The series between the two squads began on Jan. 14, 1999 with a Golden Eagles OT win. > Oakland and Oral Roberts each earned three Summit League Championships, which is a four-way tie for second in league history. > If the Golden Grizzlies defeat Oral Roberts on Thursday, it would snap a two-game losing streak. Oakland picked up its last win against Oral Roberts on March 8, > Oakland holds an 8-6 advantage over the Golden Eagles on its home court. > A win on Thursday over Oral Roberts would give Oakland its 750 win in program history. > A Golden Grizzly victory would mean Coach Kampe has coached 75 percent of Oakland's 750 program wins. > In Oakland's win over UC Davis, it was the first time this season Oakland shot better than 40 percent from 3-point range. > The Black and Gold earned their 300th win since becoming DI after defeating UC Davis in Anchorage, Alaska. > Oakland is 6-0 this season when holding its opponents to 80 points or less. The Golden Grizzlies lone loss of the season was an loss to Nevada at the Great Alaska Shootout Tournament. > Martez Walker has scored in double digits in seven consecutive games, 5-of-7 being 20-plus point performances, including a career-high 25 points against Alaska Anchorage. > Walker earned a spot on the Great Alaska Shootout Tournament team after averaging 19.3 ppg and knocking down a team best 10 triples in three games. >Stevie Clark has dished out 43 assists, including a career-high 11 against Chicago State. Hayes earned all-league second team honors a season ago. > Isaiah Brock and Oakland University were informed in October that the NCAA has granted the decorated army veteran immediate eligibility. Brock is a 6-foot-8 freshman forward from Baltimore, Md. > Brock was a non-qualifier out of high school and Oakland submitted a waiver to the NCAA seeking immediate eligibility (athletic aid, practice and competition). The NCAA initially granted two of the three requests, and upon Oakland submitting additional information, the NCAA declared Isaiah eligible on all accounts. > Brock was recognized on Veterans Day on Friday night during the opener vs. BGSU. The Golden Grizzlies finished the tournament in fourth place. The Black and Gold opened up the tournament on Friday, Nov. 18 at the O'rena with a win against Goshen College. The remainder of the tournament will continued in Anchorage as Oakland fell on Nevada, but won two-straight against Alaska Anchorage and UC Davis. Oakland made its first appearance at the 39th annual college basketball showcase and became just the fourth Horizon League school to compete in the event and first since Green Bay in The Shootout is the oldest continuously running in-season college basketball tournament in the nation. SIXTH-HIGHEST INCREASE IN ATTENDANCE IN NCAA The Oakland men s basketball team had the sixth-highest jump in game attendance in Division I men s basketball a season ago. The Golden Grizzlies averaged over 4,400 fans at home basketball games. The Golden Grizzlies saw a 94 percent jump in attendance compared to as about 57,000 fans saw an Oakland home game this last season, compared to just 36,000 last season. The Golden Grizzlies set the Athletics Center O rena attendance record twice this past season, first against Valparaiso on Jan. 8 with 4,110 fans and again on Feb. 26 hosting the University of Detroit Mercy with 4,114 fans. Oakland also hosted then-no. 1 Michigan State at the Palace of Auburn Hills on Dec. 22 in front of over 20,000 fans which was the highest rated college basketball game on ESPNU in MOTOR CITY MADNESS The Horizon League Executive Council has approved a revised bracket for the 2017 Little Caesars Horizon League Men s and Women s Basketball Championships. In the new format, the women s basketball championship will run concurrently with the men s as Motor City Madness runs March 3-7, at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. The five days of games will feature men s and women s tournament contests on each day, beginning with the 8-9 and 7-10 games on Friday, March 3. The winners of those contests will play the Nos. 1 and 2 seeds in the second round, with the victors advancing to Monday s semifinals. Sunday s third round contests will see the 4-5 and 3-6 seeds play for a berth in the semifinals. Semifinal winners will meet on Tuesday, March 7, for the Horizon League title and automatic bid into the NCAA Men s and Women s Tournaments marks the final year the Little Caesars Horizon League Men s and Women s Basketball Championships will be contested at Joe Louis Arena before moving to the stateof-the-art Little Caesars Arena, currently under construction in downtown Detroit. NON-CONFERENCE SUCCESS The Golden Grizzlies finished the season with eight wins during the nonconference regular season, the most wins in the Division I era. HIPSHER JOINS OAKLAND HOOPS Oakland University head men s basketball coach Greg Kampe announced the addition of Dan Hipsher to his coaching staff. Hipsher joins the staff after spending the past three seasons as the head coach of Texas Rio Grande. Hipsher has 18 years of head coaching experience most notably at Stenson ( ), Akron ( ) and UTRGV ( ) and is a five-time conference coach of the year. NEW MANN ON CAMPUS Greg Kampe announced the addition of Cornell Mann to his coaching staff in June. Mann comes to Oakland after being an assistant coach at Iowa State for four seasons. Mann was a member of the Iowa State coaching staff from and helped the Cyclones achieve unprecedented success. ISU went to a school-record four consecutive NCAA Tournaments and achieved a overall record. Mann was pivotal in recruiting Michigan-native Monte Morris to Iowa State who is one of the nation s top point guards after being named a two-time Bob Cousy Award Finalist. MATT DERY JOINS BASKETBALL BROADCAST TEAM Matt Dery will join the Oakland Broadcast team as the color analyst alongside play-byplay voice Neal Ruhl and inside-the-huddle reporter Cortney Scott. Dery is the former midday host of (WMGC-FM) and has over 20 years of experience as a Detroit sportscaster. Dery most recently worked as the in-game host for the United Shore Professional Baseball League (2016) at Jimmy John s Field in Utica, Mich. He has plenty of basketball experience, calling Mid-American Basketball games on Fox Sports Detroit (2010), serving as play-by-play man for Detroit Mercy ( ) on the radio, ESPN3 and WADL-TV, and play-by-play fill-in for the Detroit Pistons on television and radio (1998-Present). ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Martez Walker scored 25 points to lead Oakland to a victory over Alaska Anchorage in the Great Alaska Shootout on Friday. Jalen Hayes had 13 points and Nick Daniels added 12 for Oakland (5-1), which concludes the tournament in the fourth-place game, while the Seawolves will play for seventh. Both games are Saturday. Diante Mitchell made four 3-pointers and scored 22 points to lead Alaska Anchorage. Spencer Svejcar chipped in 17 points. The Grizzlies had a double-digit lead before Alaska Anchorage used a 14-5 surge to pull to with 2:20 to play. Sherron Dorsey-Walker made a pair of free throws, Walker made a layup and Daniels added one more from the line to seal it for Oakland. Alaska Anchorage, which counted the game as an exhibition, missed five field goals down the stretch.
