2 SAL BUSCAGLIA HEAD COACH EIGHTh SEASON AT RMU The 200- Robert Morris University women s basketball team is led by 2- year veteran head coach Sal Buscaglia. Coach Sal, as he is respectfully called, is entering his eighth season at the helm and has turned the Colonials into not only a Northeast Conference contender, but a nationally competitive program in his short time at Robert Morris. Four short years after inheriting a program that went -26 before his arrival, Buscaglia put the Colonials into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history after winning the Northeast Conference Tournament in One season later, and with just three returning letterwinners, Buscaglia pulled the feat off again. Robert Morris returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2008 after winning the NEC Regular Season and NEC Tournament Championships for the second straight season. RMU captured its fifth straight 20- win season, posting a record of 2-0, while playing one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the nation. Through December, 2007, the Colonials had played the 59th-toughest schedule in Division I. In , his Robert Morris squad set team records for regular season wins (22) and conference victories (7) while leading the team to its first outright NEC Regular Season Championship and an eventual Postseason WNIT Tournament. The appearance marked the fourth consecutive season RMU played in a national tournament. The Colonials finished the season 2-9 while picking up a wealth of individual awards. Coach Sal was named the Brenda Reilly NEC Coach of the Year for the second time. Under his tutelage, Angela Pace became the first player in conference history to earn both the NEC Player of the Year award and NEC Defensive Player of the Year. Pace s award marked the thirdtime a Buscaglia player earned the conference s top individual award. Buscaglia showed imagination and innovation in on the offensive side of the ball, installing a dribble-drive motion offense to take advantage of RMU s athletic guards. One of just two teams in women s basketball running that style offense, the Colonials finished 2rd in the nation averaging 7.0 points per game, finished 9th in scoring margin (9.8), finished second in three-point percentage (9.6 percent) and were 29th in field goal percentage (44. percent). Coach Sal also turned former guard Sade Logan into one of the nation s top scorers and the premier three-point shooter in Division I. Logan earned NEC Player of the Year honors, the second Buscaglia recruit to earn the award, while powering one of the top offenses in the nation. She tied the NCAA record for three pointers with 26 and averaged 24.7 points per contest. The Robert Morris squad won their first NEC Tournament since 99 while putting together a record of The Colonials tied for the regularseason conference title with a 5- record, then pushed their way into March Madness with a win over Sacred Heart in the title game. Buscaglia has now led his teams to national tournament appearances and only two losing seasons. The Colonials have finished with 20 wins in five of the last six seasons, including a 2-9 mark in His team s 20-0 mark in with his first recruiting class improved upon a -24 record the season before, marking the third largest turnaround in the nation in one season. Despite not having the reigning Northeast Conference Player of the Year, Sugiery Monsac, for almost the entire season due to an injury, Coach Sal led the Colonials to the conference semifinals in , one year after making it to the conference championship. The Colonials earned victories over Horizon League teams Youngstown State, Loyola (Ill.) and Cleveland State, along with Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Norfolk State. The Colonials also made it to the championship game in the Best Western Roundball Classic before falling to Big East opponent and tournament host South Florida, a 2006 NCAA Tournament team. During the season, the Colonials posted victories over Mid-American teams Akron and Marshall, along with Atlantic-0 member and cross-town rival Duquesne. In addition, Robert Morris beat St. Francis (Pa.), Mount St. Mary s, and Monmouth. Prior to his arrival the team had 6, 5, and - game losing streaks, respectively, against those teams. Before Robert Morris, Buscaglia spent five seasons at Manhattan College ( ). In just his second season at Manhattan, Buscaglia led the Lady Jaspers to a 7-win season, marking the fifth most victories in school history, and was recognized as the 24th most improved team in NCAA Division I. Sewall Center Saturday afternoon. It was a great victory for us. The opening round of the playoffs, the nerves were a bit shaky there at the beginning, said RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. Long Island was predicted to win the conference back in the preseason and we knew it was going to be a tough ball game, just like the two meetings during the regular season. Our kids made the plays in the end and that s where it counts during playoff games. Those rebounds at the end of the ball game were big, and you certainly can t overlook the performances by Kristine and Artemis as well as the will to win by Yohanna Morton who s playing on half a leg. The Colonials, now 6-, advance to the NEC Tournament semifinals for the sixth time in the last seven seasons where they will take on second-seeded Monmouth. The semifinal contest is slated for 7:00 p.m. at the MAC on Tuesday, March 8. Monmouth has won seven in a row and beat us by eight the last time we played, said Buscaglia. We didn t have Yohanna last game. Hopefully she can rested and her knee will get a bit better over the next two days. We re going to have to hit shots against them. If we don t hit shots, we re going to be in trouble. At playoff time, we feel that if we play our game, we can win. Silaraja eclipsed her career-high for the second straight game with 27 points while Spanou also set a new career standard with 24 points. Silaraja was efficient, going 9-of-2 from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range while playing all 40 minutes for the Colonials. Spanou, the 20 NEC Rookie of the Year, picked up her 2th double-double, adding rebounds. She was 0-of-8 from the floor and -of-6 on long balls. The Colonials and Blackbirds (9-) went back and forth with the first 0 minutes featuring five ties and five lead changes. Long Island s Chelsi Johnson forced the game s fifth tie by hitting a short jumper with 9:04 left to play. RMU responded with a 0-2 run, highlighted by a three-pointers from Silaraja and an old-fashioned three-point play by senior Yohanna Morton (Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic / Dominican national Team) that made it a 7-29 ball game with 5:04 left in the first half. Ashley Palmer, who finished with 22 points and rebounds, scored the next seven points for LIU and cut the lead to three before a Morton jumper sent the game into halftime with the Colonials holding a 4-6 lead. Neither team found the same offensive rhythm they had in the first half, but Long Island managed to claw back and tie the game, 49-49, with :58 to play when Chelsi Johnson scored three consecutive LIU points. A Silaraja trey temporarily slowed the Blackbirds, but short jumpers by Palmer and Johnson put the visiting squad on top, The teams traded baskets before Spanou splashed a three-ball to put the Colonials on top, She stretched the margin to four points and a steal by senior Mary Durojaye (London, England / British National Team) led to a Silaraja fast-break lay-in that capped a 7-0 run and gave the Colonials a 6-55 lead. Long Island was still not done. A 9-2 Blackbird surge erased a Colonials lead and put the league s five-seed up by one point when Kiara Evans forced a steal and lay-in with :7 to play. Spanou answered on the other end and three consecutive free throws by Durojaye and three more by Silaraja gave Robert Morris a six-point lead with 27 seconds to play, essentially icing the game. Each squad hit three more free throws in the final 9 seconds as the Colonials secured the win. The Colonials shot 44.8 percent (26-58) and hit 47. percent (8-7) on three-pointers en route to a season-best 78 points. Long Island cooled off from 45.2 percent in the first half to shoot 8.5 percent (25-65) for the game and was just 26. percent (5-9) from downtown. Robert Morris held a 44-5 advantage on the glass. The most notable difference for the team is in the turnover department, where they averaged 7.0 more per game without her than with her. Durojaye Doubles Up On Career Highs Junior Mary Durojaye set a new career-high for rebounds and tied her career-best output for points against Saint Francis Monday night. The British National U20 Team member corralled 5 rebounds and scored 20 points to record her sixth doubledouble of the season. Tate Ties Steals Record Making her first start of the season, sophomore Jasmine Tate had a remarkable performance. Tate tied the singlgame record for steals with eight. The sophomore had six in the first half before finally tying the mark with her last steal coming :2 before the final buzzer. She added four assists and two rebounds and did not turn the ball over in 8 minutes of action. Chuck s Charms The Charles L. Sewall Center, a.k.a. Robert Morris also got off to its best start in conference play, winning their first seven league games. 60 / 40 Two statistics this season have been nearly dead on indicators of whether Robert Morris had won or lost a game, other than the score holding opponents under 60 points and shooting better than 40 percent. In of 5 wins, the Colonials have kept their opposition under 60 points. They are 2- when giving up more than 60. The Colonials received three first-place votes, marking the sixth consecutive season that they have received a first-place tally in the poll. We don t have any preseason all-conference players, but we re picked second, so I really appreciate the coaches giving us that type of respect, said RMU head women s basketball coach Sal Buscaglia. It might be a little too much respect. We ll just have to see what happens. The defending NEC regular-season champion finished 2-9 overall, including a 7- record in conference play, last season while accepting a berth in the Postseason Women s National Invitation Tournament. Robert Morris has earned berths into national tournaments in four consecutive seasons, beginning with its first NCAA Tournament appearance in Another trip to the Big Dance followed in 2008 before the Colonials accepted an invitation to the Preseason WNIT in fall of Two starters return from last season s 2-win squad - senior guard Kristine Silaraja and junior forward Mary Durojaye - and a total of seven letterwinners. Gone from the squad are 200 NEC Player and Defensive Player of the Year Angela Pace along with Vega Gimeno-Martinez. Buscaglia and associate head coach Charlie Buscaglia have brought in six new players headlined by freshman forward Artemis Spanou and Franziska Worthmann. Spanou, a member of the Greek National Team, was named the most valuable player at the 200 FIBA U-8 European Championships where she averaged 8.5 points and 8. rebounds a game. Durojaye, senior Yohanna Morton, sophomore Anna Gailite and freshman Anna Kavasila are also all members of their respective national teams NEC Preseason Coaches Poll Long Island (6) 2 Robert Morris () Sacred Heart 4 Saint Francis (Pa.)
