3 HEAD COACH ROD BARNES Rod Barnes, former Naismith National Coach of the Year, enters his fourth season as the Georgia State University head coach In his first three years in Atlanta, Barnes brought renewed energy and interest to the Georgia State program while laying the groundwork for future success with recruiting and an emphasis on work ethic and fundamentals. The Panthers have performed extremely well in the classroom since Barnes arrival, as all ten seniors who have completed their eligibility have graduated, while an 11th, Marques Johnson, has already graduated entering his senior year. Barnes, who spent eight years as the head coach at Mississippi, is an 18year veteran of college coaching and was an assistant coach in at Oklahoma. He was honored as the Naismith Coach of the Year as well as Southeastern Conference Coach of the Year in , when he led Ole Miss to its most successful season ever. His squad set a schoolrecord for wins with a 278 record, advanced to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the only time in school history and achieved a final national ranking of No. 9. A former AllSoutheastern Conference player at Ole Miss, Barnes is the only person to earn AllSEC honors as a player and then be named SEC Coach of the Year. Barnes compiled a record in eight seasons at Ole Miss (199806), guiding the Rebels to four postseason bids, including three trips to the NCAA Tournament. Barnes first Ole Miss squad recorded the first NCAA Tournament win in school history with a 1999 firstround victory over Villanova. Two years later, the Rebels picked up NCAA Tournament victories over Iona and Notre Dame to reach the Sweet 16. He also spent five seasons as an assistant coach at Ole Miss under Rob Evans before being elevated to head coach on April 9, In addition to coaching the only three NCAA Tournament victories in school history, Barnes was part of five of the six NCAA appearances in Ole Miss annals as head or assistant coach. A native of Satartia, Miss., and 1988 graduate of Ole Miss, Barnes, 44, began his career as an assistant coach at Livingston for three years before returning to his alma mater in Rod Barnes as a Head Coach Mississippi (NCAA 2nd round) Mississippi (NIT 2nd round) Mississippi (NCAA Sweet 16) Mississippi (NCAA) Mississippi Mississippi Mississippi Mississippi Total, Mississippi Georgia State Georgia State Georgia State Georgia State...21 Total, Georgia State Career Record seconds left. Rory Fannon hit a jumper at the buzzer for Utah Valley, sending Georgia State to the locker room with a 3329 lead. The Panthers have won six of eight at home dating back to last season. DOBY S DEBUT Freshman Harold Doby made quite an impression in his first game with the Panthers. The Augusta native came off the bench to score 19 points and pull down five rebounds in 30 minutes of action against McNeese State. The 19 points were the most for a freshman in their debut in the last 20 years. He finished the game shooting 7of10 from the floor and 5of7 from the free throw line. DANTE S INFERNO Making his season debut, senior Dante Curry came off the bench to score 15 points on 5of8 from threepoint range, to help lead the Panthers to an 8070 win over former conference rival Troy. More impressive was the fact that he played just 13 minutes, but sparked the Panthers to their top offensive output of the early season. BAHAMAS TRIP Georgia State s season got off to an early start as the Panthers took an offseason international trip for the first time in school history. GSU travelled to the Bahamas from Aug and played three games against local teams in Nassau, winning all three contests. Jihad Ali scored in double figures in each contest, averaging 13 points. Harold Doby averaged 10 points and seven rebounds per game, while Josh Micheaux averaged four steals. Brandon McGee had a rare 2020 game with 22 points and 21 rebounds in the finale. MAKING THE GRADE The Georgia State basketball team has excelled in the classroom under head coach Rod Barnes. In Barnes first three seasons, all 10 seniors have graduated, and one of this year s seniors, Marques Johnson, has already earned his degree. Barnes program achieved a recordsetting performance last spring, earning its highest ever semester grade point average at 2.96, which raised the team s cumulative GPA to 2.76, also an alltime high under Barnes. The Panthers have posted a GPA of 2.75 or better for four straight semesters. Last season, Jihad Ali became the first Panther to earn a selection to the Colonial Athletic Association AllAcademic team. Ali (2008 & 2010), Ousman Krubally (2009), Kevin Lott (2009 & 2010), Trae Goldson (2010), James Fields (2010) and Daniel Brown (2010) have each earned the CAA Commissioner s Academic Award under Barnes. 453 AND COUNTING Georgia State has made at least one threepoint field goal in 453 straight regular season games, dating back to the season. The last team to hold the Panthers without a trey was Stetson on Feb. 18, 1995.

26 Game 1: Nov. 16, 2010, 7 p.m. MCNEESE STATE 68, GEORGIA STATE 62 Burton Coliseum Lake Charles, La. Despite 19 points from freshman Harold Doby in his collegiate debut, Georgia State opened the season with a 6862 loss at McNeese State in Burton Memorial Coliseum. Doby, a native of Augusta, Ga., came off the bench to play 30 minutes, shooting 7of10 from the field and knocking down 5of7 from the line. He finished the game with five rebounds and a pair of steals. After scoring 23 points in the first half for the Cowboys, the Panthers held Deigo Kapelan to just two second half points, but 18 total Panther turnovers proved to be the difference. McNeese State scored 19 points off of those turnovers, seven of which came in the second half. Trailing by as many as nine in the first half and by six early in the second half, freshman Javonte Maynor hit backtoback threepointers with 15:34 remaining to tie the score at 40. Maynor, who made the start in his debut, was limited in the first half after picking up two fouls 11 seconds apart, each before the first media timeout. Maynor finished the game playing 17 minutes, scoring six points and pulling down three rebounds. Junior Eric Buckner, making his first appearance in a Panther uniform scored six points on 3of6 shooting, pulling down a gamehigh 12 rebounds. Buckner added all three GSU block shots in a teamhigh 32 minutes. Late in the second half, Doby s made a layup with 2:49 remaining to cut the Cowboys lead to three, but that was as close as the Panthers would get. Junior James Fields finished the game with 11 points, finishing 7of10 from the free throw line. The Panthers hit just 59.3% from the free throw line, making just 16of27 shots. McNeese State made their free throws down the stretch, hitting just over 74 percent from the line for the game, going 23of31. The Panthers finished the game committing 24 total fouls. Patrick Richard, an allsouthland Conference preseason selection, led the Cowboys at the line, going 10of12, finishing the game with 17 points. Curry scored a gamehigh 15 points on five treys, and Maynor, the rookie from South Gwinnett High, also scored 15 with four treys. Senior Marques Johnson and junior Jihad Ali also reached double figures for the Panthers (11) with 10 points each. Harold Doby led GSU on the boards with 11 rebounds, along with six points. Georgia State s 11 threepointers, which came on 23 attempts, are the most by the Panthers since and their second highest total under head coach Rod Barnes. Levan Patsatsia scored 22 points on 8of12 shooting to lead Troy (12). The Trojans dropped their second in a row after winning their season opener. Will Weathers added 14 points, four rebounds and four assists while making 8of12 free throws. In a first half that featured seven lead changes, the Panthers trailed 2423 with six minutes to play in the period before closing the half on a 145 run. A jumper by Maynor gave GSU the lead for good at 2524, and Curry hit a pair of treys down the stretch, including one with three seconds left to send the Panthers into the locker room with a 3729 advantage. After Troy scored the first bucket of the second half to pull within 3729, Georgia State exploded for four straight threepointers, three in a row by Maynor and then one by Curry to push its lead to 4931 with 15 minutes to play. From there, the Panthers maintained a doubledigit advantage the rest of the way. The Panthers were efficient on offense, connecting on 48 percent from the field and collecting 18 assists on 27 baskets. The Panthers will play five of their next six games at home, with the lone trip to face Hampton in Virginia. State has won 5of7 at home dating back to the end of last season. Eric Buckner scored 15 points and Brandon McGee and Marques Johnson added 12 points each as Georgia State won its second straight game with a 6956 victory over Utah Valley on Tuesday at the GSU Sports Arena. Buckner, the 610 junior college transfer, went 5for6 from the field and 5for5 from the free throw line. He also grabbed seven rebounds and blocked three shots to lead a solid defensive effort for the Panthers (21). Eric did a really good job, especially at the free throw line, said GSU head coach Rod Barnes. He had been struggling at the line, but he has been working at it, and tonight it showed. Georgia State led 3734 early in the second half when Mc Gee scored eight straight points with a pair of threepointers sandwiched around a layup to push the GSU lead to 4537 with 11 minutes left. With the Panthers still holding just a sixpoint lead at with seven minutes to go, freshman Devonta White, who finished with 10 points, nailed a threepointer and then Buckner completed a threepoint play that put GSU ahead, 5848, with 6:35 to play. From there, GSU maintained its doubledigit lead the rest of the way. Georgia State shot 44 percent from the field, including 6for14 from threepoint range, forced 20 Utah Valley turnovers and outrebounded the Wolverines, 3620, including 16 offensive rebounds. We had some guys really go to the glass tonight, and that was one of the differences in the game, said Barnes. Holton Hunsaker scored 12 points to lead Utah Valley (03). With the game tied at 2727 late in the first half, GSU scored six straight points, including Javonte Maynor s threepointer that put the Panthers ahead 3327 with 29 seconds left.
