Player of the Year in the Sun Belt Conference and in the State of Virginia. In 1987, she was named the Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player. During her career at, Goodson was a two-time second team All-Sun Belt performer in 1986 and 1987, and was also on the Sun-Belt All-Tournament squad in During her freshman season, Goodson was a member of the 1985 NCAA National Championship squad. She averaged 9.5 points per game as she scored 323 points, which is the seventh most points scored in Lady Monarch history for a freshman. In the NCAA title game, Goodson scored nine points and hauled in six rebounds to help the Lady Monarchs defeat Georgia, in Austin, Texas as rolled to a 31-3 record. With Goodson on the floor, the Lady Monarchs won the Sun Belt Conference title in 1985 and in 1987 and helped lead to three NCAA tournaments. Goodson closed out her career with 1,574 career points and 863 career rebounds. She ranks 11th all-time in scoring. She was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame in 1999 and was a part of the Colonial Athletic Association Legends Class of Following her graduation in 1989 with a degree in marketing education, Goodson captained the 1993 USA National Basketball team and played professionally in Brazil before returning to the states to become a two-time All-Star in the American Basketball League for the Richmond/Philadelphia Rage. During her time in the ABL she averaged 17.5 points and 7.9 rebounds and was one of only five players (Teresa Edwards, Carolyn Jones-Young, Dawn Staley, and Natalie Williams) twice named to an All-ABL Team. She ranks fourth with 1,658 career ABL points scored and is second only to Williams in ABL career offensive rebounds with 293. Goodson was selected in the third round (27th overall) in the 1999 WNBA consolidation draft and in her nine-year WNBA career played with the Utah Starzz ( ), San Antonio Silver Stars ( ), Houston Comets (2005), and finished her career with the Charlotte Sting (2005). In 2002, she was selected to the WNBA All-Star Team. During her career in the WNBA, Goodson totaled 2,705 points and 1,126 rebounds averaging 12.2 points and 5.1 rebounds per game. Active in the community and a guest speaker to numerous groups and schools across the country, Goodson received the 2003 WNBA Off-Season Community Assist Award and for six seasons was a spokesperson for the WNBA's Mind, Body, and Spirit and Read to Achieve programs. In 2003, Goodson was invited by then First Lady Laura Bush to Third Annual National Book Festival organized by the Library of Congress. She also served as an Ambassador in the Land O Lakes Hoops 4 Africa program in This will be Goodson's second stint as a coach with the Lady Monarch women's basketball program. She served as an assistant during the season, which included monitoring and planning workouts for the Lady Monarch guards. Goodson also served as a conditioning coach to the program, implementing and facilitating the Lady Monarchs' pre-season program.

9 ODU WOMEN S BASKETBALL ASSISTANT COACH TOM MCCONNELL Experience: First Season at ODU Alma Mater: Park Point College 84 Tom McConnell, a 20-year veteran of the collegiate and high school coaching ranks, joined the women's basketball staff on August 3, 2011 after spending four years at the University of Colorado. At he will work closely with Barefoot in game planning and player development, while also serving as the academic liaison and be involved heavily with camps. McConnell spent seven seasons as the head men's basketball coach at St. Francis ( ), where he is tied for second on the school's all-time list for wins with 85. His most successful season came in when he directed the Red Flash to a mark for their first winning campaign in seven years. His effort still stands today as the most wins in one season at St. Francis since McConnell's head coaching appointment at St. Francis was his second tour of duty with the school, as he was an assistant coach in Between stints at St. Francis, McConnell spent one season as an assistant at Wake Forest University ( ), three years at Marquette University ( ) and three seasons at the University of Dayton ( ). In his first season at Dayton, he helped the Flyers to a record, the Midwestern Collegiate Conference title and a spot in the NCAA Tournament. The 12th seeded Flyers upset the fifth seed University of Illinois in the first round and fell to eventual Final Four participant University of Arkansas in the second round, After leaving his position of head men's basketball coach at St. Francis (Pa.) University following the season, McConnell became the Director of Youth and Campus Ministry for the Diocese of Altoona-Johnstown (Pa.). He returned to coaching in 2004, while keeping his position with the Diocese, serving two seasons as head boy's basketball coach at Bishop Guilfoyle High School in Altoona. In 2006, his final season, he guided the Marauders to an overall record of and an 11-3 mark in Mountain Athletic Conference action. McConnell returned to the collegiate coaching ranks at Colorado in 2006 after a seven-year hiatus. During his tenure at CU, the Buffs advanced to the 2008 WNIT Final Four, the school's first ever postseason semifinal. Colorado also garnered the school's first national ranking in four seasons, reaching No. 23 in the AP poll. Prior to joining the collegiate ranks full time, he served as boy's head junior varsity coach and assistant varsity coach at Canon-McMillan High School in Canonsburg, Pa., and as a volunteer assistant men's coach at the University of Pittsburgh in McConnell was the head coach for the Pittsburgh Women's AAU Basketball Team that won the 1984 national championship and featured his sister Suzie McConnell Serio, an All-American at Penn State, a two-time United States Olympian, former head coach of the Minnesota Lynx of the WNBA and current head women's coach at Duquesne. He was the director of the Steal City Basketball Day Camp from and has served as the director of The Word and the Rock Basketball Camp since 1999 and Camp Zacchaeus since McConnell earned his bachelor's degree in sociology from Point Park College in He played two seasons at Davidson College ( ), serving as team co-captain as a senior, and two at Butler County (Pa.) Community College ( ) where he earned an associate's degree in He helped Butler to the Skyline Athletic Conference title and was coached there by Tom Beckett, currently the Athletic Director at Yale. McConnell, the oldest of eight children, comes from a basketball family. Tom is one of six McConnell siblings who attended college on a basketball scholarship. In addition to Suzie, Tom's sister Kathy is currently an assistant coach with the WNBA's Tulsa Shock. Born on Nov. 15, 1959, McConnell and his wife Lisa have six children: Tommy (27), Ashley (26), Sean (23), Luke (22) and twins Christopher and Mary Grace (14). He also has two grandchildren and is expecting a third. His daughter-in-law Jill was a standout basketball player at Canisius College.

10 MEDIA SUPPLEMENT DIRECTOR OF BASKETBALL OPERATIONS SARAH TEACHEY Experience: Second Season at ODU Alma Mater: Miami (Ohio) 99 Sarah Teachey begins her second stint as Director of Basketball Operations for the Lady Monarchs in the season. Teachey, who served as ODU's first Director of Basketball Operations during the season, most recently served as the Director of Marketing with Fresno State athletics where she led the marketing and promotions charge for the Bulldogs 19 Division I sports for three years. While at Fresno State, Teachey created the ultimate fan experience resulting in increased ticket sales in several sports as well as large community outreach programs such as TeamSmile, WBCA Pink Zone, Community Food Bank and Lift Up America. She was involved with numerous WAC Conference Championships and the 2008 Fresno State NCAA Baseball National Championship. At Teachey will work closely with the day-to-day operation of the women's basketball program including all team travel arrangements, budget assistance and oversight, camps, and the Lady Monarch Pride booster club. Her role will focus heavily on working within the community and the Monarch ReachOut programs. Prior to her role at ODU Teachey spent three seasons working with the WNBA's Seattle Storm, then coached by ODU alumna Anne Donovan, as the Senior Coordinator of Community Relations and Promotions. While in Seattle, she helped implement community outreach plans including Read To Achieve, Mind.Body.Spirit, Jr. WNBA/NBA, and Breast Health Awareness and Stormin' the Sound off-season community relations campaign. Teachey also developed various marketing initiatives to promote the 2004 WNBA Champions. A 1999 graduate of Miami University of Ohio with a degree in Health and Sports Studies, Teachey received her masters degree from New Hampshire in Kinesiology-Sports Studies in She is married to David Teachey who is in the U.S. Navy and they have one daughter, Addison, born in 2008
