4 Last time out: Bulls Drop Shootout in Home Opener UB found itself in an offensive showdown in its home opener against Cornell Saturday afternoon, with the Big Red (2-0) holding off the Bulls (2-1) for a win. Mackenzie Loesing (20pts, 10 rbs) and Kristen Sharkey (25 pts, 14 rbs) each posted double doubles in the loss. The Bulls started out strong from the opening tip, earning a 10-0 lead and holding Cornell scoreless for the first six minutes and 40 seconds of the game with six turnovers and 0-9 shooting from the field. The visitors would answer back, though, with a run to take the lead. Heading into the halftime break, UB pushed ahead for a lead. Cornell would be held to just 2-14 on two-point field goals, but were able to find the equalizer with six three pointers to just a pair for the Bulls. Cornell would chip away early at the UB lead in the second half, eventually going ahead three minutes in after a 10-2 run. After a brief lead for Buffalo with 16:24 to play, Cornell would make a 14-4 run that would give it a lead it would ultimately never give back. For the game, Sharkey would hit shots on the interior, and would chip in six offensive rebounds. Loesing would slash through the Big Red defense with 6-13 shooting from inside, and she would finish with five offensive rebounds, three steals and three assists. The Bulls won the rebounding margin 57-44, a total which included 25 offensive rebounds. That offensive rebound total is the most by any UB squad since Jan. 11, 2012, and the 57 rebounds are the most the team has combined for since Jan. 13 of last season. JACK-ED UP Head coach Felisha Legette-Jack begins her second season as the head coach of the Bulls. She brings an extensive resume with her, having success as a head coach at both Hofstra and Indiana. For Coach Jack, this is a homecoming as the Upstate New York native now coaches just two hours away from where she had success as a player both in high school and collegiality at Syracuse University. In 12 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Legette-Jack has a record of She has reached the WNIT four times in her career. Familiar Faces On The Bench The Bulls return nearly the entire coaching staff from , with the lone replacement being a familiar face to fans of the program. Ashley Zuber, a 2011 graduate and veteran floor general for the team, has joined the coaching staff. Leaning on her exercise science degree earned at UB, Zuber will help manage the team s stable of guards, as well as manage the team s nutrition and conditioning. She reunites with her former teammate Kourtney Brown, who is in her second season as an assistant. Also in her second season is Bernitha Johnson, who was on the staff at Binghamton since 2005, and served as associate head coach there before joining the Bulls. Aside from coaching, she heads up the team s recruiting efforts. Rounding out the staff is Paja Grasevova, who begins her eighth season as Director of Basketball Operations. 5 The Goop Scoop As she enters her senior season, point guard Margeaux Gupilan had her best season last year as a junior as she played in 32 games, averaging 6.3 points per game with 4.1 assists and 2.3 rebounds. She has shown her ability as passer, penetrator and spot-up shooter that makes her dangerous when she is on the floor. Last season, she finished with career highs of 20 points and seven steals against Binghamton, and scored in double figures six times. She peaked during the MAC tournament, averaging 13.5 points per game in Cleveland. Christa Blockas Just a junior, forward Chista Baccas is climbing up the career block list for the program. After going from 30 blocks as a freshman to a whopping 88 as a sophomore, Baccas enters her junior year in fourth place for career blocks. She led the MAC by a wide margin in the category last season, averaging 2.8 per game. With just 46 blocks this season, she can claim second place, but she has some work to do to catch up to current coach Kourtney Brown, who reigns on top with 260. Redemption Song UB will have a chip on its shoulder this season, and plenty of chances to earn some payback. Out of the 11 non-conference games on the schedule, eight are rematches from last season. In those eight games last season, the young Bulls had growing pains and a 1-7 record. Each game will be a unique test, with six of the eight games this season contested on the road. She played high school basketball just down the road for Kenmore West High School. Joining Malone on the post will be Nia Roberts, who served as captain for three seasons at Norland high school in Miami, FL. As a senior, she led the Vikings to a 28-4 record and was named the Miami-Dade Player of the Year. The team also brings in a pair of athletic freshmen guards in Joanna Smith and Camera Miley. Smith guided her Southaven High School squad to a top-10 ranking in the state of Mississippi, and she was selected to play in the North vs. South All-Star game. Miley averaged 14.5 points, 3.9 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game as a senior at Midwood high school in Brooklyn, NY. Shark Bite Junior Kristen Sharkey shook off the rust after missing her sophomore season with a knee injury, and was a premier two-way threat for the team for the season. She started with a double-double in the season opener, and culminated with a career day in the MAC tournament with 26 points in the quarterfinals against Akron. On Saturday against Cornell, Sharkey led all scorers with 25 points, and added in 14 rebounds to tie a career high while leading the team. She also added in a career-high three blocks and had a pair of assists in one of her best games ever with the team. Pushing the Agenda Starting this season, the women s game will feature the 10-second backcourt violation. The Bulls have used that to its advantage early, with 57 turnovers forced and 62 points scored directly off of turnovers in the two exhibition games. With a roster that can run 12 deep, the offensive mindset in the preseason has been to get up and down the court. Pushing aside the traditional half-court offense that led to just over 61 points per game last season, the team has shown early signs that this season s offense has explosive potential. The Lower Third The Buffalo defense harassed the Binghamton Bearcats throughout the season opener, forcing a meager day from the field for the home team. Under Coach Jack, the Bulls have held opponents to under 30 percent shooting on eight different occasions. She played in all 32 games, and went from scoring six points total in her freshman season to averaging five points per game with four double-digit scoring performances. She led the team with 43 three pointers, and also led the team with a.361 field goal percentage from deep. 7 Bench Press The coaching staff will have a hard time deciding what players can get in the game this season, with a roster of 14 players (13 active) who can play meaningful minutes. Despite a shorter bench last season, the team ranked in the top three among all conference members in bench scoring margin. In the regular season last year, the UB bench averaged over 20 points per game, with the opposition averaging 15. For the first time all season, the Bulls would rely on its starting five, giving limited minutes to the bench. Ayana Bradley was a key reserve, pulling down five rebounds and scoring her first career point in 12 minutes of action. Tough Out of the Gate After allowing first half scoring numbers of just 14, 15, 15, 15 and 18 to opponents in 2012, the Bulls tightened up all the way to single digits for points allowed in a half when Kent State scored just nine March 3, The nine points were tied for the fewest allowed in a game since 1983, match the figure allowed against Oral Roberts back in Since joining the MAC prior to the season, UB allowed 14 points or less in a half five times, with two coming under Coach Jack s regime: * 9 vs. Kent State - Mar. 3, First Half * 14 vs. Western Michigan - Jan. 26, First Half 13 vs. Western Michigan - Feb. 8, First Half 12 vs. Niagara - Dec. 1, First Half 14 vs. Akron - Jan. 5, First Half * - Under Coach Jack Bulls Ink Two to NLIs Head coach Felisha Legette-Jack and the Buffalo women s basketball coaching staff announced a pair of signings for the Fall period, with the addition of Mariah Suchan (Wichita, KS) and Destiny Woodard (Port Orange, FL). Suchan was an impact performer for her high school team since her debut with the varsity team as a freshman, when she started in 11 games. She blossomed as a sophomore, averaging 13.6 points, ten rebounds and earned her league s defensive player of the year honors. Woodard averaged 17 points, five assists, four rebounds and four steals per game while leading her team to the Class 4A Final Four. Destiny was voted to the All-County first team and set the school record for three pointers in a single season with 64. Halves and Halve Nots There was a distinct dividing line for the Bulls last season, with the team owning an 11-1 record when leading at halftime, but just 1-19 when trailing. The lone win after a halftime deficit would come on Jan. 31, when the team would trail at halftime on the road against the Miami Redhawks, but 17 points by Mackenzie Loesing in the final 20 minutes would boost the Bulls to a win. Running of the Bulls Through five games (two exhibition), the Bulls have found success through big runs to help gain an advantage. Three times, the Bulls have made big runs to come from behind to earn wins, and in a pair of contests the game would open with fast starts. 8 Felisha Legette-Jack Head Coach Second Season Syracuse, 89 Felisha Legette-Jack begins her second year as head coach, leading the Bulls to one of their most successful years by a first-year head coach. Legette-Jack was named the 12th head coach in Buffalo women s basketball history on June 14, A New York native with 10 years of Division I head coaching experience, Legette-Jack most recently spent six years as head coach at Indiana University. In , UB overcame a 2-11 non-conference season by going 8-8 in the Mid-American Conference and advancing to the Quarterfinals of the Mid- American Conference Tournament. The eight MAC victories were tied for third most since joining the league and Legette-Jack helped coach two players onto the All-League Team. Despite dealing with injuries all year, Legette-Jack coached Mackenzie Loesing onto the All-Freshman team, while Loesing and Christa Baccas were both named All-MAC Honorable Mention. Before coming to Buffalo, Legette-Jack led the Hoosiers to three postseason appearances, winning 18 or more games in each of those years. In , Indiana won a program record-tying 21 games. While in Bloomington, Legette-Jack knew how to get the most out of her players, both on the court and in the classroom, as evident by her 21 Academic All-Big Ten selections in six seasons. On the basketball floor, the Hoosiers won five games over nationally-ranked opponents, including a victory over fourth-ranked Ohio State in Prior to taking the reins at Indiana, Legette-Jack led Hofstra University to unprecedented levels of success. She guided Hofstra to one of its best seasons in school history in The Pride s 19 victories that season still stand as the second-most in school history, and the 12 league triumphs tied a school record. In addition to the team success, Hofstra ranked among the CAA s top three in scoring offense (69.5 ppg), field goal percentage defense (.379), rebounding offense (43.0), rebounding margin (+3.9), assists per game (16.0), steals (11.03), offensive rebounds (16.73), defensive rebounding (26.27) and three-point field goals per game (5.37). The Buffalo defense forced 17 turnovers and held the Bearcats to 17 percent field goal shooting in the first half to build its lead in what was the season opener for both teams. Mackenzie Loesing led all scorers with 16 points in 18 minutes. With all 12 active players seeing at least seven minutes, the Bulls defensive intensity came at Binghamton in waves. The defense held the Bearcats to zero points in the first three minutes of the game, and at the 10-minute mark in the half, the Bulls had streaked to a 23-6 lead. A three pointer from Binghamton s Morgan Murphy would make it 23-9, and that would be the closest the host squad would manage the rest of the way. As the first half concluded, the stats showed off UB s defensive game plan, with Binghamton hitting just 5-29 attempts, and scoring almost half of its 19 points at the free throw line. Loesing, Sloane Walton and Margeaux Gupilan would shoulder the offensive load for the Bulls in the half, combining for 24 points. Gupilan would hit a trio of three pointers to lead all scorers in the half, setting the tone from deep that would see Buffalo making 6-15 attempts after struggling in the exhibition season. The teams would trade baskets in the second half, with the Bulls using a quick run late in the game to take its biggest lead of the day. Leading 51-36, a 12-2 run capped off by a Walton three pointer gave Buffalo a lead. Despite shooting just 28 percent as a team in the final half, Buffalo still outscored Binghamton in the half and would force nine turnovers in the final 20 minutes alone. Despite a close margin of turnovers (17 for Binghamton, 15 for Buffalo), the Bulls were able to take advantage of its defense, scoring 27 points off turnovers while limiting Binghamton to just 13 points on turnovers. Loesing, Walton and Gupilan would all score in double figures, with the senior Gupilan having a solid allaround game. Aside from her scoring, she would pull down three rebounds, make three steals and pass out two assists. The win moves UB s record to 2-0 this season, while the Penguins drop to 0-2. The Bulls have won back-to-back road games to start a season for the first time since The Penguins were in control for much of the first half, grabbing its biggest lead of the game with 11 minutes left in the first half with a advantage. The Bulls would use a slow but sure gameplan to chip away, and would get within two before settling for the halftime score. A three pointer from Youngstown in the second half s first possession would be a turning point for UB, who would respond with a 13-0 run over a four minute stretch that would give it a lead it would never relinquish. Sloane Walton capped the run off with a bang, hitting a three pointer in transition that forced a time out from the home side. With many of the normal rotation players in deep foul trouble, the Bulls turned to its four-member freshman class for a lift. They would get it in spades, headed up by Camera Miley. With Gupilan forced to play just four minutes in the second half, Miley spearheaded the offense and posted eight points with three rebounds, four assists and two steals in the final half alone. Nia Roberts, playing in her first collegiate game, would score four points that was highlighted by an acrobatic basket and a foul. Spurred on by the freshmen, the UB bench outscored Youngstown State s reserves Loesing and Kristin Sharkey were also critical in the offense s success in the final 20 minutes. After struggling to get her 11 points on 12 shots in the first half, she would score 11 points on just eight shots in the second to come just shy of matching her career high. Sharkey, who was plagued with quick fouls throughout the game, made the most of her 15 minutes of playing time, scoring nine points with three rebounds in the second half. After allowing 50 percent shooting in the first half to the Penguins, the defensive vice was clamped down and YSU would hit just 7-29 shots the rest of the way. Of the home team s 33 points in the second half, 17 would come from the charity stripe. Mackenzie Loesing and Kristen Sharkey each posted double doubles to lead the team in the loss. The Bulls started out strong from the opening tip, earning a 10-0 lead and holding Cornell scoreless for the first six minutes and 40 seconds of the game with six turnovers and 0-9 shooting from the field. Heading into the halftime break, UB pushed ahead for a lead, with Sharkey posting 11 points and five rebounds and Loesing chipping in seven points, six rebounds and a pair of steals. The respective strong points for the two teams would hold serve in the second half, with the Bulls continuing to punish the paint for a final advantage of 44-14, with 21 points scored on offensive rebounds. With just under four minutes in the game, Cornell would take its biggest lead with a advantage. The Bulls would fight back, though, with an 11-3 run from that point until the 1:29 mark. The run was highlighted by a three-point play from Loesing, who would then draw a charge on the defensive end. Free throws would be the difference, with Cornell hitting ten free throws in the final two minutes alone to hold the UB comeback at an arm s length. The Big Red would enjoy a big day at the charity stripe, with a performance compared to a day for the Bulls. The Bulls won the rebounding margin 57-44, a total which included 25 offensive rebounds. That offensive rebound total is the most by any UB squad since Jan. 11, 2012, and the 57 rebounds are the most the team has combined for since Jan. 13 of last season. 19 Danny White, University at Buffalo (UB) Director of Athletics, joined by Pete Augustine, President of New Era, announced the launch of the University at Buffalo: New York Bulls Initiative, and the formation of a volunteer Board of Advisors to provide strategic guidance to the UB Athletics leadership team. Elevating the stature of UB Athletics to a nationally recognized brand in college sports is the purpose of this new initiative. As a member of the Association of American Universities (AAU) and the largest public university in New York State, this initiative will position UB as the premier athletic department in the state. The board is energized by the vision of UB athletics to elevate the profile of its programs to match the university s high academic standards and to bring the message of pride to the many alumni that live across the state Augustine states. Engaging that extensive network of alumni and partnering with key businesses locally and nationally will be a key to this initiative gaining momentum. Over the summer, UB Athletics announced several exciting new media partnerships locally, as well as across the state of New York. In addition, starting this football season, the athletics department has enhanced the tailgate experience with a free concert series and introduced a plan to build the East Club at UB Stadium, spanning the length of what is currently the 200-level. Strategic efforts are underway to galvanize the UB alumni base, and the Western New York community, to bring a vibrant college athletics atmosphere to campus. To be sure, it is our institutional profile and position as New York s largest and most comprehensive public university, that gives UB Athletics more potential than any other program in the country. We have an opportunity to build an athletic program that is commensurate with the university s academic prestige, as so many of our AAU peers in public higher education across the country have done. UB Athletics is extremely fortunate to have so many leaders in our community, as well as the sports industry nationally, who believe in our vision and offer their support. We are grateful for Pete s service as our chair, as well as the willingness of all our new board members to advance this initiative, said White.
