Morgan State scored 21 points off RMU s 15 turnovers, but the Colonials held the edge in points in the paint (34-to-28) and second-chance points (13-to-8). Switch the Calendar - Consider Rob Robinson a slow starter. The senior forward has averaged 22.0 points and 8.5 rebounds while shooting 65.5 percent (19-for-29) from the field in two games since the calendar switched to the year In the first 12 games of the year, Robinson averaged just 7.9 points and 5.2 boards while shooting 42.9 percent (39-for-91) from the floor. It s a familiar trend for Robinson, as last season he averaged 9.1 points and 4.0 rebounds while shooting 50 percent (41-for-82) in the first 13 games, then posted averages of 12.2 points and 6.3 rebounds while converting 52.4 percent (110-for-210) of his shots after the calendar switched to In the first 13 games last year, the Colonials posted a record of 6-7. Afterward? RMU was Getting Comfortable - Robert Morris may have found a consistent offensive presence in Karon Abraham, as the freshman guard continues to produce. Over his last seven games, Abraham is averaging 16.3 points per contest while shooting 54.8 percent (23-for-42) from beyond the arc and 90.6 percent (29-for-32) at the freethrow line. Abraham enters Thursday s Long Island leading Robert Morris in scoring at 12.4 points per contest and owns a team-high 34 three-pointers. Abraham s scoring average, three-point field goal shooting percentage (.486) and average of 2.38 three-pointers per contest are the highest marks by a freshman in the Northeast Conference. Board Stiff - During its current three-game winning streak, Robert Morris has done a solid job on the glass. The Colonials have averaged 40.0 rebounds per contest while holding opponents to an average of just 29.0 boards a game. In the last three games, RMU has established season highs for both rebounds and offensive rebounds. Robert Morris posted a season-high 44 caroms in its Youngstown State (12/30/09), while its 18 offensive boards in an victory over Ohio (1/2/10) marked a season high. K-Ron - Freshman guard Karon Abraham earned his second Choice Hotels Northeast Conference Rookie of the Week honor, Jan. 4, after helping lead the Colonials to a 2-1 record over the holiday season. In the three games, Abraham averaged 18.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game while shooting 46.9 percent (15-for- 32) from the field, including a white hot 61.1 percent (11-for-18) from beyond the arc, and 88.2 percent (15-for-17) from the free-throw line. For the second time this season, Abraham tied the Robert Morris freshman record for three-pointers in a game with six in an victory over Ohio (1/2/10). Abraham finished 6-for-7 from beyond the arc and 5-for-6 from the charity stripe for a career-high 23 points. Toe the Line - While freshman Karon Abraham is developing into a solid threepoint shooter for the Colonials, an area he also excels is getting to the free-throw line. Abraham leads Robert Morris in both free throws (45) and free throw attempts (50). In the 34-year history of the RMU program, no freshman has ever led the Colonials in either free throws or free throws attempted. Green Day - While freshman guard Karon Abraham has proven to be a capable freethrow shooter, senior Dallas Green has taken a more aggressive role in getting to the line this season. After visiting the charity stripe a total of 89 times over 69 games in the previous two seasons (1.29 attempts per game), Green is 32-for-40 (2.86 attempts per game) from the free-throw line this season, a success rate of 80 percent that ranks tied for eighth in the Northeast Conference. Abraham is currently the top free-throw shooter in the league at 90 percent RMU Basketball NEC Champions: 1982, 1983, 1989, 1990, 1992, 2009

7 A Tough Loss - Senior guard Jimmy Langhurst suffered a knee injury during practice Dec. 26, 2009, and will miss the remainder of the campaign. Langhurst, who was RMU s active leading scorer with 781 points, will have surgery on the knee in February. Robert Morris will petition the NCAA at the conclusion of the year to try and get Langhurst a fifth year of eligibility. In four years with Langhurst on the active roster, the Colonials posted a record of 31-8 (.795) when he scored in double figures. Double Your Pleasure - RMU wouldn t have been able to pull out a Youngstown State (12/30/09) without the contributions it received from forwards Russell Johnson and Dallas Green. Each recorded their first career double-doubles in the win, with Johnson posting 12 points and 11 rebounds and Green contributing 10 points and 10 boards. For Green, it marked the first time this season he was not part of the starting lineup. Johnson and Green are the first pair of Robert Morris teammates to record a double-double in the same game since February 28, 2008, when former Colonials A.J. Jackson ( ) and Jeremy Chappell ( ) turned the trick in an Sacred Heart, a span of 50 games. In that contest, Jackson finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds while Chappell tallied 19 points and 10 caroms. The performances by Jackson and Chappell in the win over the Pioneers helped RMU clinch the 2008 Northeast Conference regular-season championship. The Steal City - One area that Robert Morris has excelled under head coach Mike Rice has been the ability of the Colonials to generate offense off of their defense. Through the first 14 games of the campaign, RMU is averaging 6.71 steals per contest, which ranks fifth in the Northeast Conference. The total has allowed the Colonials to average 17.1 points per game off turnovers. RMU s total in steals so far this season shouldn t come as a surprise, as in each of the first two years Rice has been the head coach the Colonials have eclipsed 300 steals. In three seasons under Rice, RMU has averaged 8.82 steals per contest. Game On - While former guard Jeremy Chappell ( ) concluded his career at Robert Morris last year as the all-time leader in games played with 124, it may not be very long that he holds the record. Senior guard Mezie Nwigwe has started 13 of the first 14 games of the campaign, and when he suited up in a victory over Alcorn State (11/21/09) as part of the 2K Sports Classic, he appeared in his 100th career contest. Barring injury, should Nwigwe play in each of RMU s 31 games in , he will establish a new record for games played with 127. Nwigwe has earned 16 career starts at Robert Morris. Three s Company - After a slow start to the season, Robert Morris has gotten back to its ability to convert from beyond the three-point arc. Over the last 11 games, the Colonials have averaged 7.45 three-pointers a game. Included in that stretch is a season-high Albany (11/22/09) in RMU s final game of the 2K Sports Classic. Robert Morris enters Thursday s Long Island ranked second in the Northeast Conference in three-point field goal percentage (.379) and fourth in three-point field goals made per game (6.86). Freshman guard Karon Abraham leads the Colonials with 34 threepointers so far this season. Did You Know? When redshirt freshman guard Velton Jones scored 15 points in his collegiate Syracuse (11/11/09) in the season opener as part of the 2K Sports Classic, he became the first Colonial in school history to lead RMU in scoring in his first collegiate game. Army Reserve - One area that Robert Morris has improved greatly in the three seasons Mike Rice has been the head coach is the contributions from the reserves. In 35 games in , the Colonials averaged 19.9 points per game from their bench, almost four points better than in Through 14 games this season, with arguably RMU s deepest bench in school history, the Colonials have averaged an amazing 26.0 points a game from their reserves. In three seasons under Rice, Robert Morris owns a record of (.658) when the bench scores at least 20 points in a game. RMU has received at least 20 points from its bench in 11 of its 14 games this season. Bench Press - To illustrate the fact that Robert Morris has a deep bench, look no further than in a win over Alcorn State (11/21/09) in Albany, N.Y., as part of the 2K Sports Classic. The reserves scored 59 points compared to 43 for the starting five. Leading the way in that game was freshman guard Karon Abraham, who finished with 18 points on 4-of-6 shooting from the field and a 6-for-7 performance at the charity stripe. The 59 points are the most points scored by the bench in three seasons under head coach Mike Rice, eclipsing the 38 points the reserves scored in a victory over Fairleigh Dickinson (2/7/08) at the Charles L. Sewall Center. The New Recruits - Robert Morris has a total of six players on its roster participating in its first season of Division I basketball in , as redshirt freshmen Velton Jones and Russell Johnson join true freshmen Karon Abraham, Brad Piehl, Lijah Thompson and Coron Williams. In a win over Alcorn State (11/21/09) in Albany, N.Y., as part of the 2K Sports Classic, the six players combined for 54 points and 14 rebounds, converting 54.8 percent (17-for-31) of their shots from the field. Distribution Center - While a lot of attention has been focused on the importance of defense in head coach Mike Rice s system at Robert Morris, it s important to point out RMU s unselfishness on offense. Through 12 games of the campaign the Colonials have averaged assists per game, which ranks second in the Northeast Conference. It s been a balanced attack, as senior guard Mezie Nwigwe has dished out 42 dimes, redshirt freshman Velton Jones owns 37 assists and redshirt freshman Russell Johnson 22. In three seasons with Rice at the helm, Robert Morris has averaged assists per game. Young and Old - RMU entered the campaign with a grizzled bunch of veterans in its five seniors, including three returning starters. However, in order to be successful, head coach Mike Rice pointed out the Colonials need to get production from the six players in their first season of Division I basketball in redshirt freshman Velton Jones and Russell Johnson and true freshman Karon Abraham, Brad Piehl, Lijah Thompson and Coron Williams. As the year turns to 2010, it s so far so good for the young and the restless. The six newcomers have combined for 431 points, or 44.8 percent of the team s total offense. Meanwhile, RMU s five seniors have accounted for 45.7 percent of the team s points, combining for 440. A Decade of Excellence - With the decade of the 2000s rapidly coming to a close, it s time to take a look back at what has transpired at Robert Morris over the last 10 seasons. During the last decade, RMU has watched its 1,000-point club grow from 11 to 19 members, while six of its 15 members of the 500-rebound club have come in the 2000s. Three of RMU s top five scorers have played this decade, led by former guard Jeremy Chappell ( ), who scored 1,875 points to rank third all-time at Robert Morris. Joining Chappell in the top five this decade are former forward Chaz McCrommon ( ), who ranks fourth all-time with 1,623 points, and former guard Maurice Carter, who scored 1,506 points from 2001 to 2005 to rank fifth. In addition, former guard Tony Lee ( ) tied former Colonial Anthony Dickens ( ) as RMU s all-time leading rebounder with 751 caroms. The closest active Colonial to 1,000 career points is senior guard Jimmy Langhurst, who owns 781 points. Langhurst suffered an injury to his knee during practice Dec. 27 and will miss the remainder of the season. 9 Start Me Up - Through the first 14 games of the campaign, third-year head coach Mike Rice has used five different starting lineups. While senior forwards Rob Robinson and Dallas Green, senior guard Mezie Nwigwe and redshirt freshman guard Velton Jones each started the first 10 games of the year, Rice has mixed up his starting five in recent weeks, with junior guard Gary Wallace and redshirt freshman forward Russell Johnson having each started the last four games, while freshman guard Karon Abraham earned his first career Youngstown State (12/30/09). It s a trend that mirrors what Rice did in , as he used seven different starting lineups before forward Dallas Green became a consistent starter for Robert Morris in January of The Colonials finished with an overall record of 6-7 (.462) with the seven different starting five early last year, while RMU finished 18-4 (.818) with Green in the starting lineup. In three seasons as head coach, Rice has used 17 different starting lineups. A look at RMU s starting lineups: Starting Lineups (F, F, G, G, G) and RMU s Record: Robinson, Green, Johnson (F), Nwigwe, Jones (0-1) Robinson, Green, Wallace, Nwigwe, Jones (0-1) Robinson, Green, Langhurst, Nwigwe, Jones (4-4) Green, Piehl, Johnson, Langhurst, Wallace (0-1) Robinson, Johnson, Abraham, Nwigwe, Wallace (3-0) Terrific Trio - Many coaches will say that it s important a team gets production from its seniors, and it s no different for Robert Morris. The Colonials returned three starters this season in forwards Rob Robinson and Dallas Green and guard Jimmy Langhurst that haven proven to important pieces to the rotation head coach Mike Rice employs. When Robinson, Green and Langhurst combine to score at least 30 points in a game, RMU has posted a perfect record of 9-0, with five of those victories coming on the road. The most points the trio have combined for in a game is 41, which came in a Saint Francis (Pa.) (2/26/09) last season that helped snap a two-game slide. Concentration - Jimmy Langhurst has been as reliable a free-throw shooter for Robert Morris over the past three seasons as anyone, and the senior guard will go down as one of the best in school history in converting at the charity stripe. In 35 games last season, Langhurst finished 68-for-80 (.850) at the free-throw line, which fell just two free throws shy of qualifying for the NEC leaderboard. Langhurst posted a career free-throw shooting percentage of 84 percent (142-for-169), which ranks third all-time at Robert Morris. Former Colonial Tom Parks ( ) owns the career record by hitting 86 percent of his attempts. Currently ranking second is former guard Bubba Donnelly, who drained 84.6 percent of his chances from 1991 to In , Langhurst finished 7-for-10 at the charity stripe before suffering a season-ending knee injury. 12 Home Sweet Home - The Colonials are celebrating their 25th season of home games at the Charles L. Sewall Center in , and in recent years RMU has learned to protect its own hardwood. Thanks to a pair of non-conferece victories to open the 2010 calendar year, the Colonials own a record of (.785) at home since the start of the campaign. Robert Morris has garnered at least 11 wins at home in each of the last four seasons. In , RMU finished 14-2 (.875) at home, tying a singleseason school record for wins at the Sewall Center, and all-time owns a record of (.638) in the venue since it opened in Offensive Outburst - RMU s victory over Alcorn State (11/21/09) in Albany, N.Y., as part of the 2K Sports Classic marked the 15th time in school history the Colonials eclipsed the 100-point plateau, and it also marked the most points scored by Robert Morris in a neutral site contest. The old record came in a victory over Texas A&M (11/30/90) as part of the Marshall Classic in Huntington, W.Va. RMU shot 53 percent (35-for-66) from the field against the Braves, a season high, which improved the Colonials to 28-2 (.933) all-time under third-year head coach Mike Rice when shooting 50 percent or better from the floor. Defense Wins Championships - Mike Rice has preached as head coach at Robert Morris that defense wins championships, and the numbers bear that out. Despite owning a record of 2-2 (.500) so far on the season when holding its opponent under 70 points, all-time under Rice the Colonials own a mark of 36-6 (.857) when turning the trick. The Drive For Five - Robert Morris entered the campaign looking to accomplish something that has never been done before in school history. The Colonials are in search of their fifth straight winning season. In the 34-year history of the program, the Colonials have posted four consecutive winning seasons twice. From 1988 to 1992, RMU posted an overall record of (.664), reaching the NCAA Tournament three times over that span. In RMU s latest stretch from 2005 to 2009, the Colonials posted a record of (.651), reaching the NIT (2008) for the first time in school history and the NCAA Tournament once (2009). Five Against One - While Robert Morris searches for its fifth straight winning season in , the Colonials entered the new year as the top program in the Northeast Conference over the last five years. RMU posted an overall record of (.619) from 2004 to 2009, ahead of Central Connecticut State s mark of (.523). In league play, the Colonials were (.678) from 2004 to 2009, also ahead of Central Connecticut State (55-35). In addition, RMU s run over the and seasons that produced a (.725) overall record and 31-5 (.861) league mark is the best two-year stretch in NEC history. Freebies - An area of strength for Robert Morris over the last 10 years has been the club s ability to convert at the free-throw line. Robert Morris has finished in the top five in the Northeast Conference in free-throw percentage in 10 of the last 11 years, including league-best marks of 76.1 percent (452- for-594) in , 75.4 percent (384-for-576) in and 75.6 percent (353-for-467) in In 35 games on the campaign, Robert Morris shot 70.4 percent (481-for-683) from the free-throw line, which ranked fourth in the NEC. Through 14 games this season, the Colonials have converted just 66.4 percent (211-for-318) of their attempts from the charity stripe, which ranks sixth in the conference. Making It Count - While the Colonials have been strong at the free-throw line over the last 15 years, another area RMU excels is hitting free throws in pressure situations. In 35 games on the campaign, Robert Morris finished 145-for-195 (74.4 percent) at the charity stripe in the last five minutes and overtime of games. In the early portion of the campaign, the Colonials have converted 49 of their 74 chances (66.2 percent) at the free-throw line in the last five minutes. Freshman guard Karon Abraham has converted 13 of his 14 opportunities (92.9 percent) so far this season in the last five minutes of games, while junior guard Gary Wallace is 11-for-12 (91.7 percent). Sold Out Sewall - Robert Morris earned its first NEC Tournament championship and subsequent berth in the NCAA Tournament since 1992, and league record sixth title overall, with its win over Mount St. Mary s (3/11/09) in the 2009 NEC Tournament championship game due in no small part to its home-court advantage. A school record 3,227 fans jammed the Sewall Center in RMU s win over the Mount, the first sellout in 24 years at the venue. The old attendance record of 2,880 came in the first contest at the arena, when the Colonials dropped an decision to crosstown rival Duquesne (11/30/85) to open the building Northeast Conference Preseason Coaches Poll According to a poll of league head coaches, the Robert Morris University men s basketball team has been picked to finish tied for third in the Northeast Conference in RMU shares the third spot in the preseason poll with Quinnipiac. It marks the fourth straight year the Colonials have been picked to finish in the top three in the league, as Robert Morris was tabbed second in the 2006 and 2007 polls and third last year. RMU received a pair of first-place votes, with nine going to preseason favorite Mount St. Mary s and one to Long Island, which was picked to finish second in the NEC in The Colonials return three starters and seven letterwinners from a squad that posted an overall record of (.686) and a league mark of 15-3 (.833). RMU is the two-time defending NEC regular-season champion, and in 2009 the Colonials added their sixth NEC Tournament championship and subsequent bid to the NCAA Tournament. In the 2009 NCAA Tournament, Robert Morris, which was seeded 15th in the Midwest Regional, fell to No. 2 seed and eventual national runner-up Michigan State, 77-62, at the Metrodome in Minneapolis, Minn. Conducted annually, NEC coaches have failed to correctly forecast the eventual league champion since selecting Mount St. Mary s to win it all in , and have proven inaccurate in 21 of the last 23 years.
