Prior to the early tip, schoolchildren from local communities will learn about life in college with a tour of the campus. Senior Janelle Harrison has fueled Hartford s current winning streak with consecutive double-figure scoring games against Niagara (14 points), CCSU (19) and Bryant (17). Harrison became the second Hawk in as many weeks to earn America East Player of the Week honors (Dec. 11) after averaging a double-double (18 points, 10 rebounds) against the Blue Devils and the Bulldogs. The Hawks have received a huge spark off the bench from junior transfer Alexia Douglas. She has scored in double figures in each of her last three, including back-toback career-best 12-point outings against CCSU and Bryant. 3 INSIDE THE MATCHUP ABOUT THE SERIES The Hawks and Saints will be meeting for the 10th time and the second time in as many seasons on Thursday. Siena scored wins in each of the first eight games of the series from 1985 to 2002, but Hartford snapped that streak with a four-point win in Loudonville, N.Y., last season. SIENA SCOUT Emmanuella Edoka s first career double-double (19 points, 17 rebounds) led Siena past Sacred Heart, 62-57, on Sunday afternoon. On the season the Saints (5-5) are averaging 64.6 points, but are conceding 67.1 per game. Kollyns Scarborough, who is the team s lone double-figure scorer at 12.6 per game, also leads Siena on the boards with 7.2 per outing. LAST TIME THEY MET Four Hawks scored in double figures to lead Hartford to an win at Siena last November. Former senior Deanna Mayza scored a team-high 19 points while Lindsey Abed, who pulled the Hawks out of a pair of late deficits with clutch three-pointers inside of the game s final minute, added 16. Harrison led all scorers with 17 points and 11 rebounds as the Hawks stormed back from a 16-2 deficit to come away with the win. NEXT ON TAP The Fordham Holiday Classic serves as the Hawks final tune-up before the start of America East action. Hartford takes on the host-team Rams on Thursday, Dec. 28 (1 p.m.), in the opening game of the Classic before it faces either UC Davis or Yale on Friday, Dec. 29. QUITE THE HALF After lighting up the scoreboard for a season-best 23 points in the first quarter against CCSU earlier this month (Dec. 6), the Hawks went on to net 40 points before halftime, the most in a half for the team this season. DaCOSTA POW Sophomore Sierra DaCosta became the first Hawk this season to be named the America East Player of the Week on Dec. 4. She earned the honor after setting, and then tying, her career high with 26 points during the Hawks two games against North Carolina (Dec. 1) and Niagara (Dec. 3). With the honor, DaCosta has earned weekly recognition from the America East five times during her career, as she was a four-time Rookie of the Week last season. OFF THE PINE Junior transfer Alexia Douglas has logged some quality minutes for the Hawks off the bench, especially as of late. After combining for 28 points in her first seven games, the guard more than doubled her scoring output for the season in her last three (34 points) with consecutive double-figure scoring games against Niagara (10 points), CCSU (12) and Bryant (12). Averaging the second-most minutes among non-starters (18.2 per game), Douglas has knocked down a team-best 12 three-pointers. HAWKS SCORING MARGIN DIFFERENTIAL month, as the team s previous two victories away from West Hartford came on neutral ground as part of the FIU Thanksgiving Classic. With matchups at Syracuse and UNC, the road slate has not been an easy one so far. But despite the 1-2 record, the Hawks gave those ACC opponents a run for their money, falling by 12 to the Orange and remaining within striking distance for three-and-a-half quarters against the Tar Heels. HARRISON S HAVOC Hartford s full-court press has reaped the benefits of having senior Janelle Harrison s 6-foot-0 frame and wingspan in the backcourt in each of the last two seasons. In alone, Harrison came away with more steals (61) than in her first two seasons combined (57), earning America East All-Defensive Team laurels at the conclusion of the regular season. She has been just as effective this season, leading the way with 22 steals (2.2 per game). With 140 on her career, Harrison is 19 steals away from cracking the program s top-10 in the category. WE LOVE THE 80s The Hawks lit up the scoreboard against Niagara earlier this month (Dec. 3), putting up a season-best 83 points in the win. It marked the fifth time under Kim McNeill that Hartford eclipsed the 80-point mark, and the second-most points scored in a game during the Kim McNeill era. TWO BIG GAMES Sierra DaCosta strung together two of the finest games of her career earlier this month against UNC and Niagara. Entering the UNC game with 50 points in six games on the season (8.3 per game), she more than doubled that scoring output in those two games alone. Behind 57 percent shooting from the field, including a 45 percent clip from long range, DaCosta totaled 52 points in those games WON LOST HAWKS REBOUNDING MARGIN DIFFERENTIAL VISION Netting a career high 26 points at UNC (Dec. 1) before tying that career high two days later against Niagara (Dec. 3), DaCosta became the first player this season to net 20-plus points in back-to-back outings. The last Hawk to drop 20 or more points in consecutive games was Deanna Mayza, when she had 24 against Sacred Heart (Dec. 4) and 22 at Niagara (Dec. 7) in the season. ABED ASSIST-TURNOVER Lindsey Abed s assist-to-turnover ratio is outstanding this season. Dishing out a team-best 38 assists and committing just nine turnovers, her 4.2:1 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks her No. 5 in the nation. For her career, Abed has recorded 15 games of 5-plus assists. More impressively, she has committed two-or-fewer turnovers in 49-of-63 career games played. 20 DUBS Last month s win against Alabama A&M (Nov. 26) at the FIU Thanksgiving Classic was the 20th of McNeill s career at Hartford. Needing just 37 games to reach the milestone, she became the fastest women s basketball coach in Hartford s Division I era to amass 20 victories. TURN THE PAGE In each of their 10 games this year, the Hawks have committed fewer turnovers than their opponents. Ranking No. 10 in the nation and first in the America East with an impressive turnover margin, Hartford s forced turnovers per game are No. 26 in the nation. These are not new trends for the Hawks, as they finished the season ranked No. 8 in the nation in turnover margin and No. 10 in turnovers forced. SOLID CONVERSION Hartford s ability to convert off of its opponents turnovers has made Kim (POS) (NEG)

6 McNeill s defensive-minded style of play even more appealing. More than 30 percent of Hartford s scoring has been off of the other teams miscues, as the Hawks are averaging 20.2 points per game off of turnovers. In addition, the Hawks have scored 18 or more points off missteps by the opposing team six times this season, hitting a season-best mark of 33 on two occasions against Delaware (Nov. 13) and CCSU (Dec. 7). NO TURN FOR ABED As a team, the Hawks have taken great care of the ball this season, but no one has limited her turnovers better than Lindsey Abed. She has recorded more minutes than any other Hartford player (35.4 per game), and has committed the fewest turnovers (9) among fellow Hawks that average at least 22 minutes per game. MORE TURNOVER The Hawks have forced 20 or more turnovers six times this season, forcing two of those opponents into 30-plus miscues. Earlier this season, Hartford turned Delaware over 34 times on Nov. 13, which are the most turnovers forced by the Hawks since committed 36 on Jan. 14, FROM THE LINE The Hawks have been more aggressive taking it to the rim this season, and it has been reflected in their numbers at the line. Ranking in the nation s top-50 in both free-throw attempts and makes, Hartford has visited the free-throw line 30 more times in its first 10 games (194) than at this point last season (164). In addition, the Hawks are scoring nearly three more points from the stripe this season, averaging 13.7 points per game so far in comparison to 11.4 in the team s first 10 contests last year. ABED MVP Abed was feeling the heat in sunny Florida last month. At the FIU Thanksgiving Classic, she put together two outings in double figures, scoring 13 in the Hawks win against Charleston Southern before pouring in a season-best 22 the next day in the victory against Alabama A&M. Averaging 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.0 steals in the two games, Abed was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. GOOD HANDLE Abed got her junior season off to an impressive start. She logged 112-plus minutes (3-plus games) of clean basketball and did not commit her first turnover until 35 seconds into the first quarter at Syracuse (Nov. 20). Since then, Abed has limited her miscues to just nine, and on the season, she is averaging less than one (0.9) per game. THOU SHALT NOT STEAL After shattering the program s record and finishing the season ranked No. 5 in the nation with 11.9 steals per game in , the Hawks have continued to be a force to be reckoned with defensively in Totaling 122 steals so far, Hartford s 12.2 swipes per game are the 18th-most in the nation. In seven of the Hawks last nine games, the team has come away with double-digit thefts, including a season-best 20 against Delaware on Nov. 13. SWIPE SPECIALISTS The distribution of Hartford s league-leading 122 steals this season has been outstanding. Each player that has averaged 12 or more minutes per game (seven total players) this season has recorded at least 10 steals. Among those seven, four have come away with 16 or more, led by Janelle Harrison (22) and Jade Young (18). NOT PLAYING YOUNG Young has not been living up to the name on the back of her jersey. She has already made an immediate impact on the court for the Hawks. One of the first players off the bench for Hartford, Young, who recorded her first double-figure scoring game (10 points) against Delaware (Nov. 13), is averaging 5.9 points. She has been even more impressive defensively, as she is currently second on the team in steals (18) and third in defensive rebounds (21). SCORING STREAKS Harrison has scored points in each of her last 47 games going back to a Feb. 8, 2016 matchup against. DaCosta also has an impressive rally going, scoring in every game of her career, a total of 39 games. 7 DaCosta received the honor in October. A sophomore, she is coming off a campaign that saw her earn America East Rookie of the Year distinction. In addition, DaCosta is the lone non-senior on the Preseason Team. BRIGHT LIGHTS The Hawks non-conference schedule featured a trio of games against high-major opponents. After tipping off the season against Villanova and taking on Syracuse in its first road game of the year, the start of December was not much lighter, as the Hawks opened the month in Chapel Hill against North Carolina on Dec. 1. GENERAL LEE Coming off her second-straight nod to the America East All-Conference Third Team in , Darby Lee made a big step forward last year and took continued to make an impact on THE LAST TIME... both ends of the court. She averaged a career-high 10.4 points per game on.468 shooting from the field, adding career-best numbers in steals (58), assists (35) and blocks (13). Lee has been just as solid this year, scoring in double figures five times to rank third on the team in scoring with 10.2 points per game. DIABETES AWARENESS The Hawks joined forces with the Greater Connecticut and Western Massachusetts chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) against Hofstra last month to promote awareness of Type 1 Diabetes. It marked the second straight year that Hartford held a Diabetes Awareness Game. Diabetes is close to the Hawks hearts, as Kim McNeill s father, Benjamin Hairston, passed away as a result of the disease.
