Thus far, the Bulldogs have dominated in the middle two quarters, holding opponents to an average of points in those quarters vs. an average of 17.5 points in the first and fourth quarter respectively. The Bulldogs gave up 39 points to Seton Hall in the first quarter, but held them to 14 in the fourth. Similarly, the Bulldogs allowed UMass 21 points in the first, while restricting the River Hawks to 12 in the final 10 minutes of regulation. The opposite story happened against Cornell, holding them to 15 in the first, but allowing 26 in the fourth. Against Vermont, the Black and Gold prevented the Catamounts from scoring more than seven points in the second quarter, including only one made basket from the floor. In the fourth quarter, Vermont fought to within 10 of the Bulldogs, outscoring them 18-14, but the Bryant lead in the second quarter proved to be too much of a deficit for the Catamounts to claw back from. FROM THREE Against Cornell, Bryant went 5-8 (62.5%) from downtown, led by the efforts of freshman Kierra Palmer, who hit four of her six attempts from three-point land. At UMass Lowell, the Bulldogs shot 9-16 (56.3%) from behind the arc, with five different players hitting from three-point land. Tiersa Winder led the Bulldogs with a trio of made threes, including a key trey in the third quarter against the River Hawks Last season the Bulldogs shot 29.1% from three in their 31 games, finding that even if they were not on from downtown, they could still battle it out under the basket and come out with a win. With the addition of Palmer this season, the Black and Gold may be looking at even greater success from behind the arc. Last season, the team attempted 602 three-pointers, while their opponents were held to 515. Already this season, the Black and Gold have put up 83 threes in three games, finding success on 28 occasions. The Bulldogs have shot a season-best 56.3% from three-point land at UMass Lowell. BOUNDS BY THE POUND One of the Bulldogs biggest strength is their performance on the glass, both offensively and defensively. In the first match of the season, Bryant outrebounded Seton Hall by 15, with two players finishing in double digits. In the fourth quarter alone, the Bulldogs grabbed 10 offensive boards, with senior Breanna Rucker leading the way. Junior Morgan Olander finished the game with 10 total rebounds, while Rucker ripped down 12. Olander has recorded two double-digit rebounding games, while Rucker has managed double-digit rebounds in three of four contests, including a season-high 15 at UMass Lowell. Even the guards are impactful on the glass, with senior shooting guard Tiersa Winder averaging 3.8 and sophomore guard Ivory Bailey with 5.3 per game. The Bulldogs finished as a team with 47 rebounds in their season opener on the road against Seton Hall, 42 in their home opener against Cornell, and a season-high of 50 against Vermont. In their latest match, the Bulldogs outrebounded the River Hawks by 13, including 13 on the offensive glass and 25 defensively. 9 head coach mary burke Mary Burke, the four-time Rhode Island Women s Basketball Coach of the Year ( 07, 08, 13, 14), will enter her 25th season as head coach of the Bryant women s basketball team in In , Burke guided the Bulldogs to their best Division I season to date in which they set records for Division I wins in a season (22), Northeast Conference wins in a season (14), highest finish in NEC standings (t-1st) and the second DI postseason win in Bryant basketball history, with the first appearance coming in Bryant reached the NEC Semifinals for the second time in program history, falling to Robert Morris in both seasons. The Bulldogs also saw two players tabbed NEC major awards, with Breanna Rucker earning NEC Player of the Year and Ivory Bailey taking home NEC Rookie of the Year. In , Burke helped guide the Bulldogs to a overall record and their first ever trip to the Northeast Conference Tournament. Bryant won eight of its final 13 games to clinch the eighth and final spot in the 2013 NEC Tournament, the program s inaugural postseason appearance at the Division I level. Burke also reached an individual milestone, earning her 300th-career victory vs. LIU Brooklyn on Jan. 26, Head Coach Mary Burke 25th season Hometown Cranston, R.I. College Providence College 87...Career record: Burke s All-Time Record NE NE NE NE NE NE NE NE NE NE NE NE NE NE NE NE NE-10 DII Totals (17 seasons) NEC NEC NEC NEC NEC NEC NEC DI Totals (eight seasons) Career (25 seasons) NCAA Tournament 2 ECAC Division II Champions The Bulldogs had a memorable season as they earned 13 DI victories and went 10-8 in the NEC - good for a sixth-place finish in the standings. In the first season eligible for NEC accolades, senior Kelsey O Keefe was named First Team All-NEC and freshman Meredith Soper earned NEC All-Rookie honors. O Keefe also earned one player of the week honor. In the season, the Bulldogs inaugural DI season, they posted the most wins of the four Division I schools in Rhode Island (PC, URI, and Brown). The Bulldogs earned wins over New Hampshire, Colgate, Central Connecticut (twice), Saint Francis, Wagner and Fairleigh Dickinson. Before the transition to Division I, the Bulldogs were among the top teams in the Northeast-10 conference. Under Burke s tutelage, the Bulldogs qualified for the NCAA Tournament four times, including back-to-back appearances in 2004 and 2005, as well as their final appearance in the Division II Tournament in In Bryant s final year in Division II in Burke and her team ended the season overall, posting a mark in Bryant s final season as a member of the Northeast-10 Conference. The season saw the Bulldogs, who were picked to finish ninth in the preseason coaches poll, defeat three nationally ranked teams -- No. 21 Bentley, No. 15 Stonehill and No. 17 Franklin Pierce -- en route to a sixth-place conference finish and seventh-seed NCAA Regional Tournament ranking. It was Bryant s seventh NCAA appearance and first 20-win season since Bryant appeared in the national polls on five occasions in , each time in the Others Receiving Votes category. The 2008 dance was Burke s fourth as a head coach, while the effort marked just the second time she has eclipsed the 20-win clip. Another highlight of Burke s tenure at Bryant came in the season, when the Bulldogs finished the year ranked in the USA Today Division II Coaches Poll Top-25 and advanced to the NCAA Regional Final, where they fell to Northeast-10 foe Merrimack College, finishing the season Burke s rapid climb up the coaching ladder began in 1987 when she joined former Bryant head coach Ralph Tomasso s staff as an assistant with the Bulldogs. She was promoted to head coach, August 1, 1991, becoming only the fourth women s basketball head coach in Bryant history. Burke s success as the Bulldogs leader comes as no surprise, considering the lofty heights she reached as a player at Providence College. A three-time Big East All-Conference selection, Burke was named a District I All-American as a senior. In her four years as a Friar, Burke helped lead her team to an record. During that time, she led the Providence squad to the Big East Championship Game and a bid in the NCAA tournament and also spearheaded the Friars run in the NIT. Burke graduated as the Friars fourth-leading women s scorer (1,672 points) and seventh-leading rebounder (740) of all time. Her 43-point outburst against Miami of Ohio in her final season at Providence set a new school record, etching her name in the record books yet again. Before even attending Providence, Burke had already made a name for herself in Rhode Island. Earning All- State recognition five times at Toll Gate High School - three times in basketball and twice in volleyball - Burke has been honored on two occasions by Words Unlimited, Rhode Island s professional organization of sports publicists and journalists. Burke was named Rhode Island s Schoolgirl Athlete of the Year in 1983 and accepted the organization s highest honor in 1987 when she was named Rhode Island s Female Athlete of the Year. She was also the recipient of the ECAC Award of Valor in Burke was inducted into the New England Basketball Hall of Fame in 2004, and enshrined in the Providence College Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007.
