The Panthers have won fouroffive from the Eagles, including a 20point win in Atlanta last season. Georgia State (57) has not played since last Saturday, a tough 6560 loss to Rhode Island, the Panthers third loss in a row. Georgia Southern (57) split a pair of games last weekend, defeating Mississippi Valley State and falling to North Florida as part of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic. Georgia State s three losses have come by a total of eight points, including one and twopoint defeats to Troy and Southern Miss. The Panthers have also won their fair share of close games already this season. Georgia State defeated Tennessee State on a halfcourt buzzerbeater by Rashaad Richardson and then a night later, survived a twopoint victory over South Alabama as a part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. Less than two weeks later, Richardson provided the heroics again hitting a threepointer with less than three seconds remaining to give GSU a comefrombehind win over Liberty. We are a young team and these are some of the growing pains that you have to go through, commented head coach Ron Hunter. Our team is playing hard and leaving everything out on the court and that is all that you can ask for. Our team was winning the close games early in the season. Unfortunately, those games are going against us right now. Hopefully we can finish out the nonconference portion of our schedule with a positive and get ready to face our final season in the CAA. White was one of just three point guards in the CAA to be named to the watch list. White is second on the team in scoring, averaging 14.7 points per game, 11th in the CAA, and minutes, 36.2 per contest, second in the league. One of three team captains, White is also averaging 2.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game, tops in the CAA. The junior, who missed 10 games during his freshman season due to an injury, is just 282 points away from becoming the 17th Panther with 1,000 career points. He is on pace to eclipse that mark by the end of the year, needing to average 14.8 points per game in the remaining regular season contests. R.J. Hunter, the only son of head coach Ron Hunter, leads all CAA freshmen in scoring and rebounding. He was named CAA Rookie of the Week on Monday following a pair of 20plus point performances against Southern Miss and Rhode Island. Hunter is averaging a teamhigh 15.6 points, eighth in the CAA, and 5.9 rebounds per game. He is also collecting 2.2 threepointers per game, third best in the league and shooting 35.1 percent from beyond the arc, seventh in the conference. Hunter is also among the CAA leaders in free throw percentage, steals blocked shots and defensive rebounds. Redshirtjunior Manny Atkins enters Saturday s contest after a 14point, ninerebound effort against Rhode Island. The Virginia Tech transfer has scored 126 points in his last eight games, a 15.8 points per game average. Atkins has missed three doubledoubles this season by just one rebound and another two doubledoubles by just two rebounds. From nearby Tucker, Ga., Atkins is averaging 13.2 points and 6.5 rebounds per game this season, while shooting 77.8 percent from the free throw line, eighth best in the CAA. He is third in the CAA in threepoint field goal percentage, hitting 41.7 percent from beyond the arc. He is also eighth in the CAA making 1.7 threepointers per game. Georgia Southern is led by Eric Ferguson who is averaging 14.2 points and 7.5 rebounds per game. C.J. Reed and Tre Bussey are also averaging in double figures for a squad averaging 59.7 points per game. This will mark the 45th meeting between the two schools who were conference foes in the Trans America Athletic Conference (now Atlantic Sun). The Eagles lead the series 3113, but the two schools have played just three times since 1996, all three coming in the last three years. Following Saturday s contest, Georgia State will open Colonial Athletic Association play on Wednesday facing preseason favorite Drexel in the Sports Arena at 7 p.m. HOME SWEET HOME When coach Ron Hunter took over the Panthers, one of the first things he proclaimed was that the GSU Sports Arena would become one of the toughest places in the country. So far, he has been correct. The Panthers are 176 in the comfy confines in his oneplus seasons. In his first season, Hunter s Panthers won 10straight home games and finished the season 133 in the GSU Sports Arena. YOUNG AND COACHING LONG With his 300th win earlier this season at Liberty, coach Ron Hunter joined an elite group of young coaches. He won his 300 in just his 535th game coaching. Hunter will turn 49 on April 7, The next milestone will be his 350th win when he will be included on a list that includes some of the following. Youngest Coaches with 350 D1 Wins Entering Season Billy Donovan, Florida, 421 (May 30, 1965) Steve Alford, New Mexico, 356 (Nov. 23, 1964) Herb Sendek, Arizona State, 352 (Feb. 22, 1963) Bill Self, Kansas, 476 (Dec. 27, 1962) Jay Wright, Villanova, 359 (Dec. 24, 1961) Kevin Stallings, Vanderbilt, 384 (Oct. 1, 1960)

3 Georgia State Men s Basketball Notes (page 3) NEW AND IMPROVED SCHEDULE Building his first schedule for Georgia State, head coach Ron Hunter wanted to test his team early, knowing that the squad will face a very difficult Colonial Athletic Association schedule in January and February. The Panthers have played three teams that qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2012, including opening at No. 8 (ESPN) Duke followed by BYU. The Panthers will also hosted Southern Miss. Georgia State already topped future Sun Belt foe South Alabama, 7573 as the Jaguars were receiving votes in the ESPN Coaches poll at the time. Georgia State s strength of schedule reached as high as 19th earlier this season. MOVING ON UP... This will mark Georgia State s final season in the Colonial Athletic Association. As of July 1, 2013, the Panthers will join the highlycompetitive Sun Belt Conference, led by new Commissioner Karl Benson. Due to a 12year old CAA rule, the Panthers, along with Old Dominion which is moving to Conference USA, will not be eligible for the CAA Tournament in March. However, Georgia State is eligible for all postseason tournaments, including the NCAA and NIT. WHITE NAMED TO TOP LIST Junior point guard and captain Devonta White was named to the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame on Dec. 20, the second year in a row a Panther has been named to the list. Before the season, White picked up a pair of preseason honors, being named to the AllCAA Preseason Second Team and College Sports Madness AllCAA Third Team. Last season, James Fields was named to the same list as he finished his career playing the second most games in school history. A NEW ERA OF GSU BASKETBALL After being named the 15th head coach of Georgia State on March 21, 2011, Ron Hunter set out to change the culture of Panther basketball and he did that in his first year. Compiling a 2212 record, Hunter won the second most games in school history, only behind the 29 wins of Charles Lefty Driesell during the season that ended in the NCAA Tournament. Hunter s squad also put together an 11game winning streak, capped with wins over CAA preseason favorite Drexel and 2011 Final Four squad VCU. The year ended with the Panthers returning to postseason play and earning the school s secondever postseason victory, a 7443 thumping of Tennessee Tech to open the CollegeInsider. com Postseason Tournament. THE SERIES WITH GEORGIA SOUTHERN Georgia Southern leads the alltime series with Georgia State 3113, however, the Panthers have won four of the last five matchups. This will mark the fourth staright season the teams have met, however, before the current streak, the two squads had not met since Last season, James Fields scored a careerhigh 18 points to lead Georgia State to its schoolrecord ninth straight victory in dominating fashion, Devonta White added 17 points and four steals, and three other Panthers were in double figures, including Eric Buckner with 13 points, eight rebounds and two blocks. THIRD TIMES A CHARM Freshman R.J. Hunter is only two months into his collegiate career and he has already earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors three times this year. Hunter has equalled the total number of CAA Rookie of the Week honors earned by Georgia State in the last seven years since joining the league. His latest honor game on Dec. 24 after averaging 23.5 points and 5.0 rebounds in two games for GSU against Southern Miss and Rhode Island. He earned his first honor in his first collegiate game collecting a doubledouble of 14 points and 10 rebounds in the Panthers loss to No. 8 Duke at Cameron Indoor Stadium. He earned the award again on Nov. 26 after leading the Panthers to threestraight wins as part of the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. He scored a seasonhigh 25 points to cap the week against South Alabama. BLOCK PARTY Senior James Vincent tied the school record with nine blocked shots against Monmouth on Nov. 19. Nicknamed Oak, the 610 big fella tied the record of Sylvestor Morgan that was set against Mercer on Jan. 23, He currently has 27 blocks this season, a 2.3 per game average, tops in the CAA. 4 Georgia State Men s Basketball Notes (page 4) CLIMBING THE MOUNTAIN Senior James Vincent is quickly moving up the school s alltime blocked shots list. Despite being outside the top ten entering the year, he is already moved up to sixth with 27 blocked shots this season. BLOCKED SHOTS CAREER The schoolrecord of 167 was set by Eric Buckner just last year. He moved ahead of Sylvestor Morgan with three blocks at Troy and is now 12 behind Deven Dickerson for fifth in school history. FATHER & SON For the first time in R.J. Hunter s career, his father will be coaching him on the sidelines. Although R.J. spent plenty of time watching his dad coach while at IUPUI for 17 years, the youngest Hunter was never coached by dad Ron at any level. The duo is one of just seven pairs of father and son pairs in the NCAA this year. The group includes: Steve & Kory Alford New Mexico Jim & Billy Baron Canisius Ron & R.J. Hunter Georgia State Greg & Doug McDermott Creighton Ray & Ray McCallum Detroit Dale & Ethan Layer Liberty Todd & Blake Bozeman Morgan State FROM WAY DOWNTOWN Freshman R.J. Hunter got things going quickly against Southern Miss, hitting three threepointers before the first media timeout enroute to hitting 6of12 from beyond the arc, just one shy of entering the school s record books. Hunter scored 20 points in the first half and finished with 24, shooting 8of16 from the floor and pulling down four rebounds. He earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors for his effort. Eric Buckner (2) Zavian Smith (4) Nate Williams (3) Torquin Gresham (3) Deven Dickerson (4) James Vincent present Sylvester Morgan (2) Trello Galloway (2) Chris Collier (2) 71 Redshirtjunior Manny Atkins has had a very special season already this year, but a rebound here or there could make it even more special. Atkins has missed a doubledouble three times already this season by just one rebound, to go along with two more games that he missed by two rebounds. IF he had secured all of those doubledoubles, he would be tied for 19th in the country in the lastest NCAA rankings. IF THEY RE FREE Devonta White entered the season having made 17straight free throws, trumping his streak of 16 consecutive made free throws which came to an end against Old Dominion on Feb. 22. He pushed the streak to 20 straight by making his first three free throws at Duke in the opening game of the season. Unfortunately, he missed his fourth opportunity ending the streak as the fourth longest in school history. The school record is 23 straight made by Nate Williams from Jan. 13Feb. 12, GOING BAREFOOT Coach Ron Hunter will coach his sixth annual barefoot game in support of Samaritan s Feet against William & Mary in 2013 on Jan. 12 at the GSU Sports Arena. Last year, his first with the Panthers, GSU earned a 7561 victory over UNCW while wearing orange jerseys to help raise awareness for the cause. Hunter has coached a game in his bare feet in each of the last five seasons in support of Samaritan s Feet, an organization that provides shoes for underprivileged children around the world. MOST IMPROVED Georgia State finished the season among the most improved in the country. The Panthers finished plus10 in wins, concluding with the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament. The Panthers finished the season STEALIN THE SHOW Georgia State swiped 315 steals during the season, the second most in school history. The school record of 351 was set during the season, a season that ended in the NCAA Tournament. The Panthers had four players with 50 or more steals and all four players ranked among the top 12 in the CAA in steals per game. This season, the Panthers have 101 steals in just the first 12 games of the season, including a seasonhigh 14 against Louisiana Tech and 13 at BYU. GSU ranks 82nd in the nation as of Monday with 8.4 steals per game. FREQUENT FLYERS With only a pair of games on the schedule in which the Panthers can take a bus, Georgia State will add up the frequent flyer miles again during the season. As the crow flies, Georgia State will travel 20,750 roundtrip miles during the regular season. Georgia State traveled to Utah for the second straight season, a short 1,884mile venture oneway. The Panthers faced BYU in Provo on Nov. 13 to open the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic. The team s shortest trip is to Troy, Ala. (182 miles oneway) to face sotobe Sun Belt Conference foe Troy. State will make nine trips along the east coast once CAA play gets underway, the shortest being 415 miles oneway to Wilmington, N.C. to face the Seahawks. 528 AND COUNTING Georgia State has made at least one threepoint field goal in 528 straight games, dating back to the season. 6 Georgia State Men s Basketball Notes (page 6) HEAD COACH RON HUNTER Ron Hunter restored the Georgia State program to national prominence in just his first year as head coach of the Panthers during the season. Georgia State won 22 games, the second most in school history, advancing to the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, the Panthers fourthever postseason appearance. Hunter has won 296 games in 18 seasons, but the accomplishments made by the team might be the most special. After being named head coach on March, 21, 2011, he built a squad that finished in the top 20 in the nation in scoring defense, defensive shooting percentage, steals and blocked shots, as six seniors finished their careers triumpently. Following the recordsetting season, Hunter was named Atlanta Tipoff Club Georgia Coach of the Year, while his players earned a recordnumber of conference and national awards. National notoriety is nothing new for Hunter. While at IUPUI, he was lauded for his humanitarian efforts, partnering with Samaritan s Feet, an organization that collects shoes for underprivileged children around the world. He continued that work in Atlanta, coaching the Panthers while barefoot to victory over UNCW in front of the largest crowd in the Sports Arena since While leading IUPUI to 25 or more wins in two of his final four seasons, Hunter began to partner with Samaritan s Feet, an organization that collects shoes for underprivileged children around the world. On Jan. 24, 2008, he coached IUPUI against Oakland in his bare feet to help raise awareness for the cause. By tipoff, Hunter s efforts had raised more than 100,000 pairs of shoes, and to date, that number has climbed well above 250,000. During his first season at Georgia State, Hunter led the Panthers to the second round of the CollegeInsider.com Postseason Tournament, just the fourth time GSU earned a postseason bid. The Panthers opened the tournament at home, another first, hosting a postseason contest and earning an impressive 7443 victory against Tennessee Tech. Earlier in the year, Hunter s squad won 11 straight games, a schoolrecord, earning impressive victories over CAA preseason favorite Drexel and at VCU. The streak included wins of 32, 32 and 31 points. The Panthers winning ways continued in the CAA Tournament with a recordsetting 35point victory against Hofstra in the first round, the largest margin of victory in CAA Championship history. Hunter s resume includes numerous national honors including an NABC Guardians of the Game Pillar Award for Service, the 2009 Giant Steps Award from the National Consortium for Academics and Sport (NCAS), and a Minority Achievement Award from the Center for Leadership Development (CLD). He was one of seven head coaches who served on the Division I Basketball Academic Enhancement Group, as appointed by late NCAA President Myles Brand, and he is a member of the National Basketball Coaches Association (NABC) Board of Directors. Hunter, 48, earned his bachelor s degree in education at Miami in 1986 and added a master s in He was a standout player on strong Miami teams of the mid1980s, along with high school and college teammate Ron Harper, who went on to a long NBA career. The Redhawks were 8130 during Hunter s fouryear career and earned three consecutive NCAA Tournament berths while winning two MAC championships.
