7 HEAD COACH JANELL JONES Head Coach JANELL JONES 2nd Year at UCSD 46-9 Record Janell Jones begins her second year at UCSD in following a tremendous year with the Tritons in her first season. In her first campaign on the La Jolla campus, Jones guided the Tritons to a 23-5 overall record and a spot in the NCAA Division II West Regional Quarterfinals. Her squad qualified for the postseason after a second place finish in the CCAA, posting a 17-3 record in the highly competitive league. The 23 wins set a new school record for wins at the Division II level while the postseason appearance was only the second one for the Tritons in their D-II history. Along the way Jones had several players earn many prestigious awards including guard Leora Juster who was named the program s first Division II All-American by both the WBCA and Daktronics. She was also named the CCAA Most Valuable Player of the Year, the Daktronics Division II West Region Player of the Year and a Second Team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 selection. Additionally, Michelle Osier was named the CCAA Freshman of the Year and a First Team All-League performer next to Juster. She also earned Second Team All-West Region honors. Hillary Hansen was another All-CCAA performer that also earned First Team ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District 8 accolades. Jones came to UCSD after a seven-year stint at Oklahoma City University, the last five as head women s basketball coach. She was hired by Director of Athletics, Earl W. Edwards, on Thursday, July 28 to replace long time head coach Judy Malone who retired after 29 seasons at the helm. Jones becomes only the fourth head coach in the 35 year history of the program at UCSD. Prior to her arrival in La Jolla, Jones was the winningest coach in OCU history. She was part of four NAIA Division I National Championship teams (two as head coach and two as assistant) and posted an incredible record of (.926). Her squads never finished a season with less than 32 victories. She was responsible for brining Miriam Sy to campus, a player that was selected by the Washtingon Mystics in the 2006 WNBA Draft in early April. In her first season as head coach at OCU ( ), Jones had a year that most people can only dream about. Her team captured its third consecutive NAIA National Championship and set a school record for victories. For her efforts, Jones was named NAIA Coach of the Year.
