ODU won the earlier meeting on its homecourt, 56-40, Jan. 28. This is a unique group of seniors, said GSU head coach Rod Barnes. It s a diverse group, but they ve come together. You always want to send out your seniors in a positive way. Now in his third season at Georgia State, Barnes veteran lineup is headlined by allconference guard Joe Dukes. Dukes, a 6-1 senior from Cuthbert, Ga., is a preseason selection to the All-CAA second team after earning third-team honors a year ago. The dynamic guard averages 12.9 points per game, along with 5.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 1.7 steals per game. He ranks 12th in the CAA in scoring as well as fourth in steals, sixth in assists and 10th in field goal percentage (.417). Johnson, who shares time at the point with Dukes and top backup James Fields, scored a career-best nine points at Feb. 10 at Northeastern. Fields, a 6-3 sophomore, is a strong defender who averages 3.3 ppg and 1.5 rpg. He scored 10 points, his high for a CAA game, Jan. 30 at VCU, and he had seven points and four assists Feb. 13 at Towson. In the post, the Panthers have used a primary rotation of three seniors in 6-10 Xavier Hansbro, 6-7 Trey Hampton and 6-6 Ousman Krubally, but Hansbro has missed the last four games due to injury. In his absence, Krubally has stepped up to contribute 110 ppg and 7.2 rpg over the last five contests, scoring in double figures each time out. On the season, he is the Panthers top rebounder at 5.9 per game (13th in the CAA), along with 6.7 ppg. He has five double-doubles on the season, including 10 points and 10 rebounds FEb. 10 against the Huskies. Hampton averages 8.2 ppg, 5.2 rpg and a team-leading 1.2 blocks per game while ranking ninth in the CAA in free throw percentage at.803. After scoring 19 in the win over JMU, 16 at Northeastern and 14 versus South Carolina State, he is averaging 14.5 points and 6.3 rebounds for the last four games. Hansbro is fourth on the team in scoring at 8.1 ppg, along with 4.2 rpg. Promising freshman post player James Vincent, 6-10, is seeing more time, averaging 2.2 ppg and 2.0 rpg, including a 10-point game versus VCU and a sevenrebound effort versus George Mason On the wing, 6-5 sophomore Jihad Ali has provided a spark lately, beginning with his 22-point outburst in the Panthers Feb. 3 win over George Mason. He added nine points at Northeastern, 10 at Towson and 13 versus James Madison, giving him an average of 10.5 ppg over the last six contests. For the season, he averages 5.4 ppg and 2.7 rpg. Barnes can also turn to 6-7 senior Kevin Lott (2.2 ppg, 1.5 rpg), or 6-4 junior Dante Curry (2.1 ppg). Both have modest averages but have been productive in recent games. On Jan. 20 against UNCW, Lott came off the bench for a seasonhigh 10 points, and he added eight points with two treys at Towson. Curry scored nine along with a key block on a potential game-tying shot late in the game against UNCW, then scored six points against Delaware. Old Dominion, coached by Blaine Taylor, features 6-10 post player Gerald Lee, the preseason choice as CAA Player of the Year who averages 14.2 ppg while shooting 53 percent from the field. The Monarchs are the top defensive team in the CAA, allowing just 56.3 points per game. THE SERIES VS. OLD DOMINION Old Dominion holds an 11-2 lead in the series with Georgia State, including an 8-1 advantage since the Panthers joined the CAA in The Monarchs won the earlier meeting this season, on Jan. 28 at ODU. Joe Dukes and Trae Goldston led the Panthers with 11 points each, but the much taller Monarchs outrebounded Georgia State, 40-23, and GSU managed to shoot just 35 percent from the field. Gerald Lee paced ODU with 16 points. Last season, the two schools split their meetings as Georgia State earned its first CAA win over the Monarchs with a decision on Jan. 3, 2009 at the GSU Sports Arena. Trae Goldston s three-pointer with just 11 seconds left lifted the Panthers to victory. After ODU had taken a two-point lead with 37 seconds left, Goldston took a pass from Joe Dukes and hit from the right wing. Dukes and Xavier Hansbro led the Panthers with 11 points for the game. ODU won the return affair, 73-56, just 10 days later in Norfolk, Va. The two schools met four times in five years from through , then did not play again until Georgia State joined the CAA. Georgia State and Old Dominion are both former members of the Sun Belt Conference, but were not in the league at the same time. SENIOR NIGHT Six Georgia State seniors will be honored before the Old Dominion game as they play their final home game at the GSU Sports Arena. The group includes three four-year Panthers in Trae Goldston, Ousman Krubally and Kevin Lott, and three transfers who played two seasons at GSU in Joe Dukes, Trey Hampton and Xavier Hansbro.

3 Georgia State Basketball Notes, Page 3 HEAD COACH ROD BARNES A new era in Georgia State basketball is underway with former Naismith National Coach of the Year Rod Barnes leading the Panther program. In his first two years in Atlanta, Barnes brought renewed energy and interest to the Georgia State program while laying the groundwork for future success. Now in his third season at the helm, Barnes looks for his Panthers to build on their strong finish in , when they won five of their final seven games. GSU s 8-10 record in the Colonial Athletic Association and eighth-place finish represent its best showing since joining the league four years ago. Barnes, who spent eight years as the head coach at Mississippi, is an 18-year veteran of college coaching and was an assistant coach in at Oklahoma. He was honored as the Naismith Coach of the Year as well as Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year in , when he led Ole Miss to its most successful season ever. His squad set a school-record for wins with a 27-8 record, advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the only time in school history and achieved a final national ranking of No. 9. A former All-Southeastern Conference player at Ole Miss, Barnes is the only person to earn All-SEC honors as a player and then be named SEC Coach of the Year. Barnes compiled a record in eight seasons at Ole Miss ( ), guiding the Rebels to four postseason bids, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Barnes first Ole Miss squad recorded the first NCAA Tournament win in school history with a 1999 first-round victory over Villanova. Two years later, the Rebels picked up NCAA Tournament victories over Iona and Notre Dame to reach the Sweet 16. He also spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Ole Miss under Rob Evans before being elevated to head coach on April 9, In addition to coaching the only three NCAA Tournament victories in school history, Barnes was part of five of the six NCAA appearances in Ole Miss annals as head or assistant coach. A native of Satartia, Miss., and 1988 graduate of Ole Miss, Barnes, 44, began his career as an assistant coach at Livingston for three years before returning to his alma mater in Rod Barnes as a Head Coach Mississippi (NCAA 2nd round) Mississippi (NIT 2nd round) Mississippi (NCAA Sweet 16) Mississippi (NCAA) Mississippi Mississippi Mississippi Mississippi Total, Mississippi Georgia State Georgia State Georgia State Total, Georgia State Career Record Georgia State s top five scorers are seniors, and the six-man class accounts for 76 percent of the Panthers points, 70 percent of their rebounds and 67 percent of the team s assists. DUKES BACK ON TRACK Despite struggling with a nagging back injury, Joe Dukes turned in one of the best games of his career with 25 points--just one off his career high--in last week s win over James Madison. His biggest points came on a falling-down three-pointer with the shot clock running down that put the Panthers ahead by five with two minutes to go. Then he hit three free throws in the final 31 seconds to seal the win. GOLDSTON HITS CENTURY MARK With 12 points against Towson, Trae Goldston became the 16th player in Georgia State history to reach the 1,000-point mark. He now has 1,025 points, good for 14th place on the Panthers career scoring list. Goldston, who stands second in GSU history with 193 career threepointers, is also approaching another milestone. With 119 career games, he is second in school annals, just one behind Rashad Chase (120). ALI COMES ALIVE Sophomore Jihad Ali poured in 22 points to lead Georgia State s over first-place George Mason (Feb. 3), including the gamewining three-pointer with 42 seconds left. He went 9-for-13 from the field to easily eclipse his previous high of 12 points, set at Northeastern in , and he also grabbed six rebounds. Ali s first trey of the game gave the Panthers a lead with 4:28 to play, but Mason answered with three straight layups to move ahead with 3:23 left. Joe Dukes made a pair of free throws to pull GSU within two, and two possessions later, Dukes fed Ali in the corner, and the Atlanta native drained the trey for a lead. Ousman Krubally garnered two defensive rebounds and converted both ends of a one-andone with 20 seconds left to seal the victory. Ali is the fifth different Panther to top the 20-point mark this season, along with Joe Dukes, Trae Goldston, Trey Hampton and Xavier Hansbro. Beginning with that game, Ali has seen increased playing time and is averaging 10.5 ppg for his last six contests, compared with season average of 5.4 ppg. HAMPTON INCREASES PRODUCTIVITY Senior Trey Hampton is playing the best basketball of his career. Over the last 18 games, the rugged post player is averaging 10.6 points and 5.1 rebounds. He has been even better the last four games, averaging 14.5 ppg and 6.3 rpg, including 19 points in last Tuesday s win over James Madison, 16 Feb. 10 at Northeastern and 14 versus South Carolina State. Hampton had a double-double in the Jan. 20 win over UNC Wilmington with 17 points and 10 rebounds and the followed with 11 points at Delaware. The Hoover, Ala., native scored a career-best 22 points on 9-for-10 shooting in the Jan. 2 win over Towson. He also had four rebounds and four blocked shots. He scored 14 points in the second half, including several crucial baskets as well as a key steal late in the game as the Panthers gutted out the victory. One game earlier, Hampton was 8-for-8 from the field in the Panthers Dec. 22 victory over Georgia Southern, in which he notched 16 points, seven rebounds and four blocks. He began this stretch with 11 points, six rebounds and two blocks on Dec. 19 vs. Eastern Michigan.

Over his career, approximately half of his rebounds are offensive. He has scored in double figures in five straight games, averaging 11.0 points and 7.3 rebounds in that stretch. The slender, 6-6 senior opened the season with his first career double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds against NC State. He also turned in double-double efforts against IUPUI (11 pts-13 rebs), James Madison (10 pts-11 rebs), Delaware (career-high 16 pts, 11 rebs) and Northeastern (10 pts, 10 rebs). This season he has increased his scoring, averaging 6.7 ppg with 10 doublefigure scoring efforts. His career field goal percentage is.550. HOME WINNING STREAK WAS THIRD-LONGEST AT GSU Georgia State s loss to Drexel on Jan. 4 snapped an eight-game winning streak at the Panthers on-campus home. The streak included wins over CAA foes Delaware, UNC Wilmington, Hofstra and Towson. That stretch is the third-longest Sports Arena winning streak in school history. Under Lefty Driesell, the Panthers won 25 straight games at the Sports Arena from Feb. 24, 2000 through Dec. 12, Driesell s program also won nine straight from Jan. 5, 1998 through Nov. 21, GOLDSTON NAMED CAA PLAYER OF THE WEEK Senior guard Trae Goldston was named Colonial Athletic Association Player of the Week on Dec. 28, 2009 for his 28-point performance in the Panthers Dec. 22 win over Georgia Southern. The honor is the second for Goldston, who was also tabbed the league s Player of the Week last Feb. 16 following back-to-back 20-point games against Towson and UNC Wilmington. In the Panthers only action of the week, the 6-0 Goldston poured in a career-high 28 points to lead a 20-point victory over Georgia Southern. He nailed six threepointers, going 6-for-11 from beyond the arc and 11-of-16 overall. HOT SHOOTING VS. GEORGIA SOUTHERN Georgia State turned in its best offensive effort of the season, and perhaps its best in three seasons under head coach Rod Barnes, in its victory over Georgia Southern (Dec. 22). The Panthers shot 62.1 percent from the field, their best figure since a 62.2 percent effort versus Louisiana Lafayette on Nov. 29, Georgia State also achieved season highs with 20 assists (on 36 field goals) and eight threepointers while outrebounding the Eagles, GOLDSTON IS GOLDEN AGAINST EAGLES... AGAIN Senior guard Trae Goldston totalled 50 points in back-to-back games against the Eastern Michigan Eagles (22 points) and the Georgia Southern Eagles (career-high 28 points). Against Eastern Michigan, Goldston went 5-for-8 from beyond the arc. He scored 15 points in the second half on four treys and an old-fashioned three-point play as the Panthers erased a seven-point deficit in the final eight minutes. His final triple put GSU ahead, 62-60, with 2:54 to play. Goldston s efforts against EMU and Georgia Southern give him 10 career games of at least 20 points and 25 with 15 or more points. SCHEDULE SPURTS Georgia State opened the season by playing nine of its first 11 games away from home. That was followed by a stretch of five out of six at home, then four out of six, including three straight, on the road. Now, after two on the road last week, the Panthers play three straight at home before finishing the regular season at Hofstra. The Panthers season-opening road stretch included a grueling segment that saw the Panthers play five away games in seven days. The Panthers were in Daytona Beach, Fla., for the Glenn Wilkes Classic from Nov , and then participated in South Alabama Thanksgiving Tournament, Nov in Mobile, Ala. Georgia State

He is enrolled in classes toward a second degree for the spring semester. Hampton is one of six seniors on this year s team. The other five seniors are all scheduled to graduate this spring. JOHNSON STEPS IN Marques Johnson, a transfer from NC State, has stepped into the starting lineup at point guard. Johnson made his first start in a Georgia State uniform Dec. 5 against James Madison. The 6-5 point guard played 37 minutes, contributing four points, three assists and three steals while effectively running the team. Johnson s presence allows all-caa guard Joe Dukes to play off the ball to capitalize on his scoring ability. In Georgia State s one-point win over Eastern Michigan, he hit a foul line jumper with 57 seconds left--his only points of the game--to give the Panthers the lead for good. Then he handed out a career-best seven assists in GSU s win over Georgia Southern. Other top efforts for Johnson include a career-high nine points against Northeastern (Feb. 10) and a career-best six steals at VCU (Jan. 30). CAREER HIGH FOR DUKES Joe Dukes scored a career-high 26 points in the Panthers loss at South Alabama. The 6-1 senior hit 12 of 19 shots from the field while contributing six rebounds, three assists and two steals. Dukes previous high was 24 points, set in last year s CAA Championships versus VCU. Dukes has topped the 20-point mark six times this season, most recently with a 25- point outing against James Madison. He also scored 22 at Florida State. SCHOOL RECORD DEFENSIVE EFFORT Georgia State turned in perhaps the top defensive effort in school annals in a victory over Howard at the Glenn Wilkes Classic. The Panthers set a school-record for fewest points allowed. The previous low by a GSU opponent was 40 points by Jacksonville State on Feb. 11, Georgia State held the Bison to just 25.3 percent shooting from the field with just 11 field goals for the game. GSU S FEWEST POINTS ALLOWED UNDER ROD BARNES 33 vs. Howard ( ) 41 vs. Delaware (CAA Tournament, ) 44 at James Madison ( ) 46 at UNC Wilmington ( ) 46 Towson ( ) THREE EARLY SIGNEES Georgia State has signed three players in the November early signing period. All three are from the state of Georgia, including Atlanta-area guards DeVonta White and Javonte Maynor and Augusta forward Harold Doby. White and Maynor were named to the preseason All-Metro team by the Atlanta Tipoff Club. Harold Doby Javonte Maynor DeVonta White F, 6-6, Augusta, Ga., Oldsmar Christian (Fla.) G, 6-1, Snellville, Ga., South Gwinnett HS G, 5-11, Roswell, Ga., Centennial HS X MARKS THE SPOT Senior forward Xavier Hansbro scored a career-high 21 points to lead Georgia State to a victory over Utah Valley in the first round of the South Alabama Thanksgiving Tournament. He scored nine straight points on two layups and five free throws in the Panthers pivotal second-half run that turned a one-point game into a lead. He also had seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

6 Georgia State Basketball Notes, Page 6 Hansbro went to the free throw line 17 times in the game, just one shy of the Georgia State record. The only Panther with more free throw attempts in a game was Ron Ricketts nearly 40 years ago; he had 18 attempts vs. Southwestern Memphis on Jan. 20, DUKES TABBED TO PRESEASON ALL-CAA TEAM Senior guard Joe Dukes was selected to the preseason all- Colonial Athletic Association second team, selected by media, head coaches and sports information directors and announced at the league s annual media day. Last season, the 6-1 native of Cuthbert, Ga., made an immediate impact in his first season with the Panthers after transferring from Wake Forest and earned third-team all-caa honors. He ranked in the Top 15 in the league in scoring (12.8 ppg, 14th), assists (4.3 apg, 5th), steals (1.7 spg, 5th) and FG% (8th,.439). He was also the team s second-leading rebounder at 4.7 per game. THREE GAME-WINNING TREYS FOR TRAE Junior guard Trae Goldston hit two game-winning threepointers last season and three in his career. All three have come at the Georgia State Sports Arena. Most recent was his winning trey against UNC Wilmington on Feb. 14, 2009, which came with just five seconds left. With the score tied, he took a feed from Joe Dukes and nailed a trey from the corner with just five seconds left to lift Georgia State to the victory. On Jan. 3, 2009, Goldston s three with just 11 seconds left gave Georgia State a victory over Old Dominion. After ODU had taken a two-point lead with 37 seconds left, Goldston took a pass from Dukes and hit from the right wing. On Feb. 16, 2008 against Northeastern, Goldston nailed a trey with 1.5 seconds left to give the Panthers a victory.
