10 Colonial Women s Basketball Game Notes - Page 10 O Captain My Captain: With the roster being dominated by upperclassmen, coach Sal Buscaglia has decided to use four first-time captains. Seniors Sugiery Monsac, Psyche Butler, Natasha Sumemrville and Jenna Burkett will have the task of leading the Colonials during the season. Boy Have Things Changed: In a span of just three years Sal Buscaglia has turned the Robert Morris University women s basketball team into a perenial conference power. When Buscaglia arrived at RMU the Colonials had only won seven games the previous three seasons. After suffering through his worst season record-wise as a head coach in , Buscaglia turned his team into a 20-team. After going 20-9 last season, Buscaglia became the fist head coach in the program s history to guide a team to back-to-back 20 win seasons. This Years Recruiting Class: RMU was able to obtain two new additions for the roster this season, Chinata Nesbit and Markesha Smith. Nesbit played two season at Chipola Junior College before signing with the Colonials this season. She averaged 15.5 points and 10.1 rebounds per game as a sophomore at Chipola. Nesbit was also selected to the Kodak All-America Second Team and the NJCAA All-Tournament team. She was ranked 23rd overall in the nation and the fifth best wing forward by the Adidas All-Star Report. Smith is a freshman who played her senior season of high school basketball at Oak Hill Prep where she averaged 16 points and 6 assists per game. As a junior at DW Daniel High School she averaged 20 points, six assists, four rebounds and three steals per game over three years at DW Daniel High School and was named First Team All-Conference her freshman, sophomore and junior season. Smith also, Garnered All-South Carolina First Team honors her sophomore and junior year and was named conference player of the year her junior year. Road to the NCAA Tournament: After finishing with 20 wins each of last two seasons, RMU looks to take the next step and advance to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program s history. RMU returns six seniors in Sugeiry Monsac, Princess Asia Alston, Jenna Burkett, Arlene Mull and Natasha Summerville, along with Psyche Butler (who is a senior academically) for the season. RMU will look to use their leadership to guide them to a NEC Tournament Championship. Of the six seniors, Monsac, Burkett and Mull were all a part of the squad that fell one game short of competing in the big dance. Conference Play: When the NEC schedule came to an end, RMU had three players rank in the conference s top-30 in points per game. Summerville (17.1), Butler (12.9) and Alston (8.8) combined to average 38.8 points per game. The rest off the team averaged a combined 28.9 points per game of the total 67.7 points per game RMU averaged per conference tilt. Cleaning The Glass: Of the Colonials 1,085 rebounds during the season, five players accounted for over 66% of those. Psyche Butler (274), Tess Cooley (195), Natasha Summerville (104), Crystal Ahmed (78) and Princess Asia Alston (65) recorded 716 rebounds over the season. Of the three returning Colonials from that list, Butler, Summerville and Alston tallied 41% of those rebounds (443 total).
