PRESEASON NEC POLL: According to a preseason poll voted on by league coaches, Fairleigh Dickinson was predicted to finish sixth in the 12-team conference, released, Nov. 5. Along with the poll resutls, the preseason All-NEC team was also released. None of the honorees are seniors (three juniors and two sophomores). Defending conference champ, Sacred Heart, stands as the preseason favorite to capture the NEC women s basketball crown. Saint Francis (PA), which fell to Sacred Heart in the 2009 NEC Championship Game, garnered two first-place votes to finish second in the poll, one spot ahead of Central Connecticut State (third). Robert Morris claimed the lone remaining firstplace nod and took fourth. Fairleigh Dickinson is sandwiched between No. 5 Quinnpiac and Garden State rival Monmouth (seventh). Mount St. Mary s claimed the eighth spot in front of Long Island (ninth) and NEC newcomer Bryant (tenth). Wagner (eleventh) and St. Francis (NY) (twelfth) round out the results of the annual preseason survey. Being picked in the middle of the pack can sometimes be a good spot to be, third-year head coach Peter Cinella said. Our goal is to finish at the top, and it will take a lot of work to get there. We want to be the team on the attack and become one of those top teams OUTLOOK: In , the new rendition of the Knights will look to continue to build on the foundation their leader has built for them over the past two seasons. A year ago, Cinella s squad was coming off a season in which they were seeded fifth in the conference tournament. Expectations were high going into the season, as they were tabbed to finish fifth in the NEC. However, a string of injuries and bad breaks kept the Knights from building on their momentum from the previous season. Instead, they took a step back in terms of overall wins and losses. However, the Knights did finish 9-9 in the conference for the second straight season, earning the seventh seed in the conference tournament. Fairleigh Dickinson s winning percentage proved the lowest in the heralded coach s 16-year collegiate career. The squad looks to take two steps forward this season in terms of its overall record and performance. Throughout his career, Cinella has learned that winning is an attitude an attained swagger ultimately providing a byproduct of effort and ability. In his third season at the helm, he is saddled with the responsibility of making his young squad believe (there are no seniors on the squad), trust their individual abilities, their teammates commitment, and FDU s potential as a unit. In all, year three proves a pivotal stepping-stone in a turnaround venture, as Cinella gameplans to bring the women s basketball program to the Northeast Conference elite. We have four girls returning who all have the potential to score in double figures every night, Cinella said. We re looking to be competitive throughout the season, and need to prove ourselves every game. Cinella said. The team will feature high energy and hustle for all 40 minutes. The staff expects a winning season and another berth in the NEC Tournament. The team has already started FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON WOMEN S BASKETBALL

8 to establish an identity for this season. On offense, look for the Knights to push the ball when they have the chance. If not, the team will execute plays in their half court offense. Cinella said the half court offense is an open offense, comparing it to the dribble drive. On defense, look for the Knights to change their defenses up to confuse their opponents along with mixing in some presses from time to time. We are a quick, athletic, guard-focused team. On offense and defense, we need to take advantage of our personnel and get to the line. We ranked second in the league last season in free throw percentage (.746), Cinella said. Defensively, we will be giving up some height, so we will need to force turnovers with our quickness. We have been one of the top teams in the league in field goal percentage, including second overall my first year. Leading the Knights will be sophomore guard Mariyah Laury. The native of Orange, NJ looks to improve on her overall game after a very impressive freshman year in which she was named to the Northeast Conference All- Rookie Team. Laury averaged 14.5 points per game to pace the Knights, and her scoring productivity ranked her fourth in the nation for freshman. She will be going into this season riding an 11-game regular season streak of registering double-figure scoring outputs. Junior guard Alyssa Mayrose returns as the only player to start in all 30 contests for the Knights last season. The Freehold, NJ native and last year s Team MVP was recently named captain for this season s edition of the Knights. Mayrose returns as the second leading scorer (12.1 ppg) and leading rebounder (7.1 rpg) from last season. Alyssa is a very good allaround player. She is one of the best defenders in the league. She had a very strong second half of the season last year scoring, including a 30 point outburst in a win win against Mount St. Mary s, Cinella said. Handling the point guard duties for the Knights this season will be red-shirt junior Jordan Sykes. The former NEC All-Rookie performer is looking to build off last year s campaign in which she came off a serious injury. Sykes started 29 of 30 contests last season and averaged a respectable 7.2 ppg. She led the team in assists with 97 and steals with 44. Jordan is going to be much improved coming into this season, Cinella said. She is an aggressive scorer at the point and will also get a lot of assists and rebounds at the position. Last season she had four games where she scored 17 or more points. Jasmyra Saunders returns to the team this season after ng all of last year with an injury. The red-shirt sophomore will be a welcomed addition to the Knights and will add more scoring punch to an all ready deep backcourt. The high-scoring wing was a member of the NEC All-Rookie team after a freshman campaign in which she led the Knights in steals (55) and averaged 13 points per game over her final 12 contests. Another Knight returns to the team this season after also missing last season with an injury. Junior guard Jenna Strich will rejoin the team and look to rediscover her shot from long range. A starter on seven occasions during her freshman campaign, Stritch led the team in three-point shooting and ranked 14th overall in the NEC that season. Sophomore Esther Wallace will be knocking on the door for a starting spot at the center position this season. The 6 2 center started 10 games last season for the Knights as a true freshman. Esther will vie for a starting position, Cinella said. She has improved her offensive game while continuing to maintain a presence on the boards. Sophomore Erica McKeithan will also compete for the starting center position. She started the first twenty games last season and is expected to return and improve on her freshman year campaign. Sophomore forward Amy Longo will also be counted on to contribute more this season. She logged a career high 30 minutes in the NEC tournament game verses Central Connecticut State last season. Juniors Tara Kelly, a center, and Kayla Killian, a forward, will play key roles off the bench. At 6 3, Kelly adds a good athletic outside shot and the ability to block shots. Killian is a solid defender and rebounder on the low post. Freshman Alannah Driscoll-Sbar will look to crack the rotation. One of two freshman on this year s roster, Driscoll-Sbar is a long, athletic defender with a good outside shot. Driscoll-Sbar recorded 1,148 career points, fueled by 17.6 ppg during her senior season at Northampton High in Florence, MA. The McDonald s All-American nominee was also a two-time All-Western Massachusetts standout. She garnered Max- Prep s First Team All-State acclaim. On three occasions, Florence s Gazette and Republic newspapers gave Driscoll-Sbar First Team honors. Rounding out the squad are sophomore Alexa Johnson and freshman Danielle Pankey. Both players would like to improve their overall games. Pankey comes to FDU as a four-year letter winner who played for Middletown South High and hails from Middletown, NJ. She stands as the school s third-leading scorer (1,357 points). Her senior campaign produced 19.3 points per game and 5.2 rebounds a night. She shot over 40% from the floor, including a 39% showing from downtown. THE SCHEDULE: The Knights will play 17 of their 29 contests on the road, including five out of their first six. The season opener on Friday, Nov. 13 presents a tough challenge. The team will make the long drive north and west to FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON WOMEN S BASKETBALL

Road tilts at Lehigh University (Nov. 18), Rider University (Nov. 22), Fordham University (Nov. 24), and Army (Dec. 2) follow before the team comes home to play three contests in a row. We open up with a lot of tough teams on the road and are excited about our tough out of conference schedule, Cinella said. We are excited to open up against Syracuse. Lehigh will present a very tough challenge, too. We always try to maintain our in-state rivalries and play the teams that are close in proximity. The Northeast Conference slate kicks-off at home on Dec. 5 versus Sacred Heart University The team then has two more non-conference games at home - the squad faces 12 total - versus Lafayette College (Dec. 9) and Saint Peter s College (Dec. 12). The Knights go on the road to play St Bonaventure University on Dec. 19. The team plays at home on Jan. 7 against Bryant University, the newest member of the Northeast Conference. Central Connecticut State University then comes to Stratis Arena two days later for a home tilt on Jan 9. There are some strong teams in the conference this season, Cinella said. We will undoubtedly be challenged each and every night. We ll look to do some damage during the second semester. The Knights then will go on the road for three conference games with the first matchup against Quinnipiac on Jan. 11. The team will then make their annual Pennsylvania trip to face Robert Morris University (Jan. 14) and Saint Francis University (PA) on Jan. 16. The team then returns home for two games against the same two Pennsylvania teams the following week. Robert Morris comes to Hackensack on Jan. 21 and Saint Francis (PA) comes two days later on Jan. 23. Bryant University hosts the Knights (Jan. 28) with a second contest as does Central Connecticut State University on Jan. 30. The team then comes home for a home and home matchup against conference rival Monmouth. The teams get together for a game on Feb. 4 before the Knights go down to West Long Branch for a game on Feb. 6. The Knights play host to Wagner College on Feb. 11 and Mount St. Mary s University on Feb. 13 before making the trip to Brooklyn to play Long Island University on Feb 18 and St. Francis College (NY) on Feb. 20. This is the only time the Knights will play these four conference foes this season. After a return game at Sacred Heart University on Feb. 25, the squad comes home for their regular season finale and Senior Day on Feb. 27 against Quinnipiac University. THE POSTSEASON: St. Francis (PA) will host the NEC quarterfinals and semifinals on March 6 and March 7, respectively. On March 14, the highest remaining seed will host the title game on ESPNU at 3:00 p.m. CINELLA SOUNDS OFF: Monmouth (2/4): We did a good job on the boards. We need more players stepping up to be threats. We also need to find away to keep Monmouth off the free throw line before we play them again Saturday. Central Connecticut State (1/30): We played a good first half. Mariyah Laury played hard all game. We did a great job of getting the ball inside. We have to defend and rebound better. Bryant (1/28): We did a great job of battling back from down 10 to take the lead. We were unable to step-up and get a big stop. Bryant was able to hit the big shot down the stretch. St. Francis (PA) (1/23): We really battled hard. The team stepped up and defended and rebounded extremely well. We had great intensity in the second half. The girls wanted it and showed their desire. This was a big win for us versus a very good team. Robert Morris (1/21): Robert Morris completely dominated us on the boards. We couldn t get anything going. We worked on it the last two days in practice. St. Francis (PA) (1/16): We did a great job coming back. We played one of our better stretches of the season to comeback the way we did. Lilley s three changed momentum when she tied the game at 61. We played hard, but I think we ran out of gas. Give St. Francis (PA) credit for knocking down back to back perimeter jumpers. Robert Morris (1/14): When we cut the lead to eight, I though we were in good position to make a run, but they exploded and we couldn t get anything started. Quinnipiac (1/11): Offensively, I thought we did a pretty good job. We were able to get some good shots. Defensively, we gave them too many opportunities inside to make baskets. I was proud of the team for battling back to cut the lead to single digits in the final minute. We just couldn t get the steal to put us over the top FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON WOMEN S BASKETBALL

10 Central Connecticut State (1/9): We showed a lot of courage down 15 points to take the lead in the last minute. Our offense really clicked tonight. We have to do a better job of rebounding the basketball. Bryant (1/7): Overall, it was a great team effort. The team had 40 minutes of intensity. We really stepped up and played our best all-around game. NJIT (1/4): We played really well for the first 30 minutes, taking a nine-point lead. Over the last 10 minutes we hit a tough stretch, and they made their comeback from the free throw line. Overall, I thought we played pretty well, but we have to keep people off the line. Princeton 12/30: Princeton is an unbelievable team. They are the best team we have played all season. There were a couple of points during the first half I thought we could hang with them, but they kept hitting shots. St. Bonaventure 12/19: We played a great first half and had the lead for much of it. Our goal was to be within five points with less than 10 minutes to go and Kayla Killian hits a big three to do that. St. Bonaventure stepped up and hit some big threes and showed why they are an 11-0 team. Overall, we did some very good things today. Saint Peter s 12/12: I am very proud of the team. Our defense was excellent. We forced a lot of turnovers. We did a great job driving the lane and getting good shots. Lafayette 12/9: The team really moved the ball well. We did a great job of driving the paint. Defensively, we did a great job fighting over players and had a much better game rebounding. Sacred Heart 12/5: Sacred Heart is a very good team. They shoot the ball great. We have to improve our overall shooting ability and rebounding. Army 12/2: We went on a really good run to take a lead. They grabbed big offensive rebounds down the stretch. They are a well-coached team and have hard-nosed players. We need to do a better job of rebounding late in the game. Rider 11/22: I am very proud of our team effort. We had to battle all 40 minutes. Our players were very mentally tough. I thought we played well when we were down early, but we hung in there and played great in the second half. Every player contributed. Lehigh 11/18: We played really well in the first half. In the second half, they showed us why they are a championship-level ball club. We ve got to do a better job of forcing turnovers when we are playing against teams that are that sharp on offense. Howard 11/16: I am very proud of the team. We did an excellent joat the line. Howard is going to have a good season. They have a lot of weapons. We did a great job at handling their pressure. Syracuse 11/13: I am very proud of the team. We did a great job. We had the lead at 32-31, and they hit a couple of big shots to end the first half. They outrebounded us pretty well in the second half. I am very proud of the team for battling. We need to get ready for Monday night. MONMOUTH S SIDELINE: A new era in Monmouth University women s basketball was ushered in on Tuesday, May 13, 2008 when Stephanie Gaitley was announced as the sixth Division-I head coach in program history at a press conference in historic Wilson Hall.
