The Colonials travel to Champaign, Ill, to take on the Illinois Fighting Illini in an 8:00 p.m. ET game at State Farm Center Tuesday, Nov. 18. RMU gave the 19th-ranked Iowa Hawkeyes all they could handle in a season-opening loss while the Illini started the year with a seven-point win against IPFW. THE SERIES VS. ILLINOIS The Colonials have never played Illinois. RECORD ROAD TRIP Robert Morris opens the season with five consecutive road games, the most games in program history to start a season. The five-game swing is also the second longest road trip in team history and the first five-game trip since The squad had six consecutive road games. 2 STAMOLAMPROU SETS CAREER HIGH Sophomore guard Anna Niki Stamolamprou set a new career-high with 21 points in the Colonials season-opener against Iowa. The Greek-point two-guard went 8-of-14 from the field and 4-of-9 from long range. She also tied her career-high by collecting seven rebounds. THE ROAD TO THE NCAA TOURNAMENT The Colonials earned an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Northeast Conference Tournament, taking advantage of the top seed they secured by winning the regular season title witha 14-4 record. RMU has won five NEC titles, earning NCAA Tourney berths in 2007, 2008 and A 16-seed last season, the Colonials lost to #1 seed Notre Dame, BRINGING HOME THE HARDWARE Four Colonials were honored with NEC Postseason accolades in Artemis Spanou was the Player of the Year for the second straight season while Sal Buscaglia was the Brenda Reilly Coach of the Year for the third time. Anna Niki Stamolamprou and Cassie Oursler earned spots on the All-Rookie team. TEAM RECORDS FOR HOME WINS The Colonials went 15-4 at home last season, setting a team record for home wins. RMU has won 13 straight games at the Chuck, the longest such win streak in team history. THIRD BEST SCORING SQUAD RMU scored 2,283 points in , the third-most points by a Colonials squad in program history. They averaged 69.2 points per game, fourth in team annals. THREE-NOMENAL Robert Morris hit seven three-pointers in the NCAA Tournament game against Notre Dame, and in the process set a new team record for three-pointers in a season. The Colonials knocked down 203 shots from long-range last year, eclipsing the previous record of 199 set by the and teams. REBOUNDING REVIEW With 1,374 rebounds last year, the Colonials broke the team record for boards by 38. The Colonials +5.9 rebounding margin in was the second-best in team history. The margin is bolstered by four games in which RMU outrebounded its opponent by at least 25 rebounds. JOLIE S SEVEN JARGONS Redshirt senior forward Jolie Olingende is fluent in seven languages. The 6 1 center speaks French, English, Lingala, Kingwandi, Kisango, Kkongo, Munukutoba. French is the offical language of the Congo. Kisango is her mother s native language while Kingwandi is her father s. Lingala is the language of northern Congo and Kkongo was the language spoken where she attended school. Olingende picked up Munukutuba on her own and didn t learn English until she attended school at Arizona Western. She plans on learning Spanish as well when she travels to Spain next year. INTERNATIONAL LOVE The Robert Morris roster once again features members from all over the world. The Colonials 14-player roster features eight international players. Of the six Americans, all come from different states with Maryland, New Jersey, New York and California represented. RMU s imported players hail from Canada, Democratic Republic of the Congo, France, Greece, Italy and Spain. CHUCK S CHARMS The Charles L. Sewall Center, a.k.a. The Chuck, has lent a certain advantage for the Colonials over the past 10 seasons. Since , RobertMorris is (.788) in home games, including an even more impressive (.831) record against Northeast Conference opponents. 20 WIN AGAIN The squad reached the 20-win plateau for the eighth time in school history. Six of those 20-win seasons have come in the 11 seasons that Sal Buscaglia has been at the helm of the program. DIALING LONG DISTANCE... FROM EUROPE The Colonials European born players have accounted for 198 of the team s 203 three-pointers in Anna Niki Stamolamprou had 59, Ashley Ravelli 53 and Rebeca Navarro 44. INSURMOUNTABLE LEAD Robert Morris has never lost a game in which it has held the lead at the end of the game. The Colonials were 22-0 in such situations last season. All-time, RMU is when leading at the end of the second half. The Financier of the American Revolution. He isn t as famous as his friend George Washington, but without Robert Morris, the American colonies bold attempt to throw off British rule never could have succeeded. Born in 1734 in Liverpool, England, Robert Morris sailed to the United States with his father when he was 14 years old. Morris became a partner at the import export firm of Willing & Morris where he made his millions. After, he became the spokesman for opposition to the Stamp Act, smuggled arms for the new American army and navy, signed the Declaration of Independence, secured financing often using his personal credit to fight the Revolutionary War and served as a Pennsylvania state senator. I really appreciate the respect the coaches have shown for our program picking us as the number one team, said 12th year RMU head coach Sal Buscaglia. As all coaches will agree, though, it s where you are in the standings at the end of the season that really counts Robert Morris won both the regular season and tournament titles in 2014, returning to the NCAA Tournament for the third time since They rode two-time NEC Player of the Year Artemis Spanou to last season s title, but this year will be without her services after she graduated from RMU as the all-time leading scorer and rebounder. A plethora of talented returners are in place to help fill the scoring and rebounding void. The biggest question facing the team this season is who will fill the leadership role? Jolie Olingende is the only senior on the roster. But she is still returning to form after a devastating knee injury prior to the regular season stalled the progress of the junior college all-american. She averaged nearly 15 minutes in conference last season while showing flashes of the type of play that made her the Arizona Jr. College Athletic Association Player of the Year in Ashley Ravelli has been the most consistent piece of a three-player junior class, but she must now make the transition to a leadership role. The 2013 NEC Rookie of the Year, Ravelli averaged 8.8 points and shot 31.5 percent from three-point average as a. Lou Mataly has the potential to light up the scoreboard from long range, but injuries in her freshman and sophomore seasons have stunted the growth of her game in the collegiate ranks. Randi Jackson has been burdened with the task of learning how to become and effective college point guard. But it looks as if she is ready to tackle that task. Last year s freshman class provided the team with both depth and talent, highlighted by NEC All-Rookie selections Anna Niki Stamolamprou and Cassie Oursler. 6 SAL BUSCAGLIA Head Coach 12th season at RMU 37th season overall Canisius 1976 Robert Morris University women s basketball coach Sal Buscaglia, now in his 12th season at RMU, began the renaissance of Colonials basketball with his arrival in Since he has taken over, the women s basketball program has played in six national tournaments, won three Northeast Conference championships and earned playoff berths in nine of his 11 seasons. Buscaglia was named the Brenda Reilly NEC Coach of the Year for the third time after leading the Colonials to their fourth regular-season championship under his leadership in The Buffalo-native has posted a record and is second all-time at RMU in victories. He has 676 wins in 36 seasons of coaching, last season eclipsing 400 victories in Division I. He is (.605) in 23 seasons as a Division I coach. Buscaglia returned the Colonials to the top of the NEC mountain in , winning the regular season championship and the tournament title. It was the fourth regular season championship and third tournament title in Buscaglia s reign. The feat earned him NEC Coach of the Year, while RMU earned a plethora of post-season hardware. Artemis Spanou was named the NEC Player of the Year for the second season earning All-NEC honors for the fourth straight season after leading the league in rebounding once again. Under Buscaglia s tutelage, Spanou blossomed into RMU s all-time leader in points and rebounds and owns 10 RMU season or career records. Anna Niki Stamolamprou and Cassie Oursler were also named to the NEC All-Rookie Team, joining a long list of Colonial players to earn honors under Buscaglia. Not only has Coach Sal, as he is respectfully called, turned the program into a perennial NEC power, but a nationally competitive program. The turnaround could not have been more dramatic. His first squad, in , posted a 3-24 record. But given a year to recruit and rebuild, his squad posted a record marking the third-largest turnaround in NCAA history and giving RMU its first 20-win season since the season. Perhaps the biggest piece in the resurgence of the program came to the forefront that season in the form of Sugeiry Monsac. It also earned Buscaglia the Brenda Reilly NEC Coach of the Year award, his first of two such honors during his tenure at RMU. Monsac was a highly-touted recruit sought out by numerous BCS level programs, but when she committed to Coach Sal and RMU, it marked a turnaround. Monsac was named the NEC Player of the Year in and was a two-time All-NEC selection who would score 1,177 points and grab 689 rebounds in just 67 career games. In his fourth season, the team that had gone 1-26 the season before his arrival, earned a berth into the NCAA Tournament for the first time in team history after a victory in the Northeast Conference Championship in That squad finished with a program-record 24 victories to just eight losses and completed the program s resurrection. One year later, Buscaglia and his Colonials repeated the feat. This time around, the squad was led by record-setting threepoint shooting of Sade Logan and the first triple-doubles in team history by NEC Tournament MVP Chinata Nesbit. Coach Sal and his staff put in a dribble-drive motion offense - one of just two teams in women s basketball running the offense - to take advantage of the team s athletically-gifted guards. Logan would tie the NCAA record with 126 three-pointers that season and RMU posted a record. After a mark in an injury-marred season, the squad bounced back by setting team records for regular season wins (22) and conference victories (17) while leading the team to its first outright NEC Regular Season Championship and an eventual Postseason WNIT Tournament. The appearance marked the fourth consecutive season RMU played in a national tournament. Angela Pace was the feature player on that team becoming the first player in league history to earn both Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year. Spanou burst onto the second in when she became the first Robert Morris player to earn NEC Rookie of the Year honors. Spanou and her teammates posted a mark and led the squad back to the NEC semifinals. In , the Colonials went overall and 11-6 in league games, returning for the eighth time in the last nine seasons to the Northeast Conference semifinals. The team earned and invitation and the top seed in Women s Basketball Invitational. It was the fifth time in six seasons that Robert Morris was invited to play in a national tournament. Before Robert Morris, Buscaglia spent five seasons at Manhattan College ( ). In just his second season at Manhattan, Buscaglia led the Lady Jaspers to a 17-win season, marking the fifth most victories in school history, and was recognized as the 24th most improved team in NCAA Division I. In five seasons at Manhattan, Buscaglia compiled a record of 79-65, including a record and NCAA Division I tournament appearance in Buscaglia s Manhattan team received votes in the Top 25 in as the Jaspers claimed the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season and tournament championships. The MAAC championship in 2003 was the first league title in school history. Manhattan s overall record was also the best in school history. In he guided the jaspers to an overall record and was named the Co-Coach of the Year in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. For eight seasons prior to his arrival at Manhattan, Buscaglia was head coach of the University at Buffalo from and led the Bulls to five 20-win campaigns. In its first season in Division I competition in , Buffalo finished with a 23-6 record, which was the 10th highest winning percentage (.793) in Division I that season. The Bulls won East Coast Conference regular season titles in 1992, 1993 and 1994, as well as tournament championships in 1992 and In , Buffalo moved to the Mid-Continent Conference and Buscaglia led the Bulls to a share of the Mid-Con regularseason title in 1995 and an appearance in the conference tournament finals in In each of Buffalo s first three seasons in the Mid-Con, Buscaglia led the Bulls to at least 20 wins. For his efforts at Buffalo, Buscaglia earned New York State Coach of the Year honors in 1992 and Buscaglia started his coaching career at Hilbert Junior College, in Hamburg, New York, where in 12 seasons from he amassed a record of During his tenure at Hilbert, his teams collected 93 straight league wins, eight straight Region Tournament Championships ( ), eight straight regular season conference championships ( ) and eight straight National Tournament appearances ( ). In his team finished in the elite eight. Coach Sal is a member of the Hilbert College Hall of Fame. A native of Buffalo, New York, Buscaglia is a 1976 graduate of Canisius with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business and accounting and in 1989 earned a Master s Degree in physical education, also from Canisius.
